the uk's biggest farming insurer says criminals have laid siege to the countryside after it recorded a 22% increase in the cost of rural crime last year. nfu mutual says some thieves are using drones and social media to scope out valuable agricultural equipment, asjoe inwood reports. for luke, this is now part of his daily routine. every day, he spends two hours securing his 4,000—acre cambridgeshire farm. he's even hired private security. that's because he's been the victim of 30 different crimes in just one year. what i'll do is i'll take you to the other side and i'll show you some of the issues. speaking last winter, he told the bbc that not one had been solved. we've had generators stolen, we've had batteries stolen off machinery, pieces of stainless steel. if it's not bolted down well enough, they'll come and cut it out and take it, anyway. according to new figures
11:53 am
from the insurer nfu mutual, rural crime in cambridgeshire has more than doubled in a single year. across the uk, it's up by a fifth. expensive machinery is often stolen, as are advanced gps systems, as well as quad bikes, diesel, heating oil and livestock. it's estimated the total cost to farmers was £50 million. behind that figure is the toll on farmers. so farmers are already under a lot of pressure and so that can really add to a lot of stress for farmers. also, when a really essential piece of equipment goes missing, it means that you can't go to work. so that has a huge effect on your business. it's thought rural crime is increasingly organised, with international gangs often stealing to order. some is recovered, often from eastern europe. but for many farmers, the damage is huge. and with food prices rising faster than ever, this is a crime we all pay for. joe inwood, bbc news.

elsewhere, food price inflation, which is the pace at which prices are rising in the uk, has slowed to its lowest level this year following a drop in prices for staples including oils, fish, and breakfast cereals. food inflation fell to 13.li% injuly, down from 14.6% injune. that's its lowest level since december last year. however, shop prices were 7.6% higher injuly than a year ago. a major shake—up of alcohol taxation has come into effect in the uk, with the price of stronger wines and spirit going up but some others falling. alcohol duty, which has been frozen since 2020, will increase overall as alcoholic drinks are taxed based on their strength, rather than type. the government says the new system is simpler.

miriam will be here with the next programme on bbc news shortly. now it's time for a look at the weather. hello again. the weather for the next few days is going to remain pretty unsettled. it's going to be wet and it's going to be windy at times. and it's also going to be cool, especially so on thursday, when the wind changes direction to more of a northerly. and that in itself will also pull in some showers. so what we have today are some showers across northern ireland and northern england, also some scattered showers across northern scotland and southern england. but by the end of the afternoon, some more substantial rain will be showing its hand across the far southwest and the wind will start to strengthen. temperatures 15 in lerwick, 17 in newcastle to a high of about 22 celsius in london. now through this evening and overnight, the low pressure bringing this rain and the windy conditions pushes northwards and eastwards. the driest conditions will be across the far north of scotland and the is going to strengthen across the south western approaches and also the english channel. as a result, it's not

going to be a cold night. temperatures falling away to between 11 and 17 during the course of wednesday. the low pressure moves across us, taking its wet and windy conditions with it. the strongest winds again will be across southern areas. the met office has a weather warning out for this. we're looking at gusts up to gale force and across the country will see that rain move steadily northwards and eastwards. some of that could be heavy and also thundery. so the kind of gusts we're looking at, a0 to 50 miles an hour in the southwest and the english channel. but with exposure, that could be a bit higher than that. temperatures 15 to about 21 degrees. but if you're in the wind and you're in the rain, it will feel quite cool. so during wednesday evening and into thursday, that low pressure pulls away. the wind changes direction to more of a northerly component. that in itself is a cool direction for us, and it's also going to pull in showers, especially so in areas adjacent to the wind. it will drag in a fair bit of cloud. some of these showers will be heavy. you might hear the odd rumble of thunder in parts of eastern england, for example. and these are our temperatures, 15 to about 21 degrees again north to south, even into thursday. we're looking at friday, i should say, unsettled conditions. and that continues right the way
