7:32 pm
the pressure continues to grow on luis rubiales who is refusing to resign after kissing player jenni hermoso on the lips following spain's women's world cup final win over england. in the last few hours, spain's entire coaching staff from that world cup win, except for head coachjorge vilda, have resigned over the row. joe lynskey reports. spain's winning world cup moments could soon become a legal battle. this was the kiss from their fa president that overshadowed the week they became world champions. luis rubiales has refused to resign, but football's world governing body has now taken action. they have also ordered him and the federation not to contact the player involved. commentator: hermoso! jenni hermoso is now at the centre of a dispute with her own bosses.

last night, she said in a statement: but the spanish football federation responded, saying the president will show each of the lies that are spread either by someone on behalf of the player or by the player herself. they will now take legal action. the rfef say these pictures show rubiales is right and that this lift from hermoso meant she also gave consent. she has denied that action even happened. translation: is that so serious that i have to leave, _ having done the bestjob for spanish football? yesterday, mr rubiales had been expected to stand down but instead came defiance. translation: i will not resign. i will not resign. he said five times, "i will not resign." but this was the reaction in spanish papers this morning. the headline in marca read

"global embarrassment." all of the world cup—winning coaching team, except for the head coach, have now stood down in protest. while 81 female players say they won't play for their country until the president is gone. the coach of the champions of la liga gave this message. translation: i would like to give my unconditional support _ tojenni hermoso and the players of women's soccer. secondly, i want to condemn the conduct of the president of the federation which i find unacceptable. thirdly, i am sorry that the historical world cup milestone is not been talked about and that this conduct is intolerable. it is just six days since women's football in spain had its greatest night. but a world cup win meant to unify a nation has instead brought a bitter fallout. next to an eventful day

in the premier league, nowhere more so than at old trafford where manchester united came from 2—0 down to beat nottingham forest. the visitors had a dream start, with taiwo awoniyi putting them a goal up afterjust two minutes and it got even better when willy boly doubled that lead two minutes later. but united recovered from their worst start in premier league history, christian eriksen pulled a goal back before half time, casemiero equalised early in the second half. forest had a player sent off before bruno fernandez got the winner — to the relief of manager erik ten hag. horror start, but then the character of the team was brilliant. stayed so calm, so composed and get back in the game, stick to the belief, stick to the plan. and then you see, we played some very good football. scored three good goals, so brilliant comeback. we got in some really good positions to score a goal but then you need luck to be on your side,
7:36 pm
it's clear that that wasn't with regards to some things the game went. although... although the plays give everything in the performance, we still come away disappointed. after the full time whistle at old trafford, thousands of manchester united fans remained inside the stadium to protest against the glazer family, repeating their calls for the owners to go. they'd indicated last year that they could sell the club but negotiations are believed to be continuing with prospective investors with no clarity on when they might end. there was drama at arsenal today as well as they dropped points for the first time this season as fulham fought back to get a draw. joao palhinha with the goal that made it 2—2 with three minutes to go, all the more impressive because fulham had a player sent off before that. mikel arteta's side were a goal down inside a minute before saka and nketiah turned the game around, but there was one final twist with the points shared. we dominated the full game,
7:37 pm
we created i don't know how many chances, i lost count. we should have scored five, six, seven goes easily. the most difficult thing is to get back in the game against a team that is well—organised. you have to defend your box in one corner, the only chance they have to score and you don't and then you get penalised, punished and you get another two chances, don't score and that is the story of the game. the amount of things we did do merit to win the game very comfortably, we end up with one point. we know what we need and we need many things still until the end of the market but the soul of this group of players, the quality, the results, the organisation, how we help them is here. it didn't go from last season, it is still here and we are going to show that during the season. of course, we need more numbers, more bodies, quality to help us to be stronger. it's back—to—back wins for tottenham now after they won 2—0 win at bournemouth. james maddison opened the scoring

early on in the first half after getting on the end of a lovely ball from pape sarr. ange postecoglou's side making sure they started the game on the front foot. and it only got better for spurs in the second half. a well—worked team goal meant dejan kulusevski was able to take the game away from bournemouth. life after harry kane is so far so good for new manager ange postocoglou. i thought first half was really good. some of our football and intensity and play and tempo was excellent. we knew bournemouth would put us under a bit of pressure, but i thought we handled it really well. didn't start the second half too well, first ten, 15 minutes but once we got the second goal, i thought we controlled the game really well. really pleased that, through most of it, we maintained our discipline. more problems for sean dyche and everton, its three defeats from three at the start of the season for them, as they were beaten 1—0

