hello and welcome to sports day. here are the headlines — hosts india thrash defending champions england at the cricket world cup. the manchester derby went the way of city at old trafford and max verstappen wins again, this time at the mexico city grand prix. hello and welcome along to the programme. lots to bring you on a busy sunday of sport. and we're starting at the men's cricket world cup where india remain unbeaten after a 100 run victory over england, which leaves the defending champions all but out while india sit top of the table on the cusp of the semi—finals. katy cornwall reports.
12:46 am
this was meant to be the big one, the defending champions against the hosts. but such has been england's demise in recent weeks. their tournament felt all but over before this began. could they somehow turn things around against unbeaten india? well, the signs were surprisingly good. the great virat kohli gone for a duck. the crowd stunned into silence. england were now playing some of their best cricket of the tournament, but they still had to contend with the fluency of rohit sharma on a tricky pitch his 87 helped india recover. 230 was the target for england. the game was in their grasp. but then, in steamed jasprit bumrah and out went england's top order. joe root lasted only one ball. england can usually rely on ben stokes. he went down swinging for naught. one of four england batters to fall

to the magic of mohammed shami. but india's best was yet to come as kuldeep yadav bamboozled england's captain. the ball of the tournamentjust maybe. five wickets down and with little to cling to, england collapsed to 129 all out. india had blown them away. england are still not mathematically out. and while they're putting on a brave face, their world cup defence has hit a crushing new low. katy cornwall, bbc news. so let's hear from both sides. firstly, a delighted kuldeep yadav. we as a bowler thought probably we have to pick early wicket to be in the game and certainly just pretend shami did and and after they like four down for like a0 runs we just trying to bowl in perfect areas and make them make made mistake that was our plan as a bowler, as a spinner me and juju and definitely when you when you lose early wicket you always behind the game. we knew it was going to be hard work today. india on their home patch. and to be honest, i was really

pleased at the halfway mark. i thought it was definitely our best bowling and fielding effort, and we went out to bat with a lot of positivity about being, you know, a very achievable total. there was a lot of dew out there as well. so i thought particularly after the start, we got none for 30 that we were well placed. but any time you lose four for ten, you put yourself under pressure and chase and it unravelled again from there. unfortunately. we'll start with cricket because after recording their first ever odi win over pakistan nearly a week ago, afghanistan are preparing for their next world cup match in pune on monday when they take on sri lanka, who were also on a high after beating defending champions england in their previous match. their previous match champions england in their previous match. after their win over pakistan, afghan coach jonathan trott said he was most impressed with the professional manner of their approach towards the win. the former sri lanka superstar muttiah muralitharan says
12:49 am
they've got a very good team for spinners. like unbelievable spinners because they are different. mujeeb rashid khan, nabi, they got a lot of spinners and the fast bowlers are not bad. farooqi and the fast bowlers also very skilled and they are being picked in ipl teams if you want to be best of four to play the team. if they knew ahmed so like you know, one of the best and batting wise they are powerful batting line because theyjust play very attacking cricket. onto football now. and it's been a difficult afternoon for the red half of manchester after manchester city comfortably beat their united rivals in their premier league derby. before the game, there were poignant scenes as supporters from both sides of the city pay tribute to the late sir bobby charlton. erling haaland scored twice for city at old trafford, his first a penalty and then his second header just after the break. phil foden scored city's third goal. i think but this is a machine erling is a two goals
12:50 am
he got to score four is a threat for the opponents is incredible. we are confident when we have him there because have this mentality the penalty is aggressive and so yeah, i'm really pleased. so since we come back international break score every you know every game of score is so important. i think first of all, we played very good. so we defended very well, came and went up. we had good breaks, we had good opportunities. maybe we could have take more benefit from it. but i think still we did. and i think the penalty changes the game and then we had to react. second half to go more offensive. and from there, they take benefit from us. well, meanwhile at anfield, liverpool's players showed their support for their team—mate luis diaz, whose parents had been kidnapped in colombia. diaz clearly didn't play, but liverpool were dominant against nottingham forest, beating them three nil. goals from diogo, jota, darwin, nunez and mo salah. it was with us in the hotel
12:51 am
and then itjust went home. i think it's a very harsh situation. i don't know if anyone knows how we react if it happens to us. it's just hard to think about it. and yeah, it was going to play. i played instead of him and ijust remember obviously if we score, then i scored to all these shirts to show him a little bit. we are obviously with him and hopefully the things work out well in the end. dominic calvert—lewin scored the only goal in everton*s victory over west ham, their first game since the club's chairman, bill kenwright, passed away. calvert—lewin had described kenwright, who died last monday, as a great man. thoughts echoed by the everton manager, sean dyche. yeah, very tough week for different reasons. very sad week in many, many ways for many people. but like i said before, be fitting today to get a result for the chairman who sadly passed away and his family. yeah.
12:52 am
is the feeling amongst the camp that one was for bill kenwright today? yeah, we didn't we didn't really speak about it and make a sort of deal about it. but i think i think yeah, i think the underlying thing is that there's a lot of players who spent a bit of time here, you know, know the chairman and they're sad as well as i am. when you play thursday—sunday, it's never an easy and easy schedule. so we've got it. we're really pleased. we've got it. we've won some games after we've come back and ourselves today. we've lost some of our thursday on a sunday after coming back. today was really tight and in the main we've been pretty good at the london stadium. so disappointing result to take. in the day's other matches. there was another good win for aston villa, who beat luton while brighton and fulham drew on the south coast. in the scottish premiership, rangers made the most of leaders celtic dropping points yesterday with a very late two one win over hearts to close the gap on celtic to now five points. both rangers goals were in injury time earlier kilmarnock beat aberdeen two nil in france. allianz league match against marseille had to be postponed
12:53 am
after their team bus was pelted with stones as it entered the stade velodrome. lions manager fabio grosso was injured during the incident. marseille officials issued a statement saying the club wishes a speedy recovery to the lyon coach fabio grosso and strongly condemns this violent behaviour which has no place in the world of football and in society. lyon are bottom of the table. the two sides, though, are big rivals. max verstappen has won a dramatic formula one mexico city grand prix. the red bull driver took the lead at turn one, where ferrari show la claire and verstappen*s team—mate sergio perez collided, taking home favourite perez out of the race. then the race was delayed for 25 minutes at one point after kevin magnussen*s high speed collision. but verstappen kept his cool at the restart to comfortably see off mercedes lewis hamilton for the win. with leclerc finishing third, verstappen has already sealed a third world championship title, while hamilton edges closer to second place in the standings. he's just 20 points off.
12:54 am
perez with three races to go. on to tennis now, and yannick senna's excellent form continued when he beat the top seed daniil medvedev in three sets to win the erste bank open in vienna. the match was a repeat of this month's final in beijing, which the italian world numberfour won. and he started well in vienna by taking a tight first set on the tie—break. nine points to seven. medvedev hit back by taking the second only for sinner to come through the decider six three to win his third atp title in the last three months. i think today was completely different than the last time because i made more volleys there today. he was waiting a little bit more for my play, and then then i had to adapt. and i'm very happy about this. i'm very happy about i handled it especially situation. so yeah, it was a very, very good match today. and finally, peru's kimberly garcia thought that she set the world record in

