crashes into a primary school building in south london. yevgeny prigozhin, the founder of the wagner mercenary group, has left belarus and is back in russia, according to the belarusian president. four people are killed in a russian rocket attack on an apartment building in ukraine. the un human rights chief has warned that myanmar is in a deadly freefall into even greater violence more than two years after the military coup that tore the country apart. we'll be speaking live to a former political prisoner. and meta, the company behind instagram, launches threads as a rival to twitter. we'll be speaking to one of ghana's biggest influencers about why they've joined the app. hello, i'm samantha simmonds.
3:01 pm
welcome to verified live, three hours of breaking stories, and checking out the truth behind them. we'll turn to the war in ukraine in a moment, but first an update on the primary school car crash in south—west london. a girl has died after a land rover crashed into the study primary school in wimbledon on thursday morning. the metropolitan police also said a woman in her 40s had been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. we're expecting a police press conference in the next few minutes — we will keep an on that and keep it on screen so that we can take it as soon as it starts. but first. . .. let's turn to the news that the wagner group leader, yevgeny prigozhin, has left belarus
3:02 pm
and may be in the russian city of st petersburg. that's according to the belarusian leader, alexander lukashenko. mr prigozhin led wagner's short—lived mutiny in russia last month. mr lukashenko said he had — in his words — offered to let mr prigozhin "bed down" in belarus. onjune 27th, he confirmed the mercenary group leader had arrived in the country as part of a deal to end the rebellion, but this is what he said this morning. as for prigozhin, he is in st petersburg. he may have gone to moscow this morning or somewhere else. he is not on the territory of belarus. meanwhile, in ukraine, a russian rocket has hit an apartment building in the western city of lviv hundreds of kilometres from the front lines, killing at least four people. the mayor of lviv says the attack has left more than 30 people injured — one seriously. more than 50 flats have been damaged. these aerial images show the scale of the devastation — the top floors of the apartment building have been destroyed by the force of the explosion.
3:03 pm
the attack is being described as the largest on lviv*s civilian infrastructure since the start of the full—scale invasion. we can hear now from one of the survivors. translation: if it wasn't i for the rescuers, we wouldn't have left the apartment. the rescuers broke down the door and led us out. i am left without an apartment, without anything. i heard screams from the neighbours. i think they were being pulled out of the rubble. opposite me, there were terrifying screams. in south london that press conference is expected to take place shortly after police confirmed that one child had died in the accident and eight people have been injured when a car hit a primary school in south london in wimbledon, so we will keep an eye on the scene there.
3:04 pm
live now to our correspondent sarah rainsford — she's in the town of bialystok on poland—belarus border — and also vitaliy shevchenko, russia editor at bbc monitoring, joins us. i want to talk about the situation in lviv, what more do we know about the attack overnight? the in lviv, what more do we know about the attack overnight?— the attack overnight? the security services are _ the attack overnight? the security services are sifting _ the attack overnight? the security services are sifting through - the attack overnight? the security services are sifting through the i services are sifting through the rubble. we have had an update from the police who are saying that the number of people who were injured in the attack last night rose to 40, the attack last night rose to 40, the number of fatalities still stands at four. the mayor, the way he described the attack, is one of the worst of the western ukrainian city since the full—scale war began. images circulating on social media show the whole neighbourhood damaged by the missiles with those blown

out, roofs blown off the tops of buildings. it's not clear what russia could have been targeting in that particular area, which is very close to central lviv, and it's a pattern we have seen before, a russian missile attack that takes place at night, and the russians are saying that they target military installations, but what we hear coming from ukraine are reports of civilians killed or injured, asleep in their beds, but this attack happened in western ukraine, which is unusual. normally, it is cities in eastern or south—eastern ukraine that get targeted, now it is lviv. and it does show the russians are

still determined to penetrate deep within the heart of ukraine. and what does it say about the capabilities of ukraine's air defences?— capabilities of ukraine's air defences? . ., . ., , defences? the attacks on the better rotected defences? the attacks on the better protected cities _ defences? the attacks on the better protected cities in _ defences? the attacks on the better protected cities in ukraine _ defences? the attacks on the better protected cities in ukraine such - defences? the attacks on the better protected cities in ukraine such as l protected cities in ukraine such as the capital kyiv, russian attacks have become less damaging, as far as we can tell, based on reporting from ukraine. kyiv is obviously protected by sophisticated western supply air defences. we don't know the details. but ukrainian authorities say after these attacks... we but ukrainian authorities say after these attacks. . ._ but ukrainian authorities say after these attacks... we can go live now to south london _ these attacks... we can go live now to south london where _ these attacks... we can go live now to south london where we - these attacks. .. we can go live now to south london where we will- these attacks... we can go live now to south london where we willjustl to south london where we willjust hear from the authorities now come alive in south london, with an update after that crash earlier today where one child was killed.

