he master—minded a rebellion, then disappeared from sight. now, new details emerge on the whereabouts of wagner boss welcome to world news america. it was the uprising that captured the world's attention —— and left more questions than answers, when it comes to russia's war in ukraine. the latest twist has involved the whereabouts of yev—geny prigozhin, the head of the wagner group of yevgeny prigozhin, the head of the wagner group who led the rebellion. today the leader of belarus said he's in russia, and not in belarus as many had understood. alexander lukashenko made that comment to a very small gathering ofjournalists. one of them was our own steve rosenberg, and he has this report. was supposed to move here to belarus with some of his fighters but no sign brokered the agreement that ended the mutiny, so we are told. sign under a deal with the kremlin, wagner mercenary yevgeny prigozhin was supposed to move here to belarus with some of his fighters. but no sign yet. translation: as of this morning, the wagner fighters, _
10:02 pm
and very serious ones, are still in the camps they have withdrawn to afterfighting in bakhmut. as for yevgeny prigozhin, he is in st petersburg, or maybe he flew to moscow this morning, or somewhere else, but he is not in belarus. yevgeny prigozhin hasn't been seen in public for days, although we have seen inside what is purported to be his st petersburg mansion, these images leaked online, reportedly taken during a raid by russian security services. they show weapons, gold bars and lots of wigs. i asked mr lukashenko if the wagner leader and his group move here would he let them use belarusian territory to attack ukraine and destabilise other countries in the region? translation: steve, we have never attacked anyone and we are not - intending to and no—one will use our territory translation: steve, we have never attacked anyone and we are not - intending to and no—one will use our territory to attack anyone. but if there is an act of aggression against us we will respond and if wagner are here, then they, just like the belarusian army, will defend our interests.
10:03 pm
ever since the wagner mutiny the main question we have been asking is what on earth is going on? and nearly two weeks on we still don't know. the deal that had been announced was pretty clear. yevgeny prigozhin goes to belarus and the wagner fighters who want to join him also go to belarus. but we see no sign of that. from mutiny to missiles and the russian nuclear warheads the kremlin says it is moving to belarus. would mr lukashenko have a say in whether to launch them? i remind him, recently you said god forbid i should have to take the decision to use nuclear weapons. translation i remind him he said god for bid i have to take a decision to use nuclear weapons. translation: joe biden could say . the same and prime minister sue nat. translation: joe biden could say i the same and prime minister sunak. but these are not your weapons,
10:04 pm
they are russian ones, it is not your decision to take. translation: in ukraine a whole army is fighting l with foreign weapons, with nato weapons, because they have run out of their own, so why can't i fight with someone else's? but these are nuclear, we are not talking pistols. translation: yes, nuclear, they are weapons too, - and make sure you mention we are talking about tactical nuclear weapons here. the logic of a leader who, with an iron fist and the kremlin*s backing, has held power for nearly 30 years. steve rosenberg, bbc news, minsk. the social media platform twitter has a new rival. and this is it. it's called threads, and when you open the app, it doesn't look much different. it was launched overnight by meta, which owns facebook and instagram. twitter has been having its fair share of problems since it was bought by elon musk, so how worried should he be? our technology correspondent
10:05 pm
marc cieslak has been finding out. meta's twitter style app that lets users share text, photos and videos arrived in app stores several hours earlier than expected at midnight last night. in that time, it has racked up a significant number of users, 10 million injust seven hours. we have had a chance to get to grips with it, and so far it feels quite a bit like twitter. but there are some differences. threads allows posts of up to 500 characters compared to twitter*s 280. threads will also allow five minutes of video uploads compared to two minutes and 20 seconds for twitter. threads is part of instagram which means it could potentially connect to instagram's hundreds of millions of existing accounts and their data. this is causing concern around meta harvesting users' information. this big network and you have lots of friends, influences and celebrities
10:06 pm
as well as regular people. the data is being intermingled and whilst that is ok in the uk and the us, the data protection commission in europe is more strict about this mingling of data. as yet, this app is not allowed to work in the eu and threads will have to work hard to make the data are compatible with markets around the world. a challenger to elon musk*s twitter. the launch of threads look set to capitalise on rivals' problems including job cuts and issues with advertisers, but could ditching twitter for threads be exchanging one tech billionaire, elon musk, for another in the shape of mark zuckerberg? for more i'm joined by ryan heath, global tech correspondent at axios. threads is very similar to twitter, but as we heard in the piece, there are some key differences.
10:07 pm
