victory, as japan made it a tough night for england. it was neither a scoreline nor a performance to worry any of the tournament's main contenders. lewis ludlam forced his way over from close range, for the only try of a first half littered with england errors. we probably didn't perform the way we wanted to again, but credit to them. they made it really, really tough for us. the ball was so greasy, and they played in the right areas of the pitch and made us really run and work hard to fill position as well. so yeah, we're, we're not happy but we're, we're glad we've got the win. fiji caused the shock of the tournament so far. they beat australia, 22—15, in pool c. josua tuisova scored the fijians* only try of the game, to give them their third ever win over the wallabies.

personally, yeah, 100%, and as i said, i'm 100% responsible for it. you know, i've gone down the line of picking a young team and i want this young team to be a good team. at the moment, we had a bad day today, which can happen, and we've got to be better next week. so that's my responsibility. arsenal have beaten everton, 1—0, at goodison park, to move to fourth place in the table. arsenal replaced england goalkeeper aaron ramsdale with david raya, but he had little to do, as a leandro trossard goal was enough to secure victory at a ground they've struggled on recently. the result leaves everton without a league win so far this season, and in the bottom three. we haven't really got to grips with the ball. the man were telling us that we had, you know, against these sides. that's your biggest chance to put them on the back foot
2:47 am
is when you turn the ball over. we gave it away so many times and when we did have a chance to get the ball and play, playing backwards, playing backwards, play backwards. so you never ask a question. so at the end of the day, the two boxes are the most important thing and we're getting punished in one and we're not taking advantage of the other. six years is a long time without a win, but there were reasons for it, and we discussed that a lot and the things that we had to do much better and with more purpose and and be more disciplined as well. and i think we played a great game. we didn't give absolutely anything away. you can win in many different ways. but to come to this ground, against this kind of opponent, and to shift the game to the area that we wanted and to the way that we wanted, big credit to the players. chelsea's stuttering start to the premier league season continued at bournemouth today. the game finished 0—0. both sides had chances, but couldn't convert. chelsea have just one win from their first five league games under mauricio pochettino, and are down in 14th. bournemouth are still chasing their first victory of the season, and are a place below chelsea in the table. i cannot lie.
2:48 am
i think we are missing something in the last third. they're more calm, more relaxed, you know, to be more clinical in front of the goal. i think we were creating chances. we were fighting. i think. i think it's about the process and that is why our circumstances, it's obvious that these are not the best, but we need to keep positive. today was our best game, i would say, overall. it's true that we didn't score, but we were close to beating a very, very good team like chelsea. and we we have to continue keep pushing, believing in what we are doing and i think is the way. mason greenwood played senior football for the first time in 20 months when he came off the bench for new club, getafe, this afternoon, in la liga. greenwood hadn't played since january 2022, when he was charged with a number of serious offences, including rape and assault. the charges were later dropped. he denied the accusations. greenwood, who'sjoined the spanish club on loan, came on as a substitute in the 77th minute of the game against osasuna, with the score at 2—2.
2:49 am
getafe went on to win the match 3—2. in la liga, real madrid are in action against real sociedad. real sociedad took an early lead, but real madrid came back to win, 2—1, which puts madrid top of the league standings, ahead of barcelona. there were also wins for getafe, villarreal and sevilla. in formula i, ferrari's carlos sainz won the singapore grand prix, ending red bull's run of 14 race wins this season. the spaniard led from start to finish, holding off mclaren's lando norris, in a thriling end to the race. mercedes* lewis hamilton finished third, after team—mate george russell crashed on the final lap, while championship leader max verstappen finished in fifth place, to bring an end to his run of ten consecutive race wins. an incredible weekend, perfect race execution. we didn't get it easy, obviously, either. we had our own challenges out there today, but we nailed everything that we had to nail today. and we put together a very good race to bring home that pi that tastes honestly as good
2:50 am
as it can taste. american sepp kuss has been confirmed as the winner of cycling's last grand tour of the year, the vuelta a espana, following the final stage in madrid. australia's kaden groves was first across the finish line in the capital of spain. that saw him claim the sprinter*s green jersey. half—a—minute behind, in the leader's red jersey, kuss rolled in, with his jumbo visma team mates, tour de france winner, yonas vingergaur, and giro d'italia champion, primoz roglic. it's the first time one team has won all three grand tours in the same year. what a finish to the pga at wentworth, as tyrell hatton came close to winning, but was outdone by new zealand's ryan fox, who stormed back, after a triple bogey earlier on the final round, to finish out in front. but the drama went right to the final moments, as our golf correspondent iain carter explains. it was still
2:51 am
a thrilling finish. tyrrell hatton with a big surge up to finish at i7—under—par. getting up and down as he did on the 18th. arun rai with a chance to win with an eagle putt that shaved the edge of the hole from around about 30, 35 feet. had that dropped, he'd have got to 18—under—par. but fox needed a birdie at the last to get to that magic number. he had to lay up and then, from 108 yards out, hit his approach to around about five, six feet and then very calmly stroked home the putt, down the slope and into the middle of the hole. and that was the biggest win of his career, no doubt about that. punched the air in absolute delight, a very popular winner, and new zealand's first winner of this historic championship at wentworth. there will be an element of frustration, certainly, for tyrrell hatton. he was the champion in 2020 and he gave it a real good go today. but i think he, like an awful lot of the european ryder cup players, will feel very satisfied with his final competitive outing before,
2:52 am
of course, the big match in rome, the week after next. i spoke to rory mcilroy earlier today. he was round in 65 to climb up the leaderboard and he made the point that there were so many of that european team on this leaderboard, the likes of hatton, sepp straka was there, albehr had a good week as well as we've discussed. jon rahm had a big finish today with his round of 68 to finish in fourth place. so some real big guns for europe showing some really good form in their last competitive outing. bob mcintyre is going to be playing in france next week, but all 12 making the cut. and i think when you contrast that with the americans for whom so many of the players haven't played since the tour championship, they're going to be five weeks without competitive action by the time they get to rome. i think there's a bit of a feeling that europe have something of an advantage. that said, justin thomas

