the premier league is back — we'll hear from the defending champions manchester city day one complete at the women's open — and it's the usa's ally ewing who leads the way welcome along the programme. so it's appears it is now harry kane's decision to make. will he or won't he move to bayern munich? the german club has agreed a deal in principle with tottenham to sign their record goalscoredrfor 100 million euros.... so will he now leave london? kane has a year left
12:46 am
on his contract with spurs, and racked up 280 goals in over 400 appearances. 30 of those goals came last season, in a campaign where spurs finished eighth, missing out on european football. it's a big decision for kane, leave his life long club to head to bayern who are consistent european contenders. matt graveling has been speaking to german journalist katarina delling. i think in germany everyone*s really excited. i think they think it is about to happen because they are offering him great things, things that he might not be able to have here at tottenham. they say they offer him like almost twice or more than twice the amount that he's getting here, about 25 euros million a year, i heard. and also, he can win trophies there. he can't do that here, tottenham. he can obviously win the bundesliga. and i think the hope is that he will also win the champions league with bayern. how has it been? how has it been reported over over in germany? i thought it was really interesting following the german media and then also the media here in the uk because in germany i feel
12:47 am
like everyone was very excited. they were reading into things, they were saying, "0h, it's definitely happening". but then the office got rejected, but they were like, "no, no, we're hopeful this is going to be happening. harry kane is going to germany and here in the uk it was more like, "oh, let's see, maybe he'll stay at tottenham". we don't know what's going to happen. so i think germany was very keen on getting harry kane. for people who don't know and maybe don't follow his football as closely as others by munich, they are the bundesliga champion. how big are they in germany? i mean, they're huge, but they have been struggling a little bit and the past season. so i think the hope is that harry kane can kind of help them a little bit. like, i mean, they almost lost against dortmund. that obviously was very hard for them. so i think they're looking for some fresh blood to kind of help them along, obviously. and harry kane is a very good scorer, so maybe that'll do. winning trophies, bundesliga title all but guaranteed with bayern dominating the league the last 11 times they've won it in a row. the german cup final in berlin, a big goal for them as well.
12:48 am
but most importantly, the champions league at spurs then rebuilt. who knows when they'll make the champions league ain? 59 bayern of course, regulars in the champions league and regular contenders. if you look at the last 13 years, they've won two champions leagues, they've made it to four finals and they made it to four semi—finals. so they are not just a team that occasionally gets a shot, but they are, especially if kane were to come immediately among the contenders. so that's the view from some german experts. well, fans outside the stadium at tottenham had mixed feelings about the news when it started to emerge. yeah. just a bit surprised, really. we've come for the stadium sort of halfway, round and then it was breaking news that he was agreed the deal. so we're just a bit shocked. it's kind of sad to see harry kane go because he's a good striker and he's been scoring lots of goals to the team and he's been really contributing. i mean, they're offering a lot of money. - i give him that.
12:49 am
and if he thinks he can win. trophies and do better there, then, yeah, i understand that. so it remains unclear whether kane will be a part of the new premier league season — which starts on friday. defending champions manchester city kick off the new campaign — away at newly promoted burnley, who are managed by former city captain vincent kompany. after such a successful campaign last season — can pep guardiola's side successfully defend the treble they completed last season? no, i don't think so. it would impossible to do what they have done season. so it's one in a lifetime. so i said to our players, forget about it that so we climb the highest mountain last season what we have done. but the last two days we came down to the mountain and we started from the, you know. from day one, everyone with the same intention.
12:50 am
and we'll be a lot of difficulties to climb as high as possible in our level the mountain. and we'll see. we play against such a good opponent, a team filled with players and people that i know, of course. but mainly probably the best challenge you could ever have, you could ever ask for. and i want the team to embrace this game. and hopefully the fan can fans can do the same. it's quarterfinal time at the women's world cup and on saturday, england will have a tough task on their hands against colombia who have surprised at this tournament. and england have to do it without laurenjames — who was sent off in their win on penalties against nigeria. she has been given a two—match suspension by fifa, which means she'll miss the semi—finals if england get there. jane dougall has been speaking to england's lucy staniforth — who feels the squad can
12:51 am
still cope without her. so i think the strength of our squad has always been the squad. we're not defined by one player, so i think that they'll just be looking forward to the next game. so we're looking forward to the match against colombia. what are you expecting from it? because colombia are a really tough team. yeah, they've, i think they've sort of been the surprise package in the world cup. i know linda caicedo has caught a few headlines. the 18—year—old player that's she's scored twice so far and she looks like a real handful. but i think it should make for a fantastic game. we've got fans here. they've got fans here. and yeah, i think that it's it's one of those games where we really have to be at our best to, you know, i guess maybe improve on some things that didn't go well against nigeria and the test that colombia are going to pose.
12:52 am
i think it's going to be a really exciting match, so far, and i'm really looking forward to it. real madrid goalkeeper thibaut courtois is likely to miss the majority of the upcoming season — after suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. the 31—year—old belgium international will have surgery in the coming days. he was named best goalkeeper in the world at last year's ballon d'or awards. there's been some action tonight on the pitch as well with the qualifiers for the europa conference league, where there were disappointing defeats for legia warsaw, hearts and derry city. but a much better night for hibernian at easter road. they have one foot in the next round after beating swiss side luzern 3—1. the second leg is next thursday — and if hibernian progress, they'll play aston villa next. the purple heather was popping on the walton heath course on day one of the final golf

