much worse than now. in the corridors of power here, there's been lots of debate about why now isn't the time to make ukraine a full nato member. but... the big picture here is that ukraine and its defence against russia's aggression is the focus of all the leaders at the summit. they are pledging long term humanitarian and military aid and this despite all of those countries facing a cost of living crisis at home. it is a big deal. such a big deal, the british defence secretary remarked today off camera he had advised kyiv not to treat allies like an amazon for weapon supplies. the prime minister said he was confident ukraine's president understood. i confident ukraine's president understood.— confident ukraine's president understood. ,, ., ., , , understood. i know he and his people are incredibly — understood. i know he and his people are incredibly grateful _ understood. i know he and his people are incredibly grateful for _ understood. i know he and his people are incredibly grateful for the - are incredibly grateful for the support the uk has shown, the welcome we have shown to many ukrainian families and the leadership we have shown throughout this conflict. aha,

6:11 pm
this is there is tension between the realities of war decimating ukraine, upending the security situation across all of europe and the one hand but on the other hand a domestic political pressures on the shoulders of all these leaders. if you think of volodymyr zelensky, his suffering people expect him to be able to come here to nate allen data leaders, i want more weapons, expensive sophisticated ones and i want to become a member of nato as soon as possible. they think that could and should happen. then look atjoe biden, he is facing an election in the us next year. there is a lot of pressure on him, he's taken a leading role over ukraine. in europe he has pledged so much money on military aid. the uk, rishi sunak, emmanuel macron of france, those countries are suffering a cost of living crisis. people there will not be happy perhaps for a blank check for ukraine for the long, long term. 50 check for ukraine for the long, long term. , check for ukraine for the long, long term, , . check for ukraine for the long, long term, , * check for ukraine for the long, long term. , ~ ,, term. so it is tricky. and steve rosenberg _ term. so it is tricky. and steve rosenberg in _ term. so it is tricky. and steve rosenberg in moscow, - term. so it is tricky. and steve rosenberg in moscow, how - term. so it is tricky. and steve - rosenberg in moscow, how closely has the kremlin been watching all of

calculated who and by how much the mortgage shock will hit, as households roll off low fixed mortgage rates and face the reality of the rapid recent rate rise. 0verall, by the end of the year, over three million mortgage holders face higher payments, two million up to £200 per month, one million between £200 and £500 per month. but stretch that out to the end of 2026 and you see there, two million households in that middle bracket, payments up between £200 and £500 a month and a million households seeing a £500 per month increase — that's £6,000 per year. now, this doesn'tjust affect homeowners but renters too. the bank says that landlords on buy to let mortgages, often interest only, will see an increase by the end of 2025 of £275 per month. and two in five mortgaged landlords would see their rent fail to cover i25% of their mortgages — an important financial threshold.
6:15 pm
given all that, it is perhaps surprising that across the economy the bank thinks that the financial system is safe and sound and has enough spare funds and also overall stress from high debt burdens. yes, it's rising — but it wont get to levels seen at the time of the financial crisis in 2007 or it will only if interest rates go much higher to 8%. so for now, don't expect a return to then or the spectre of mass repossessions, says governor andrew bailey. i don't think any of us want to go back to a world where the rate you back to a world where the rate are lie with bbc ne\ breaking you are lie with bbc news. the breaking news develop as we have just heard. any past few minutes from the wife of newsreader huw edwards, who has named him as the bbc present or who is facing allegations over payments for sexually explicit images. here is

so many colleagues have been impacted by the recent media speculation, and we hope this statement will bring that to and and, so that is the full statement from vicky flind, the wife of huw edwards, after she named him as the presenter at the heart of the allegations made over the past few days. also another line of breaking news to bring you is that sources have made clear to the pa news agency that huw edwards has not resigned from the bbc, so we have that statement from his wife on his behalf, saying that he is receiving inpatient hospital care and is suffering from some mental health difficulties, and his wife has said that he will respond to these allegations as soon as he is able, but we are getting that new there saying that huw edwards has not
6:18 pm
resigned from the bbc. 0f saying that huw edwards has not resigned from the bbc. of course, we have heard from the bbc as well earlier today. a bbc spokesperson said that they have seen the statement from the police, confirming they have completed their assessment and that the police are not taking further action. in the bbc has said that the police had previously asked us to pause our fact—finding investigations, and we will now move forward with that work, ensuring due process any thorough assessment of the facts while continuing to be mindful of our duty of care to all involved. so thatis our duty of care to all involved. so that is what we have heard in the last hour from the bbc, from the police and from the wife of huw edwards, who has named him as the presenter at the heart of allegations that have really taken centre stage in the media over the past five days. with me is our correspondent helen wilkinson —— helen wilkinson. 0ne correspondent helen wilkinson —— helen wilkinson. one of the homes from vicki flind in the statement was making the statement would take away some of the intense speculation

awful and shocking episode, where there was no criminality, but perhaps a complicated, private life. does not feel very private now. i hope that will give some cost to reflect. we really need to. i wish you edwards now. this has been a compensated story for the media, raising issues of privacy, safeguarding —— complicated story. raising issues of public interest. yeah, incredibly complicated, and all of those things in the mix has made it very difficult. clearly for huw edwards as well, the pressure that will have been put onto him, with all of these claims and counterclaims, and it is clear if he is suffering as his wife says, this serious mental episode, then he has not had the ability to be able to respond to any of these allegations, but from the statement from huw edwards's wife, saying that he will
6:23 pm
intend our, respond to the stories that have been published once he is well enough to do so. but it has been incredibly complicated, because it also raises questions about the original story in the sun newspaper. that story, if we go back to saturday, in emerge the allegations, on friday night, that an unnamed bbc presenter had paid a 17—year—old thousands of pounds in exchange for sexually explicit photographs. and, yes, it absolutely raises questions about that story, because what that then lead to was the bbc involving then lead to was the bbc involving the metropolitan police, because of the metropolitan police, because of the age, 17 years old, but we have heard again another huge development in this story in the last 25 minutes or so, that the metropolitan police, who have over the past couple of days, they met with the bbc

place, but again, at the centre of it, deep television present or as we now know tonight has been named by his wife as huw edwards —— the television presenter has now. he is receiving treatment in hospital for the foreseeable future, for a serious mental episode. we don't know how long that will take. we know he has suffered from depression in the past. he has spoken about that very publicly over the past couple of years. the family of huw edwards, was at the centre of this story, as we now know, have asked for privacy and his wife putting out that statement, saying she is doing it primarily out of concern for her husband's mental well—being and to protect their children. and again, if you edwards, he has not been able to respond to these allegations and it is very clear why he has not been able to —— huw edwards. his wife saying in a statement that once he is well