3:14 pm
suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, the london ambulance service confirming that ten patients were also taken to hospital, clearly very difficult and emotional press conference there for the police, the detective chief superintendent breaking with emotion at time as she had to deliver this difficult news, we did not hear from the representatives of the school there, the chair of governors, who said they would talk directly to the school community, but they did not want to speculate on their priority was to work with those within the school community, police said their priority was to identify witnesses and they appealed for anyone with any information to come forward, and they also said they had to interview they also said they had to interview the suspect, the woman in her 40s, who they said is in police custody at the moment, they said they have spoken to some witnesses, they have viewed cctv as well. this is a wider shot as you can see of the scene

there, this car in situ still, a huge police presence there. these pictures taken earlier today, but you get the sense, the location, the geography of this quiet road we were hearing about from our correspondence, and questions asked about how this possibly could have happened on such a quiet road, but police reiterating that they are not treating this as a terrorist incident, but an extremely difficult time for all of those involved. the school community and the families of all of those impacted by this dreadful incident earlier on today, they said they were called just before 10am to the scene. the chief superintendent called it a tragic incident and all other representatives there, the police, the ambulance service, the fire brigade reiterating their

sympathies, their thoughts are with all of the families of those impacted. let's talk to our correspondent who was at that press conference as well. not an awful lot more detail there, but certainly a sense of the shock in this community on all those who were called to the scene, what they are feeling today. striking, the level of emotion that we could see in those statements. as you mentioned, the metropolitan police, the detective superintendent, saying an eight—year—old girl died in this incident this morning, a woman in her 40s was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remains in police custody, we got more information from the london ambulance service in terms of numbers and the number of people who were taken to hospital. he said there were 16 patients treated at there were 16 patients treated at the scene, ten were taken to

hospital, and as we just talked about, that eight—year—old little girl having lost her life. the paramedics also said they initially declared a major incident at the scene and they also set up a major incident centre here, they dispatched 15 ambulances in the air ambulance as well. it was interesting as well, perhaps not surprising, that the school obviously very moved by what has been happening at this stage, do not want to give too much information, we heard from the chair of governors there who said the school is profoundly affected and will be for some time to come. just before that press conference happened, there was a clinical psychologist who had been dispatched from a local hospital who said she was here to support the staff that were on site, and we have seen a number of staff coming and going to the school throughout the afternoon, looking visibly distressed, and this is a small

community, geographically, and a lot of the people who have been moving around here say they know of people that are at that school, so that resonates when the school says this will be really affect them profoundly, but as you say, the police would not be drawn any further on what actually happened and what happened to the driver behind the wheel, we don't yet know the condition of the other people still being treated in hospital, all we know is that they remain in hospital, and we hope that the police will give us some sort of update later but clearly they are saying this is in the early stages of what they say is a complex investigation and one that is still moving. brute investigation and one that is still movinr. ~ ., investigation and one that is still movinr. . . , investigation and one that is still movin. _ . ., , ., ., “ investigation and one that is still movin. _ . ., , ., ., ~' ., investigation and one that is still movinr. . . , ., moving. we are 'ust looking at some aerial shots — moving. we are just looking at some aerial shots from _ moving. we are just looking at some aerial shots from a _ moving. we are just looking at some aerial shots from a bit _ moving. we are just looking at some aerial shots from a bit earlier- moving. we are just looking at some aerial shots from a bit earlier that i aerial shots from a bit earlier that give us the exact scene as it happened, where the car ended up, almost in the side of a window of the school, butjust explain the geography and the size of the

and that allows southerly winds to drag up some much hotter airfrom france. and so temperatures in the hottest areas by tomorrow will surge upwards, reaching highs of 29 degrees in the hottest parts. now, this afternoon, it's fairly quiet weather—wise. temperatures near average, some sunny spells for most of england, wales, eastern scotland, showers few and far between. but we've got heavier rain in northern ireland and for western counties of northern ireland. could see some localised surface water flooding building in with some heavier bursts here and that heavier rain will edge into western scotland late afternoon or early evening time. now, that heavy burst of rain will then push its way northwards across scotland. the rain then becomes a little bit lighter and patchier for scotland and northern ireland later in the night. maybe with some mist patches developing around coast and hills, should be dry for most of england and wales. for tomorrow, well, we start off with that chance of rain for northern ireland and scotland, although probably turning drier and brighter as the day goes by. it's across england and wales that we'll have the best of the day's sunshine and these southerly winds

will be dragging in some much hotter air. temperatures could hit 29 degrees celsius. so getting into the mid 80s in fahrenheit towards south—east england, probably about 26 for eastern wales and into the low 20s for the central belt of scotland. for saturday, it stays on the warm side, but this area of low pressure will bring the threat of showers and thunderstorms. initially, we'll see a band of rain working into the west, but then a plume of moisture gets pulled in from europe, and that will probably take over as been the driving force of seeing heavy thundery showers. the showers are always going to be a bit hit and miss in nature, but some of them could be quite torrential. we're looking at highs into the upper 20s, the hottest weather across eastern areas. now, for sunday, it's still quite warm, but it's another day of sunny spells and heavy showers. potentially some of those showers could merge together to give some really long spells of rain. could be really torrential as well. but there's some uncertainty about exactly where those heavier downpours are likely to be on sunday. bye for now.
