hello and welcome. i'm maryam moshiri. the total number of dead from the conflict between israel and the palestinians has risen to more than 1,000, a day after hamas militants stormed into israeli territory from gaza. the israeli military says the country is "still at war in its efforts to take full control of israeli territory and communities from hamas". here are the key developments this hour. israeli tv is now putting the number of israeli civilians dead at more than 400, with palestinian health officials saying at least 320 people have died in israeli airstrikes on gaza. the israeli army also says more than 400 palestinian militants have been killed after infiltrating southern israel, with dozens more captured.
1:01 pm
israel says it is still trying to regain full control of eight areas where hamas militants infiltrated following saturday's attack. the number of israeli civilians and soldiers taken hostage has been put at 100 by the israeli embassy to the us, though some have been freed. in northern israel, hezbollah rockets targeted three military positions, with israel responding with barrages of artillery into southern lebanon. the un security council will meet later on sunday. president biden has vowed rock—solid support for israel, and warned against other countries taking advantage of the situation. one british citizen, jake marlowe, is missing. he was working as security at an outdoor party near the gaza border when the attack happened. and in egypt, two israeli tourists and their egyptian tour guide were shot dead in alexandria, apparently by a policeman.

let's show you the scene live in gaza now. israeli airstrikes are ongoing in response to hamas*s attack, including some in the last few hours. palestinian health officials say 20 children are among the more than 300 killed there. they say nearly 1,800 people have been wounded. israel is stepping up its retaliation. this is what it describes as its "mighty vengeance" on the palestinian militant group hamas. 0vernight, gaza has been rocked by explosions. earlier, warplanes hit several buildings in the centre of the city. the israeli defence forces released these pictures, which they say are

to flee for their lives. they were going three by three and shooting — pa—pow, pa—pow, pa—pow — everywhere from two sides and i saw many people were dying, like, allaround. shouting israelis were seen being taken into gaza as hostages. more than 100 soldiers and civilians were taken captive, according to the israeli embassy to the us, though some have now been rescued or released. the leader of hamas, which governs gaza, has promised to end israel's occupation of palestinian lands. translation: we are on the verge of a great victory and a clear- conquest on the gaza front. in the israeli city of sderot, which came under attack, a bulldozer is used to break into a police station where hamas gunmen were thought to be holed up. the british prime minister has

1:08 pm
they don't have any shelter facilities, so people go to the un school, because they believe it is protected by the un and nobody will hit them there. also we noticed people are going to hospitals for the same reason. since last night, until now allow, —— until now, we understand many targets have been hit by israel, most of them belong to hamas militants. they hit banks, military facilities, military infrastructure, even some police checkpoints and police stations. hamas bank was hit, buildings were hit. this morning in the gaza city centre, an 11—storey building was completely destroyed and razed to the ground on the main road for the

kilometres, the border with israel is about 3k kilometres along the israeli borders. israel pulled out of gaza 20 years ago but they still control access, goods and movement of people in and out of gaza. since yesterday when hamas launched this operation, they stopped everything. they closed the border and they stopped supplying gaza with electricity, they stop the crossings. israel in fact is controlling whoever gets in and out of gaza. people believe that as long as the fighting continues between hamas and israel, the humanitarian crisis will be greater and greater. especially because gaza has already been under a tight blockade since like 17 years. health care system has been struggling for a very long time. i've been talking to the doctors this morning in the main hospitals. they said they are

1:13 pm
well, always, you know, civilians on both sides are caught in this crossfire. in gaza, when we talk about 2.3 million people in this densely populated area, it's very hard for any army to avoid civilian casualties. we have seen in the past, for example in 2021, half of those killed in the fighting were civilians. already the health ministry figures are talking about 20 kids and about six womens. when they released the figures this morning, we noticed 19 members of one family in khan younis, and they were all killed in an air strike yesterday. israel said the house belongs to a hamas commander. but we hamas commander survived according to hamas, but the entire family was killed. in a place like gaza city, we have about 800,000 people living there. the main hamas military

compound, the main hamas police station, the main hamas facilities, banks, are in downtown gaza. so when they destroyed hamas bank yesterday, we have people surrounding them, cars, so it's really very hard to distinguish between those militants fighting israel and the majority of the people who are civilians, always paying the price of this conflict. thank you very much indeed for talking to us from gaza city. some breaking news now. according to local media, the number of israelis who have been killed by palestinian militants since yesterday's attackeds has now reached more than 500. the latest figure is more than 500. the latest figure is more than 500 israelis killed since hamas launched its attack from gaza. we also know dozens of israelis are still being held hostage, we are not sure of the exact number but we
1:15 pm
expect to hear something along those lines from hamas later today. now let me show you a map of where what israel calls "points of engagement" are continuing with hamas militants inside its territory. there are eight locations — highlighted by red points on the map. the israel defense forces say operations are taking place in communities including sufa, zikim and sderot. a spokesman says hundreds of palestinian gunmen have been killed in fighting, with dozens taken prisoner. he says fighting is ongoing to rescue hostages held by hamas militants. translation: we are searching l in a large number of communities. the idf is on the ground with special forces. there is no community without idf presence. our mission within the next few days is to evacuate all citizens from the area bordering the gaza strip. the atrocious acts of hamas are a war crime, the holding of women and children by the enemy is contrary to international war is contrary to international law

and to islam, and anyone taking part in this will be held accountable. live now to ourjerusalem and our middle east correspondent yolande knell. she is in ashkelon, one of the southern israeli towns targeted by hamas. the number of israelis killed in this attack now more than 500. that's correct. the death toll has been creeping up to the day, and i have to say it's not surprising, because we do know there are a lot of people who have family members missing, and we have colleagues who are spread around the region who have sent us pictures showing there are still bodies left along the roadsides as a result of this unprecedented surprise attack by the palestinian gunmen who came out of the gaza strip. in the hospital they say they have treated more than 400 people as a result of this attack.
1:17 pm
they include israeli soldiers whose bases were overrun. they include partygoers at an overnight rave in the fields close to gaza. they also include local people whose houses were hit by rockets. we are constantly hearing booming sounds. there was one just now. the israeli iron dome missile defence system in action, intercepting rockets overhead. the missile fire is continuing from the gaza strip. but some lockets have indeed hit and caused enormous damage in ashkelon, and injured some people as a result. —— some lockets. we and injured some people as a result. -- some lockets.— -- some lockets. we are seeing ictures -- some lockets. we are seeing pictures of— -- some lockets. we are seeing pictures of ashkelon _ -- some lockets. we are seeing pictures of ashkelon in - -- some lockets. we are seeing pictures of ashkelon in the - pictures of ashkelon in the aftermath of the rockets hitting. how have they said they are going to counter any further attacks? certainly they say they are still in gun battles going on. small pockets

where there are armed palestinians, somehow remarkably still holding out. we passed on the way here places like sderot, the road is closed off as the israeli military is going through trying to check and clear outbuildings that they were not militants hiding among homes so can go back into their homes. many areas close to the gaza strip have been evacuated. it looks like the israeli military is preparing for a possible ground operation going into the gaza strip. that's from past experience. but really this remains a very fluid and very dangerous situation, it feels.— situation, it feels. what is the feelin: situation, it feels. what is the feeling you — situation, it feels. what is the feeling you get _ situation, it feels. what is the feeling you get now _ situation, it feels. what is the feeling you get now about - situation, it feels. what is the - feeling you get now about timings? because of course there has been a warning from benjamin netanyahu that the israelis will bring their full force down on hamas in gaza city.
