hello, i'm lucy grey, welcome to verified live, three hours of breaking stories, and checking out the truth behind them. let's go to france to look at those pictures of king charles who is on the last day of his visit to france, he is in bordeaux at the moment, and he is in bordeaux at the moment, and he hasjust arrived he is in bordeaux at the moment, and he has just arrived at a forest. and this is a particularly interesting forest because it is where they are learning about the impact of climate change on trees so he has had a very busy day there today in bordeaux, i think it is one of his fourth engagements of the day. after this, he is then going to go on to a vineyard which is totally sustainable, it has horse—drawn carriages, it does all sorts of things to look after the planet,
3:01 pm
fully organic, it produces solar energy and develops carbon capture so of course this is an issue very close to the heart of king charles, he has been pursuing pushing these ideas for decades, of course, so today has been very much about looking after the planet and this was it in bordeaux, all about seeing the area where they are focusing on this the most, this forest where he's at now he has just arrived and then later on going on a sustainable vineyard. he got the try a little earlier, all part of the green agenda, and before that he was at the town hall. —— he got the try a little earlier. he met that the —— mayor of bordeaux and the mayor of bristol was there as well, as the two towns are twinned. queen camilla is visiting a charity, a local charity there in bordeaux while king

going back to these images because he is doing quite a lot inning next hour or so. at the moment, he is there in the forest and later we willjoin them as they move their visit to a vineyard, sustainable vineyard in bordeaux. and also it is a busy day in france, actually, because the pope is also visiting france today. he is visiting the port city of marseille. i think that maybe his plane arriving just now. we will be keeping our eyes on france a lot throughout the next few hours as the pope and king charles are both their visiting, king charles on his last day of his visit, and the pope starting his two—day visit. so, there you are, thatis two—day visit. so, there you are, that is the plane coming into land in marseille as pope francis starts his two—day visit, and we will be back with king charles and his visit to a vineyard and little later on. the focus of the pope's visit is all
3:04 pm
about migration. marseille is a port city, of course, and has a lot of people arriving there who get processed from marseille. there have been thousands of people arriving on the italian island of lampedusa in recent days so it comes while this issueis recent days so it comes while this issue is of course top of the agenda, a very political issue but an issue very close to the pope's heart. he is going to be getting a welcome ceremony and holding prayers for migrants a little later on, that is going to be at the notre dame basilica. the two—day visit on the mediterranean and migration, focusing on the mediterranean. he gives a message of tolerance. i think we are also, we are not seeing the popejust yet think we are also, we are not seeing the pope just yet so we may go back to the other big event in france today, there is king charles at this
3:05 pm
forest that he is visiting in bordeaux. we will be coming back to these images, it will be going on for quite awhile. and we have, actually, president zelensky as well, we can show you images of this, there is a lot going on, president zelensky is in canada today, he is going to be addressing parliament there, he has been meeting prime minister trudeau. we will be keeping across the two major visits in france, of the pope who has just landed, visits in france, of the pope who hasjust landed, his plane hasjust landed in marseille, talk about migration and the issues of the mediterranean and the migration bear and how europe handles migration and also what is going on in france, any other part of france, in bordeaux, as the king finishes his visit there, king charles and camilla of course who have been there getting a very warm welcome. let's turn our

attention to ukraine. they have successfully hit the headquarters of russia's black sea navalfleet successfully hit the headquarters of russia's black sea naval fleet in crimea. russia says one serviceman is missing after the attack. the local governor warned residents in the city of sevaastopol that another attack was possible and urged them to avoid the city centre and stay indoors. these pictures were posted on social media — showing plumes of smoke rising from the building. ukraine has carried out several attacks on crimea this month, destroying a russian air defence system and damaging a ship and submarine. russia seized and annexed the peninsula from ukraine in 2014. it seems like certainly, if we go under very tight footage, it appears that russia's black sea naval headquarters in sevastopol has been directly hit. now, if we go on what the moscow officials are saying, they blamed falling debris but the