major of the year — and it's american ally ewing who is heading up the women's 0pen leaderboard. she found 11 of 15 fairways to help on her way to a round of 68, which included an eagle on the 16th, she's four under. five players are joined together on the leaderboard just one shot back, including 2019 us women's open champion jeongun lee. south africa's ashleigh buhai won at muirfield last year, but had a trickier start to her title defence, ending the day two over par. so it's exciting to get in, you know, the good first round. a long way to go from sunday. you know, it's great to put a good first round together. but major championship golf, you can never really lose focus. so i'll get some food and take, you know, get a good night's sleep and come back and take on the next day.

nick kyrgios has withdrawn from the us open due to injury the australian has been hampered by injuries, and missed wimbledon due to a wrist problem. he's played just one atp tour match this year, slipping 57 places down the world rankings to 92. third—seeded casper ruud was dumped out of the canadian 0pen in toronto following a three—set defeat to the unseeded alejandro davidovich fokina and it was disappointment for the home fans too as milos raonic of canada failed to progress. he lost in straght sets to the american mackenzie mcdonald 6—3 6—3. mcdonald will play fokina for a place in the semis. and stand by for a bizarre moment in major league baseball as one fielder was bamboozled by a light. have a look at this. kyle isbel*s effort looked

as though he was in danger of being caught, but masataka yoshida couldn't quite reach and then lost the ball as he expected it to hit the ground. except it didn't — the ball instead broke one of the scoreboard lights and nestled inside the fixture, causing confusion across the field of play. they across the field of play. finally found it. hobbies are. they finally found it. hobbies are. not sure i've seen anything like that before. you can get all the latest sports news at from the bbc sport app, orfrom our website — that's bbc.co.uk/sport. from me and the rest of the team at the bbc sport centre, goodbye. good morning. we finally got there.

on thursday, we had some much awaited summer sunshine and warmth. fairly widespread across the country, but temperatures peaked just over 28 degrees. however, there was quite a lot of cloud around, and in northern ireland by the end of the afternoon, some threatening—looking skies. and that's because this frontal system moving in and is bringing some rain as we speak. that is moving its way steadily north and east, some heavy bursts of rumble of thunder mixed in there as it pushes its way across scotland. the trailing tail of that frontal system, just a band of cloud, the odd spot or two of nuisance rain into the south—east. but it will be an incredibly mild, muggy night. so a very humid start to our friday morning. and there will be some sunshine. early morning cloud breaking off across south—east england, some sunny spells coming through. and with that south—westerly flow, we continue to drag in the risk of a few showers, chiefly out to the west. the northern isles will stay quite wet and disappointing in terms of the feel of the weather, with only a high expected of 15 degrees.
12:57 am
but elsewhere, with the sunshine, and with fewer showers in eastern england, we may well see highs of 27 once again. now, as we move into the weekend, there is a risk of some showers through friday night into the early hours of saturday morning in the south—east. and then this area of low pressure is going to just tuck itself into the far north—west of the country. so showers more frequent, most widespread the further north and west you are. some of those will push a little further inland,
12:58 am
but sheltered eastern england perhaps seeing the driest of the weather on saturday. and as a result, the warmest of the weather — 2a celsius is still 75 fahrenheit. almost a repeat performance as we go into sunday. again, that low not moving very far. so most frequent showers to the north—west. there will be some pushing their way across england and wales. and we need to keep an eye on some rain potentially moving into the south—west by the end of sunday. top temperatures generally 18—23 degrees. so that frontal system potentially running along the south. and then as we move into tuesday and wednesday, an area of high pressure is set to build. so we could see a little more in the way of showery weather to begin our new working week. but the warmth and dry weather may well return as we move to the end of the week
