8:00 pm
about half an hour after, i found that video that was seen here before of her on a motorcycle taken away from her boyfriend. hello. i'm lewis vaughan jones. welcome to our continuous coverage. the number of israelis and palestinians killed has continued to climb, a day after hamas militants stormed into israeli territory from gaza. the israeli military says the country is "still at war in its efforts to take full control of israeli territory and communities from hamas". here are the key developments this hour: the number of israelis killed is reported to have risen beyond 700. meanwhile, the gaza ministry of health says 413 palestinians have
8:01 pm
been killed by israeli airstrikes in gaza, including 78 children. the israeli army also says more than 400 palestinian militants have been killed after infiltrating southern israel, with dozens more captured. israel says it is still trying to regain full control of eight areas where hamas militants infiltrated following saturday's attack. the number of israeli civilians and soldiers taken hostage has been put at 100 by the israeli embassy to the us, though some have been freed. in northern israel, hezbollah rockets targeted three military positions, with israel responding with barrages of artillery into southern lebanon. the un security council is meeting in new york to discuss the situation. president biden has vowed rock—solid support for israel. and israel's prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, said he's spoken again
8:02 pm
to president biden, who emphasised the us's full support. the un security council is meeting in new york now. it is behind closed doors. but we are hoping to hear some statements later and will be bringing them to you. but first, our middle east correspondent yolande knell has the latest on the conflict. and i should warn you, her report has some distressing images. a devastating bombardment. israel promised overnight that hamas would pay the price for its unprecedented surprise attack. and in gaza, this was the result. translation: what happened to us is complete destruction. and there are 150 people at this building. we can't live there now. but today in israel, more gunfights, as israeli security forces pursued some of the armed palestinians who infiltrated a day ago here.
8:03 pm
here, they chased militants in a stolen car and killed them. and here, the shocking result of the earlier mass assault. the bodies of an israeli family shot dead, waiting to be taken for identification and burial. over here, you've got another one of the body bags that, disturbingly enough, you can find along the roadsides of southern israel right now. here, we're not very far from an israeli military base that was overrun by hamas militants and has since been recaptured. it's now known that among the dead, there was a 20—year—old british man, nathanel young. he'd signed up to serve as a soldier in israel. nathanel always had strong jewish pride, his brother said in a statement. from a young age, he'd always wanted to play an important role in defending his country. it's something he'd talked about a lot. but for many, the fate of their loved ones is still unknown.
8:04 pm
outside the main hospital in ashkelon, rachel ezra berated a visiting mp. "i want you to help me find my boy. "oz and his girlfriend naomi, aged 2a and 23," she tells him, distraught. this hospital has been overwhelmed, treating some 400 people, soldiers and civilians. some shot, some injured with the continuing rocket fire. it was very difficult for us. a lot of casualties have been brought. 0ne after one. very quickly. there was a reminder today of the potential for this conflict to widen. the israeli military carried out artillery strikes in southern lebanon after mortars were fired towards israeli positions. but gaza is still the main focus. it's believed dozens of israeli hostages, including women and children, are now being held there. we will not forget. hamas terrorists target israeli civilians.