twitter is threatening to sue meta— hiring former employees to copy the 3pp hiring former employees to copy the app what you make of these threats that could end up in court at some pointi that could end up in court at some hoin ., ., ., that could end up in court at some --oin ., ., ., ., , , that could end up in court at some hoin ., ., ., ., , , ., ., point i am not a lawyer but i do not take them very _ point i am not a lawyer but i do not take them very seriously. - point i am not a lawyer but i do not take them very seriously. meta - point i am not a lawyer but i do not l take them very seriously. meta came out with a clear response that they do not hire and have not hired former twitter engineers and i don't think that there is that much secret about how twitter operates will stop its branding literally as the global townsquare of the world. there have been plenty of elements others have copied before and there has been a lot of back and forth between different platforms of this is not to say that it might not end up before a judge orjury, but i think at this point it is pretty fruitless exercise from twitter. figs at this point it is pretty fruitless exercise from twitter.— at this point it is pretty fruitless exercise from twitter. as we heard in the peace _ exercise from twitter. as we heard in the peace and _ exercise from twitter. as we heard in the peace and clearly _ exercise from twitter. as we heard in the peace and clearly as - exercise from twitter. as we heard in the peace and clearly as elon . in the peace and clearly as elon musk himself thinks these two apps
10:08 pm
are very similar there are some key differences, we can break it down here. recalling at the tail of the tape. a few of them listed here — longer posts and videos, verification will be done via instagram, no hashtags, which is the copyright i guess of twitter which is what they are known for. i want to ask you about another key difference. you can't delete your account once you sign up! yes if you are creating this threads account with her because you download it directly or you were joining from instagram, if you create this link with instagram, they are bound together. so it is a poison pill. if you want to get rid of one you need to get rid of both. the message there really is that any user looking to sign up look needs to be aware of the bargain that they are going into need to look at some of the fine print. that is if you are not paying for a service, what you end up doing is paying with your data. that is how meta the owner of
10:09 pm
threads and instagram makes money. it follows you around, it shares that information with advertisers is an trust to make money from the advertisers. so you need to be aware of that and that you might be signing up for more complications than did you at first expected when you heard about the site. {guild than did you at first expected when you heard about the site. could then be concerns — you heard about the site. could then be concerns about data _ you heard about the site. could then be concerns about data protection i be concerns about data protection when it comes to this new app? figs he when it comes to this new app? as he alluded to in — when it comes to this new app? as he alluded to in the _ when it comes to this new app? as he alluded to in the interim _ when it comes to this new app? sis ie: alluded to in the interim report that is the reason why threads is not operating in europe right now. so in the us there is no federal privacy laws are people who are using services online here in the us, do not have the same protections that are available to some users in europe. at the same time, because the owner of threads, meta— and really rapped on the knuckles may times in europe over its data protection policies than for the proceeding more cautiously before they enter into that eu market. but
10:10 pm
thatis they enter into that eu market. but that is another message that needs to be taken on board. getting up to 30 million euros is in the first 2a hours, meta was able to do that without having anyone in the you on board. so there is clearly a lot of potential and a big runway for more and more users to sign up. it may never get to the scale of twitter, it may not preach instagram and facebook levels of billions of users, but there is clearly a lot of interest in the service. i users, but there is clearly a lot of interest in the service.— interest in the service. i would ask ou about interest in the service. i would ask you about that _ interest in the service. i would ask you about that number. _ interest in the service. i would ask you about that number. 30 - interest in the service. i would ask you about that number. 30 million users is just a you about that number. 30 million users isjust a day. clearly you about that number. 30 million users is just a day. clearly a lot coming overfrom instagram. macedon has tried to take some users from twitter, there is an app called blue sky, what are the chances that threads could be what people are calling the twitter killer. significant chances. even if it is not a twitter killer, the truck record of meta is being able to run very profitable businesses in the space. so i think they will succeed
10:11 pm
at a business level and they have huge advantages by having that scale and having that experience in running businesses globally. that is not true of these rival startups. so they start with an advantage and they start with an advantage and they have relationships with very deep—pocketed advertisers that would help to continue this ball rolling. so meta starts with a lot of advantages in this situation for something you may not be the coolest, may never get back to the sense that twitter was able to create a ticket to go, being the place we had to be if you were interested in news and pics but they look like they are on their way to success. ., ~' look like they are on their way to success. ., ~ , ., ., ., ~ success. thank you for taking the time to speak _ success. thank you for taking the time to speak with _ success. thank you for taking the time to speak with us. _ us treasury secretary janet yellen is in china, to try to rebuild ties,

