and conversations like this need to happen in order to make sure in all areas we're at the top of our game and the conversation was extremely positive and the players are very positive moving forward that the structures are now in place. it looks really good and that of course makes me really happy because it is good for the players and good for the women's game to move forward and take the next step, but also we can focus on football, which we did anyway in the world cup because it did not distract, but when you start playing football you don't want to have discussions at that moment. it is exactly what happened. the europa league group stages start on thursday, four british sides in that. rangers, west ham liverpool and brighton who are preparing for their first european campaign, it starts at home to greek side aek athens. we believe in ourselves.

on the bbc sport website but i will be back in the next hour. now it's back to lucy. who does the household chores in your house? well some new british research out today found that women are still doing more housework than men. our reporter nicky schiller is in the newsroom with more. for the past a0 years, the british social attitudes survey has been looking at our attitudes to household chores. it's things like who does the cleaning, who does the washing up, who makes the beds, who makes the evening meal? now, this year, a clear majority of people said that it should be equally divided between men and women. however, when it comes to the reality, it is a totally different situation. take a look at these graphs. the top line is who thinks that they should be shared equally? however, when it comes to actually doing the task, it is mainly women who are doing the household cleaning. it is mainly women who are making the evening meal.
2:50 pm
yep, you guessed it. it is mainly the women who are doing the washing and the ironing. however, the authors of the report say that attitudes have changed since the first one. nearly a half of us back in 1983 agreed with the proposition that it was a man's job to go out to work and a woman's job to stay at home and do the housework and look after the kids. it's now less than io%, although it has to be said, although we now say therefore, men and woman should be sharing their household tasks equally, when it comes to practice, we're still not quite so good at it. still tends to be the men that do the repairs and the women that do the washing and the ironing. it's worth saying that ideas on gender roles have changed significantly since the mid 1980s. now the survey has always posed this question. a man'sjob is to earn money, and a woman'sjob is to look after the home and family. now, back in 1987, 48% of people

agreed with that statement. it has dropped to 9% in this year's survey. in 2010, roger ross williams made history by becoming the first african american director to win an oscar — the accolade — for a short documentary — came after a lot of. but now he's reached another career milestone — he's made his first feature film. it is called cassandro — he has two other movies coming out this month — tom brook reports from new york. roger ross williams is a film maker whose time appears to have come. he made his name as an award winning director of documentaries. the just released cassandra, starring top mexican actor gael garcia bernal, marked his debut as a feature filmmaker. it's based on the true story of this man, a gay wrestler from el paso, who confronted homophobia and machismo in the mexican wrestling circuit to emerge a true hero. i was so, so inspired by the real life cassandro. ijust was blown away by not

only his energy, his charisma, his powerful, positive story, though we need more positive stories about people in the lgbtq+ community. roger ross williams has long been moved by individuals not in the mainstream who triumph. his 2009 short film, music by prudence, the story of a young zimbabwean singer songwriter who prevailed despite her disabilities, brought him an academy award, making him the first african—american director to win an oscar. the doctor says, let me explain what autism is. he was also 0scar nominated in 2017 for life, animated a film looking at a young man with autism who finds a connection through disney animation. and he made an impact with his documentary god loves uganda, examining the role of american anti—gay evangelists in uganda. roger ross williams clearly likes to make thought provoking movies and challenge people's assumptions. he's becoming a widely respected, impassioned storyteller. but how much difference do his films really make? is he reallyjust preaching to the converted?
2:53 pm
his collaborators think that cassandro, with its compelling star gael garcia bernal, and story of gay underdog triumph, will reach a wide audience. i do feel that cassandro has a cross—over quality that can come to people that would otherwise maybe not see the story, just the way gael gives us this performance and can hopefully warm the hearts of many. for the film—maker, he definitely wants people to identify with the gay mexican wrestler at the heart of the story. he made it on his own terms as an out of feminine gay man and the macho world of wrestling, and that he did it as he is. so at this film, the message is, you know, be yourself, love yourself, be who you are, and you will succeed in life.

and also, i have this theme in all my films of the outsider. you know, i'm all about like telling these powerful tales of outsiders who've overcome adversity and to great success. and what about your own story, your own background? i mean, you're african american and you're gay. do you think that puts you in a good position to tell certain kinds of stories with empathy? i mean, you can't get any more outsider than me, african american, gay. i mean, i'm the ultimate outsider. and i've struggled. i struggled in my career and my life. and i've overcome all these obstacles and look at me. i'm now standing here on the red carpet talking to you. so i'm a testament to it all. it wasn't about the fashion. it was about the women. these are good times for roger ross williams with two other films arriving this month, the supermodels, looking at the rise of four top models in the 1980s and 1990s and stamped from the beginning examining the origins of racism in america. that's in addition to a documentary he co—directed on donna summer out earlier this year. williams is living proof that vibrant films are now reaching audiences from talented directors who not so long ago had to really

struggle to win acceptance in the industry and get backing for their work. tom brook, bbc news, new york. good to have you with us on bbc news. good afternoon. a little less windy for the majority today, but on the whole, the weather still rather unsettled. we've got further showers to come — in fact, we've already had rumbles of thunder and flashes of lightning. this, of course, the overnight rain across southern and eastern areas — that gave a good 30 to a0 millimetres for most. more rain today for the north, and these lumps of cloud are those intense showers that have been pushing their way or developing further north and east with time. they won't be for all, but when they do occur, there will be some lively downpours, as i've already mentioned. a wetter afternoon, as well, across northern ireland into the evening rush, for southern parts of scotland, and some showers developing

towards the late evening across southern and eastern areas. and it is a fresher—feeling day out there, but still 18s in southern and eastern areas. as i mentioned, though, some heavier showers potentially pushing back into eastern parts of england. the rain further north pushing southwards and fragmenting. but the big talking point about tonight is it will feel fresher — notably so across southern and eastern areas. quite a chilly start to our friday morning. and that chill accentuated by this brisk northerly wind, or northwesterly, blowing across scotland, northern ireland and down across england and wales — particularly around the irish sea coast, pushing those showers southward. so it's another day of sunny spells and scattered heavy showers. as i say, that wind coming down from the north or northwest a fairly brisk affair which will make it feel a little cooler still — cooler than the 15 to 18 would suggest in the south. but with some shelter from that breeze, with some sunshine, still a very pleasant 15 to 18 for almost late september. then, as we head through friday night into saturday, there's a brief ridge of high pressure before the atlantic weather systems return.
2:57 pm
that means it will be a chilly start on saturday morning — could be close to freezing in the glens of scotland. one or two patches of mist but i think for the most part, a decent day. the cloud does tend to pile in through the day and you can see for northern ireland it turns wetter towards the evening. but actually with the lighter winds further east, and some sunshine, 15 or 16 feeling quite pleasant. but as we go into sunday, our next atlantic low rolls in — in here, some tropical moisture from the remains of hurricane nigel, which means, again, there could be some really quite wet weather — particularly in the west and the north — and some strong winds, but with it some warmer air, as well. but it's a generally unsettled picture into next week, as well. there's more online.
