hello. i'm sarah campbell. in the last few hours, the israeli military has said that more than a million palestinians must leave the northern gaza strip within the next 2a hours ahead of an expected ground operation. in response, un spokesman stephane dujarric said, "the united nations considers it impossible for such a movement to take place without devastating humanitarian consequences. the united nations strongly appeals for any such order, if confirmed, to be rescinded avoiding what could transform what is already a tragedy into a calamitous situation". that statement has sparked an angry reaction from israel. the country's ambassador to the united nations said israel is trying to minimise harm to gazans. he went on to say that for many years the un has turned a blind eye to the arming of hamas and the use of the civilian population and civilian infrastructure in the gaza strip as a hiding place for weapons

to remove hamas's ability to operate and threaten israel. that will take a considerable amount of force in an extremely complex and dangerous operation for the israeli military. in 2014 they had much more limited operations into gaza and more than 60 israeli soldiers were killed. hamas will be ready for this, expecting israeli ground incursion and they will make it as difficult as they can. and they will make it as difficult as they can-— and they will make it as difficult as the can. , ., ., ., ~' as they can. our viewers are looking at ictures as they can. our viewers are looking at pictures of— as they can. our viewers are looking at pictures of gaza _ as they can. our viewers are looking at pictures of gaza and _ as they can. our viewers are looking at pictures of gaza and we _ as they can. our viewers are looking at pictures of gaza and we are - at pictures of gaza and we are waiting for a press conference by the us secretary of state and a member of the israel defense forces. we have just had a note from a bbc colleague who has been an on the record briefing with a rear admiral from the israel defense forces. he was asked about this 1.1 million people, how that happens. he said in

those with any influence, to insist on the full respect of international law in the israel — hamas conflict. 0ur chief international correspondent lyse doucet gave us an update on the military build up in southern israel well, we're just outside ashkelon. it's the southernmost city in southern israel. so we're not far from the gaza border, which is now a closed military zone, so we can only go so far. you can see behind us in the fields the armour that israel has been moving into this area ever since hamas carried out that unprecedented assault on saturday morning. since we've been standing here, there's been israeli military vehicles with troops racing past, heading to the front. yesterday, when we were on a different section of the road, there was a stream... there's more cars. the only traffic is military traffic. the civilians are either gone or they're taking shelter. yesterday we saw a stream of huge lorries, all of them white, all of them unmarked, heading to the front with provisions

for the soldiers. day by day, israel is putting the pieces into place on the military side to carry out what's certain to be, what is expected to be a ground invasion. and what we're seeing now, though, is the operations which have to take place before that, what the gazans say is nonstop bombardment night and day on the gaza strip. even from here, when we're in different positions, yesterday we could see the horizon of gaza city, and it is a plume of black smoke blacking out the sky which never leaves. we also hear the sound of israeli artillery going into gaza. and hamas is still, even under this bombardment, hamas still has the capacity to launch missiles here, so the iron dome, israel's air defence system is in action. we can hear it, with the loud blasts. you can see it in the sky when they make contact with the missiles. and so with every day this, it gathers pace. it seems certain that given

the preparations and the resources which went into hamas's assault on israel by land, sea and air, of a size and scale that hamas has never conducted before, that israel has never confronted before, that at the same time, they would have made the preparations for what they would know would be a ferocious israeli retaliation. and those are the underground network of tunnels. those are pre—positioning food and fuel for generators to keep going. those are finding places where, in this case, in this crisis, where they are hiding notjust theirfighters and their commanders, but also the hostages that they have taken. never has there been a hostage crisis on this scale.

we start to hear gunshots for all they start. 0ne apartment, one apartment, one apartment. start to break the windows, break the doors and start to shoot you. sounds people screaming. the killers filmed themselves on the loose, murdering dozens in thejewish community of kfar aza. trapped in her home with no israeli army to be seen, neta realised the only person who could save her was her dad, who she hadn't spoken to in six years. hiding, staying silent, she managed to message him. "they are close," she wrote. "lock the doors," her dad replies. "please answer, please."

but the gunman found them. he started to shoot like we're nothing. i fell down on the ground and i felt santiago scream on me. "neta, please stand up. start to run. if you don't stand up, we're going to die. we're going to die." hiding under a pile of rubbish, she texted her dad again. "dad, they shot me. help!" "i'm coming," he replies. when she text me that they shot her and she didn't answer me, my heart stops and my brain starts to work. you know, i was mad. when shimon, a plainclothes policeman, arrived at the village, he came under attack. i took my gun and they start to shoot at me. i shoot at them. i don't know if i hit or not. and four people get from their houses over there and with the ak—47 start to shoot me. eventually, shimon found neta near their burnt—out home and took

hello. our first chill of the autumn heading our way this weekend. some of you are already feeling it across parts of scotland and northern ireland today. the blue colours on this chart show where temperatures are below normal, reds are where they are significantly above, including southern parts of england and wales today. but notice into the weekend how the blues deepen for all of us. all of us will notice those temperatures drop. the colder conditions are waiting to the west of this area of low pressure. it's that and especially these weather fronts that have produced heavy rain so far today across parts of england and wales. it's shifting southwards through this afternoon. there will be some sunshine at times in the far south before that rain arrives. one or two heavy showers in the east of the english channel. it's quite windy here, but scotland, northern ireland, northern england, north wales, sunny spells this afternoon, but a blustery wind pushing in a few showers, especially in the north and west of scotland. the winds in northern scotland gusting 50mph, 60mph, maybe a little bit more later. that adds to the chill here. just nine or ten degrees in lerwick and stornoway, 22 towards east anglia and the south—east, where we'll see the rain push through during the second half of the evening rush hour before clearing.
10:27 am
for the rest of the night, showers peppering northern and western coasts. those showers turning increasingly wintry across the north of scotland, but with some clear skies elsewhere. if you are sheltered from some strong winds, it will feel rather chilly. south—east scotland, north—east england maybe a bit of frost. the strongest winds are on the southern flank of this area of low pressure, to the north and north—east of scotland for saturday, but it will help to drive that colder air southwards to all the blue colours on the chart here. now, if we take took a look at saturday, we'll have frequent showers turning wintry across northern scotland. showers may be wintry in the west of england and wales on the tops of the highest hills, but most it's rain, maybe a little bit of hail. some of those showers pushing their way southwards and eastwards. but a good parts of southern and south—eastern scotland, eastern and southern england will stay dry on saturday. but, for all, seven to 13 celsius, it will feel colder, well down on what we've had for some through the week. with winds falling a bit lighter through saturday night into sunday, our first widespread rural frost on the grass for sunday morning, especially across the central