images suggest that this is a direct hit. we don't know the further implications, in terms of who was in there, but this is a place where russia has really asserted its dominance. it is a black sea —— black sea fleet from where it has launched missile strikes on ukraine, it has blockaded ports. this is a place that russia annexed back in 2015. it is almost a cornerstone of russia's invasion and regardless of whether kyiv claims was positive for this one, it did last week when hit a dry dock with british missiles destroying a submachine and warship, it is clear that ukraine is continuing with its strategy of trying to target sites in crimea, to both undermine russia's occupation and also to support its continued counteroffensive further north by frustrating russian operations. meanwhile, president zelensky is in canada, for the first time since russia's invasion, on a visit to thank canadians for their support.
3:08 pm
he arrived on thursay night alongside his wife 0lena — and he's due to address the canadian parliament later this afternoon. the visit comes fresh off the back of a trip to washington. president biden has approved security assistance for kyiv valued at $325 million which includes upgrades to air defences, but not the long—range missiles president zelensky has been requesting. live now to jane boulden from canada's royal military college and queen's university. hello to you. this visit to canada, as ijust mentioned, is fresh off the back of the visit to the us, it is more of a thank you visit, really, than anything else? yes, i think that is _ really, than anything else? yes, i think that is the _ really, than anything else? yes, i think that is the main _ really, than anything else? yes, i think that is the main purpose - really, than anything else? yes, i think that is the main purpose of| think that is the main purpose of the visit. canada has been deeply

supportive of ukraine from the very beginning. canada has the largest ukrainian population outside of ukraine and russia, and so there is a good core of both support and of core group, if you like, of ukrainians that have been deeply supportive all the way along and zelensky is here to express his gratitude for that. i zelensky is here to express his gratitude for that.— zelensky is here to express his gratitude for that. i think we have a a-rahic, gratitude for that. i think we have a graphic. we _ gratitude for that. i think we have a graphic. we can _ gratitude for that. i think we have a graphic, we can show— gratitude for that. i think we have a graphic, we can show how - gratitude for that. i think we have j a graphic, we can show how much gratitude for that. i think we have i a graphic, we can show how much in terms of the contributions of various countries gave, where canada is on that scale. we've got us right at the top, $46 billion, germany's next, uk and canada a few further down, 1.8 billion. just talking about, in terms of what canada has given so far and what president zelensky is looking for, he wants those long—range missiles, doesn't he? and i suppose that is not what canada is able to offer, is it? that is riaht, canada is able to offer, is it? that is right, canada's _ canada is able to offer, is it? twat is right, canada's ability to offer military support is limited in the

indicated, this past month, ukraine has been working hard at targeting crimea. it gives it a capacity to reach beyond the front lines that go along with the contested area on the east and north in ukraine, and that is very important at being able to strike directly at russia and not just to be working on the front lines in the trenches, if you like. so, the actual impact is hard to access —— to assess but the symbolic impact is large. n access -- to assess but the symbolic impact is large-— impact is large. i suppose as retards impact is large. i suppose as regards how _ impact is large. i suppose as regards how it _ impact is large. i suppose as regards how it helps - impact is large. i suppose as regards how it helps the - impact is large. i suppose as - regards how it helps the military offensive, it probably helps his charm offensive as well, this quest for arms around the world, in terms of saying, look, we are nearly capable of doing this and spinning things along a bit.— things along a bit. exactly right, and i things along a bit. exactly right, and i imagine — things along a bit. exactly right, and i imagine the _ things along a bit. exactly right, and i imagine the timing - things along a bit. exactly right, and i imagine the timing is - things along a bit. exactly right, and i imagine the timing is no i and i imagine the timing is no accident, in that this is happening while zelensky is making the rounds,

trying to shore up political support in countries like the us and canada. the ability to point to this kind of action will help him considerably. because it is that kind of long—range system in addition to things like air defences that he really needs, and he is fighting against stance particularly in the us, but notjust in the us, that the war has told and that there is not likely to be a breakthrough soon. ht likely to be a breakthrough soon. it is also went out coming, which as we know really affects the fighting and their capabilities. ht know really affects the fighting and their capabilities.— their capabilities. it does significantly _ their capabilities. it does significantly affect - their capabilities. it does significantly affect that, l their capabilities. it does i significantly affect that, and their capabilities. it does - significantly affect that, and it is not that far off, and one of the things that happened last winter was that it gave both sides but russia seems to have been in a more the beneficiary of the time to reassure come every set at eight there troops, gather more defences, and be

