the whale shark is considered the largest species of fish — making this rescue effort exceptionally difficult. the whale shark is also considered one of the world's most vulnerable species. incredibly, the divers managed to release the whale sharks one by one by cutting through the nets that had imprisoned them and guiding them away to freedom. a happy ending for the whale sharks. time for a look at the weather. here's sarah keith—lucas. it's looking a bit mixed over the next few days. we had a bit of sunshine out there today. we've also had some showers around too. this was the picture earlier in county durham. the theme of sunshine and showers will stick with us at least for the next 2a hours but over the next few days its remaining cool and unsettled and during the weekend will see the arrival of some pretty wet and windy weather for all of us. looking at the expected rainfall

monday as well. thanks, sarah. and that's bbc news at one. you can keep up with all the latest developments on the bbc website. but from the one o'clock team — goodbye. hello and welcome to sportsday. i'm rebecca davis. coming up on the programme: the women's world cup gets underway in auckland, with the co—hosts new zealand securing an extraordinary victory over the former world champions, norway. a wicket with the first ball of the day at old trafford, but it's not gone all england's way on the second morning of the fourth test. and we're live at hoylake, where the local boy gets the 151st open championship underway.
1:35 pm
let's start at the women's world cup which has begun this morning. the first match and opening ceremony were in auckland, where, just hours before kick—off, two people were shot dead by a gunman. six other people, including police officers, were injured. the tournament did get underway as planned but it made for an emotional night, with a minute's silence before kick off. on the pitch, new zealand produced a huge upset to beat norway, with hannah wilkinson scoring the winner in front of a record crowd for a football match in new zealand. that was the only goal of the game, with new zealand missing a penalty in the closing minutes. it's a huge result for the co—hosts, who had failed to win any of their previous 15

world cup games. i think there have been lots of doubters because of the results we had. but we believed in ourselves this entire game, we believed in ourselves from the very beginning and we have shown that, we played with confidence and poise. the defending was incredible and the finish... this is what dreams are made of. this morning, something tragic happened, and we wanted to bring something positive tonight, and we thought of the victims and the first responders and they made us so proud and we wanted to just help bring something amazing today. well, in the second match of the day, the other hosts, australia, were dealt a huge injury blow when their star player, sam kerr, was ruled out of their opening two matches. it didn't trouble them too much though, as the matildas began their campaign with victory over the republic or ireland. dan ogunshakin was watching. from star to spectator —

this is not how it was supposed to be for sam kerr at her home world cup. her injury a bitter blow for australia but a boost for an ireland side, making its bow on the biggest stage. her absence did little to dampen the enthusiasm of the capacity crowd but without their talisman, the matildas struggled for inspiration early on. against a resolute irish defence, set pieces seemed australia's likeliest route to goal first half, as hayley raso headed narrowly wide. but as the half wore on and ireland showed no signs of cracking, the hosts began to resort to more desperate measures. 0—0 at the break. just five minutes after the restart and ireland finally buckled. contact in the area. penalty! penalty, says the referee. in kerr's absence, steph catley took the responsibility for the matildas. she kept a cool head, and she had

to. with the lead finally secured, cool heads would be required for australia as ireland looked to strike back. and vera pauw*s side did create chances but lost their composure when it mattered most. if kerr was feeling nervous on the sidelines as ireland began to threaten, it didn't show. although this megan connolly free kick went closer than australia would have liked. mackenzie arnold was kept increasingly busy in the matildas goal. all of the late pressure, it was australia who began their home tournament with a win. cheers for australia. to cricket, where the fourth ashes test remains delicately poised. at lunch, england are 61—1, in reply to australia's 317 all out. ben stokes* side got off to the best possible start to the morning,

withjimmy anderson taking the wicket of pat cummins with the very first ball of the session. chris woakes wrapped up the innings with his fifth wicket, josh hazelwood caught by ben duckett. he was back in the action almost immediately but he didn't last long — duckett out forjust one. england at that point were 9—1, but they recovered before lunch. moeen ali and zak crawley steadied the ship. so this is where things stand at lunch on the second day. england 61-1, in lunch on the second day. england 61—1, in reply to australia's 317 all out. they will resume in the next few minutes at old trafford. as well as the world cup and the ashes, today is also the first day of the open at hoylake. australian cam smith looking to defend his title from last year. let's go live to our reporter, ben croucher, who has been

watching the opening rounds. there are 156 golfers in the field for the 151st open championship. there are seasoned pros, major winners, but i'm not sure anybody quite predicted the south african amateur holding the clubhouse lead at the halfway mark of the first round. he is six played tennis in south africa growing up, but decided to take up golf and it looks like it was a fantastic decision, because he sits on the clubhouse at five under par. what an opening round it was. he currently sits two shots clear of a group including a man 28 years his senior, stewart cink, a winnerfrom 2009, and alsojordan spieth as well. before the tournament got

under way, we warned you about this new hole at the forint of the course, the 17th, one of the shortest holes on the open roster, but already it is causing difficulties to a number of players, including one whose t—shirt didn't find the parting service, the chip shot went into the bunker, and he dropped three shots to four out of the lead before signing for a level par round. if we look at that leaderboard for the opening round, at around the halfway stage, the south african out in front. then a group of three under par. matthew jordan with fine local knowledge to sit at two under par. the defending champion, cam smith, won over with
