hello and thanks forjoining us. there's only one place to start and that's at wimbledon where a rain affected day nevertheless saw plenty of action on centre court and court 1. the defending women's singles champion elena rybakina has begun the defence of her title. the kazakh has booked her place in round 2 at the expense of american shelby rogers, but had to do it the hard way after dropping the first set. she re—grouped to come through in 3. 4—6, 6—1, 6—2 the final score. just the atmosphere and the

tension on the centre court is different than the last year because last year i started on a smaller current, and with every match i was playing better and better, feeling better, but here is different, straight they go to this big court mandating for me now it's a new chapter, and this is something to get used to and try to maintain my level and just to get used to all of these things. it was a much easier time for the top seed in the men's draw, world number one carlos alcaraz breezing through to the second round. the spaniard needed less than two hours to beat retiring frenchman jeremy chardy in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2, 7-5. the us open champion is aiming to become the third youngest player to win the men's singles title, but alcaraz*s thoughts were only focused on the special guest of the day on centre court, eight—time champion roger federer. after the match, i was on the phone, you know, taking

everything, you know, i have done, you know, you know, all... i saw the post commander so that roger federer was here, and i was a little bitjealous, you know? honestly, i want rogerfederate you know? honestly, i want roger federate to watch one of my matches. and i wish he would talk a little bit within. for me, it would be amazing, and i hope to, you know, to see him around more than once. andy murray maintained his record of never losing in the wimbledon first round with an encouraging victory over fellow briton ryan peniston. murray is ranked 40th in the world and the two time champion started slowly against his wildcard compatriot on centre court. but eventually showed his greater class to fight off early break points and moving up a gear to win 6—3 6—0 6—1. so a hectic day three in store at wimbledon on wednesday

with most of those rain—delayed first round matches scheduled for play, along with the start of the second round. with a look ahead, here's chetan pathak. the rain has poured for most of these first two days at wimbledon. the forecast is looking betterfor wimbledon. the forecast is looking better for wednesday. on centre court, we will see round two matches get under way, that includes the world number one trying to win her first wimbledon title. she faces up against sarah sarid as, talking about how comfortable she is now appearing on the grass, but still, and her words, has a lot to learn. she is a three—time french open champion in the current us open champion. she's desperate to get her hands on the venus rose water dish here. novak djokovic will also take to centre court on wednesday. he hasn't been beaten on that court for over a decade. he is trying to win a roger federick equalling eighth wimbledon singles title in which will be

a 24th grand slam frame. he set “p a 24th grand slam frame. he set up against the australian jordan thompson and we are also going to see daniel get his wimbledon under way on wednesday. he wasn't here last year, the russian, because of the ban on from russia and belarus. he is going to be taking on a home favourite, a british wild card making his wimbledon debut, the former us open champion says he hasn't always enjoyed playing on grass. will be —— will this be the time he can finally break through? as we still recover from what was a a chaotic second test at lord's we prepare to move on to headingley, host of so many famous ashes moments and a venue that is sure to give the australian team a hostile welcome on thursday. at lord's we had everything, a barrage of bouncers, a controversial dimissal and a true captain's innings from england's ben stokes. for the aussies, a draw at headingley would not only erase some of the painful losses the team have experienced at that particular ground, but also more importantly see them retain the ashes.

adding a layer of intrigue, both squads have injuries to contend with as well — on the england side its been confirmed that ollie pope has been ruled out of the rest of the series. it will be a big mess for us, obviously. he is a hell of a player. and he is a great man to have in the group as well. gains a huge amount of having him as vice captain, as do a number of the guys around, so of course it would be a big loss. he's been an integral part of this team and will continue to be for many years to come. so as we mentioned key injuries are affecting both sides, ollie pope for england, however just as significant is that off—spinner nathan lyon will also miss the rest of the ashes series. his likely replacement for the third test — todd murphy —is well aware of lyon's impact on the tourists. obviously devastating for him, he has been so durable for so long in place a massive

role in the australian cricket team, so, yeah, to see them go down was disappointing. it hurts going forward for everyone, but hopefully i can step in at some stage if i get the opportunity and play a role. england's women cricketers face an uphill battle in their ashes series. the slimmest of hopes remain for the hosts after australia won the first t20 by four wickets and took a 6—nil points lead in the multi—format series. england need nine points to regain the ashes with things moving on to the oval on wednesday and our reporter jo currie was there for us. so so england's ashes hopes are currently hanging by a thread. if they are to win the series, something they haven't done since 2014, they need to win all five remaining white ball games, and starting here at the oval with a t 20 tomorrow knight. mission possible placement perhaps. must win? definitely. now, a short time ago, we got the thoughts of the both england and australia came. i both england and australia came. ~' * , , both england and australia came. ~ * , , ., both england and australia came. ~ 2 , ., ., came. i think it's been a lot of close _ came. i think it's been a lot of close games. _ came. i think it's been a lot of close games. t20 - came. i think it's been a lot of close games. t20 with l came. i think it's been a lot i of close games. t20 with the last over. _

to take charge of the academy in which time she also initiated the club's girls academy which launched in 2021. from me and the rest of the team at the bbc sport centre, goodbye. hello there. conditions improve for much of the country for wednesday. we're in between weather systems. so again, it's going to be one of sunshine and showers, but nowhere near as wet as what we had across the south of the country on tuesday. now, that's tuesday's area of low pressure clearing off into the near continent. this area of low pressure will enhance showers across scotland, northern ireland. but we're generally in between weather systems with lighter winds as well. now, it could still start wet and windy across the far east
12:56 am
of east anglia first thing, but then that'll clear away. then it's a day of sunshine and showers. you could catch a shower pretty much anywhere, but i think the majority of them will be across scotland and northern ireland because the winds will be lighter. we should see more sunshine around, particularly across the south. we could be up to 20 or 21 celsius, otherwise it's the mid to high teens again in the north. so there is a threat of a passing shower or two for wimbledon. but wednesday's weather looks a lot better. we should get to see some play in the outside courts. so as we move through wednesday nights, most of those showers fade away and then it's drier and clearer for many of us. but breeze and clouds starts to pick up out west ahead of this area of low pressure temperature wise, ranging from 7 to 12 celsius. this is the pressure chart for thursday. we've got high pressure building over the near continent will keep things fine and settled for england and wales. this area of low pressure will park itselfjust to the west of ireland. that's going to bring cloud strong winds and outbreaks of some heavy rain across northern ireland pushing up in towards western scotland.
12:57 am
but the rest of the country should stay largely dry and good spells of sunshine start to pick up a southerly breeze. so temperatures will be picking up — 22 or 23 celsius. on friday, we have low pressure to the north and the west of the country, higher pressure to the south and the east. and we're drawing up some warm and humid air at this point from the south. so much of england and wales will have a dry, sunny and a very warm day. chances of showers or thunderstorms, particularly for western scotland and northern ireland, where it will also be windier. so it could be the mid to high 20s for england and wales on friday. noticeably warmer with increased humidity. but for the weekend low pressure sits out to the west of the uk and influences the weather pretty much across the whole country. so although it'll stay quite warm across the south on saturday as an increasing threat of showers and thunderstorms as we move through the weekend, temperatures dropping a little bit again on sunday.
