come to bbc news. we will have more of an escalating situation in gaza in just a few minutes. but let's start with that breaking news — that hamas has released a video, appearing to show three israeli women being held hostage. the bbc is not showing the video, which has been described as *distressing'. israel's prime minister, benjamin netanyahu described the video as *cruel psychological propaganda', and said his government was doing it all it could to bring hostages home. worth reminding people before we go to lyse doucet injerusalem — that the uk — us and many other western governments have proscribed hamas as a terrorist organisation. live now to our chief international correspodnent, lyse doucet injerusalem. a really disturbing development that is bound to up the pressure on benjamin netanyahu?- is bound to up the pressure on benjamin netanyahu? already huge ressure on benjamin netanyahu? already huge pressure on the _ benjamin netanyahu? already huge pressure on the israeli _ benjamin netanyahu? already huge pressure on the israeli prime - pressure on the israeli prime minister, benjamin netanyahu who has repeatedly assured the families of the hostages and those still missing

somewhere that he will do everything possible to bring them home. he said that he has two priorities, israel has two priorities, and that is to destroy hamas and to bring them home. well, with the release of this distressing video of three women, the second hostage video, so many eyes around the world are on this video now. the prime minister released this statement almost immediately after it emerged. he said in his first statement. the prime minister linking from the beginning hamas and the islamic state. and then he names them...
4:03 pm
he then added,... well, when israel intensified its military activities intensified its military activities in gaza moving into ground operations. there was immediately a statement for the families of the hostages and the messing expressing their agony that this escalation, their agony that this escalation, the expansion of ground operations could endanger the lives of their loved ones well. in the next hour we are expecting the israeli prime minister to give a briefing and to the families, the three families who dash but whose loved ones were in that video. on a day when israel has pressed deeper into the gaza strip with its troops and tanks. let's look at our update from our

correspondence today. after three weeks of attacks from the air, israel says it's significantly expanding its military operations on the ground in gaza. 0vernight, sending more tanks and troops into the palestinian territory, where they remain. the israeli army said it had killed dozens of terrorists. now, new footage showing perhaps how far into gaza israeli armour has reached. an israeli tank firing on a car reportedly near a strategic road junction in central gaza. a military spokesman wouldn't be drawn on specific details. translation: we have expanded our activity. l this is armour activity, inventory activity, offensive activity that is expanding in the gaza strip in order to meet the two goals we received for the war. one, to collapse hamas and the other to bring home the hostages. if israel moves armour into central areas it could cut gaza in two. isolating hamas stronghold in the north but also making

it harder for civilians to escape south. that includes more than 50,000 internally displaced people who have fled from their shell damaged homes to the grounds of al shifa hospital in the heart of gaza city. israel has accused hamas of deliberately basing itself near or even within public buildings like hospitals. and that is why it is targeting areas around the hospital. these people have been previously urged by israel to leave and head south. but with more than 700 injured patients, that is an impossible demand. translation: threats do not frighten the people of gaza i because we are strong people. we were born to drinking salty water, now there is no water and we drink salty water. but we are steadfast on this land. we are not moving. desperate people take desperate measures.

raiding un stores for flour or and other bases. around 30 trucks carrying basic aid were allowed into gaza yesterday through the border with egypt, but nowhere near the hundreds of trucks that are needed each day, say aid agencies. and there are other considerations for israel. the plight of more than 220 hostages held by hamas, israelis and internationals, is impossible for the government to ignore. the voices of the families calling for the government to focus on their return are increasingly loud. i am just a granddaughter begging to get her grandma back home. and if i will stop believing, if i will stop hoping, then there is nothing, no reason to wake up in the morning. i need to have this hope. so, even though i might have a different opinion with the government, i have to believe they are doing their best. many of the victims of the brutal hamas incursion on october the 7th were young people at a music festival in the south. among them was a 22—year—old