8:05 pm
israel will target hamas and islamichhad terrorists wherever they will be in gaza. and for israelis and palestinians, there are worrying signs of a long war ahead. yolande knell, bbc news, ashkelon. let's ta ke let's take you live to these live pictures from the gaza strip. live camera positions, you can see darkness has fallen. this is gaza city and the lights are on, but they are a bit sporadic. we're told electricity supplies are limited, as well as access to the internet and other humanitarian supplies which will be of growing concern to humanitarian organisations working in gaza. we have seen relative calm from this particular camera angle over the last couple of hours, but
8:06 pm
that was far from the case earlier, we are keeping across those pictures for you. 0ur correspondent anna foster has the latest developments from ashkelon, in southern israel. behind me, these flashing lights are where the road was closed off. this has been almost a staging post in the last few hours. we watched ambulances coming in and helicopters landing on the road. it looks like they were evacuating casualties out of these areas. it is dark now. it looks like the skies have been regularly lighting up in the last few hours, there has been a regular barrage of missiles being fired out from gaza and when they come, you see these points of light shooting into the sky. you see the missiles intercepted by israel's iron dome system, which really catches most of the missiles coming. but the sound when that happens,
8:07 pm
it's a really sort of loud boom that you feel shaking all the way through your body and sometimes, people around here jump where that is. even though people around here are used to it now. also worth mentioning is the amount of israeli military and equipment and hardware moving into the area at the moment. lots of tanks coming into southern israel. we know that one of the priorities for the idf was securing these sudden israeli communities after they were infiltrated by hamas militants who broke through the fence yesterday morning. the question is what they feel they will do after they secure the area. you can see all the time what is going on. you can see probably flashes in the background. i can hear a plane going overhead. sometimes, you get the sound of a drone as well, they are distinctively different. you can hear the plane shooting over, the drone is a sort of consistent whining sound, and you can hear the booms that are going on, it's been
8:08 pm
constant actually, lewis, for the last few hours. and it shows you that this conflict, as it is, but certainly the escalation that we have seen in the last 48 hours or so it is really an early indication, i would say, of what is likely to happen in the next few days and potentially the next few weeks. and, anna, just talk us through, roughly, if you can, just give us a sense of the geography of how far you are from gaza and other key points around you. gaza is less than ten kilometres over here. sometimes, when you're seeing those flashes that you will occasionally get on the horizon there, gaza is really close and that is something that the southern israeli communities have been dealing with, living with for quite a long time. these missile attacks, which we'are seeing an awful lot of yesterday and today, are a regular feature of life here. certainly, when you go down
8:09 pm
the coast, we are in ashkelon, but if you go further to sderot and you look out on the gaza strip. these two areas really do rub shoulder to shoulder, and perhaps this is one of the reasons why hamas were able to carry out what was a surprise attack yesterday morning. the increasing tension is no surprise. but the way they were able to break through the fence, infiltrate using paragliders and by sea, with very little warning from the israeli security services that this was likely to happen. and from the us as well, of course, which is one of israel's big allies, nobody seemed to know that this large—scale attack was about to happen and this, along with the shock that is happening here at the moment, a stunned community. there are questions being asked
8:10 pm
about why intelligence did not pick up such a large imminent attack. looking ahead, are you getting any sense of what might happen through the night? it's difficult to know, we have been talking about this potential israeli ground incursion into gaza because that is something that is crucial, really. when we saw the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu talking in the hours after the attacks yesterday, he promised a substantial response from israel and that would certainly take the form of a ground operation. of course, you have a lot of civilians, palestinian civilians in gaza, as well as hamas militants. that of course is a place, it's very tightly packed. it's not a place that people can go out and escape. if you're palestinian, you live in gaza, israel controls the edge of the strip. it's difficult for people to move away from an operation that might be launched. don't forget the hostages, the videos we saw on social media yesterday of hostages of israeli hostages taken by hamas militants and taken
8:11 pm
potentially back into gaza. that will be something that is at play when the israeli defence forces are trying to decide how to respond to this next. if there are israeli civilians being held hostage in gaza and the belief is that is the case, perhaps as many as a hundred of them, but it's enormously difficult to tell at this stage. all these things will have to be considered carefully as israel plans its next move. thanks to anna for that. i want to take you to the united states now. the un security council is under way now. the meeting is closed, but we are keeping across that. we have had an update from the un rwa, sheltering 73,000 internally displaced people in 64 of its schools in all areas of the gaza strip. of those, 45 are
8:12 pm
designated emergency shelters, i9 designated emergency shelters, 19 are not. the un rwa school sheltering displaced families in the gaza strip was directly hit, so one school sheltering displaced families was directly hit. the school sheltering more than 225 people at the time. the school severely damaged, but no casualties were recorded among the displaced. so just to repeat that school, the un rwa school was sheltering displaced families in the gaza strip, it was directly hit. 225 people there. the schools damage, but no casualties were reported. that update. let's go back to the us now. and as i mentioned, we are waiting on these live pictures for the un security council meeting going ahead right
8:13 pm
now. ahead of it, the permanent representative of israel to the united nations, gilad erdan, spoke to the media. let's hear what he had to say. the past days have been devastating for each and every israeli. israel's suffered an unprecedented attack and the number of casualties is catastrophic. truly unfathomable. over the past two days, following hamas*s surprise attack on israel, my country has suffered hundreds of fatalities. yesterday, in the early morning of the jewish sabbath — and on a jewish holiday — savage hamas terrorists fired thousands of rockets into israel. but this was only the beginning. as rockets rained down indiscriminately upon israeli towns and cities, hundreds of hamas terrorists infiltrated israel and began a barbaric pogrom.
