under way between our openai ceo sam altman and members of the company's board, according to bloomberg news. meanwhile, microsoft has offered to match the pay of any staff who join it from openai, the company known for creating chatgpt. the firm has been in crisis ever since its high profile ceo sam altmann was sacked from the job on friday after the ousting, microsoft then offered altman a job to head a new ai research team. the ousting has caused an uproar at openai with almost every staff member threatening to leave unless altman is reinstated. it is still unclear whether altman will ultimately join microsoft. very good to see you. it is hard to keep track of all of the twists and turns of the story. where do things start right now would sam altman? is he really in talks to go back to openai? it
3:46 am
has been a tumultuous five days to say the least. where things stand as of now, old man, the interim ceo and at least one board member, what we understand to be adam d'angelo are in heated discussions, "intense discussions" as the company put it in an internal memo early on monday that are still ongoing. the plan from what we understand is that they want things to be wrapped up, so people can go back to the thanksgiving holiday weekend with some assurance of where the company stands. now, some of the main points out of this negotiations, we know that altman would return as ceo if things go as planned, and that in at least one scenario, altman would be director of what they would call a transitional board of sorts. now, as we know, the board was
3:47 am
the one that ousted altman in the one that ousted altman in the first place. it is unclear if board members are set to resign as part of any of these negotiations, which remain extremely tenuous, and the company made that clear to employees. also calling them to actually get back to work. what we learned today is that they are facing a mass exodus from over 700 employees that have pledged their allegiance to altman if he goes to microsoft as he said he would, they would follow, and microsoft had been right there waiting in the wind is to accept them also. it is still a very uncertain situation.— still a very uncertain situation. ~ ., ., , situation. do we know at this oint, it situation. do we know at this point. it is — situation. do we know at this point, it is still— situation. do we know at this point, it is still unclear - situation. do we know at this point, it is still unclear what | point, it is still unclear what led to this, what led the board to say sam altman should not be at openai anymore? that to say sam altman should not be at openai anymore?— at openai anymore? that is at the core of _ at openai anymore? that is at the core of what _ at openai anymore? that is at the core of what these - at openai anymore? that is at the core of what these past. the core of what these past five days have been, just this uncertainty of what exactly the board was so rift about, when they put out that statement on
3:48 am
friday. it was very opaque. there is no clear indication over what had not been candid about. they did not say what, from what we understand and our reporting shows, part of the rift was due to how sam altman was not in the same page as some of the board members on aia safety. they felt perhaps he was going a bit too fast on the commercialfront, all he was going a bit too fast on the commercial front, all of the commercial front, all of the business opportunities coming up and perhaps not thinking about the implications to ai responsibility and safety, and we are not totally sure what exactly was in the works that became so objectionable to the board. we understand that at least one board member was pretty crucial in getting the others to come around, but as we know it, none of them have resigned. but the
3:49 am
fact that altman and at least one board member are in talks as a major step from where we were on friday. before that they were not even engaging with the former ceo.- they were not even engaging with the former ceo. jackie, it is really interesting, _ with the former ceo. jackie, it is really interesting, just - with the former ceo. jackie, it is really interesting, just one i is really interesting, just one more quick question for you. thisjust goes to more quick question for you. this just goes to show how important this technology really is at this moment, how many people are buying for sam altman and openai staff. it is an incredible moment and we're at the year mark from when chatgpt was launched last year which sparked this massive wave of notjust commercial and of not just commercial and consumer use of notjust commercial and consumer use in artificial intelligence, generative ai making its way into tools, but also a lot of money going into this field. billions of dollars. microsoft alone investing over $13 billion in openai, and then you have a wave of other competitors. so it means a lot, given that they are the leading player but also they were the ambassador to lawmakers —— lawmakers in washington when preaching about
3:50 am
how ai could really take us to the next level as a society, but also kind of be the face of what ai risks could be, and the fact that that ambassador is now working for microsoft or could be puts the situation on uncertain terms at the moment. the story certainly isn't over yet. thank you forjoining us. we will bring you more now on our top story this hour. israel's government has voted to approve a deal securing the release of dozens of israeli hostages held inside gaza. the gulf state of qatar has now issued a statement in the past few minutes confirming this agreement. qatar was a major broker in these negotiations. israeli media is reporting the agreement involves the exchange of hostages being held by the organisation for palestinian detainees in israeli jails. israel's prime minister's office has said the deal includes the release of 50
