12:17 pm
into the injuries suffered. it was on board? we know it was schoolchildren that would have been on board, teachers of course, the driver as well. at this stage, we do not know who has been injured, or how many injuries they are likely to be. that is all being looked at at alder hey children's hospital in liverpool. as you can see, the road and bridges around here remain closed for the time being. $5 and bridges around here remain closed for the time being. as you sa , the closed for the time being. as you say. the rates — closed for the time being. as you say, the rates remain _ closed for the time being. as you say, the rates remain close, - closed for the time being. as you say, the rates remain close, this| say, the rates remain close, this must be causing a lot of issues around the area. around merseyside. is there any direction for people living in the local area? why should they be doing?— they be doing? obviously, this motorway. _ they be doing? obviously, this motorway. the _ they be doing? obviously, this motorway, the m _ they be doing? obviously, this motorway, the m 53, - they be doing? obviously, this motorway, the m 53, it - they be doing? obviously, this motorway, the m 53, it is - they be doing? obviously, this motorway, the m 53, it is one | they be doing? obviously, this i motorway, the m 53, it is one of they be doing? obviously, this - motorway, the m 53, it is one of the main motorways in this part of the uk. it is not one of the major ones, the disruption to a certain extent can be kept to a minimum. that section of the motorway remains closed, there are diversions in place. i took one of those diversions and come adjusting come
12:18 pm
this way close to the bridge, just as few hundred yards from the scene. as investigations are taking place, as they are trying to work out what happened here, how this tragic accident happened here this morning, those rates will remain closed. that will cause disruption for a number of people who live locally who, perhaps, you can understand will feel that that is necessary. if the police need to be what they need to do, they need to work out how this tragic accident occurred this morning, and they will cooperate along with many other people i would say, including drivers who may have witnessed this tragic accident this morning. they too will be trying to help if they can. of course, police want that. they want any dash cam footage that may be available. irate footage that may be available. we will be speaking timor throughout the day. ijust want will be speaking timor throughout the day. i just want to will be speaking timor throughout the day. ijust want to give you an update from alder hey children's hospital where some of the people

of their vehicles to because of the scale of this incident and what they felt they had to do at the time. this was around eight o'clock this morning. we understand that the school bus had a number of children on board. children from west kirby grammar school and also calday grange grammar school. they are also from west kirby in merseyside in the north—west of england. those schools have confirmed that their pupils were on board that bus. we have been told that there is one person who has been taken to hospital with serious injuries. those were trauma —related injuries. we have heard from alder hey children's hospital that they are treating a number of these people on board, around 50, we are told. we are talking about children, their teachers with them presumably, and may be teaching assistants, we don't know. also, the
12:23 pm
driver. we do not know who suffered injuries. clearly, the parents of those children will be extremely concerned and worried about what has taken place here. that is why we have got this huge operation, this investigation. this happened at around eight o'clock this morning according to merseyside police, who confirmed this was when they send those emergency vehicles. at that time, on the m 53, betweenjunctions four and five, it would have been quite busy. a number of vehicles around at the time. some have in fact taken images and put those on social media. police want to hear from any dash cam footage holders, that will allow them to piece together how the school bus ended up on its side, going into the reservation and causing these injuries. the investigation of course is also trying to support the families of those involved, both families of those involved, both families of those involved, both families of the children involved. we have heard concerns from other

12:25 pm
hospital if they can to delay their journey, unless it is of course urgent and they need immediate treatment. they are asking people who may have come down here because they cannot get an appointment elsewhere, for instance, not to come down at the moment. to try to leave the hospital as clear as possible so that they can treat the injured here. they are not expecting any more patients, i understand, this is, in effect, the third hospital out in terms of escalating rings and from where the crash happened. the crash happened in wirral, the nearest hospital to that is arrow park, then the next nearest is at the royal liverpool hospital, which is under the tunnel and in the liveable city. this is further out from liverpool city centre, around four miles from liverpool city centre. but, it is a specialist children's hospital. they have staff here who could treat children better than almost anywhere else in the
12:26 pm
world. they have been brought here for that treatment. the hospital says: we can confirm we are treating a number of patients. we will continue to liaise and support with families of those who have been injured, but are unable to share any more details at the moment. the hospital says that it will continue to treat people for as long as possible. and as long as is needed. we know that nhs workers were striking in other hospitals. they have been brought in voluntarily, ending the strike, going into work. by ending the strike, going into work. by the time that we arrived here this morning, there were no... there was nothing going on in terms of ticket action outside. there is no strike action here. we do not know if those doctors have gone in or if there wasn't strike action affecting mass hospital at all. we know that the hospital is treating patients as quickly as they possibly can and that they are not giving out any details about the numbers involved.

12:29 pm
injuries are involved. currently, aside from the helicopter which you may be able to hear, we have a number of vehicles on the motorway. police vehicles, emergency vehicles, they are all trying to work out what has taken place. we can potentially find out more from merseyside police later this afternoon. their focus will be on trying to hear from any witnesses, anyone who may have any footage of any kind, dash cam footage, people may have been driving past at the time. a number of people on that bus, around 50, including children from two schools including children from two schools in west kirby, calday grange grammar school and west kirby grammar school. we do not yet know what has happened to those children. we do of course understand that a number of people were injured, and they are being treated at alder hey hospital. we have tweets from a number of politicians offering their support.
12:30 pm
people will be getting involved in trying to support the families of those children who will clearly be in shock, having witnessed an accident of this kind on the motorway, so they of course will be comforted, spoken to, councils, if thatis comforted, spoken to, councils, if that is necessary. and, of course, the police themselves will be trying to piece together what happened and what is currently happening. in terms of this area, that section of the motorway, just a few hundred yards behind me, remains close off and is likely to remain so while this investigation is carried out. it is only a few yards of medway. the bridge overlooking the scene behind me has been cordoned off by police. there are diversions in place, of course, there is likely to be disruption. as far as the treatment of those injuries is concerned at alder hey, the hospital has had that an emergency department is very busy as you would expect at this time. there will send out message is: only, in if absolutely