8:14 pm
a barbaric pogrom of unparalleled magnitude. ruthless terrorists gunned down innocent israeli civilians in the streets, murdering anything that moved. as the security council prepares to meet today, israel has one sole demand — hamas*s war crimes must be unequivocally condemned. this unimaginable atrocity must be condemned. israel must be given steadfast support to defend ourselves, to defend the free world. israel will not accept any false, false, immoral comparisons between a savage terror group that targets innocents and the democratic state of israel, this is not the comparison that the un or the security council can do.
8:15 pm
there is no reconciling with genocidal terrorists. israel will exact a heavy price on hamas, so that what we witnessed will never repeat itself. a short while ago, the palestinian ambassador to the un also gave his statement. we know only too well that the messages about israel's right to defend itself will be interpreted by israel as licence to kill. to pursue on the very path that led us here. 370, and the number is rising by the moment, of palestinians that have been killed already in one day, including children, some barely a few months old. entire families were killed in their sleep. will this bring security?
8:16 pm
will this advance peace? where is the international protection the palestinian people is entitled to when the occupying power violates international law and harms those it is obliged to protect? aren't palestinians* lives worth saving? the palestinian civilians killed, the palestinian children killed in occupied palestine could have been spared. isn't that a moral and legal obligation and a contribution to peace? why nothing is done when those killed are palestinians? we need to think hard of what logic we want to see prevail.
8:17 pm
if this is about vengeance, then many palestinians will feel they have much to avenge. if this is about peace, then the way to it is not through further entrenching oppression and occupation, but by ending it. you cannot say nothing justifies killing israelis and then provide justification for killing palestinians. we are not sub—humans. that was the palestinian ambassador to the un giving a statement before that un security council meeting got under way. that un security council meeting got underway. it that un security council meeting got under way. it is a closed meeting, but when it does wrap up, we will be straight back to new york. and we are keeping across these live pictures from gaza city. this is the
8:18 pm
black skyline. the less sunlight, there is some electricity, but we have been told power supplies are limited, access to the internet limited, too. there have been some explosions in the last few minutes. that looks like another one, you can see the occasional flash of orange in the night sky. we will be keeping across those pictures. it's becoming increasingly likely that a significant number of those killed and captured by hamas were young people attending a music festival in the southern israeli desert. social media pictures showed hundreds fleeing the nova festival, which was held near the small settlement of re*im — a kibbutz near the border with gaza, as caroline hawley reports. moments before, at a festival that brought together young people from across israel, a carefree crowd. they have no idea of the horror about to erupt. images posted on social media show

people running for their lives. witnesses say that after rockets were fired, palestinian gunmen began attacking from several directions. "don't kill me," she pleads. as noa agami and her boyfriend, avi natan are both taken captive. both are still missing, thought to have been taken into gaza. today, noa's father spoke through his anguish to israeli media. translation: i asked to see the video and then i saw - that it was definitely her. she was so scared, so frightened. i always protected her. and at this very moment, i couldn't. noa is 25, with

a passion for travel. she'd been messaging a friend just before she was kidnapped, and then the live location ended. it'sjust us waiting and hoping, really hoping and praying that everything is good. that she will come back home safely, her and her boyfriend and everyone that is in captivity now. also taken from the festival is a tattoo artist from germany. pictured here on holiday in mexico. herfamily recognised her in a celebration video. it is too upsetting to show. we were sent a video in which i could clearly see our daughter unconscious with the palestinians and them driving around the gaza strip. i ask you to send us any help or news. jake marlowe's family and friends are also desperate for news. he's a 26—year—old british man who was working at the festival. he's reported to have told his mother he loved her and promised to keep her updated before his phone began ringing out.

