it was time to enjoy the company of comrades and to reminisce, a day to remember. and for one former soldier, a day to never forget. john maguire, bbc news, biggin hill. time for a look at the weather. here's chris fawkes. and we were seeing some of the effects of the storm and the rain in the south—west of england? the south-west of england? that's riaht, the south-west of england? that's right. ben. — the south-west of england? that's right. ben. i— the south-west of england? that's right, ben. iwonder_ the south-west of england? that's right, ben. iwonder if— the south-west of england? that's right, ben. i wonder if quite - the south-west of england? that's right, ben. i wonder if quite a - the south-west of england? that's right, ben. i wonder if quite a few| right, ben. i wonder if quite a few people are a bit tired this morning, and the chances are it was these noisy thunderstorms which were responsible. in some areas we had extreme falls of rain, in swindon, one months* worth in the space of an hour. we had some flash flooding in parts of devon yesterday as well. this week will often be wet and windy because we have got a very powerfuljet windy because we have got a very powerful jet stream across the atlantic which is blowing at 150mph,
1:31 pm
it is the jet stream which makes and moves our areas of low pressure, so moves our areas of low pressure, so we moves our areas of low pressure, so we will be seeing many low—pressures coming over the uk over the next few days, so it will be turbulent and blustery. today, we have got a band of rain pushing eastwards, and essentially this afternoon it is a case of sunshine and showers, the is pretty frequent across the north—west, there will be big gaps between the showers towards wales and the south—west, there will be some places which have drier periods. overnight, a few more showers but then later in the night we will see some heavier rain start to spread in across northern ireland initially before spreading to scotland and parts of england and wales. mild in the south, cooler air in the north. tomorrow this band of rain will be with us and over the next couple of days we will see some very large rainfall totals across the hills of wales and north—west england, which could cause some localised flooding. it will be a gusty winds driving the wend rain ever further northwards, the gusts
1:32 pm
could be up to 60mph on exposed coasts of north wales but it will be blowing for most of us, and there will be some tree branches coming down. there could be some small weather impacts tomorrow. temperatures generally into the teens and then, five days ago, we had this harry kane spinning around in the atlantic, it turned into a normal area of low pressure over the weekend and brought some strong winds and some heavy rain to eastern canada and the remnants of that hurricane are actually tied up with this area of low pressure which will be affecting our shores on wednesday. it is another wet and windy day, this cold front coming across will have some intense rainfall in quite a short space of time and the winds will be gusty on and ahead of that front. to the north—west we get some very strong winds as well potentially for western scotland, gusts could be up to 70mph but there is still a bit of uncertainty, the strength of the gusts depends on exactly how deep that low pressure gets. the outlook is wet and windy, probably the best day for staying dry with a bit of

england head coach steve borthwick says they are still a work in progress, but will become a more attacking force the more they play at the rugby world cup. they were booed and whistled by their own supporters in the early stages of their bonus point win againstjapan in nice. they only led by a point early in the second half before a fortuitous try from captain courtney lawes gave them some breathing space. next up for england are chile, the lowest—ranked team in the tournament, and then samoa. they should reach the quarterfinals. our correspondent andy swiss was in nice for the victory over japan by 3a points to 12. cheering it was all smiles and selfies beforehand, but england fans flocked to nice knowing this trip to the seaside could be anything but simple. go, england and go, japan! japan had beaten south africa, ireland and scotland at recent world cups.
1:35 pm
for england, the challenge was clear. and japan was soon ahead via the boot of rikiya matsuda. their fans enjoyed that. by contrast, england looked rattled, and although lewis ludlam crashed over for their first try of the tournament, the errors were everywhere as england led just 13—9 at the break. and when matsuda coolly slotted another penalty, japan were only a point behind. butjust when england needed some luck, they got it. it looked like they*d knocked the ball on before courtney lawes went over, but replays showed it came offjoe marler*s head — that*s ok — and, remarkably, it was a try. and from there, england finally pulled clear. first, freddie steward eased any lingering nerves.. gets it, scores it. ..beforejoe marchant rounded things off with a flourish to seal victory and a valuable bonus point. we probably didn*t perform the way we wanted to again, but credit to them —
1:36 pm
they made it really, really tough for us. the ball was so greasy, they played in the right areas of the pitch and made us really run and work hard to fill position, as well. so, yeah, we*re... we*re not happy, but we*re glad we*ve got the win. well, this was a largely scrappy display by england, but while they*ll have to improve, it*s another win and another step towards the quarter finals. andy swiss, bbc news, nice. elswhere, the holders, south africa, trounced romania. and england*s previous coach, eddiejones, was on the receiving end of one of the biggest shocks at the world cup so far, as his australia side lost 22—15 to fiji. it was only the pacific islanders* third victory over the wallabies, their first at the world cup,