attacks by hamas on october the 7th which killed at least moo people. my colleague rushdi abu—alouf is following the latest developments from gaza, and he sent this update. it has been intensified. the air strikes within gaza city and the north, israel that has been focusing on this area. a lot less air strikes here in the south, but more increasingly air strikes in gaza city and the north, where israel has been operating from the sea, from the ground and from the air. we understand that tanks has been advancing into the edge of gaza city and cutting the main road, a strategic road that link gaza from far north to far south. this road is about 40, 43 kilometres, and they cut it from the edge of gaza city. tanks were briefly in the area. it's... the communication is very, very difficult here. so getting like easy information from the area about where the tanks are and what's going on in the area
4:09 pm
is very difficult. but i was hearing from an ambulance driver who was taking the... coming from khan yunis into gaza, but not using the key road. he was using the beach road, which is about three kilometeres further west. and he said the road was completely deserted, no movement in and out there. and he was taking this riskjourney because the israelis are keep sending messages to the people, about 700,000 people in that area. they ask them to leave south here in khan yunis. so he said he decided to take the risk and drive all the way from gaza city to khan yunis using the road. the air strike also once again today targeting the area around the al-quds hospital, the hospital that israel has been calling the director of it many times, asking them to leave. he said about 14,000 people are in the hospital, sheltering in the hospital, as well as 100 patients.
4:10 pm
eight of them are connected to the life saving machine. and he said it's almost impossible to move anybody from in and out of the hospital because israel destroyed most of the road that lead to the hospital and about ten buildings around it. we understand that about 20 or trucks were allowed in but we think more as many as 60 might be allowed. you know, the un said we need daily at least 100 trucks to feed. you know, two thirds of the population are in this southern part of gaza city. they are living for about 2k days now, or 23 days without water, without electricity and without proper food. so the the food shortages are severe. we saw hundreds of people queuing in the bakeries to get bread. the fuel in here in the hospital are severely decreased. and they said any minute they could... they have to shut the operation in the hospital.
4:11 pm
so what the people are hoping here is for a sustainable humanitarian corridor from egypt into gaza that allow aid in, but also allow people who are severely injured and the continuous israeli air strikes to be out to egypt for treatment. 0ur our current spend on their calls for her humanitarian corridor in the midst of what humanitarians have described the many, many days as a humanitarian catastrophe. in that rising death toll as we have been reporting, the latest death toll is now 8000. so many of the dead and the wind at our children. the population of gaza is said to be one of the youngest in the world, nearly half of the 2.2 million residents are below the age of 18. joining me now is is jason lee from save the children.

4:17 pm
we don't know anything about the conditions and duress under which it was filmed but the three women appear it's hard of course to draw any conclusions on the basis of one short video and this as we mentioned is one still. they seem to be in reasonable health with no obvious signs of injury. all we can say and this is a small bit of hope for the families that they know, three families that they know, three families now know that their loved ones are alive. it is a proof of life but it's a distressing proof of life but it's a distressing proof of life to see them in such traumatic conditions, calling on the israeli to do much more to bring them home. around the world and across the united kingdom, this is bbc news. let's ta ke let's take a look now at some of the other stories making news this hour. at least 13 people were killed

with jerusalem with are live with bbc news. we are alive withjerusalem with continued special coverage on the israel gaza war. it is day 24. as you have been hearing today, it is our top story this hour. hamas's military wing has released a new video which shows three israeli women being held hostage. 0ne three israeli women being held hostage. one of them, in a statement and we can't say what the conditions were under which this was recorded but obviously, they are hostages. she was fiercely critical of the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu and demands to be released immediately and calls for a ceasefire. mr netanyahu immediately described the video is cruel psychological propaganda. shortly after it was released i spoke to an ambassador who is a senior adviser to the israeli prime minister. he gave us this reaction to the video. the only good thing about this video is that we have visual proof that these three women are alive and that

is a good thing. we don't know about the other 239. we are watching closely, we hope they are all well but we don't know that for a fact. as we reported on the bbc, the number two —— numbers of the hostages are still going up. i am worried that is not the final number. the final number could still rise. * , ., number. the final number could still rise. * , . . , number. the final number could still rise. * ~ ., number. the final number could still rise. ~ ., , rise. but israel as you know is cominu rise. but israel as you know is coming under— rise. but israel as you know is coming under criticism - rise. but israel as you know is coming under criticism most l rise. but israel as you know is| coming under criticism most of rise. but israel as you know is - coming under criticism most of all from the families who feared that the intensification of the ground operations could put the lives of the hostages at risk. this is something that you are well aware of. fit something that you are well aware of. . ., , * something that you are well aware of. , ~ of. of course. and, obviously, the hostaue of. of course. and, obviously, the hostage families, _ of. of course. and, obviously, the hostage families, our _ of. of course. and, obviously, the hostage families, our hearts - of. of course. and, obviously, the hostage families, our hearts go i of. of course. and, obviously, the| hostage families, our hearts go out for them, you have to feel for them and stand by them. i can't even imagine the pain that they have and they are experiencing day in and day out. i can say the following,
4:21 pm
though, we don't believe that hamas is going to release these hostages because certainly, hamas are becoming boy scout, humanitarian organisation. that is not hamas. hamas is a brutal extreme terrorist organisation. we have seen the violence they are capable of. we have experienced it first—hand, the burning of babies, the murder of those young people at music festival. the killing of children in front of parents and parents in front of parents and parents in front of parents and parents in front of children. the rapes, the beheadings. we have no illusions about hamas. hamas will only release hostages if they are under pressure. and we believe that by adding pressure against hamas, military pressure against hamas, military pressure and making them feel the pain, that is the best way to expedite hostage release. at the
4:22 pm
same time, international pressure on their diplomatic allies, you put that together, military pressure on hamas machine and at the same time the diplomatic pressure from their allies, we think that is the recipe to expedite the release of hostages. we know that the negotiations around hostage release are highly sensitive and you wouldn't want to compromise them in any way. but is it your understanding that they are continuing in places like the gulf state of qatar where some of the hamas political leaders are based? there are even reports on american media today that at least one israeli official could havejoined those talks? can you confirm any of this? i those talks? can you confirm any of this? .. ., _, those talks? can you confirm any of this? ., _, ., , ., those talks? can you confirm any of this? ., ., , ., ., this? i cannot confirm any of that. i this? i cannot confirm any of that. i apologise- _ this? i cannot confirm any of that. iapologise- for— this? i cannot confirm any of that. i apologise. for obvious _ this? i cannot confirm any of that. i apologise. for obvious reasons. | this? i cannot confirm any of that. | i apologise. for obvious reasons. i iapologise. for obvious reasons. i can say that the work to get hostages released is ongoing and we believe that the military pressure and diplomatic pressure is the way to it done. flan

