this is the low shot from gaza. thank you forjoining us. reports say that mediators from qatar have had contact with her mast to try to negotiate the release of women and children taken into gaza. they suggested would be further release of 36 palestinian women and children held in israel. joining me is the granddaughter of an 85—year—old woman who was taken hostage by hamas. thank you for talking to us about this. could you tell us how this horrible affair has unfolded for you and your family?
7:31 pm
unfortunately on saturday, around 8am, we lost contact with my grandmother. she lives in a kibbutz which is on the border with gaza. she sent us a message telling us there was a terrorist shooting in her street and that was the last message we got. we have other family that lives in the kibbutz so we heard from them all the time about the terrible things going on there, that the terrorists are getting into houses and killing people, hurting them, burning their houses while they were sitting there, taking them hostage and we could not reach our grandmother. then at 5pm, who, after
7:32 pm
they got into the kibbutz and started taking people out of their hideaways, they went to my grandmother's house, it was completely broken. she wasn't there. we try to find some videos because we heard that some terrorists from gaza posted videos of people they kidnapped, and we found a video of her being taken away to gaza with four armed men around her. that is the last thing we know about her. let's talk about that video because it was circulating online saying that your grandmother has been found. can you tell us more about
7:33 pm
that, how did you discover the video to begin with?— to begin with? unfortunately, the video that was _ to begin with? unfortunately, the video that was released, - to begin with? unfortunately, the video that was released, that - to begin with? unfortunately, the video that was released, that my| video that was released, that my grandmother got back was fake. my grandmother got back was fake. my grandmother is still a hostage. she is still not here with us. that grandmother is still a hostage. she is still not here with us.— is still not here with us. that is fake. is still not here with us. that is fake- this _ is still not here with us. that is fake. this must _ is still not here with us. that is fake. this must be _ is still not here with us. that is fake. this must be really - is still not here with us. that is l fake. this must be really difficult for you and for your family, fake. this must be really difficult for you and for yourfamily, as well. it is heartbreaking. in hearts in every part of our body. we are crazy worried about her. my grandmother is ill and she takes medicine every day and we don't know how long she can survive without her medicine. we do know that every day without her medicine she suffers from a lot of pain, so the time of
7:34 pm
their must be very, very painful. but very painfulfor their must be very, very painful. but very painful for her. i'm sorry to have to ask all this i know it is very difficult, very emotional, but how are you trying to find out information about your grandmother, about where she is? have you had any details? are there any channels or avenues that you can use to figure out where she is? unfortunately not. the only thing we are trying is to talk to everyone who would be willing to listen. hopefully, someone will be able to give us some information, telling us her condition. we are doing everything we can, but right now we have no information about her. we
7:35 pm
don't know her condition, where she is, we arejust don't know her condition, where she is, we are just praying that she will be back with us. we is, we are just praying that she will be back with us.— is, we are just praying that she will be back with us. we can only imaaine will be back with us. we can only imagine how _ will be back with us. we can only imagine how difficult _ will be back with us. we can only imagine how difficult that - will be back with us. we can only imagine how difficult that would | will be back with us. we can only i imagine how difficult that would be, but thank you so much for talking to us and we really, really hope the best for your grandmother and for yourfamily to be reunited. her grandmother, 85 years of age, was taken hostage. with me is my colleague christian fraser, he is the presenter of the context which will be on in just under half an hour but he has also previously worked as a correspondent in gaza. in fact, he was the only british correspondent inside gaza in 2008 during the israeli invasion, known as operation cast lead. it is difficult obviously at this time. to hearfrom any voices inside gaza. we tried several times on this programme on the line wasn't very
7:36 pm
good. what is it like to be in there under these bombardments? i good. what is it like to be in there under these bombardments? i have so many memories _ under these bombardments? i have so many memories of— under these bombardments? i have so many memories of 2008. _ under these bombardments? i have so many memories of 2008. back- under these bombardments? i have so many memories of 2008. back then i under these bombardments? i have so | many memories of 2008. back then we were very much guests of the military armed wing of hamas who positioned us in the house close to where the tunnels were being destroyed close to the border. it is unlike any noise you have ever heard. you feel it before the explosion, the sucking in of the air, the depression that you feel in your ears. the windows are open so they don't blow out, then you feel they don't blow out, then you feel the crunch. it is just an extraordinary shocking feeling when you feel it. the air literally
7:37 pm
reverberates like a heatwave. you see the error move up and down. it is the destruction that it causes. gazais is the destruction that it causes. gaza is such a densely populated area, so you have families living on top of one another in fairly rudimentary buildings, they are swaying as the shock waves come through the area. in fact, i think we have an outtake from one of the pieces i did in 2008 and you get an impression ofjust why pieces i did in 2008 and you get an impression of just why there pieces i did in 2008 and you get an impression ofjust why there are so many casualties when these bombs are falling. this might give you an understanding of why there have been so many civilian casualties in this conflict. this was a surgical strike on a corner where military fighters were standing. over here you can see a number of houses that were badly damaged, and over here to my mouth —— to my right, chilton was my playground.
