as the aussies got off to a brilliant start with the bat. openers david warner and mitchell marsh both passed centuries to put their side in a dominant position, with warner top—scoring on 163. pakistan did well to limit the damage towards the end of the innings, with shaheen afridi finishing with five wickets, as australia posted a score of 367—9. in reply, as you can see, pakistan on 60 without loss in the 11th hour. in tennis, ben shelton has once again come out on top in the all—american clash against tommy paul. shelton got the win over paul in the fourth round of the us open and backed that up with a quarterfinal win at the japan open in tokyo. shelton, who's ranked 19th in the world, won 7—6, 6—3 over fifth seed paul. shelton will face fellow american marcos girone in the semifinal, after he beat canadian felix augur—allisassime 6—1, 6—4. in other tennis news, 22—time grand slam champion rafael nadal says the australian open injanuary is his most realistic option

2:49 pm
were taken hostage by hamas. more than 1,400 people were killed, mostly civilians according to israeli officials. to israeli defense forces release details about those believed to be being held in the gaza strip, more than 20 of them under 18. earlier i spoke to mahol shosh. her husband, noy, was killed by hamas when they broke into their home. her 13—year—old niece gali and 15—year—old nephew lior from kibbutz be'eri are missing. she relived what happened that day. on the october 7th, in the very morning, we had the alerts for the rockets from the gaza strip. we immediately entered the safe room, and shortly after we receive some warning to our cell phones that they are breaching the fence, some terrorists, and we did not know any details about that, just stay in a safe room and locked
2:50 pm
the doors and just to hold on. but shortly after, in my whatsapp group of mothers from the kibbutz, the mothers started to report many terrorists inside, every motherjust said they are here they are inside my house, they tried to enter. when i try to understand where they are, i realise that each of the women is not living close. it's different parts of the kibbutz, and it sounded like they are everywhere. and it was very scary and we held the kids and we just waited, because there was nothing left to do. so you made it into your safe room. just remind us, your husband was there and your children. yes, my husband and my children, we have three children, small children. the oldest one is five and a half,
2:51 pm
the middle one is four years old and the youngest is a year and a half. my husband realised that there is something serious and he went out from the safe room to take his gun and he brought his gun to the safe room just as a last resort, he kept saying, if there is nothing left to do, i will use the gun. it was very scary and we could hear shooting from outside from everywhere, it was really hard to realise from where because we were closed inside the safe room. we stayed there for a few hours, i think seven hours or maybe eight hours. after eight hours inside the safe room, someone tried to open it from the outside, and we heard speaking arabic from the outside. my husband held the door as hard as he could,
2:52 pm
because our safe room is not locked from the inside, it's not possible to lock it. because it was meant for saving our lives from rockets and the rescuer to be able to open it from the outside. he just held the handle as much as he could to prevent them from entering and they kicked the door and they threw some grenades on the door and there was a very loud booming sound. afterwards, they shot at the door. my husband was injured because the safe room door is not bullet—proof. it's made from metal but it's not bullet—proof completely. the bullet went through, and he was shot.
2:53 pm
he was bleeding severely, he was shot in his arm and in his belly. he fell to the ground, i took his gun from him. the kids were screaming behind me. i took the kids and i put them in a place where if someone would open the door, he would not see them first. ijust sat there and held the gun and pointed it to the door and very soon after i saw the end of a rifle through, i think, the hole in the door because i believe the door was still closed, and i shot some bullets from the gun and my husband was being shot again in his back. but the rifle went back, they tried to open again and tried
2:54 pm
to hit the door and i shot again. and i think may be at that point i think i hit something or someone. because then they stop trying to enter, but instead they lit up some... ..something outside the door and they tried to smoke is in. i can't... and the room... i can't imagine how terrifying it was to have been and at that point, you didn't expect to survive, i would imagine? yeah, i... my children kept screaming, and i tried to take care of my husband. i tried to put pressure on his wounds to stop them bleeding, he was bleeding severely. i tried to call for help.
2:55 pm
i recorded some messages in the whatsapp group, recording that he is injured, that he is bleeding, that there is smoke, anything that someone would help. matthew will be here at the top of the hour with the latest on the humanitarian crisis in gaza. to stay with us. hello. we're still not out of the woods yet, as far as impactful weather is concerned. the met office have recently introduced yet another red warning for heavy rain. this is for all day saturday. similar areas but slightly smaller zone compared with where the red warning was today. another 100 millimetres on top of saturated ground, further severe flooding possible. and also in saturday, more amber warnings across other parts of eastern scotland.
2:56 pm
let's get back to today, though, because the amber warning has come into force across the eastern pennines, peak district, parts of north—west england. here is where the rainfall will be at its worst through the rest of today. rainfall totals totting up, river levels rising, improving conditions all across the south—west midlands, parts of south wales compared with the morning. rain eases off a bit in parts of north wales and the midlands and across those flood hit areas of eastern scotland there will be respite from the rain this afternoon. sunshine developing, but strong winds remain in place across scotland. strong winds today across northern england, too. that only adds to enhancing the rainfall on the eastern side of the pennines and the peak district. lightest winds across the south where only one or two showers, sunny spells, it will feel warm and quite pleasant. into tonight, rain, then, to start with mainly across parts of north wales, northern england, but then increasingly so, edging its way into northern and eastern parts of scotland. once again, a few clear
2:57 pm
skies here and there, and it won't be a cold night, although the wind will make it feel pretty unpleasant across scotland once more into tomorrow morning. so this is the set—up for saturday. low pressure weather is held in place by this stubborn area of high pressure to the northeast, more in the way of strong winds through the english channel. some longer spells of rain possible developing here through the day. some of that heavy and thundery, most persistent rain, though, to the north and east of scotland, again piling into those areas really badly hit by floods so far. in between though, parts of northern ireland, northern england, north wales, north midlands, some brighter skies develop. one or two will stay dry throughout the day with some sunshine for all. temperatures will be around where we should be for this stage in october. now, if you're looking for some dry weather, it will come from most on sunday. even across scotland, a few showers will remain into sunday, but overall, a lot more in the way of dry weather. the best of the sunshine, northern ireland, england and wales. but do not drop your guard even then, because next week will see further bouts of rain. take care.