0n the road next to where the festival was taking place, the aftermath. we don't yet know what's happened to all those who came in these cars to party, to celebrate. shellshocked reunions with those who survived. but the brutality of the attack, the terror of it, will now be seared into the psyche of a nation. caroline hawley, bbc news. ijust want i just want to show you these pictures from downing street in london. home of the prime minister. that is not new york, i should say, thatis that is not new york, i should say, that is central london, that is downing street. this evening. live now to liverpool, to the labour party conference, where i am joined by emily thornberry, who is a shadow attorney general and former shadow foreign secretary. thank you very much for coming on the programme. it is a pleasure. i want to ask you first your reaction

we have been talking today about the importance of rewiring britain because we have a national grid which simply isn't up to it. it was fine during the days when we relied on oilfrom fine during the days when we relied on oil from the fine during the days when we relied on oilfrom the north fine during the days when we relied on oil from the north sea and from gas we were importing from around the world, but we need to move on and we need to move on to green electricity and green power and our national grid is not up to it. there are days when we lose £63 million because the national grid simply can't step up and take the energy thatis can't step up and take the energy that is being produced. we are holding back, according to the bbc, £200 billion worth of potential investment either by people who want to supply to the grid or people who want to use the grid. and people wanting to use the grid are having to put in bids to use more power and they are being told they won't be able to get a connection to the grid oran able to get a connection to the grid or an upgrade able to get a connection to the grid oran upgrade to able to get a connection to the grid or an upgrade to the grid until the late 2030s. this simply isn't good enough, there is no long—term thinking on this and what we are saying is that we will invest in the

8:27 pm
targeting israeli civilians. gunning people down in the streets of their towns. gunning them down in their homes. dragging israelis, men, women and children, across the border with gaza. a holocaust survivor in a wheelchair, women and children, all being taken hostage. so you can imagine the impact this is having in israel, and it should be revolting to people around the world. but, mr secretary, do you acknowledge that both israeli intelligence officials and us intelligence officials were caught off—guard here? this is an attack that i don't think anyone saw coming in the immediate. so was it an intelligence failure, mr secretary? do you acknowledge it was an intelligence failure? we will have plenty of time... the israelis will have plenty of time to look into that. all of us will have time to look into that. the focus now has to be on making sure israel has what it needs to deal with this attack and, at the same time, israel has come to us and asked for some specific additional assistance, i'm sure you'll
8:28 pm
hear more about that probably later today, and we're responding to that, and we have the ability to do that. iran and hamas have a long relationship. hamas wouldn't be hamas without the support it's had for many years from iran. in this moment, we don't have anything that shows us that iran was directly involved in this attack, in planning and carrying it out, but that's something we are looking at very carefully and we've got to see where the facts lead, but we do know that iran has had a long relationship with hamas. long support. it's one of the reasons that we have been aggressively working to counter iran, including sanctioning more than 400 iranians, more than 400 companies, precisely for things like the support it's provided to hamas. it's no surprise that those who are opposed to the talks, opposed to israel normalising its relations with its neighbours and with countries beyond the region, are hamas, hezbollah and iran. so it's entirely possible that one
8:29 pm
of the motivations for this attack was to try to derail these efforts to advance normalisation. something that is very hard, there are a lot of really challenging issues to work through, we're in the process of trying to do that, but the result would be, if we were able to get there, a much different path for the region and for the future. a path of greater stability, of greater integration, of people working together to better their lives. live now to shingai nyoka in washington. just talk us through what support the us has been committing to israel. ., , , the us has been committing to israel. . , , , .., israel. there has been significant movement _ israel. there has been significant movement as _ israel. there has been significant movement as you _ israel. there has been significant movement as you reported - israel. there has been significant movement as you reported there | israel. there has been significant l movement as you reported there in the last couple of hours in terms of the last couple of hours in terms of the details of the exact nature of the details of the exact nature of the support that the us is giving to israel. the pentagon has outlined what it has called its initial emergency military support. it sending aircraft carriers as well as guided missile carriers and guided missile destroyers headed from the