7:38 pm
5,000 of them are sheltering in un schools. 50% of the population are under 15. i remember going into a house very close to that site. the breeze block walls, a family of six or seven people, four children sitting on the floor and there were foot long pieces of shrapnel that are coming from the bomb site. a lot of them are on antidepressants because they have been subjected to for so many times before. our correspondence and gaza has lived through four of these conflicts with his family. it puts immense pressure on the civilians. it is to hamas fighters who are fighting the israelis know there are thousands and thousands of people in gaza who don't necessarily support hamas and what they are doing. people have been living through this sense, when was that report from,
7:39 pm
2008? how do people live with that. that can't be something you get used to ever. , ., ., , to ever. there is one thing i really remember — to ever. there is one thing i really remember about _ to ever. there is one thing i really remember about what _ to ever. there is one thing i really remember about what you're - to ever. there is one thing i really i remember about what you're talking about. i was sitting in a hotel at the end of the conflict, we got to gaza city and 1300 people have been killed, thousands and thousands of people injured. the gaza city was full. we were sitting on the terrace of the hotel looking up at the beach and hamas are training for children. they were with wooden weapons and crawling under nets, like a football camp. i thought about this yesterday as i was watching these young men come through the border, these are probably some of the same children i was watching on the beach. this was 15 years ago and these kids are now adults who have been through this training and been indoctrinated with this hatred for israel. they have
7:40 pm
also lived with the oppression. let's face it, gaza is sealed off, there is a blockade in place now. hamas put us with the fatah family. they had no food. it was intermittent electricity. i remember we all sat down to eat the last bag of lentils and that is all they had. there were some vegetables in the market, they are not allowed to fish in the sea, they are attacked if they are out on boats in the sea. it is a very, very difficult life and if you can trust in the israelis, which will cause many palestinians don't, then you put your trust in hamas. you might not like the tactics, but that is all you have available to you. don't forget, a lot of these people will be working for hamas leaders or people sympathetic to hamas. it comes a
7:41 pm
situation where you cannot express your concern for your opposition to the group when it is the group that has total control. christian thank you so much. we expect to see and hear more on the context, which will come up in less than half an hour. it is important to be reminded when you watch those life pictures from gaza about the people who are living through it. just to let you know, benjamin netanyahu is speaking at the moment. he is speaking in hebrew, so we will not be able to bring you his notbeable to bring you his directly, but when we have comments directly, but when we have a translation we will let you know. he's has said that israel will use enormous force against hamas. we have seen those compartments continuing along the gaza skyline. once we have translated his comments
7:42 pm
we will bring them to you. as we reported, the israeli defence minister yoav gallant has said that the blockade on the gaza strip will be tightened into a full siege, to prevent food and fuel being brought in. one organisation in gaza that this will particularly affect is the united nations relief and works agency for palestine refugees. more than 70,000 displaced people are currently sheltering in unrwa shelters. one such shelter, a school, was severely damaged in an air strike today. the bbc*s rushdi abualouf is based in gaza he gave us this update on the situation there. as you can see in the background, an israeli air strike just hit this area. we had to move from our office, this is a residential building where i live. it is a very densely populated area. when i came here i saw many people are leaving to come to this southern side of the
7:43 pm
city. since then we have had five or six air strikes. i don't think gaza has ever seen this intensity of an israeli air strike ever. i have covered many wars in gaza, but i think this is the biggest ever israeli air strike that targeted gaza. many places have been hits, including the mosque. the most significant air strike today targeted and markets in the middle of the refugee camp. it is the biggest campaign gaza were a people live there. the health minister said over a0 people died, most of them shoppers. there is a small market neara shoppers. there is a small market near a house that has been hit by the israeli air strike. people shopping in this area this morning, and airstrike shopping in this area this morning, and air strike destroyed the house, injuring as many as a hundred people and a0 people died in this area.
