despite claims by the palestinian red crescent that they have been told by israel to do so. israel says it has expanded attacks in the gaza strip, hitting a further 600 hamas targets and claiming to have killed dozens of fighters. i'm anna foster in israel. we've been seeing and hearing the continuing bombardment from israel over the gaza strip this morning. around 60 people have been arrested after a large mob, some shouting anti—semitic slogans, stormed an airport in dagestan, in russia. and tributes continue for matthew perry, one of the stars of the hit tv show friends, who's died at the age of 5a.

israel says it has expanded its ground operations in gaza. these are the latest pictures coming in from the israeli defence forces. israel has also expanded its air operation and there has been more intense bombing of gaza with israel saying it has hit a further six hundred hamas targets. these are live pictures overlooking gaza city where we've been seeing explosions and plumes of smoke rising just in the last few minutes. the idf said dozens of hamas fighters barricaded in buildings and tunnels had been killed overnight. israeli air strikes hit areas near the al-quds hospital in northern gaza which israel has told doctors to evacuate. live now to anna foster who is in southern israel close to the border with

gaza. let me tell you, luxmy, a little bit more about what we have seeing and hearing here overnight and this morning as well. even as i'm talking, people continue to hear the sound of israeli artillery, we are very close to an israeli artillery point which is continuing to fire across into gaza and we have seen an increased amount of plumes of black and grey smoke on the gaza skyline, even more than we have done in the last couple of days, when israel really stepped up their ground operation into gaza, moving infantry troops inside, moving artillery as well, and we're hearing in the last hour or so from inside gaza that israeli tanks have potentially been seen at a key point in the strip south of gaza city. we will remember that civilians have been moved into the south of gaza, and it appears that israeli tanks are possibly in a position where they are able to encircled gaza city and we wait to hear more detail on that but these

pictures that you can see really show you inside gaza city, you can see the level of destruction, we can see the level of destruction, we can see it here, it is a beautiful, clear morning here in southern israel and as we look across, those pictures that you are seeing now of the skyline in gaza you can see the scars of the intensive bombardment that has been going on for more than three weeks now, since those devastating attacks by hamas here in southern israel on 7th october. we are also hearing that the civilian situation, in gaza, is becoming increasingly difficult for the people who are trapped inside there and are unable to leave. my colleague our correspondent wyre davies has the latest. al-quds hospital in the heart of gaza city. around 14,000 internally displaced people who have fled from their homes to escape relentless israeli bombing are said to be sheltering in the grounds here. israel has accused hamas of deliberately basing itself near or even within public

buildings like hospitals. and that's why it is targeting areas around the hospital. the shelling in recent days has been intense. israel has urged these people to leave, to flee south to what it says is relative safety. but for 400 patients inside the hospital, many of them in intensive care units, that is an impossible demand, say doctors and health officials. translation: we have received various warnings today, - the first was through a phone call from the palestinian red crescent which the israeli army called to demand the evacuation of all patients and workers as well as those residing in the hospital to the south of gaza. they mentioned that this area is going to be a military zone, that there will be clashes and the area will be dangerous and that we have to evacuate quickly. desperate people take desperate actions, raiding un stores for flour and other basics.

israel has repeatedly questioned the scale of the crisis in gaza, saying there is no shortage of food and that supplies of basics like water are adequate. but the reality on the ground tells a different story. around 30 trucks carrying basic aid was allowed into gaza yesterday through the border with egypt, an improvement, but nowhere near the hundreds of trucks that are needed each day, say aid agencies. israel in effect controls and restricts what gets into gaza, and that, say some, has dire consequences. the blockade on food and gasoline, that itself could be a war crime, could be a crime against humanity, and even a genocide if the intention was to destroy the people in gaza. israel's priority is its military objective, to crush hamas as a fighting force, and that means pummelling hamas targets, sending in tanks and troops on the ground into gaza, where they remain.
9:06 am
stage two of this offensive, the land incursion, is well under way. but there are other considerations for israel. the plight of more than 220 hostages held by hamas, israelis and internationals, is impossible for the government to ignore. the voices of the families calling for the government to focus on their return are increasingly loud. i am just a granddaughter who's begging to get her grandma back home. and if i will stop believing, if i will stop hoping, then there is no reason to wake up in the morning, and i need to have this hope. so, even though i might have a different opinion with the government or with the authorities, i have to believe that they are doing their best. israel wants the world to remember why it says the unprecedented assault on gaza has to happen. each day more victims from 7th october are buried,