and blows pool c wide open. it hurts personally, yeah, ioo%. and, as i said, i*m ioo% responsible for it. you know, i*ve gone down the line of picking a young team and i want this young team to be a good team. we had a bad day today, which can happen, and we*ve got to be better next week, so that*s my responsibility. great britain will play either serbia or italy when the draw is made for the davis cup finals tomorrow. it was a thrilling finish to their tie against france in manchester. it was winner—takes—all and, at 1—1 after the singles, it went down to the deciding doubles. dan evans, who had won his singles rubber earlier in the day, partnered neal skupski against nicolas mahut and edouard roger—vasselin. though the british pair lost the first set 6—1, they dug deep and took the next two on tie breaks, saving four match points along the way.
1:38 pm
great britain will now head to malaga in november for the knockout stages. australia, defending champions canada, czech republic, finland and the netherlands complete next months the line—up. a set down, a few guys from the bench said, you know, get the crowd involved and it sort of turned into pandemonium for me and then... laughter. yeah, some embarrassing stuff most likely out there but we are going to malaga so it doesn*t matter. some big calls from england cricket as they prepare to defend the world cup in india next month. jason roy won*t be risked because of the back spasms that saw him miss the new zealand series, so harry brook gate—crashes the squad, although he has been rested for the one day—series against ireland that starts on wednesday. joe root will play, though. he*s asked to be included to try and and play himself into a bit of form. selector luke wright also confirmed
1:39 pm
to our cricket reporter stphan shemilt that fast bowler jofra archer will travel with the squad as he continues his recovery from an elbow injury. joffre archer will probably be the only one that travels with the team. a big part of it is to have the physios around him. we would love to have him back as soon as possible, but he still has this injury and we have got to do right by him. mas have got to do right by him. was jason pretty _ have got to do right by him. was jason pretty aggrieved by the news? obviously very disappointed. i*m sure he is hurt. but he also knows what professional sports is like. he has been around long enough that ensure he has had some disappointments in his career as well. we will rest harry. you only have to look at what he has had this summer, probably one of the busiest

summers out of everyone, from the ashes, the hundred, coming into this series. you need to think about how much batting someone needs as opposed to what a mental break someone needs, so he will rest during this series. joe root has been asked —— has asked to be involved in that first game. he will be at headingley. that is where we are at the moment with that ireland squad. burnley are looking for their first points of the season when they visit nottingham forest in the premier league tonight. they have lost three out of three so far, that*s as many defeats as the whole of last season when they won the championship. as for forest, their last match before the international break was a 1—0 win at chelsea it was a great result at stamford bridge and one that we really wanted and enjoyed when it came, but i

don*t really think it is at the forefront of our mind going into this game because of the break, because of the time. the squad has changed a little bit since then as well and we are very much about the present and the preparation looking forward to burnley. and the preparation looking forward to burnley. rory mcilroy says europe will head to the ryder cup next week buoyed by the performances of the team*s players at wentworth in the pga championship. seven of luke donald*s side finished in the top ten, including mcilroy and tyrell hatton, who finished tied for second, just one shot behind winner ryan fox from new zealand. the ryder cup gets under way in rome a week on friday i personally feel like i struggled a little bit since the us open, the gamejust hadn*t little bit since the us open, the game just hadn*t felt great, it was close last week in ireland. it was three bad holes in ireland. they do come this week and play like i did i*m pretty happy, so ijust need to

that*s bbc.co.uk/sport. from me and the rest of the team at the bbc sport centre, goodbye. you*re watching bbc news. i*m celia hatton. a woman who has accused british comedian and presenter russell brand of sexual misconduct has described his response to the allegations "insulting." mr brand posted a video denying any wrongdoing hours before allegations of rape and sexual assault were published by uk news outlets channel 4 and the times newspaper. he also accused the "mainstream media" of carrying out a co—ordinated attack on him. the woman, who we are calling alice, has spoken to women*s hour on radio 4. the presenter of that programme, emma barnett, spoke to my colleague lucy hockings. it*s her first interview since she*s spoken to the sunday times, of the uk, and talked about what happened in her relationship when she was 16 and the comedian was originally 30.
1:44 pm
i mean, he*s also a hollywood actor. people will know him around the world, and he*s cultivated many fans online. he*s strenuously denied all of these allegations. but she hasn*t spoken since the response of russell brand, where he has issued these denials. and also, she hasn*t spoken about the age that she was, really, in a bit more detail. i think she has reflected, as an older woman, on what she thought she was at 16 versus what she is. and here in the uk — it differs around the world — the age of consent, sexual consent, is 16. now, that was a rule that was made in the 1800s. and she is asking for there to be a review, at least, of that, and talking about how even her mother, who tried to stop this relationship, and this was now she views, a grooming situation. she views it — the law has changed since her relationship with russell brand — as an element of coercive control. she views it very, very differently, as well as the specific allegation of sexual assault.
1:45 pm
well, let*s have a listen to alice when you ask her if russell brand knew that she was 16 when he first asked her out. he knew before we ever went on our first date. so when we met initially and he took my number and asked me out on a date, he didn't... he hadn't asked me, but he didn't know. so i texted him prior to, because he said to me he knew that i was stalling on agreeing on a date with him. and he said, "why aren't you?" he said, "what's going on? like, why don't you want to go out with me?" i said, "because i've got something to tell you." i said, "i'm16." and he just replied saying, "ok, so we're still on fordinnerat 7:30." and how old was he? he was 30. what do you want to say about that now, as an older woman? what is... now that i'm in my 305, looking at ig—year—olds, i can't even imagine finding them sexually attractive. i can't imagine even thinking of them as that, you know, a potential mate in any way. it just seems the only feelings i have towards them are maternal, protective feelings.
