in terms of the tennis itself, it was business as normal for novak djokovic. no stopping him at the moment, through to the third round as the favourite for roger federer—equalling eight wimbledon singles titles. jordan thompson, the australian, causing him some trouble at times, but nothing to worry him too much. also through to the third round is iga swiatek, world number one and top seed, hoping to win her first wimbledon title, beating sara sorribes tormo in straight sets. court two saw stefanos tsitsipas ultimately beat dominic thiem in a final set tie—break. andy murray awaits seven tsitsipas in the second round on thursday. wins for medvedev, fritz, tiafoe, shelton — a couple of surprises, with pliskova going out.

cricket and the english women have kept their ashes hopes alive with a thrilling three—run victory over australia in the must—win second t20. england still trail 6—2 in the multiformat series that inflicted a first t20 defeat for the world champions since march 2021. jo curry was at the oval for us. this is a momentous win for england. notjust to keep the ashes alive but for some much—needed confidence. victories against the world champions, well, they don't come along very often. england opened the batting with vigor. danni wyatt shone with an unbeaten 76. but that was followed by a middle order collapse. however, the tail—end managed to steer england to an impressive 186, their highest ever t20 total against australia, to give themselves a real chance. now, in front of a 20,000—strong crowd,

captain alyssa healy got australia off to a solid start, before they lost her bat. 16 runs, leaving the english fans living. they were choosing 20 runs in the final over, falling three short. they had the home side a fine victory in their first points in the series. a magical night here at the oval. these two teams next play on saturday at lord's. on the men's side, the crucial third ashes test starts at headingly in leeds on thursday, and england, trailing a 2—0, have made a raft of changes. but england have to win. anything less than that will see the australians retain the ashes. the aussies might be expecting a hostile atmosphere after the controversial final day in the second test. our correspondentjoe wilson was at headingly for us with more. in the last few days it seems that anybody intimately or distantly connected to cricket has expressed opinion about thejonny bairstow stumping affair.
2:50 am
all that really matters now in the series as it is about to resume is how do england react? jonny bairstow in particular. and all of that is the responsibility of the captain. i think we have seen in the past withjonny, particularly around any criticism around himself, he has always managed to do something. and whether he uses the incident last week of some kind of inspiration to get the best out of himself this week, who knows? but as i said, to every individual, just do whatever you need to do to get yourself up for this week. so what, right now, is in the mind of australia's captain, looking ahead to this test, looking back to sunday, knowing that so many people in the last few days have raised this issue of the spirit of cricket? people were asking where that was in the long room at lunchtime — i absolutely take that on board. do you think the spirit of cricket is a real thing
2:51 am
or admit that we like to think exists? 100% i think it is a real thing. i think at times there is nuance to it. and everyone might see a little bit differently. which is fine. that's part of it. but no, absolutely, i think that's one of the beauties of our sport. it's a gentleman's sport. you want to maintain respect for the opposition at all times, the umpires, you know, fans, the game — so i think it is one of the strengths of our game. sorry, and you think that was upheld at lord's, because some people might wonder if you had any personal embarrassment about that in the days that have followed? oh, i think our players were outstanding in that regard, yeah. england's team will be different — mark wood bringing pace bowling, chris woakes trying to get some wickets, moeen ali is back, bairstow at number five. above all that, in that will hope for some intangible headingly magic to win the test match. that right now is the theory. cycling, now, and there's

a new leader of the tour de france after a hard day of racing in the pyrenees. australia's jai hindley has taken the yellow jersey from britain's adam yates, who's now in fifth place, having lost a minute and a half on stage five. hindley leads the race by 47 seconds from defending champion jonas vingegaard. adam yates and his team mate tadej pogacar had started the day first and second, but this was their first big test in the high mountains. they had to use all their team's resources to chase down two breakaway groups, and almost made it whenjai hindley, who won the giro d'italia last year, launched an attack. he jumped out of his spacing group, and tadej pogacar was next. jonas vingegaard launched himself up the road afterjai hindley. jonas vingegaard cut the australian lead but couldn't catch him. hindley picked up his first stage when in his first tour de

marc edwards, and the rest of the team at the bbc sport centre, goodbye. hello. our fairly unsettled spell ofjuly weather is set to continue through the remainder of the week, really and we're going to be seeing temperatures gradually on the rise over the next few days. but through thursday, some sunshine in the forecast, particularly so towards the east, but also a bit of rain mainly across the north—west of the uk. down to the fact that we've got this area of low pressure approaching from the atlantic, whereas high pressure across the continent is dominating things further south and east. so for thursday, fairly fresh starts the best of the sunshine will be for eastern scotland, eastern and southern parts of england and into wales, but cumulus cloud builds through the day and that will just bring the odd shower mainly in the north and the west of the british isles. more persistent rain arrives across northern ireland
2:57 am
during the afternoon. it'll be windy here with gusts about a0 miles an hour and temperatures 15 to 22 degrees. don't think we'll see any interruptions at wimbledon today due to the weather, but just a very small chance of a shower in the afternoon as that cloud builds. next few days at wimbledon, hot and humid on friday, thunderstorms and showers possible for saturday and for sunday. now back to thursday in the afternoon. in the evening, that area of rain drifts out of northern ireland across parts of scotland, becoming fairly light and patchy overnight, but across england and wales, quite a warm, humid night. temperatures certainly remaining in double figures overnight. they're not quite as fresh compared to wednesday night. but what we're going to see on friday as this area of low pressure, this frontal system drifts its way northwards, it'll open the doors for this warm and moist flow coming in from the south. so a hot, humid feeling day for some of us on friday, especially so across england and wales. a bit more cloud and showery rain at times for scotland and northern ireland with a bit of a breeze blowing too, but for the warmest spots we're likely to see 28 or 29 degrees on friday, typically the low 20s further north. now heading on into the weekend, we've got that warm, moist, humid air with us and then low pressure again moving in from the atlantic.
2:58 am
so the combination of those two things means we could see some very lively weather on saturday. some thunderstorms possible almost anywhere where you see these heavy showers and that hot, humid air, fresh airjust returning from the west later in the day. a bit of uncertainty about the timing, location of some of those showers still quite warm ahead of them with temperatures again in the mid 20s. so a brief spell of heat to think friday into saturday, but some thunderstorms through the weekend and they're going to continue the unsettled trend into next week. bye— bye.
