the israeli prime minister is warning of a long and difficult war. diplomatic efforts to stabilise what is the largest escalation in this conflict for decades won't be easy. simon jones, bbc news. let's bring you some new pictures we have just received. footage of an israeli missile which hit a residential neighbourhood in north—west gaza. you can see people fleeing and running for cover as the missile this area. israeli forces called on palestinians to evacuate areas of the gaza strip, as speculation of a possible ground invasion mounts. military say residents in towns near the gaza border will be evacuated in the next 24 border will be evacuated in the next 2a hours. let's go live to our reporter in gaza, rushdi abualouf. thanks very much forjoining us. i want to ask you about the thing we

just mentioned there, which is that israel says residents near gaza will be evacuated in the next 2a hours. where will they be evacuated to and how well the process work? == where will they be evacuated to and how well the process work?- how well the process work? -- will the process — how well the process work? -- will the process work? _ how well the process work? -- will the process work? they _ how well the process work? -- will the process work? they are - how well the process work? -- will the process work? they are talking about israeli communities within the border with gaza, they will be evacuated to cities inside israel. but what we have been told just now by people in neighbourhoods, a specific neighbourhood in gaza city, they have received text messages on their phones by idf asking them to leave immediately for the city centre or taking shelter. as we know, gaza don't have shelters. we started to get reports of families leaving one of the neighbourhoods in gaza where we believe about 10,000-15,000 gaza where we believe about 10,000—15,000 people live there.
12:08 pm
according to un labour spokesman, he told the bbc in the last hour or so that about 21,000 people already take shelter in the un schools in gaza. —— according to the un spokesman. people in northern gaza and the south, they asked them to leave some specific areas. they draw a map for the people, they show them exactly where the area israel's going to target, and they asked them to leave to areas more secure, they asked them to go to the city centre or take shelter. it's not clear whether this is the warning issued by israel which means israel will attack by air these areas or we can see ground operation in this area. talking about this specific neighbourhood, it's in gaza city, it's about six kilometres from the border, and they ask the people to
12:09 pm
leave. so most likely they are going to intensify the air attacks in that area. the palestinian security sources said over 200 targets were hit for the hamas militant group in gaza, including banks, military compounds and some of the hamas leaders' houses. just compounds and some of the hamas leaders' houses.— leaders' houses. just to be clear, because it _ leaders' houses. just to be clear, because it is _ leaders' houses. just to be clear, because it is a _ leaders' houses. just to be clear, because it is a bit _ leaders' houses. just to be clear, because it is a bit confusing, - leaders' houses. just to be clear, because it is a bit confusing, this| because it is a bit confusing, this evacuation order is for israelis or also palestinians? it’s evacuation order is for israelis or also palestinians?— also palestinians? it's both. i think the _ also palestinians? it's both. i think the israelis _ also palestinians? it's both. i think the israelis are - also palestinians? it's both. i think the israelis are trying . also palestinians? it's both. i| think the israelis are trying to evacuate people who live in the communities near gaza because of the fighting with those hamas fighters infiltrated inside, so they want to evacuate the people there just to make sure they are safe. i'm talking about the gaza side of the story. israel also warned gazans to leave

certain areas where they will intensify. half an hour ago, certain areas where they will intensify. halfan hourago, idf certain areas where they will intensify. half an hour ago, idf put a short 32nd video with an israeli officer talking in arabic, telling people to leave their place to the city centre. he didn't specify about installations of hamas to attack in that place. we saw the same warning and messages, even text messages, sent to people in beit hanoun, in rafah, khan younis, and israel carried out 200 air strikes. i talked to people who received messages, they live quite far from the border, so it is most likely going to be intensifying the air raid attacks, not a ground operation, not a ground invasion. because still people in the border haven't seen any sort of possible
12:11 pm
israeli ground operation as of now. have we heard any more statements on hamas this morning? —— from hamas this morning? apologies... we seem to have lost rushdi in gaza, we will get back to him when we can. live now to ourjerusalem bureau chief, jo floto. what is the latest you can give us on this story? the what is the latest you can give us on this story?— on this story? the fighting is still continuin: on this story? the fighting is still continuing in _ on this story? the fighting is still continuing in those _ on this story? the fighting is still continuing in those towns, - on this story? the fighting is still. continuing in those towns, villages and fields near the gaza strip on the israeli side. we arejust receiving pictures of a major road near ashkelon, a large city in the south of israel. a firefight with dozens of israeli soldiers shooting

