some news from downing street in the last few minutes with regards to the israel gaza conflict. prime minister rishi sunak has spoken to the french president emmanuel macron today, following the expansion of israel's military operation against hamas. a spokesperson said, the leaders expressed the importance of getting urgent humanitarian support into gaza, they agreed to work together to get crucial food, fuel, water and medicine to those who need it, and to get foreign nationals out. the spokesperson went on to say, they express their shared concern at the risk of escalation in the wider region, in particular the west bank. the prime minister and president macron updated on conversations they have had with leaders in the region to stress the importance of ensuring they work for regional stability. they agreed it is important not to lose sight of the long—term future of the region, and particular the need for a two state solution. they

underscored that hamas does not represent ordinarily palestinians and that their barbarism should not undermine the legitimate aspirations of the palestinian people. a spokesperson from downing street ended by saying, the leaders said they would stay in close contact with one another and with leaders in the region. so there you have a call between president macron and prime minister rishi sunak, talking about the latest on the israel gaza conflict. the un's agency, unrwa, says it's concerned that civil order is starting to collapse, following three weeks of war. it comes after thousands of people broke into aid depots in gaza. just 80 trucks carrying supplies have reached he the territory in the past week. earlier we spoke to juliette touma, director of communications at the un palestine refugee agency. she told us more about those scenes of disorder in gaza.
1:39 pm
as of this morning, we are very, very sad that unwra confirmed that 59 of our colleagues have been killed in the war in gaza. many of them were teachers, school principals, engineers, doctors, specialists, support staff that helped us with our huge humanitarian operation. we do know that the bombardments and air strikes continued. we are terrified for the fate of our teams on the ground in gaza. they continue to deliver, however, against all odds and with all the challenges that continue to be out there in the shelters, giving whatever assistance they can to the communities in need in line with our humanitarian mandate. just in one week we only had 80 trucks, just above 80. that's when we say it's a drop in the ocean or it's crumbs. it's not a pr stunt, it's the truth. because before the war, gaza used to get 500 trucks every day.
1:40 pm
so in one week, we had just over 80 trucks. yesterday, because of the breakdown in communications, we did not have a humanitarian convoy. and none of these trucks that have been coming into the gaza strip had fuel in them. and the needs for fuel continue to be very, very high. there had been a communication blackout, after phone and internet connection to gaza was cut ahead of israel's intensified bombardment on friday. but ahmed bayram, media and communications advisor at norwegian refugee council middle east, which provides assistance and protection to refugees, told us he's finally managed to reestablish some contact with his teams in gaza. yes, we have managed to get one of our colleagues on the lines, for 58 seconds, in which he told us the threats we wanted to hear — i am alive. the rest of his message was about not being able to tell

for 58 seconds, in which he told us the three words we wanted to hear — i am alive. the rest of his message was about not being able to tell which house was bombed, at which town in which street, my colleague told me that there were streets being bombed outside and no one was getting any information on that. just this morning, with communication gradually returning, people were allowed to come to the scale of what happened over the last 36 hours and there are people who just discovered that relatives or neighbours or friends or family are stuck under the rubble, you know, unable to call emergencies. what is happening is gaza is going from bad to worse all the time around the clock and the level of support that is arriving are simply not enough. speaking on sunday with laura kuenssberg this morning, liberal democrat mp layla moran, who has family in gaza, called for a "humanitarian ceasefire" and told victoria derbyshire about what happened to her extended family during the first week of the war.

deeply offensive to suggest that hamas is giving my family any kind of marching orders. that has nothing to do with hamas. the reason is this it's over three generations. one is frail with 11—year—old twins. there is bombing in the south and they were given a safe route to the south but nowhere in gaza is safe. the conversation in gaza now are afraid to say has changed. no longer are people saying where do we go to be safe. the question they are now asking is where we want to be when we die. , ,., asking is where we want to be when we die-_ and _ asking is where we want to be when we die._ and this - asking is where we want to be when we die._ and this is - asking is where we want to be when we die._ and this is not we die. oh, my god. and this is not hyperbole — we die. oh, my god. and this is not hyperbole this _ we die. oh, my god. and this is not hyperbole. this is _ we die. oh, my god. and this is not hyperbole. this is not _ we die. oh, my god. and this is not hyperbole. this is notjust - we die. oh, my god. and this is not hyperbole. this is notjust from - hyperbole. this is notjust from them but from their friends and family there in touch with. i cannot overstress the situation. when they say want to minimise casualties, they are failing. the uk, america, they are failing. the uk, america, they are failing. the uk, america,

today tributes are being paid to the friends actor matthew perry, who's died at the age of 5a. the star, who played chandler bing in the globally successful sitcom, which was one of the biggest shows of the 905 and noughties, was found dead at his los angeles home. our arts and entertainment correspondent lizo mzimba reports. each of friends* six characters brought unique characteristics to the show. matthew perry's chandler was the funny one. someone at work ate my sandwich. well, what did the police say? i'm sorry, we don't have your sheep. i went to that tanning place your wife suggested. was that place the sun? supremely talented at delivering sometimes self—aware one—liners. i'm chandler, i makejokes when i'm uncomfortable. i'm not great at the advice. can i interest you in a sarcastic comment? but during his time on the comedy hit he was struggling with addiction between the end of one season

and the start of the next. losing more than 20 kilos, something he often spoke candidly about. it became a very public issue, which in hindsight was quite good. i mean, i'm happy that it was because it ultimately helped me in the long run because i had to go through the struggles publicly and i got to help a lot more people. in the early hours of this morning us media reported that the actor had been found dead in his hot tub. the los angeles police department confirmed to the bbc that a man in his 505 was unresponsive in a water emergency at perry's home. we go way back before monica made an honest man... among those paying tribute have been maggie wheeler, who played janice, a previous girlfriend of chandler's. she said... what a loss, the world will miss you, matthew perry, the joy you brought to so many in your two short lifetime will live on.

journalist based in los angeles. she spoke to us earlier following the death of matthew perry. if you think back to the 905, it was the sitcom of the 905 and the final episode had an audience of over 5a million people in america. just that episode, if you think how it's never off our tv5 ever since. all of the stars have become quite timeless because we still think of them as the age they were when they were in friends, because it is on tv so often. matthew perry was an a—lister that everyone liked. no—one seems to have a bad word to say about him, when they encountered him, worked with him, had to interview him. he said in a previous interview that he wanted his legacy to be if somebody bumped into him then they would say, he's a nice guy, and that does seems to be what his legacy is, people saying he's a nice guy. yes, he had his demons.

he spoke openly about them and wrote about them in his autobiography. it was almost like therapy for him when he released his autobiography a year ago when he talked in depth about his demons, the pain he gone through, he talked about the millions he spent on going to rehab and trying to get through that, and i think what is clear from all of the tributes to him is that not only the shock that he has died so young but how much he was loved. matthew perry, who has died at 5a. plenty about his life and career on the bbc website. lots to read about, his addiction but also his success as an actor. now it's time for a look at today's sport. it's been a really big weekend. it has indeed. we will have

he's in no doubt about the magnitude of the occasion. it is above many other derbies. it is so huge, it's manchester internal but i think it's also about world football and all the eyes will be on this game, a global one. i was in barcelona and munich and i travelled to england to play against them, it was a special scenario, a special place in the course, here is special for our fans for all of us, but in the end, it is a football game. south africa's rugby players are getting ready to head home after successfully defending their world cup title with victory over new zealand in the final in paris. the springboks are expected to hold a trophy tour around south africa next week, when they will parade the webb ellis cup to their loyalfans, all after a night to remember, as our sports correspondent andy swiss reports.