7:44 pm
since yesterday only about 100 people have been killed and that is bringing the death toll to 560 people killed and over 3,000 people injured. the health official as saying that they are struggling to cope with the situation, they are struggling to cope with the number of people injured in a serious condition coming from the israeli air strikes across the gaza strip. they say they are running out of medicine and fuel to operate the generators that is providing power for the hospitals. gaza is without power, about 80% of the people have no barrack, no internet for the last three days. no barrack, no internet for the last three days. juliette touma, director of communications at the unrwa,
7:45 pm
told me more about the dire situation civilians and her colleagues are experiencing in gaza. right now, let's take a back to that press conference. this is benjamin netanyahu, and he is making and direct —— and address here in tel aviv. he is speaking in hebrew, so we cannot bring it alive comments, but he has said that there are a number of palestinian gunmen still inside israel. he has also said that the air strikes against hamas in gaza urge just the the air strikes against hamas in gaza urgejust the beginning. we have seen 2a00 targeted just today. he has said that this is just the beginning. he is also called an parliamentary opposition to form a broad coalition government. this is
7:46 pm
the first sign that we are getting that these events will have political ramifications. these are some of the comments that the israeli prime minister has made in this address. it is in hebrew so we can give you the live feed. he has also said that israel's enemies have made a terrible mistake to attack israel. he has compared the hamas atrocities with isis. he said those air strikes that we have seen lighting up the skies in gaza, those are just the lighting up the skies in gaza, those arejust the beginning. he has called on parliamentary opposition to form a broad coalition government. those are some of the comments that the israeli prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, has made in that address. he is speaking
7:47 pm
in hebrew, so we will bring you more of those comments when we get them translated. just to remind you of where things stand with the conflict, the death toll does continue to rise in israel since that surprise attack on saturday. 900 people are killed, including 260 people massacred by conmen at a music festival. nearly 600 people in gaza have been killed. this is the live feed of the prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, speaking. he said earlier when he spoke from southern israel that the country will use enormous force against the hamas militant group. we have been looking at some of his further comments, saying that hamas has made a terrible mistake in attacking israel and that there are atrocities are on par with isis. he also says
7:48 pm
that these air strikes we have been shown you like pictures of throughout the day are just the beginning. he has said there will be much more of that. he also confirmed that there are still a number of palestinian gunmen inside israel and he has called on parliamentary opposition to form a broad coalition governments. he has said that palestinian gunmen killed, handcuffed children in that hamas attack on saturday. instead we lost entire families, old, young, jews and non—a9 macro. he said that only together will we win and there are difficult days ahead. what you can see on your screen just beside me is the live shots coming in from gaza of that bombardment that continues.
7:49 pm
2a00 targets have been hit. the humanitarian situation in gaza is something we have also been reporting on. there was a blockade, a total siege announced earlier. no food, no electricity going in, which is also a worsening situation for civilians in gaza. as we heard then from benjamin netanyahu post—match press conference these attacks are just the beginning, who saw his words, these air strikes against gaza orjust the beginning. he also said that any place from which hamas operates will turn to rubble. that was part of his speech. he said that we will do everything for israelis held captive in gaza. of course we have been hearing that there are still many hostages who have been taken from israel during these attacks and into gaza. we heard earlier in the programme from a
7:50 pm
woman who is 85—year—old grandmother has been taken hostage. they have no idea where she is, they are trying to establish contact. many people are in a similar situation trying to find information on their relatives. those are the live pictures in gaza. juliette touma, director of communications at the unrwa, told me more about the dire situation civilians and her colleagues are experiencing in gaza. the numbers of those displaced who have sought shelter in our schools has doubled overnight. we have registered nearly 1a0,000 people in our schools, all have fled to our schools in search of safety. it can be difficult to describe the exact situation the people are having to deal with, but can you paint a picture for us what people are going through in the shelters?
7:51 pm
from what we hear, from our staff themselves, they are terrified, really very scared and worried for their safety and the safety of their children, their relatives, theirfamilies, their loved ones. for many of them this is the sixth time that they are living through an escalation of violence, so they are really terrified. how much harder does this siege on gaza, no food orfuel coming in, how much harder does it make it for you to operate and how would you still be able to get sufficient aid to people who need it? gaza has been under blockade for the last 16 years, which is why the number of people who rely on the un refugee agency for the palestinians has increased massively over the past few years, for example 1.2 million people rely on the food assistance which we had to stop because of the escalation.