it's hard to find a job. all my classmates feel the same pressure. those who have jobs can be reluctant to spend big because they are nervous about their financial security. you can see why if you travel just a bit further east, to the outskirts of a much larger city, where a property explosion hasn't matched real demand from buyers or renters. this woman bought a flat here a couple of years ago, but her estate remains largely empty and its value has collapsed. translation: of course i'm worried but what can i do? . everywhere there are shells of tower blocks which appear abandoned. this problem with the real estate supply and demand isn't limited to this area. it isn't even limited to this city. you can drive out of here for hours and you will find clusters of towers with unoccupied or unfinished apartments, many of their workers have stopped altogether and consider that the same thing is happening

india's top court is set to deliver its verdict on whether same sex marriage can be allowed. it s a proposal that has sharply divided opinion in the country. while the government and religious groups have opposed the idea, the lgbtq+ community is hopeful that the court will once again show the way, 5 years after it decriminalised homosexuality. arunoday mukharji reports. i'm just saying we want to get married. you are not a normal human being. how are their lives getting i affected by people like us? the fight for rights is louder than ever. forging ahead. demanding change. excited and hopeful that the supreme court will now recognise same sex marriage. it's what these men have been

i mean, anyway, i'm not going to have a personal future, but this would end my social life and this would end my professional life. marriage is not only. a question of dignity, as if that were not enough. it is also a bouquet of rights that lgbtq people are being denied. | india's constitution is key to this issue. it promises equality to all. opposing sides have fought it out in the country's highest court. right to get a particular social relationship recognised as a marriage is not a fundamental right. a formerjudge of the delhi high court agrees. thisjustice claims its against india's culture. he and 20 other formerjudges wrote to the supreme court against the proposal. translation: what is same sex marriage? i it's an abnormality. a marriage should be between a man and a woman. how can same sex

couples adopt society? but why should society interfere? are they not part of the same society? so if they are part of the same society, then shouldn't they have the same rights? but that's only if they comply by the existing societal norms. it took 70 years for the supreme court to legalise gay sex in 2018. the verdict triggered hope that the right to marry might not be far behind. it's rare to see members of the lgbtq+ community claim public spaces like these in a country like india, where social stigma and taboo are still very much associated with sexual identity. people over here say that gatherings like these are a show of strength. global estimates say the community is now 10% of india's population. this decision is notjust about same sex marriage, but also about the path the country takes for equal rights. arunoday mukharji, bbc news, delhi.

this is bass rock, off the east coast of scotland, home to the world's largest colony of northern gannets. when avian flu struck last year, thousands of birds died. a year on, though, there is hope. the gannet population is showing signs of recovery, as our climate editor justin rowlatt reports. david attenborough: bass rock in scotland's firth of forth - is the largest gannet colony in the world. david attenborough's team visited bass rock three years ago. at the height of summer, the whole of bass rock is jam—packed. but this time last year, right in the middle of the breeding season, bird flu struck. gannets, including chicks, died in their thousands. this was the population in 2020, an estimated 150,000 birds. this is 2022.

a year on, and we are headed back to bass rock with a team of scientists from edinburgh university who are doing the first population survey of the gannets this year. there have been huge changes. this area was completely covered with birds. gannets everywhere. not breeding, but it was just full with life. maggie sheddan has been coming here virtually every week for more than 20 years. slowly, in the space of three weeks, i've seen this colonyjust empty. it was heartbreaking to watch that, this magnificent bird that's so strong, just have no power at all. so it's going to start from the far corner. | the scientists send up a drone to take pictures.

they'll use artificial intelligence to count the birds. because obviously humans are far more prone to error, so you can get tired, you can just get bored of counting the birds, which means you get less accurate as time goes on. a computer doesn't get bored, it doesn't get hired. but even without ai, you can see a lot of birds have come back. some have survived the flu. just look how it can change their eyes. and there are chicks, lots of them. maggie is delighted. this is magnificent, what we're seeing here. what we are seeing now, there's established breeders that have survived. there's a lot more than i think we hoped for. but lots of the birds haven't built nests. gannets pairfor life. these birds are waiting for their partners to come back. but it's late in the season. maggie fears most are probably dead. it'll be a couple of months before the scientists publish theirfindings. the colony has taken a big hit, but the good news is the gannets
