as you mentioned, there's obviously a huge issue in the middle east at the moment. israel has been warning for 1.1 million civilians to evacuate gaza in 2a hours. not only is that timeframe too short for that many people to leave because the border doesn't have the facilities to do that, but the borders are closed and the un are saying it's an impossible demand. do you feel any sympathy for the innocent palestinians, many of whom have no affiliation to hamas whatsoever, who may lose their lives because of this? and when you spoke to benjamin netanyahu, did you raise any concerns? well, we're monitoring the situation very closely. we have formally updated our travel advice. and, of course, humanitarian concerns and protection of civilians are very important. and this is something that i spoke to prime minister netanyahu about late last night. it's also why we've moved royal navy assets into the mediterranean over the coming week and they will be able to provide humanitarian support if required. we're seeing a blockade of food, medicine and water to gaza
1:46 pm
and what some are saying is potentially a breach of international law. are you ok with israel potentially committing war crimes and you're providing full moral support regardless? it's important to remember why we're in this very difficult situation, and that's because hamas, a proscribed terrorist organisation, committed an appalling act of barbarity and has killed over a thousand israelis, including women and children, in scenes that are, quite frankly, horrific and that we haven't seen in decades. it is unequivocally wrong, and there is no moral ambiguity about that. israel has every right to defend itself and take the action that is necessary to ensure protection and security of its citizens and that nothing like this can ever happen again. even if some of those actions are not in line with international law? no, of course, we should always and we are always having concerns of civilians paramount in our minds, something i've discussed with prime minister netanyahu myself, and underlined with what the secretary of state from the united states and the president have said,
1:47 pm
that of course, israel should take every possible precaution to protect civilians as they exercise their rightful ability to defend themselves against attacks like this. this morning, the defence secretary said that it's highly likely the british citizens may be among those who have been taken hostage in gaza. what is the government doing to try and help those civilians and try and get them out? yeah, it is a complex situation on the ground and tragically british people have lost their lives and several are also missing. we are working very closely with the israeli authorities and in contact with families to provide all the possible support that we can. and as we also announce that we are increasing our military teams across the region and making sure we're doing everything that we can to ensure the security of british citizens. here in the uk, there's been an uptick in anti—semitic crimes, members of thejewish community are afraid to send their children to school. some business owners are reporting vandalism at their sites. what are you doing to stop that from happening? and do you think acts like lighting up wembley should be taking place? so, yesterday i chaired
1:48 pm
a meeting of police chiefs in downing street together with the community security trust, to specifically make sure that everybody, in particular ourjewish communities can feel safe. there's been a, quite frankly, disgusting rise in anti—semitic incidents over the past few days. that's not right. we've provided extra funding to the community security trust to make sure thatjewish institutions, whether that's synagogues or schools, have the protection they need and that the police have all the support that they need to ensure that our streets are safe for people from all communities, cos we will absolutely not tolerate people inciting hatred or violence or racist activity. intimidating or threatening behaviour will not be tolerated. it will be met with the full force of the law. would you say waving palestinian flags in public or saying, "free palestine" in public would constitute that? there's very clear guidance for the police about the measures that they can take. but inciting violence, racial hatred is illegal. people who are acting in an abusive or threatening manner, causing distress,
1:49 pm
are breaking the law. the police have the powers and the tools they need to make sure that they can stop that from happening. and you will see that in full force over the coming days to make sure anyone who breaks the law meets the full force of that law. back to the live pictures i promise just a few moments ago. this is in the yemeni capital. there are large numbers of people in the capital protesting in solidarity with gaza. this is just one of several large protest in middle east capitals since friday. in central baghdad, demonstrators turned out, that is the capital of iraq, in iran we had large anti—israel protests also held. people in the capital waved

iranian, palestinianflags. iranian, palestinian flags. they have also been protests injordan. also in oman. we have seen protests in bahrain, hundreds of protesters shouting, death to israel and death to america. it is saying that police took away a worshipper who interrupted friday prayer. protest continuing in several middle east capitals. we will be keeping an eye on that for you. this one you are seeing on your screen is from the yemeni capital. scottish first minister humza yousaf, has shared an emotional video clip of his mother in law, elizabeth el—nakla, on social media. the retired nurse from dundee was visiting relatives in gaza with her husband when hamas militants launched their surprise

attack on israel on saturday. the couple remain trapped in gaza. here's some of that video, shared by mr yousaf: this will be my last video. everybody from gaza is moving towards where we are. one million people, no food, no water, and still they're bombing them as they leave. where are we going to put them? but my thought is all these people in the hospital cannot be evacuated. where's humanity? where's people's hearts in the world to let this happen in this day and age? may god help us. goodbye. here, threejewish schools in north london have chosen not to open today, because of safety concerns and the risk of violence on the streets. it's after hamas called for global protests, in support of palestinians.
1:52 pm
the metropolitan police has issued a statement saying "there is no place for hate crime in london". they say they're ready to help anyone who has been affected by prejudice, ignorance or violence. the force said they would take action on any hate crime reported to them. doctor david landau is the chair of one of these schools, the menorah high school for girls. he spoke to the bbc*s today programme earlier. we have a situation where we have this international day of rage that's been called for. we've had horrible demonstrations in london where anti—semitism is openly displayed and the deaths ofjews are celebrated. we've had attacks onjewish shop fronts in golders green, where we're roughly based, and individually to our school. we are fairly isolated from the rest of the community. we're in a nice community, but nevertheless we're out there on our own. and we felt that there was significant risk to the kids. the community security trust, as you've mentioned, were very helpful.