by wolves at goodison park. everton remain bottom but its wolves' first points of the season. all premier league wins are massive, especially on the road. especially your first one with a new group. so, it had a feeling about it, but, yeah, not because it was everton or because we were both on zero points, just really because it's a premier league game away from home working with a new group trying to instill belief in what we do. which they have, but there is nothing like a result to convince you that you're on the right lines. joachim andersen's second—half goal secured a valuable point for crystal palace at brentford. the home side had taken the lead in the first half but both teams lacked a cutting edge and palace were deserving of the draw after stepping it up in the second half. brentford were good, asked a lot of us. we didn't concede that many goal chances but i thought they had the better of the play during that period. luckily, we came out in the second

half and changed that around. i thought for large parts of the second half, we were the team that were in control, looking as though we might get an equaliser even before we did. when we got one, of course, it was our centre back making a corner run in the six—yard box which is quite frankly something i'd like to say we work on but we don't. in the last hour, west ham have beaten brighton 3—1 at the amex to move to the top of the premier league. albion began the day as leaders themselves with two wins from two but went behind after a quarter of an hour when james ward—prowse scored his first goal for his new club. west ham spent the rest of the first half defending and after the break can thank alphonse areola for keeping out evan ferguson. not long after, the hammers broke and jarrod bowen ran practically the whole length of the pitch to double their lead. things swiftly got even worse for the hosts as michail antonio

made it 3—0 to the visitors. pascal gross pulled one back, but 3—1 it finished. kemar roofe showed why michael beale talked up his importance to rangers with the opening goal in a 2—0 win at ross county in the scottish premiership. the manager spoke on friday about the striker being key to his plans this season despite nine new signings — and he opened the scoring with this volley — marking his first start in 16 months. james tavernier*s strike sealed rangers victory, four days on from drawing 2—2 with psv at ibrox in a champions league play—off. and rangers' gap to the league leaders celtic is just a point after brendan rodgers side were held to a 0—0 draw by stjohnstone. hibs remain bottom, its three defeats from three for them after they lost 3—2 at home to livingston. motherwell in second beat kilmarnock 2—1.

england's preparations for the rugby world cup have gone from bad to worse today — with fiji beating them for the first time ever. it finished 30—22 to the pacific islanders at twickenham, meaning england go into next months world cup having lost five of their last six matches. ben croucher was watching. there's not been much for england to smile about before the world cup. defeats, suspensions and injuries but against fiji, one last chance to head to france with some form. with the rain falling, it felt more like autumn or spring than summer. england in blue, quite like may though. commentator: jonny may! england 8—0 fiji. a first try by an england back in more than six hours of rugby. the heavens opened but the scoring dried up — for england anyway. nayacalevu when fiji had a player in the sin bin and some of england's banned bunch could do nothing about it. the players on the pitch were helpless too. commentator: and england's hole gets darker and darker and darker! _ from the abyss into the light withjoe marchant*s converted score pulling england to within one

last year's us open. he's been speaking ahead of the start of this year's tournament at flushing meadows on moday. he'll be hoping to end 2023 with three of the four grand slam titles. the first feeling that i have is excitement to come back because it is the biggest arena we have in our sport, biggest stadium and definitely the most fun, electric, exciting atmosphere out there in tennis. playing night sessoin in arthur ashe, no doubt. i am very excited and i will be able to play on the opening night on monday. one other person who's happy to be back at the us open is the former world number one caroline wozniacki — who's come out of retirement. 33 years old now with two children — she says she's happy to be joining a few other mothers on the tour. most of all, i am just proud that we are quite a few mums on tour that have paved the way for the future generation that it is possible to take a break, have a family and come back and, you know, the women have showed that you can still play at a very, very high level.

britain's domination in the women's kl2 finals at the para—canoe world championships continues, thanks to paralympic champion charlotte henshaw. she won today's final in just over 48 seconds— for her fifth gold in the event and her eighth world title overall. it was a british one two, with emma wiggs, taking silver. gb have won gold and silver at the last eight editions. i caught up with charlotte henshaw earlier. i started by asking her how she is feeling. i'm pretty sore at the moment, actually, it has not been long since i raced. immensely happy to win another world championship gold medal and more importantly, secure the slot for that event for the paralympic games next year. that was myjob coming in, the team all have jobs this week and that was mine. this is absolutely the first step on the ladder towards the paralympic games. we can't be selected if we don't have the quota spots come next spring.
7:53 pm
but it would mean the absolute world, when i was ten years old i met a paralympic gold medallist and i knew it was what i wanted to do some day. so, to still be competing with the best in the world at the ripe old age of 36 having not known that my career would last this long, i feel immensely thankful and really privileged to still be able to do it and having had the career i've had so far. how special was it, charlotte, that it was a british 1—2 with emma wiggs in silver? yeah, emma and i have been racing each other since i came overfrom swimming in 2017, it was. thankfully, every major championship we have managed to get either one of us on the top spot step of the podium. the other in the silver medal position. we're immensely proud of that