7:52 pm
a lot of people go to our schools, in fact 300,000 children go to our schools. the levels of poverty have reached more than 60%. before the 7th of october the situation was very, very difficult. we worry that a further tightening will make a situation that is very bad far, far worse, especially for civilians, among them many women and children. it is a complex, difficult situation, but what is your biggest concern at this time? what worries you the most? the safety of people, the safety of civilians, the safety of our staff. unrwa has 13,000 people who have been working with us for many years. they are the people who provide services, including schooling, health, sanitation among others, so the biggest concern
7:53 pm
is the protection and safety of civilians, women and children, including our own staff. the second concern is the humanitarian access. for us to have unlimited humanitarian access in and out of gaza, which is not happening at the moment. we have staff at the moment who are not able to get out of gaza and we are not able to get into gaza. a lot of this is not new, but there is a lot about this particular attack that is unprecedented. how optimistic are you about a humanitarian corridor being created so you can get in? at the moment the united nations is calling for the fighting to come to an end and for the protection of civilians and for civilian infrastructure, including schools, hospitals, places of worship. the fighting has to stop everywhere.
7:54 pm
let's bring you up to date with some of the latest pictures we've been seeing today. we have heard injust the past we have heard in just the past few minutes from the israeli prime minister, saying that there are difficult days ahead and that this is just the beginning difficult days ahead and that this isjust the beginning of difficult days ahead and that this is just the beginning of these bombardments. he also said we will do everything for israelis held captive in gaza. he also did confirm that are knot —— a number of palestinian conmen are still inside israel. just to bring you the latest that we know with the death toll, that we know with the death toll, that continues to rise, with 900 people killed. since israel began
7:55 pm
striking gas in response, nearly 600 people there have been killed. you will get all the latest on that and other stories in bbc news. to stay with us. hello. it's been another warm day in the south, but a drier day, notably for scotland, however. still, we've had numerous flood warnings in for severe flood warnings as well across parts of scotland. the sepa, which is the scottish environment protection agency, has got more on those flood warnings and also on the weather website. there's another warning in force actually, because although it's been drier today, this weather front still draped across from scotland to northern england will start to pop up again. so another pulse of heavy rain is due in during tonight and tomorrow. for the meantime, the weather front that we do have is pushing back northwards. that will bring some rain across the northern isles,
7:56 pm
but it trails back in across the west and invigorates overnight. so we are talking another 15 to 25 millimetres to come from that, possibly a0 to 50 over the hills through the course of tuesday. so it's going to be mild because the breeze picks up. it's going to be mild in the south because it will fill in with mist and low cloud and some fog under this ridge of high pressure, which will mean quite light winds. first things that fogs with us through the rush hour. stronger winds, though, picking up with this rain further north. the rain, though, the main story because it's falling on saturated ground into rivers that are still full and still coming. the rain still coming down from the mountains as well. so we are anticipating further issues with flooding. now, further south, we will see some of that rain in northern ireland's not quite as warm here as today, but it will feel warmer further south. there could be some showers, actually, northern england, north wales. and there's a brisk wind, as you can see tomorrow. now, that brisk wind turns to the northwest as we get through tomorrow night and into wednesday, just pushing our weather front further south. so for some parts, wednesday into thursday, we'll see the first rain that we've seen all october, not altogether dry further north, but a fresh start.
7:57 pm
a brighter start and a scattering of showers on that brisk wind, 12 to 1a. quite a dip in temperaturesm but still warm even with the rain further south, which hangs around that rain, albeit rather a weak affair on thursday. but then it starts to pick up again on friday with low pressure driving in from the south. another front driving in from the north. so we've got low pressure in charge by the end of the week, which for one reason or another does look as if we'll see some unsettled weather and we'll see some rain, perhaps the first this month for some towns and cities further south as ever. you can keep up to date on the warnings and the flood warnings online.
7:59 pm
hello, i'm christian fraser. you're watching the context on bbc news. translation: we're enforcing a total blockade on gaza. - no electricity, no food, no gas, it's all closed. we're fighting beastly people and are acting accordingly. israeli fighterjets are flying overhead and the israeli air strike continues since last night. gaza has never seen this scale and intensity of shelling and air strikes i think ever. this is unreal and unhuman. we need help to stop that,
8:00 pm
we need help to bring the civilians back home. there — the civilians back home. rhere — the civilians back home. is a huge there the civilians back home. is a hu-e barra-e overhea have there is a huge barrage overhead. we have taken_ there is a huge barrage overhead. we have taken cover. i recognise the legitimate grievances of the palestinian people. but nothing can justify these acts of terror and the killing, maiming, and abduction of civilians. the israeli prime minister has tonight warned his come to the fightback will not be quick or easy. a8 hours after hamas militants killed 900 israelis, today over 2,500 hamas targets were destroyed, double the number launched over the weekend. and there are reports in the last hour from reuters that hamas is now open to negotiating a truce.