the police were fantastic. but ultimately, we're worried about individuals that might decide on a day like this to do something outstandingly stupid. with more on this let's talk to our correspondent helena wilkinson who's in the newsroom. helena, you've been to a briefing with the met police. what did they have to say? in the last couple of hours, we have heard from deputy assistant commissioner, lawrence taylorfrom commissioner, lawrence taylor from the commissioner, lawrence taylorfrom the metropolitan police in london. he talked about a number of issues following the hamas attack in israel on saturday, talking about how tensions were increased. he described them as high in the capital, referred to and asked about the school closures as well, that you touched upon there, three london jewish schools which have closed today. mr taylor said there had not been any specific threats against any school in london, but they had
1:54 pm
30 dedicated police officers who are working with schools, talking to pupils, talking to parents in london about their concerns and he also talked about a massive increase, those were his words, in the number of hate crimes in london following that attack on israel on saturday. just to give you some figures that we are provided by mr taylor during this briefing, last year between the 30th of september and the 13th of october, there were 14 anti—semitic incidents and i2 offences. this year, during that same period, mr taylor said there has been 106 incidents and 75 anti—semitic... there has been a significant level of concern across communities in london and have got many police officers on patrol in london, trying
1:55 pm
to reassure communities, but also sending that message to anyone that believes they may be the victim of a hate crime or if they are fearful or worried about safety, they should contact the metropolitan police force. and what about protests planned for tomorrow? mr taylor touched upon that, talked about their anticipation that they are expecting thousands of people to protest, it's going to be a pro—palestinian protest in central london tomorrow, saturday. the full metropolitan police are going to have a thousand police officers. they do not have the right to incite violence, despite the right to protest. he talked about flags and banners, the law is very clear, anyone waving a flag in support of
1:56 pm
hamas or proscribed organisations, they will be arrested, he said anyone possessing or waving a palestinian flag without the context, would not be committing any offence, but if it is associated with the other actions, they could be. huge protests expected tomorrow in central london, mr taylor said he has met earlier on with the attorney general and also with the crown prosecution service that he said for his offices, it's a tricky situation and wants to get complete clarity and wants to get complete clarity and guidance from both the attorney general and the crown prosecution service, so then he can brief those officers, more than a thousand officers, more than a thousand officers who will be on duty tomorrow in london, patrolling the protest. tomorrow in london, patrolling the rotest. . ., ~ , ., ., protest. helena, thank you for takin: us protest. helena, thank you for taking us through _ protest. helena, thank you for taking us through that. - now it's time for a look at the weather. hello there. good afternoon. plenty of rain around today,

particularly across southern england and wales, along with still that milder air lingering on. further north, colder air, but also some sunshine. and we're all going to be coming into those chillier—feeling conditions as we head through the weekend. so feeling a lot more like autumn. temperatures dropping below the seasonal average this time. it will be windy, but there will be a lot of sunshine around as well. and this is the position of the weather front on friday. it's going to be pushing further southwards and eastwards as we head through the rest of the afternoon. that cold front sweeping away the milder air into this evening and overnight. behind the weather front, there's quite a lot of sunshine around, but also some showers just streaming down on that north—westerly wind. it's quite a brisk wind, certainly towards exposed coastal areas, and especially out towards the far north—east of scotland and the northern isles. quite windy conditions developing here later on. still, that milder air lingers on towards the south and the east. a lot chillier, 10 to 1a degrees celsius for much of north—west england, northern ireland and scotland. so some heavy downpours of rain through the evening rush hour for the south—east. the rain clears away.
1:58 pm
chillier overnight tonight with lots of clear skies around and temperatures dropping back to around three to seven degrees celsius. so noticeably colder into saturday morning. and then on saturday, with our weather fronts across europe, we've got the north—westerly winds still, some gales in association with this area of low pressure out towards the north—east of scotland. and of course, that colder—feeling air streaming down from the north. so feeling very different, a lot more like autumn. there will be a lot of sunshine around, but do watch out for some showers that will blow through northern ireland, perhaps north—west england and down through north—west wales. some of the showers could even turn out to be a bit wintry over the high ground, perhaps, at times. still strong winds for the northern isles, for aberdeenshire. elsewhere, a brisk nort—westerly and temperatures peaking between nine and 13 degrees celsius. so quite a drop there. on saturday night, again, plenty of clear skies. the winds will lighten a little and many of us could see a touch a ground frost as we head into sunday morning. so the coldest night of the autumn so far.
1:59 pm