the women's 20 kilometres walk race at the pan american games. but it was voided after organisers of the largest multi—sport event in the continent said that the times of the race were annulled due to a measuring problem. in santiago's o'higgins park, they blame the association of pan american athletes orathletics, rather, for the mistake. athletes believe the distance they actually completed was more like 17 kilometres. well, that's it for me and the sports team. as always, there is much more on our website and the bbc sport app where you can read more about the cricket world cup and all of the football from all over the world. but that's it for me and the team from all of us here. goodbye. hello there. it's going to stay very unsettled across the uk
12:56 am
as we head through this week with low pressure still very much in charge. so long spells of rain, heavy thundery, downpours, the winds are likely to pick up at times. and we'll also see on wednesday night into thursday, our third named storm of the season storm ciaran named by the met office on sunday. and those rainfall totals are really going to start to stack up again as we head through the next five days. you can see all the blues on our rainfall accumulation chart here. more wet weather for flood stricken areas such as eastern parts of scotland. now low pressure is centred out towards the west of ireland, just sending bands of showers swirling around. it should be a largely dry start to the day across scotland, but it is quite a chilly one and it's still quite breezy for many, particularly towards the channel coast. but the winds are certainly lightning as we head throughout the day. now, the heaviest of the showers on monday will tend to be across northern ireland. we could start to see some localised flooding. maybe as those rainfall totals stack up, we'll see some more heavy showers across west

and wales, the south west of england towards channel coast, just drifting further northwards and eastwards further east, largely dry. and for scotland, the lion's share of the sunshine north of the central belt. but here the air is going to feel chillier. now, on tuesday, again, scotland still a welcome respite from all of that rain. it should stay largely dry and sunny. a few isolated showers in the north. elsewhere out towards the west, we will see some showers and brighter spells and a warm front starts to creep into south west wales and south west england by the end of the day. on tuesday, temperatures again 9 to 15 degrees celsius. now that warm front will track further north, west and eastwards as we head through tuesday night and into wednesday, bringing with it widespread heavy rain and some strong gusty winds as well. and some of that rain in the chillier air across the highlands will be turning to snow. just take a look at that easterly wind piling, all of that rain onshore into aberdeenshire yet again. it's windy out towards the west here. further south, we're expecting some showers, temperatures again, 9 to 15 degrees. but of more concern than the weather on wednesday is going to be the weather on thursday. now, this is storm ciaran. it's a very deep area of low pressure. you can see the tight squeeze on the isobars here.