3:51 am
hostages over four days. during the four days there will be a pause in fighting and those released include 30 kidnapped children, eight mothers and 12 more women, and the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu has said his war effort against hamas would continue even after any hostage release. let's bring our guests back you have been following this story with us. an assistant professor at stonehill college and a world editor for axe eos. stonehill college and a world editorfor axe eos. great to have you both back. i want to start with you lauren, because we are seeing are of course that in return for these hostages being released that some palestinian detainees would be released as well. do we know anything about who these detainees are?- we know anything about who these detainees are? what we know is they — these detainees are? what we know is they will _ these detainees are? what we know is they will primarily - these detainees are? what we know is they will primarily be l know is they will primarily be women and children. in terms of how many, israeli officials and also some of our sources have indicated it will be around 150
3:52 am
for the first 50 hostages that are released in gaza, and then obviously more hostages may be released from gaza as well. but in terms of exactly who they are, that is still a big question. we are expecting the israeli government to release the names within the next 2a hours. because there is a process in which israelis can appeal any prisoners who are in that list. then we do know that the individuals who will be released from israel no israel has indicated or stressed that none of those have been convicted or are involved in the killing of israelis. so in terms of who exactly they are and where exactly and in which prisons they are currently being held, that is still unclear that we are expecting to know more of those details in the next 2a hours. we

has voted to approve a deal on tuesday that secures the release of some of the hostages held by hamas. that comes after six weeks of fighting and intense negotiations between the us, qatar, israeli is of course and the international red cross as part of this agreement, we understand those released include 30 kidnapped children, eight mothers and 12 more women, and we know that the israeli prime minister has said after this agreement, the fighting will continue, so we will stay across the latest as we look at these pictures of gaza in the morning. thank you for watching bbc news. stay with us. hello. some changes in the feel of our weather over the next few days. tuesday brought temperatures generally around the average for the time of year. it was a little bit chilly in some locations. for wednesday, westerly winds introducing milder air and double digit temperatures for the majority. but then the end of the week will bring northerly winds and something colder. in the short term, wednesday morning brings high pressure to the south of us, low

pressure to the north. and this frontal system between this warm front here and this cold front here, a wedge of warm or at least mild air. within that wedge of mild air, a lot of cloud, that cloud producing some rain at times, particularly across hills in the north and the west. that rain enhanced by a weather front in the north of scotland. pretty cloudy for northern ireland, northern england, north wales, the odd spot of rain. further south and east, a few brighter glimpses on what will be a breezy day, in fact, a windy one across the northern half of the uk. temperatures, though, in double digits forjust about all of us broadly 11—14 celsius. now, as we head through wednesday night, we will see this frontal system starting to journey southwards, outbreaks of rain with that. ahead of it, a lot of cloud, it is going to be very mild. behind that frontal system, we will just start to introduce something a little bit colder. it will turn increasingly
3:57 am
windy, too, across the north of scotland. so here's our weather front for thursday. it'll be moving southwards. it's a cold front you'll notice, that means the air behind it is going to be turning colder. so here's ourfrontal system — this is the dividing line ahead of it. a lot of cloud through the day on thursday. behind the weather front, sunny spells and showers. some of those showers turning wintry over high ground in northern scotland. gales developing in the far north here. it really will feel cold by the end of the afternoon. furthersouth, holding on to something milder. but by friday, all of us into these northerly winds, some showers which will be wintry, especially over higher ground in the north, perhaps even to lower levels in the far north for a time. some decent spells of sunshine, still 11 celsius in cardiff and plymouth, but most places feeling colder than that. in fact, when we factor in the strength of the wind, it will feel subzero for some parts of eastern and northeastern scotland. into the weekend, we stick with a chilly feel. there will be quite a lot of dry weather, though, and some spells of sunshine. bye for now.
