11:45 am
hello from the bbc sport centre. i'm hugh ferris. the english premier league season hasn't started yet but there's already been a change of manager. wolves have parted company withjulen lopetegui just a matter of days before their opening game. gary o'neil is expect to take over and it is the takeover of his replacement about the unusual timing. both sites have known this day was coming. my understanding is that an agreement basically forjulian lopetegui to leave was reached after one of the pre—season games last month and he agreed to stay on in order to facilitate this transition in the best way possible. itjust feels as though the club knew what position they were in. julian
11:46 am
lopetegui thought he knew what position he was in and actually, they were in different positions and they were in different positions and they just decided they were in different positions and theyjust decided that it's best to part ways now rather than struggle on for the first few weeks of the season. it's particularly bizarre that a manager has prepared a team in pre—season but won't then take them into the start of that campaign. what was the nature of the disagreements you've been detailing? basically, whenjulian lopetegui basically, when julian lopetegui came basically, whenjulian lopetegui came into the club after the world cup, he was told that there would be money to spend. but i think wolves felt as though they'd made it clear that any money that was spent in january would come out of the budget for the summer. he kept wolves up and i think then he thought he was going to go into the transfer window and bring more plays in. it was quickly pointed out to him that wouldn't be the case. he had a think about it, decided he was going to stay and then when it came to it,
11:47 am
the place that he'd wanted, he couldn't get them either and that's what, i think, couldn't get them either and that's what, ithink, has couldn't get them either and that's what, i think, has led couldn't get them either and that's what, ithink, has led him couldn't get them either and that's what, i think, has led him to conclude that there is no point carrying this on and it's also led wolves to conclude that they were perfectly open in their initial and 0k she additions —— negotiations with the manager and that all comes back to financialfair with the manager and that all comes back to financial fair play and the need for wolves to hit certain targets which were outlined by the chairman last week. west ham have agreed a fee of £30 million — that's around $38 million dollars — for both southampton captainjames ward—prowse and manchester united defender harry maguire. the england international had slipped down the pecking order at old trafford under erik ten hag who took the captaincy off maguire at the start of preseason. four—time winners river plate have been knocked out of the copa libertadores, beaten on penalties in the last 16 by brazilian club internacional
11:48 am
river needed a 90th minute equaliser from robert rojas to take it to spot kicks, levelling the tie at 3—3. but in a lengthy shootout, it was rojas who missed the argentinian side's 10th penalty, allowing internacional*s keeper to score and send them through to the quarter finals. to the women's world cup and where should england win their quarterfinal, they could face co—hosts australia who are not only the last team to beat the european champions. they also have star striker sam kerr back in their ranks after injury. jane dougall reports. the all—time top scorer for australia. sam kerr is the poster girl for this world cup campaign. but the chelsea striker, whose celebratory backflips have become her trademark, started from very humble beginnings. kerr grew up in a suburb of perth called fremantle and her primary school is where her talents were first recognised. samantha practised her backflip over here on the school oval.
11:49 am
she would get out here with a group of girls and they would all try and emulate her. she was always that student that would get up and go and it didn't matter what she picked up, what sort of sporting equipment. a little bit cheeky sometimes at school, push her luck, but because she was such a lovely person, she could get away with it. this mural of sam kerr is right in the heart of the area that she grew up, looking over all the young girls and boys who aspire to be like her. this is where she was taught to play football or soccer as she calls it, and back then, those who knew kerr had a feeling she might become a global superstar. at 15, kerr signed for perth glory where she was spotted by coach bobby despatovski. i saw this kid running so fast, i'm going, oh, this is exceptional. if she starts converting chances to about probably 75 or 80% of the chances converted, she is going to be the best footballer in the world. and she laughed in my face.
11:50 am
she was distraught not to be there, especially playing the world cup on your home soil, you are captain. but unfortunately injuries happen in football and she has to deal with that. but in their first knockout game, a sold—out aussie crowd roared their welcome as sam kerr stepped back onto the pitch. the matildas and the co—hosts have their icon back. jane dougall, bbc news, perth. former world number one caroline wozniacki won her first match on her return to tennis after retiring in 2020. it was a victory at the canadian 0pen. that sets up a meeting with wimbledon champion marketa vondrousova who beat mayar sherif in straight sets in montreal in her first match since becoming a grand slam champion last month. and that's all the sport for now. much more on our website. a whole cast of comedians, theatrical performers and others — have descended on edinburgh for this

11:56 am
and also some drizzle. you might get the odd spot of drizzle across the lake district and western scotland, the pennines as well, but temperatures higher than yesterday. tonight you will find we have areas of cloud that will break. some mist and fog patches forming. the winds that have been prevalent in the last few days across north—east scotland easing and it will be warmer than last night and a more humid one. pulling in the wind from a southerly direction across our shores so thursday looks like it will be the peak this week of the higher temperatures. thursday itself, again like today, will have areas of cloud, a lot of dry weather, some sunshine, but the clouds building in northern ireland through the afternoon and we will start to see showers coming into the south—west. top temperatures tomorrow of 26 or 27 in the south, 21 in the outer hebrides. here is the change, in the south—west we see rain coming in initially then otherwestern areas and moving eastwards through the course of the day. some of the rain will be heavy
11:57 am
especially across northern england and scotland. it will be slower to clear east anglia and the south—east through the day. behind it a return to sunny spells and some showers and breezy. temperatures down on thursday so it will feel fresher, especially in northern and western areas. as we head into the weekend, low pressure takes over with various weather fronts crossing us. you can see at times it will bring some rain particularly in areas close to the centre of the low pressure in the north—west. not only does it turn more unsettled, especially in northern areas, but the temperatures are also falling.
