welcome to verified live. rishi sunak has told his israeli counterpart benjamin netanyahu that the uk will stand by israel in what both men described as its darkest hours. during talks injerusalem, rishi sunak affirmed israel's ray to defend itself after attacks by hamas killed about 1400 people. there are also continuing concerns about the plight of people in gaza who rishi sunak said were also victims of hamas. he welcomed plans to get it into the territory via egypt. aid agencies are warning that gaza is in need of far more aid than the initial 20 lorries announced by president biden during his visit to israel yesterday. the un humanitarian chief says about 100 lorries will be required every day. more than 60 international charities including christian aid, 0xfam and save the children have called for a ceasefire. latest reports say that several people including children

of other world leaders is to show israel that its allies have its back. there may well be calls for restraint but what happens next is perhaps inevitable and they will not try to persuade israel otherwise. israel's military build—up on the border with gaza continues. when it goes on is perhaps yet to be decided but with the avowed intention of completely destroying hamas, those who have seen this before say this time will be different. the two previous ground campaigns in 2009 and 2014 both lasted for about 18 days and then the israeli forces on the ground left. this time, it's going to be a lot longer than 18 days and nobody is going to say whether it takes weeks, months or even years until israel has reached that objective of eradicating hamas leadership and military capabilities in gaza. so that is really the main difference now. for now, israel continues

to hit targets inside gaza from the air, confirming it had hit hundreds of hamas infrastructure sites. but palestinian officials say there have also been numerous civilian casualties, many of them children. gaza's humanitarian situation is dire and, like president biden before him, rishi sunak impressed on israeli leaders the importance of allowing limited aid into gaza through the border with egypt, something israel has agreed to and which should begin by the end of the week. making use of from scotland where there is a red warning about storm babet. more than 350 homes are being evacuated in brechin forfears babet. more than 350 homes are being evacuated in brechin for fears of flooding. we can hearfrom angus council, the local authority which

4:13 pm
this evening and the severe flood warning comes into play this afternoon. the updated data we have from sepa from our partnership meeting is that the concern remains around nine o'clock this evening. that's the areas that we are looking at, the timings we are looking at. we think the river will sort of reach the top levels of the barriers at that level at that time and then we have to see what will happen. the river will continue to rise because it will not have peaked by nine o'clock. we need to be on top of that and that's why it's important that and that's why it's important that people are safe and not within their homes because we don't know what is likely to happen in terms of that overtopping. i also mentioned earlier that we have concerns about the wind direction. the wind direction for this event is very

4:21 pm
an event affecting right across angus and tayside. that was authorities in brechin are discussing the evacuation plans of 350 houses in one of the worst affected areas from the flooding in scotland. we heard they are that shelters are open for affected residents. we also heard that the vulnerable will be prioritised by authorities. the council have said they had advising people to evacuate but they cannot force them to evacuate. we also heard there is concern because of more heavy rainfall overnight and there is concern about those flood barriers in brechin so there we have it, some of the key lines from that press conference in brechin where there is concern that will continue overnight
