editorial this kind versus editorial complaints? most of us are quite clear and confident in how editorial complaints are handled but this is somewhat different. we sometimes get to hundreds of thousands of complaints on various scheduling issues and questions of... tennis is the latest in that, we have had more complaints on tennis than any other item in the last few weeks. in terms of scheduling. you have all of that coming through and we can talk about that in more detail but the process, we are well versed in terms of the stages, and we then have complaints of this nature that come in, that might be serious allegations, we have a lot coming into the bbc, because we are a huge organisation and we have different things, some might be malicious, some might be

clear code of conduct, our values, we have done a very big push on our values as an organisation, and we have got a good process and we could do more with it but we have a good process which we have introduced which, if we have a concern at work the normal route is to your line manager, but that is not always where you can go, that might be the problem, so we have another route which is our support of work line which is our support of work line which as you can ring up hr not connected with your line management and critically the thing we have introduced, is working, but we have got more to do, and we have got most people confident in this but there are gaps in this which is normal when you are deploying these things, but we have a whistle—blowing process which is external and confidential. that process i can talk about in more detail at another

2:54 pm
started some work which clare can take it all on the funding question and we are also supportive of the government doing their work on funding and we are encouraging that based on your very wise report which said essentially will need to look at options and it is not easy if you want to protect universality, the licence fee has benefits, but to echo the chair, we want to look at the options. on the funding side we have laid out a few principles which we think from the bbc perspective where it is important and which we may want to get to in a minute. back up may want to get to in a minute. back up to the strategy, if i may, and i apologise for taking a bit of time, we have had a change at the board level and we have also been doing quite a lot of work. we sense the urgency but it is very important for the committee to know that we have an outstanding day—to—day strategy that if you look at the 2022, 23 report, has delivered a strong numbers for the bbc. there are
2:55 pm
challenges on the licence fee, our income is only down 1.6% and competitively the bbc has had a really good year if you look at the annual report. with its drama and events and its news coverage. i don't think there is a burning crisis in terms of the current working strategy but having said that i think what you are going to see in the next few months and i was soaked by you and to make sure i am safe, as we do want to come out with some work and communication about how we see in a world in which there is increased disinformation and 70% of the world does not have a free press, this is a serious global crisis. we have big decisions to make about the role of the bbc. to give you an indication of the kind of things we are going to be talking about, i think there is a real battle now for an organisation which
2:56 pm
has no agenda but to find the truth and to report impartially and i have made that decision, it has not been the easiest but it is the right one, to give the bbc impartial, for all than noise around us. it is so noisy that we have made that decision and i think that will get more valuable and we can use technology to help with that. the second and this is what makes us completely distinctive is around home—grown talent can be notjust is around home—grown talent can be not just trying to is around home—grown talent can be notjust trying to get return on investment on a drama series, we are trying to get the right creative work and contribution and critically if you look at our numbers of across the uk, we are now more spread across postcodes across the uk then we have ever been. most of our successful dramas are anchored in places like happy valley and we are doing great work and we are pushing more and more money outside and i think that is going to be part of our strategy for the future. the