3:14 pm
are in france at the moment, they are in france at the moment, they are visiting a vineyard little a later on. the pope isjust arriving. i think we might see —— stick with these pictures because we might see him emerging from the plane very shortly. he is starting two days of a visit to france. he has made it very clear that he is visiting the french port city rather than france as a whole because he really was to talk about migration and the situation, in terms of migration, in the mediterranean, and he is bringing a message of tolerance and that this bitter debate there is about how europe manages asylum seekers. we've got a dual view of france there, marseille on one side and bordeaux on the other because there is king charles and the camera people following him there as he visits a forest which is all focusing on climate change and the effect on trees on climate change so it is an experimental research venue
3:15 pm
that he is visiting as we know this is an issue very close to king charles is heart, he has been talk about this for many decades now. trees obviously a massive part of that. we can see the steps going up to the plane where pope francis is expected to emerge to start the visit to focus on migration and the mediterranean. he will be holding a prayer at the notre dame della guard silica a little later on and that is in an hour's time, and he will be having a welcome ceremony and those prayers for migrants there. —— the notre dame basilica. he is talking about it being a symbolic. local clergy will be this afternoon. a beautiful day in marseille, he will beautiful day in marseille, he will be following that prayer with a
3:16 pm
moment of meditation with representatives of other religions in front of a memorial to sailors and migrants lost at sea. he is also going to be meeting mediterranean area catholic bishops and young people. marseille is of course a gateway for immigrants and also home to some of the poorest neighbourhoods in europe. there will be many dignitaries and members of the church waiting there for his arrival. and the french prime minister is somewhere in the crowd there, waiting to welcome him. she will be there greeting him as the pope arrives. we are hoping —— the visit will be focusing a lot on migration and the way that europe handles it. on saturday morning, he will be taking part in the closing session of these mediterranean meetings event that it is called, as
3:17 pm
well as migration, it will be covering issues such as economic inequality and climate change, and also things close to the pope's heart. thousands of pilgrims are respected for this visit, although there has been a decline of dick —— catholicism in france in recent years but still tens of thousands of people are expected to line the streets are come and focus on the areas where he's going to be in marseille, this french port city, 30 days he is visiting for two days. —— for two days, he is visiting for two days. he is going to hold a prayer with the local clergy on friday afternoon. that will be followed by afternoon. that will be followed by a moment of meditation with representatives of other religions, thatis representatives of other religions, that is going to be in front of a memorial to sailors and migrants lost at sea. the un estimates that more than 28,000 migrants who tried
3:18 pm
to cross the mediterranean have gone missing since 2014. so come on saturday, tomorrow, the pope is going to be taking part in the closing session of those mediterranean area event, covering economic inequality and climate change as well. he will be meeting some catholic bishops today and also young people from the area. just waiting now to see many people emerging from the plane there, i expect there are a lot of journalists on board as well, they often get to travel with the pope when he flies along these visits. here we go, members of the catholic church going up to greet the pope, and somewhere i think town on the tarmac is the prime minister who will also be welcoming him as he is there in marseille airport. also the
3:19 pm
other big visit we are focusing on in france is king charles and camilla who are finishing off their final day of visit to france where they have had a very warm welcome from the president and from the politicians yesterday when king charles addressed the parliament and he is today doing his final stops before he leaves. he is visiting places that represent the issues close to his heart so he is currently visiting a forest where they are focusing on the impact of climate change on trees, it is called an experimental forest. the queen is visiting a local charity and they will meet up later when they go to a vineyard to talk about sustainability in wine making comments that very special vineyard which has horse—drawn vehicles, there is the king there in the forest, he is still in amongst the trees, probably where he is happiest, and this vineyard develops
3:20 pm
its own carbon capture so he is studying the growth of trees at the moment and the impact on this forest —— on foresters,. it has been a very busy day, actually, for king charles, he has been to a big fiesta in the centre of bordeaux, he met the mayor of bordeaux and also the mayor of bristol because the city of bristol in england is twinned with bordeaux, it has been since 1947, it was the first uk france twinning of its kind, actually. and they actually signed, they observed that recently signed a memorandum of understanding between the two cities celebrate in the uk's oldest twin city relationships, looking to further cooperation in areas including sustainability, use and cultural exchanges and business growth. they also then went to the town hall and outside the town hall
3:21 pm
they viewed an exhibition featuring photos from the king's visit to bordeaux the last time he was there, backin bordeaux the last time he was there, back in 1977, that was as well as queen elizabeth ii's visit to bordeaux during the state visit to france in 1992. let's focus in on marseille for a moment, i think that prime minister walking up the red carpet, there she is greeting some children who are there, too of course welcome pope francis when he comes down those steps, i do wonder when that is going to happen, but we are waiting to see him emerge at any moment. he was in a wheelchair when he boarded the plane. we are waiting to see when the pope is going to emerge from his plane, this big visit that he is holding, a two—day visit that he is holding, a two—day visit to marseille, a port city, talking about the mediterranean and migration, wanted to focus minds on
3:22 pm
how europe manages the number of migrants arriving on its shores. beautiful day there in marseille. he is bringing what he says is a message of tolerance and that what can be a bitter debate. a bitter debate on this contemptuous issue. that you are, members of the catholic church emerging down the plane. i expect they will come and meet the french prime minister as well. children waiting to greet him as well. more people emerging from the pope's fright. —— flight. first he will head to the basilica of notre dame. he will hold a prayer with a