and max homa have been playing very well in california this week. the bbc*s golf correspondent and an interesting few weeks ahead for golf. to cricket, and south africa have won their one—day series final decider with australia in johannesburg by 122 runs. the tourists won the toss and put south africa into bat. captain temba bavuma was run out for a second—ball duck. quinton de kock, playing in his final 0di at home, was out for 27. aiden markram's 93 helped south africa to 315. and australia couldn't get near it again — all out for 193. tennis, and dan evans and neal skupski saved four match points to win the doubles match, which sent great britain into the knock—out stage of the davis cup finals, at france's expense. evans also won his singles match against arthur fils, spending nearly five hours on court in total on sunday. cameron norrie struggled

and couldn't beat ugo humbert, which meant that, with the tie levelled at 1—1, it was up to evans and skupski to secure the victory against nicolas mahut and edouard roger—vasselin, and they did it, by winning a deciding—set tie—break. the eight team knock—out stage finals will take place in malaga in november. you can get all the latest sports news at from the bbc sport app, orfrom our website — that's bbc.co.uk/sport. from me, and the rest of the team at the bbc sport centre, goodbye. hello. it is shaping up to be a very

unsettled and autumnal week of weather, with some strong winds and some heavy rain, and talking of heavy rain, on sunday, parts of south west england had localised flash flooding, because of some really intense downpours and thunderstorms that drifted up from the south. you can see the shower clouds there on our earlier satellite picture. we've also got a couple of different frontal systems pushing in from the west, so, whichever way you slice it, quite a wet start to monday for many of us. still some hefty showers across parts of eastern england, first thing. then here comes our band of rain, some particularly wet weather across parts of scotland. behind our rain bands, we see a mixture of sunny spells and showers. some of those could be on the heavy side, and also behind our rain band, a cooler, fresherfeel. so, temperatures north to south, 13 to 20 degrees. so, cool and fresh, as we head into monday night, some clear spells, still some showers, and then here comes our next weather system, a zone of cloud and outbreaks of heavy rain across northern ireland, south—west scotland, north—west england, parts of wales, turning very mild down towards the south west, rather chilly across north—eastern parts of scotland. so here comes our next frontal system for tuesday
2:56 am
that is going to bring some heavy bursts of rain, particularly wet, i think, over high ground in south—west scotland, north—west england and parts of wales. to the south of that, some patchy rain and a fair amount of cloud. but it is going to be windy, particularly for england, wales, northern ireland. inland spots could see gusts of 50 mp. inland spots could see gusts of 50 mph. around some of the coasts, the winds could be a little bit stronger than that. temperature—wise, well, we could get to 20 to 21 degrees, if the cloud breaks at all down towards the south of england and south wales. tuesday night into wednesday, we see all these white lines, all these isobars on the chart. that shows us that it is going to be windy still, windy on wednesday, particularly just ahead of this band of cloud and rain, this cold front, which will be pushing its way southwards and eastwards through the day. to the north and west of that, well, we see a mix of sunny

spells and showers returning — temperatures of 14 to 22 degrees. for the end of the week, it does stay very unsettled showers or longer spells of rain, and it will often be windy, particularly in the northwest of the uk as we head into next weekend.

according to satellite data. helena humphries here, welcome to the programme. world leaders have started arriving in new york for the annual united nations general assembly — which kicks off on monday. this year's summit takes place against the backdrop of russia's war in ukraine — and amid growing tensions between the us and china. despite that, leaders of four of the five countries that hold permanent seats on the un security council are expected to skip the event — including russian president putin and china's president xi who also missed a recent gathering of the g20 in india, as well as two surprising no—shows — uk prime minister rishi sunak and french president emmanuel macron — who cited scheduling conflicts for missing this week's summit. in spite of those notable absences, the un says that it wants to get global leaders back on track with targets,
