hello again. emma hayes will be the new head coach of the us national women's team — confirming an appointment that appeared likely once she'd revealed she was leaving chelsea at the end of their season. hayes will become the highest paid coach in women's football and says it's "a huge honour to be given the opportunity to coach the most incredible team in world football history". jo currie has more. leader, trailblazer and above all, a winner. it will be chelsea's name in history. emma hayes is the most successful female coach in this country. with chelsea she's won everything there is to win domestically. she has led chelsea to the fa cup. and now she's taking on the biggestjob in the world, becoming head coach of the usa. i mean, she's a massive figure, you know, legendary coach in terms of what she's achieved. and i think she can drive standards just from the aura and the presence that she has and the respect level she has

from so many players and coaches within england, but also further afield and abroad as well. itjust shows us kind of the iconic status that she has. hayes' reign at chelsea is unrivalled, winning 13 trophies in 11 years, including the treble in 2021, the year she guided them to the champions league final. she will need to bring plenty of that winning magic to her new role. the usa has always been the dominant force in women's football. four time world and olympic champions. but after being knocked out of this summer's world cup in the round of 16, they're in need of a rebuild and at a time when scrutiny has never been higher. the rise of the european teams has changed the dynamic around the national teams and women's football. and i think that people kept talking about the us getting caught up. they're getting caught up. they've now been caught up and probably overtaken. so i think the challenge

for them is to get back to that number one spot. hayes is writing her own exit from chelsea. she'll leave at the end of this season in may. it'll then be a quick turnaround to lead the us to this summer's olympic games in paris. jo currie, bbc news. well for now hayes remains in charge of chelsea and she'll be in the dugout on wednesday as her side face real madrid in their opening group match of the champions league. they've never won the competition with hayes saying doing so in herfinal season would be a �*fairytale'. they'll have to get past two teams that won handsomely on tuesday. barcelona and lyon are the last two winners of the champions league with the holders barcelona beating benfica 5—0 and lyon hitting nine to win at slavia prague. there were wins too for eintracht frankfurt and brann. liverpool's luis diaz has been reunited with his father — four days after luis manuel diaz was released by kidnappers in colombia. both the forward's parents were taken by a guerrilla group and while diaz's mother was quickly released. his father was held for 12 days. colombian police have arrested

four individuals connected with the kidnapping. diaz stayed with his club throughout his father's abduction but has returned to colombia for the internatoinal break. a man has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter over the death of ice hockey player adam johnson whose neck was cut during a match in the uk's elite league. the nottingham panthers player was injured by a skate in a game against sheffield steelers last month and was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital. fans and mourners paid tribute to the 29—year—old at the nottingham arena a week on from his death which south yorkshire police said a postmortem had confirmed happened as a result of a fatal neck injury. the panthers have yet to play since, but will return to the ice for an adam johnson memorial game on saturday. well, south yorkshire police say the man they've arrested remains in custody. they released a statement today from detective chief superintendent bex horsfall, which i can share with you now. she says we've been carrying out extensive inquiries to piece together the events which led to the loss of adam in these

but the defeat is his first since the wimbledon final after 19 straight wins. well, stefanos tsitsipas apologised to fans after he was booed off court in turin. he lasted just three games against holgar rune before retiring hurt — to the disappointment of the crowd. tsitsipas — who has since pulled out of the tournament — said he had been given the green light to play by doctors. i've got it that i wasn't able to finish the match. and it's a shame also. not to give that spot to someone else to at least try and do something with it. unfortunately, i felt terrible on the court and i did what i could do in the best possible way to be ready and fit for this match, but it didn't work out for me. world heavyweight champion oleksandr usyk says he wants to organise a homecoming fight in kyiv once ukraine's war with russia is over. usyk is expected to face fellow world champion tyson fury in february — with the winner becoming the first undisputed world heavyweight champion since lennox lewis in 1999.

hello. although our fairly changeable, unsettled spell of autumn weather continues through the remainder of the week, there will be some windows of drier weather, particularly on wednesday, across the southern half of the uk. so bright and breezy but cloudy and damp with outbreaks of rain at times across northern areas. all down to the fact that we've got a ridge of high pressure building in from the south, but low pressure with a couple of weather fronts drifting, particularly across parts of scotland. so through the day, wednesday, then we start with the cloud and the rain for much of central southern scotland, northern ireland, too. could even be a little bit of snow across the highest ground, the grampians highland as well. all sunshine though works for the northern isles towards caithness and sutherland into aberdeenshire later on in the day. temperatures here around 7 to 9 further south across england

and wales should be dry and bright through much of the day. temperatures here 12 or 13 degrees, but we've still got this cloudier zone in between. any of that rain tending to fizzle away overnight into thursday. but the next area of rain starts to arrive from the south—west early on thursday. it's going to be quite a cold night. it could be a touch of frost, particularly across parts of scotland with the lighter winds and the clearing skies. right, through thursday then, a couple of areas of low pressure, this one bringing some rain to parts of southern england, another one moving into northern ireland, wales, as well later in the day. should stay mostly dry for parts of eastern scotland, north—east england too, and temperatures range between around about 8 to 12 for most of us. but we're in that colder air still up towards the northern isles, but there'll be some sunshine. moving through thursday night into friday and the front�*s clear away for a time. we've got an area of high pressure trying to nudge in from the south. so that means friday is probably our driest and brightest day of the week for most places. could be the odd shower around, but the cloud could well increase from the south—west

ahead of the next area of low pressure, bringing some rain. so temperatures on friday around 7 to 12 degrees for most of us. still rather cool turns milder into the weekend, but it turns wetter and windier, too. low pressure moving in, lots of isobars on the map. so rain, but you can see the orange colours flooding across the uk. that shows that that much milder air is on the way. it's going be quite breezy with the breeze coming in from a south—westerly direction. so the next few days then we have got some rain around, particularly on thursday, drier as we head into friday for most of us. but then temperatures on the rise but wet and windy for the weekend. bye— bye.