after moo people were killed inside israel by hamas gunmen who had breached the borderfence. never again, says israel, whatever the cost. wyre davies, bbc news, jerusalem. live now to our correspondent wyre davies injerusalem. and on the humanitarian aid situation, there were suggestions like last night that there might be an expansion of aid that is allowed into my do we know what is happening with that? ho. into my do we know what is happening with that? ., ., , , ., with that? no, there has been no secifics with that? no, there has been no specifics from _ with that? no, there has been no specifics from the _ with that? no, there has been no specifics from the israeli - with that? no, there has been no specifics from the israeli side, i specifics from the israeli side, there was a mention yesterday that israel might try to work towards allowing more aid in. on sunday there were about 30 trucks allowed in through the rafah crossing, that is a little bit more than we have seen on previous days, the average has been about 18 or 20 trucks but it is far short of what the aid agencies and the united nations say are needed, they say they are 100
9:08 am
trucks or more needed each day, not just with the basics of medicine, food and water, and the un says it needs fuel to run some of its hospital equipment and the water desalination plants, so there is a discrepancy in what is coming in and what is actually needed, but the israelis won't stop fighting to allow the creation of a humanitarian corridor. but israel is coming under considerable pressure, including from some of its allies, to open up or to make the humanitarian situation little bit better than it is at the minute. find situation little bit better than it is at the minute.— situation little bit better than it is at the minute. * ., ., is at the minute. and what about the israel defence _ is at the minute. and what about the israel defence forces, _ is at the minute. and what about the israel defence forces, they - is at the minute. and what about the israel defence forces, they normallyj israel defence forces, they normally do a morning operational update letting people know how things are going, what have they had to say? yeah, i think there have been some significant military develop manceau overnight, this ground offensive, which is phase two of the military operation, remember, for two or three weeks we had almost exclusive bombardment from tanks outside gaza and from the air pummelling

positions in gaza, tunnels, specific hamas commanders, according to israel, and in the last couple of days that has moved to a ground offensive and we've now got the spectre of israeli tanks and israeli soldiers inside gaza and staying inside gaza. there have been some suggestions this morning that tanks have been seen near or around a critical road junction in central gaza, the inference there could be that israel is slowly but surely moving into gaza, getting ready to encircled some of the major population areas, where this battle would again enter a new phase. but certainly this morning there is considerable evidence of israeli tanks within gaza, the military have said that, they have said they have stepped up their campaign in gaza, they have engaged what they say are hamas terrorists within gaza itself. the problem there from a humanitarian perspective is, does that now prohibit people in northern gaza, civilians who still haven't fled south, does that. moving south
9:10 am
because there are only two roads between gaza city and the area below which israel has told people to flee. if there was two roads are not possible, then that would potentially mean that tens of thousands of people are now trapped in northern gaza. mere thousands of people are now trapped in northern gaza.— in northern gaza. wyre davies, live from jerusalem. — in northern gaza. wyre davies, live from jerusalem, thank _ in northern gaza. wyre davies, live from jerusalem, thank you. - in northern gaza. wyre davies, live from jerusalem, thank you. as - in northern gaza. wyre davies, live from jerusalem, thank you. as we | from jerusalem, thank you. as we continue to watch those live pictures, you can really see the destruction on the gaza skyline. my colleague rushdi abualouf is following developments in southern gaza. israeli tanks control... and now the people in gaza city and the north, they don't have access in and out of that area, so, gaza is divided, the road which links gaza, the eastern
9:11 am
border with israel, with the sea, so the tanks have moved, we are still not sure from where, from east to west, but tanks reach the middle, the tyler harding road is in the middle, it is the main road which links gaza from the very far north to the far south. so now in the middle tanks are controlling this road and it is closed. and it means divided. so, this is about looking kilometre advance, incursion, this is the biggest since 2008, when israel did... this corridor or this line. this is the second time since 2008. when you ask palestinians even in this so—called safe area, it is not really safe because in the last 20 days, a third of the israeli, almost a third of the israeli airstrikes are targeting the south, and about 40% of those who were
9:12 am
killed in the last couple of weeks were from the south. so, israel is not directing people to go to the safe area and not targeting this area. we noticed since yesterday that there is less airstrikes in this area, more coming from egypt so it seems that israel wants to focus the operation in the north and gaza city where now they have tanks from four different directions and they want to be able to flee here, and we understand that egypt is going to allow more aid and medical supplies into this area. but we have to know that still over 600,000 people are still in that area that is now under the total cut from the entire gaza strip, within gaza city and the north, in four different areas in the north. and that part of hamas,
9:13 am
was from the sea, hamas was sending troops from the sea to israeli beach there. so, the activity on the beach and on the land from tanks and on the sky from aeroplanes, israel was fighting all the time. so, in the sea, israel is in full control of the sea, they have military ships that, they shelled the area. and we understand, still not verified but some people believe that this incursion came from the sea, not from the east, not from the border. so, tanks were somehow deployed on the beach and then they came in the beach, advanced four kilometres into salahaddin road and now they are blocking the road. so israel is using land, sea and ground. rushdi