local clergy and that will then be followed by a moment of meditation with representatives of other religions, that is going to be in front of a memorial to sailors and migrants lost at sea. there will be a prayerfor migrants and migrants lost at sea. there will be a prayer for migrants and tomorrow, saturday morning, the pope will take part in the closing ceremony of the mediterranean meetings event, it covers of issues like economic inequality and climate change which are also issues that the pope holds dear, close to his heart. thousands of people expected to turn out. in recent years there has been a
3:24 pm
decline in catholicism there in france. we have been hearing recent thousands of migrants arriving on the island of lampedusa in italy which had been in the headlines a lot, so his visit comes at an opportune time for people talking about this issue. and as i said, he is hoping to bring a message of tolerance. he becomes the first pope in 500 years to visit the city of marseille which as i say is a gateway for migrants, and also it is home to some of the poorest neighbourhoods in europe. so, the city has been decked out in yellow and white colours of the vatican today, particularly the name —— main avenue where the pope will travel to in his pope pmobile tomorrow, so the city has already got the bunting and the colours out for him. and the
3:25 pm
pope's plane landed in the half hour or so. many people are arriving off the plane, officials and members of the plane, officials and members of the catholic church have been in to visit him and we have seen lots of journalists coming down the steps as well. elisabeth borne, the french prime minister there waiting to visit him, to welcome him to this visit, for two days he is going to be there. and there he is emerging around the back of the plane, there we are, we can see him coming around the side of the plane. elisabeth borne, the french prime minister, waiting to greet him, squinting and sunlight but smiling as he arrives, shaking hands with a french prime minister. they smile smiles all around. and a very warm welcome. as
3:26 pm
i say, he is now going to head off to the notre—dame de la garde basilica and he is expected —— they are excitedly thousands of people there to welcome him. he will be holding a prayer with a local clergy this afternoon and he will hold a moment of meditation with representatives of other religions, other religions in front of a memorial to sailors and migrants lost at sea. some staggering figures that ijust mentioned met the un estimate that more than 28,000 migrants who tried to cross the mediterranean have gone missing since 2014, 28,000. after that, tomorrow morning, as we say, there is going to be a procession through the streets of the main avenue do prado which has already got the yellow and white colours of the vatican, he will be on his pope mobile for that, that is when many people are expected there to welcome
3:27 pm
him, and he will be visiting the closing session of the mediterranean meetings, which covers the issue of migration and economic inequality and climate change. i think we can have a little listen in, shall we? i think we can hear what they are saying. just a little bit there, i thought we were going to be able to listen in but perhaps not. he is being escorted by the french prime minister along the red carpet into the airport where he will then be taken off to the basilica to hold those prayers. his visit very much focusing on migrants and the number of asylum seekers arriving on the shores, on european shores, crossing the mediterranean, calling for tolerance for those who are deciding policy around migration. it is obviously a very contentious issue in europe, it causes a lot of debate
3:28 pm
in europe, it causes a lot of debate in parliament across europe so he is calling for, on this visit he wants to talk about a message of tolerance. music plays. music plays. to tope their standing up as the band play their welcoming music for them are bowing his head to them, may be a moment of prayer. there is lots going on, we are covering this

3:30 pm
war began to canada. this feels like visiting an ally to thank him for everything. there's quite a large community of ukrainians living in canada. we have lost the feeds are to that, but as i say, a lot going on, so we can show you more of the pope's visit to france. this is the welcome he is receiving at the airport in marseille. the reason he has chosen it as a visit is to talk about migrants and the way migrants are treated as they arrive in europe. let's listen then. music plays
