3:30 pm
this is bbc news, the headlines reports have come to us from an official in pakistan saying that four children have now been rescued from a cable car which is dangling over a river in pakistan. efforts are continuing to get the remaining people who are stuck in the cable car to safety. a reminder there. these are the latest pictures that we have of the rescue. this shows is the ongoing operation. we were talking to an official earlier who explained that it is a very delicate and difficult operation. you can see
3:31 pm
that the helicopters. as much as they are part of the rescue operation, the helicopters are a challenge. some of the additional wind that the rotors on the helicopter create, can also be problematic in that very precarious and delicate rescue operation. if you're just and delicate rescue operation. if you'rejustjoining us on bbc news we can tell you now that for children have been rescued from the helicopter in pakistan. we got that confirmation from the central secretary of information from the pakistan's peoples party. i spoke to him earlier today. just a reminder that cable cars are used quite often in pakistan, especially in remote mountainous areas. you can see on the map there. this cable car was
3:32 pm
used to transport children from the village that they lived in to the school that they go to. that is when tragedy struck earlier today. as the rescue continues there is a challenge because the sun has now set. it is dark now, it is evening and that remains a huge challenge. not only do you have the weather conditions you also have a rescue operation that is continuing in the darkness, or near darkness. a military commando, we were told earlier, attempted to reach the car while hanging from a helicopter. we don't have any details exactly now, about how the four children were rescued from that but these are remarkable pictures. if you are just joining us now, remarkable pictures which show that ongoing rescue

operation in pakistan in khyber pakhtunkhwa province. the children who were on this helicopter, the cable car up, pardon me, they were going to school from their village when one of the cables snapped. that left the car stuck at some 274 metres above ground. that is around 900 feet. we have been told by the bbc that a 16—year—old boy in the cable car has a heart condition and was unconscious for at least two hours. it is unclear if that 16 boy may be one of the four who has now been rescued. we do know that the children who have been rescued have now been taken to a helipad and they
3:34 pm
are now getting medical attention. for more on this my colleague courtney pembridge has been following these developments. some positive developments, i spoke to an official in pakistan, who now says that four children have been rescued. this is now getting trickier and trickier, isn't it? yes, as you have been speaking about, losing light is a big complication in terms of this rescue effort. also there have been strong winds all day which has hampered efforts there too. we are hearing that some of those first children have been taken to safety and that they are all stable. there are still competing reports about italy how many people have come out, have been brought out. at this point we know that the ones that have been brought have been taken by helicopter. there is of course an alternate plan that is of course an alternate plan that is under way to try to reach them, by laying cables along that line. it is unclear whether that work is
3:35 pm
still continuing, or whether they are sticking with the helicopter plan, which at this point, has got the first children out. is it plan, which at this point, has got the first children out.— the first children out. is it likely that they will _ the first children out. is it likely that they will change _ the first children out. is it likely that they will change their - the first children out. is it likely that they will change their plan | the first children out. is it likely - that they will change their plan now that they will change their plan now thatis that they will change their plan now that is getting darker? i that they will change their plan now that is getting darker?— that is getting darker? i think it is a case of _ that is getting darker? i think it is a case of throwing _ that is getting darker? i think it is a case of throwing everything that is getting darker? i think it i is a case of throwing everything at this. we have seen crowds at the theme, authorities there, we are getting lots of reports. we have been speaking to government ministers too. the whole nation and the whole world, indeed, is watching this very closely. i think they would be reticent to put all their eggsin would be reticent to put all their eggs in one basket and stick with the helicopter because, as i said, strong winds, also the rotor blades create their own winds, which has caused a problem and made the situation even more precarious, because of course that cable car is just hanging from one side. any pressure from the wind onto that cable will make it more difficult. that is one thing they are looking at and of course losing light is another thing. we have been looking at pictures of the types of cable cars used in the situation. they are
3:36 pm
open. you have opening at either side. is not contained cabin where you can sit at any angle and you will be inside it. that is another complication and as you have alluded to, the 16—year—old, we heard from one of the adults who was on board the cable car a few hours ago now, saying that one of the young men, young boys, rather, a 16—year—old had a heart condition and had become unconscious. that was a few hours ago. and then lost communication with that adult on—board. the phone went dead. we are hearing that the children that have been taken out are in a stable condition. it is unclear whether this is the 16—year—old but the heart condition. that is what they are racing to try to do as we lose the light. you can see these pictures, these are the latest we have but light is fast diminishing. sundown was a little over half an hour ago.

had the same thing about zip line being created, but this was not confirmed by any officer as yet. they may say something about it soon enough, because right now, the military is there and they have said that they are not going to leave the area until each and every one of the children and adults is rescued from the cable car. children and adults is rescued from the cable car-— children and adults is rescued from the cable car. how did this accident ha--en? the cable car. how did this accident happen? around — the cable car. how did this accident happen? around 6:30am, - the cable car. how did this accident| happen? around 6:30am, according the cable car. how did this accident. happen? around 6:30am, according to a local administrator, _ happen? around 6:30am, according to a local administrator, he _ happen? around 6:30am, according to a local administrator, he said - happen? around 6:30am, according to a local administrator, he said that - a local administrator, he said that children were on their way to school and there were two of the locals with them as well. there are six children on this cable car and two adults as well. it makes it eight people on this cable car. it is locally made. this was made because people were finding it difficult to go from one place to another, so a local, a daly route for them, so this gives them for ten minutes to reach this goal. this is not the only place which uses them. many of the mountainous regions within

many also have received threatening phone calls and others have voluntarily gone into hiding because of the fear of retaliation. we have documented these human rights violations across the country, across afghanistan, and the impact that we see is that there is little confidence from the people, from communities, in the general amnesty that was announced by the taliban, questioning the commitment of the taliban and the de facto authorities to the general amnesty, and really, a concern and a climate of fear, particularly for those this is meant to provide protection and security. the taliban say they have no knowledge of extrajudicial killings or other amnesty violations. the