across the carriageway, making their way in between cars. people leaving those cars to take shelter on the side of the embankment. they appear to be chasing, firing against militants who remain at large in the area. this morning, these israeli military told us they were still sweeping through eight towns and villages now 30 hours into the massive infiltration by militants into the area. we are also seeing the aftermath of that attack is very much in evidence. a closed military zone, but we are also seeing pictures of bodies lying in the street, barely covered up. civilians who have obviously been dragged out of their cars or tried to flee in their cars and shot on the road. that is, in essence, the story of this infiltration for the israeli public. because of that, the israeli military are now evacuating all
12:13 pm
those communities close to the gaza strip. thousands of people taken to different locations, partly to enable them to thoroughly sweep the area and make sure there are no militants at large. also in preparation for what comes next. and make no mistake, there will be a second phase to this. they have called up thousands of reservists and they say they are mobilizing dozens of battalions and a couple of divisions just around the gaza strip and to give them options to do the next phase of this operation. it's already been very bloody indeed. 300 already been very bloody indeed. 300 already killed in gaza. the death toll in israel has now risen to 350. we understand there are dozens of hostages that have been taken into gaza, being held. some of them are dead, but some of them are no doubt alive. we have seen social media footage, film on phones, of those hostages being taken out of their homes in israel and paraded in

12:15 pm
in israel is focused on those hostages. the prime minister has warned hamas not to harm them, but he is also said, as your audience has already heard, that he wants to smash hamas and he will go after every place where they are hiding, every place where they are hiding, every facility associated with hamas. and those two things may not be compatible. jo. hamas. and those two things may not be compatible-— be compatible. jo, you have covering this conflict — be compatible. jo, you have covering this conflict for _ be compatible. jo, you have covering this conflict for many _ be compatible. jo, you have covering this conflict for many years, - be compatible. jo, you have covering this conflict for many years, 15 - this conflict for many years, 15 years ago back injerusalem. people use the word unprecedented when they are describing this weekend's events. what is your take on it? look, you have to go back more than 50 years to get this level of casualties in one day. this is already, on the israeli side, twice the casualties incurred during the whole of the 2006 israel lebanon war. you have to go back to the yom kippur war of 1973 before you get anything close. and you have to go
12:16 pm
probably back to 19118, the war about the foundation of the state of israel, to see this level of civilian casualties, to have done men marauding through civilian populations in israel. —— to have done men marauding through. the sense of shock is palpable. the sense of shock is palpable. the sense of shock is palpable. the sense of outrage is going to propel political and military decisions. as we —— as we have seen, that doesn't bode well for the civilian population in gaza, but we have to be frank, at the moment there is little sympathy in israel given what they have seen unfold on social media and in their civilian populations. they have seen children, old women, otherfamilies carted off into gaza and now being held hostage. that is the focus for most people in israel at the moment. so we do expect this to intensify. jo, thank you forjoining us on bbc news. now an update that has just

come into the newsroom. france has suspended its flight to tel aviv. that follows saturday's attack. the quote here, air france has suspended flights for the time being. the french prime minister has told a tv channel about that, according to the detail i have here. making news that air france has suspended flights to tel aviv for the moment. —— breaking news. now let me show you a map of where what israel calls "points of engagement" are continuing with hamas militants inside its territory. there are eight locations — highlighted by red points on the map. the israel defense forces say operations are taking place in communities including sufa, zikim and sderot. a spokesman says hundreds of palestinian gunmen have been killed in with fighting, with dozens taken prisoner.