4:24 pm
reinstate it here for you. we will destroy hamas's military mystery and dismantle the political structure of their rule in gaza. those are the goals of this operation together with getting the hostages out. concern is again being expressed today by the warnings of the people in the north of the gaza strip to leave the area including people running hospitals, hospitals are being told to evacuate. they are telling us and i am sure that they have told israel that they simply cannot evacuate with so many children, infants in incubators, very ill people in beds. this is something that israel is seeking that everyone is —— must leave the north even as the wto says it's a death sentence. big mac festival, we have been encouraging people to leave, to get out of a war zone, it sensible to get out of the situation
4:25 pm
and not be caught up in a war zone. hundreds of thousands are taken the advice and not —— and move south. not everyone has taken the advice and we are aware of that. that's why we will be as careful as we can to distinguish between innocent civilians and the hamas terrorist. the ambassador who is now a senior adviser to the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu. we are expecting in the next hour for the israeli prime minister to brief the press here on this latest hostage video. just released by hamas's military wing. we are also expecting the three families who must have watched with alarm but also with some relief that their family members are alive but in such distressing circumstances. we continue to bring all the latest developments but for now from us in jerusalem we will say goodbye in hand you back to london.

hello. the weather shows little sign of calming down over the next few days. in fact, quite the reverse. a named storm, storm ciaran, named by the met office, likely to affect the uk through wednesday night into thursday. the risk of damaging winds, particularly in the south, but also widespread, unwanted heavy rain. but in the shorter term, a met office amber warning has been issued for southeastern parts of northern ireland. rain overnight and into the first part of tomorrow could well cause further flooding and disruption. rain actually across those eastern and southeastern parts of northern ireland through the rest of today. some patches of rain across parts of northern england. quite a few showers across wales, the south west, some heavier rain into south east england. a lot of scotland will be dry, just the odd shower up towards the north. and then as we head through this evening and tonight, well, that rain really sets in across southern parts of northern ireland with that risk of flooding. some outbreaks of showery rain elsewhere. largely clear skies, though, across scotland, and in the highlands some spots

will drop to freezing or a touch below. contrast that with nine or ten degrees in the south west of england and the channel islands. for tomorrow, one band of cloud and showery rain across northern ireland, parts of northern england, into east anglia. to the south of that, a slice of sunshine, just one or two showers and then a band of heavy rain works back into the south west of england later in the day. all the while, scotland largely dry, temperatures of 8 to 15 degrees. through tuesday night into wednesday this frontal system will push its way northwards and eastwards. this one is going to bring some heavy rain, perhaps some snow for a time, over high ground in northern scotland, but only briefly. it will turn windy around some western coasts and also in the north of scotland. temperatures north to south, generally between eight and 14 degrees. and then, as we move through wednesday night into thursday, it's this deep area of low pressure that brings cause for concern. this is storm ciaran. still some uncertainty about the exact track of this low, but many areas are going to see heavy rain bringing the renewed

threat of flooding, and it is going to be windy. at this stage it looks like the strongest winds will be in south wales and southern england. inland spots could see gusts of 50 to maybe 60 miles per hour. but some southern coasts of england, and more especially the channel islands, could see wind gusts of 80 to possibly 90 miles per hour.