and it is testament to the depths of talent in our british canoeing squad that we have world gold and silver medallists in this event and we are very proud to give up the tradition today. —— keep up the tradition. here's another one, i think i'm right in saying this that hope gordon got into para canoeing a big part because of you, charlotte, and she won her first gold yesterday. how proud did that make you? i mean, i remember when hope turned up at the gym in nottingham and it was kind of a, "what are you doing here?" she said, "it's because i saw your post about it on your social media," and i knew hope from my swimming days, we crossed paths many a time. i am actually usually in that race that hope won yesterday, because of the quota spot allocation i had to take a step back this time. it was tough for me to watch it without being on the start line, i always want to be out there, but i was immensely proud of her for winning that first gold medal and also, she did the job for the team and she brought that quota spot back to the uk and,

yeah, it was a brilliant afternoon of racing and, you know, there is a few of us former swimmers on the para canoe team so we like to think that kind of gave us a little bit of a step towards what we are achieving now in boats. charlotte henshaw speaking to me earlier. frankie dettori has won the ebor handicap at york on—board the 7—1 willie mullins trained absurde on his last apperance at the knavesmire. dettori overcame a wide draw to claim victory inside the final furlong over sweet william and live in the dream. the 52—year—old had earlier won the city of york stakes on the 9—4 favourite kinross for trainer ralph beckett. detorri is set to retire at the end of the flat season. that's all from sportsday. just remind you, the last 20 minutes that incredible story for ben pattinson taking bronze unexpectedly in the men's 800 metre final. the penultimate night there in budapest

at the world athletics championship, head over to bbc one or i play if you want to know what else is happening there with the finals of the four by 100 metre relay is, men and women still to come but for me and women still to come but for me and the team, that is all from sportsday. goodbye. hello there. part one of the weekend has been very showery indeed. we've seen some torrential downpours in places with flashes of lightning, rumbles of thunder. we can expect much of the same for part two of the weekend as well. now, most of the heavy showers and thunderstorms which we've had through the day will fade out this evening and many places to turn dry with lengthy, clear skies. still some cloud, one or two showers across some western coasts. later in the night, we'll start to see this weather front working into western parts of northern ireland. that'll bring outbreaks of rain here. but under the clear skies, it'll be fairly cool, i think, for the time of year. so, this weather front then very slowly pushes its way eastwards across northern ireland, eventually crossing the irish sea, where it'll be very weak featured, no more than a band of cloud. so i think for northern ireland for sunday, although it starts bright, will see the clouds build and a light and patchy

rain will move in from the west through the day. for scotland, england and wales, it's a day of sunshine and showers and again, some of the heaviest showers will be across eastern scotland, eastern parts of england, with some rumbles of thunder, flashes of lightning there as well. top temperatures, 21 or 22 degrees. otherwise, it's the high teens for most. and expect a shower as well for part two of the weekend, both the reading and the leeds festival, some good sunny spells in between, temperatures around 19 or 20 celsius for the notting hill carnival, where the greater chance of catching a shower will be on sunday. it looks largely dry on monday with some good sunny spells and temperatures in the low 20 celsius. now, as we head through sunday evening, it looks like that weather front continues to push its way eastwards into western britain. a band of cloud, one or two spots of rain on it. but for most places, the showers will fade away and it'll be another clear and fairly cool night to come. so that's sunday night out of the way. let's head into monday. and for many of us, monday's a bank holiday. this front, this weather front, will be a very weak feature as it crosses england and wales.
7:58 pm
so, patchy cloud and one or two spots of rain as it pushes its way eastwards. otherwise, quite a bit of sunshine around on either side of that front. and we'll start to see this sunshine appear in abundance across scotland and northern ireland. temperatures 21, maybe 22 degrees in the south—east. again, it's the high teens further north and west and it stays quite showery and unsettled across the country for this upcoming week, although we will see a quieter spell with some sunshine and warmth across england and wales for a time.