he says fighting is ongoing to rescue hostages held by hamas militants: translation: we are searching l in a large number of communities. the idf is on the ground with special forces. there is no community without idf presence. our mission within the next few days is to evacuate all citizens from the area bordering the gaza strip. the atrocious acts of hamas are a war crime, the holding of women and children by the enemy is contrary to international war and to islam, and anyone taking part in this will be held accountable. pope francis has called for an end to the attacks in israel and gaza. speaking in is weekly address to the crowds in st peter's square, he said that terrorism and war would not solve any problems, but only bring further suffering and death to innocent people. he said he was following events
12:19 pm
with apprehension and sorrow. as we've been reporting, there's been fighting in israeli villages which were overrun by hamas militants breaking out from gaza. here's the story of one woman who was at a festival when it happened. they were just next to us, they were all over the place with automatic weapons. so i was staying, then i was running out. i saw two policemen at the festival so we had policemen in the festival, they were standing next to the cars, starting to shoot but i realised it is very easy to get killed by our — by this policeman, because everyone was going everywhere. the terrorists were coming from four or five places, not like one direction, so we did not know where to go here so then i got into my car again, i drove a little bit more, i got some people shooting on me, i left the car and i started to run. i saw a place with many pummelo
12:20 pm
trees, many pummelo trees, like it was 200 trees, 0k? so i was going in the middle, just in the middle, and i was lying on the floor, it was the second hidden that i find and they were just all around me. they were going tree by tree and shooting, pa—pow, pa—pow, pa—pow, everywhere, from two sides and i saw many people, people were dying all around. i was very quiet, i was like, i did not cry, i did not do anything but i was, in one hand, i said, "ok, i'm going to die, it's ok, just breathe and close your eyes," because it was shooting everywhere, very close to me. also, then i heard the terrorist, i heard them, they opened a big van, they were all where i was being hiding. they opened a big van and all the time they got more weapons from this car.
12:21 pm
they were in the area for three hours, no—one was there, no—one. the policeman from the party, yes, i saw, but they were on one side, the other side, i was sure the army will come, i heard some helicopters, i was sure soldiers will come down and go into this field and save us but no—one was there. just all these terrorists. and yes, so they were very close to me, so my leg was starting to... i didn't control myself, my leg was like this, i tried, i did my best, i moved a little bit, when they were on this side, i heard them talking arabic, i moved to the other side and started to try to be much under the tree so maybe when the shooting will come they will not touch my face. so yes, i was lying there for, like, three hours. and did you know what happened to your friend?
12:22 pm
i was sure she was dead. i was thinking about my kids, my friend, about everything. and i said, "it's not the time to die for me, not yet." and then i started to hear some hebrew from one side and arabic from three different sides, so i realised that we have some soldiers, a little bit, five soldiers, six soldiers, and then i started to go, and decided to go to these soldiers. meanwhile, there are still terrorists around but i was going to them, with my hands up so they will know that it's me and not terrorist, and some was putting me in a car and telling me, you can go away, and they took us, me and another, someone that was coming, and all the time i was worried about my friend and then when i was coming to the second point, there was a girl here, showing photos that we took, we took her to the hospital, she is ok but until now i did not contact her,
12:23 pm
i am not sure she is alive. it was shooting in her stomach. i do not know yet, i am waiting. maybe she is... maybe having surgery or something? and then my boyfriend came with his motorbike through all these things and picked me at some point. i was the first one to go out of the field still, people taking two or three hours to go out and all of the way people were dying, on the road, young people, it is a festival for young people. many people were dying in the road. whoever try to run away, they were shooting from both sides, so best to hide. before we go, the latest on our top story. israel's military says thousands of civilians on towns near

the border with gaza will be evacuated from their homes within the next 2a hours. israeli army units are clashing with hamas militants at a number of locations in the southern part of the country, as fighting continues for a second day. these pictures are the latest from gaza city. the israeli army says more than 400 hamas gunmen have been killed. meanwhile we have had an update from air france, who have said they have suspended flights to tel aviv for the moment. the french prime minister was speaking to a french television channel there. air france suspending flights to tel aviv for the moment. an ismail haniyeh spokesman said dozens of israeli civilians and military are being held by hamas. they say 300 of their civilians have been killed.

palestinian officials in gaza say more than 300 palestinian civilians have died in israeli air strikes. plenty on our ongoing live page on the bbc news website. —— an israeli defence force spokesman said dozens of israeli civilians and military are being held by hamas. impacts from this weekend's rainfall in scotland will be felt all the way into the start of the coming week. but out there today, the met office amber warning is in force around the grampians towards the moray coast. it's here where they expect the greatest risk of further flooding and disruption, but there will be further impacts elsewhere. river levels continuing to rise and respond to the rain we've already seen today. some of the heaviest has been this morning. through the afternoon, the rain will turn a little bit patchier. there'll still be some heavier bursts mixed in, but not quite as extensive, the widespread heavy rain. to the north of it, shetland stays dry and bright but brighter to southern scotland, northern ireland this afternoon and northern england, although still some areas of cloud

around, sunniest of all central southern england and wales, away from some western coast. and it's here another warm day expected, temperatures into the mid 20s for some, not as chilly across parts of scotland as we saw through yesterday. now into this evening and overnight, far north of scotland continue to see some rain to begin with and then we could see some heavier bursts return through central scotland, but not to the level or extent you've seen through recent days. some of that also affecting northern england, maybe the far north of northern ireland, but away from that, most will have a dry night. some areas of mist and low cloud, more especially towards the irish sea and a very mild night, temperatures 16 to 17 degrees to start tomorrow morning for some in northern england. a lot of low cloud here, though, and northern ireland, southern scotland, some bursts of rain. the odd heavier one. to the north of it, isolated showers, some sunny spells. better day than we've seen through this weekend. to the south of that weather front, more dry and sunny weather, although it could remain quite misty and foggy around some western coasts. another warm one across central southern areas. temperatures in the mid teens further north. now, as we go into tuesday, a windier spell for much of the northern half of the uk. outbreaks of rain return across

scotland, some of which should be heavy and thundery. but rainfall amounts will vary widely. some heavy showers into northern england, north wales and northern ireland too during the day. for the south and east we stick dry, sunny and unseasonably warm. but that's the last of the very warm days. just about. through into midweek low pressure which will bring the windy weather across scotland will work its way eastwards, throwing a weather front southwards which will wriggle around southern counties as we go for the end of the week. so after starting the week with that north—south split still in place, you'll notice by the time we get to wednesday, even things out a little bit, outbreaks of rainjust about anywhere and it will feel cooler across the south. take care.
