this is bbc news. the headlines: israeli tanks and armoured vehicles begin rolling out of gaza as a temporary ceasefire takes effect. some israeli hostages and palestinian prisoners are due to be released injust 90 minutes from now. in south africa convicted murderer oscar pistorius is granted parole. the former olympic runner will be released in january. 60 lorries carrying medical supplies, fuel and food have made their way into gaza from egypt, as a four—day pause in fighting by israel and hamas comes into effect. under the deal, which has
12:31 pm
been mediated by qatar, 13 israeli hostages are due to be released later today, with 50 being released over the four days. as part of the agreement, israel will release 150 palestinian prisoners. sir stephen o'brien is a former un under—secretary—general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator. hejoins me now. tell us what has been happening at the border and how difficult it is been for some of these eight trucks to get through. how long they have been there, how long the jets were. you are in a hot part of the world so it has been a long, arduous time for people to be waiting but there has been plenty of time for assessments by the professionals, not least for the unh wr, to which i used to run, which has been really active in making sure there is a

real assessment for the people, particularly in south casa, where they have been gathering to have the humanitarian supplies distributed to them to help them survive and maintain some kind of ability to give them medical help. but maintain some kind of ability to give them medical help. but what i imauine, if give them medical help. but what i imagine, if you're _ give them medical help. but what i imagine, if you're watching - give them medical help. but what i imagine, if you're watching around| imagine, if you're watching around the world and we know how desperately this aid needed, people might be visualising a constant stream of trucks with aid, but that is not happening, is it? it is stream of trucks with aid, but that is not happening, is it?— is not happening, is it? it is to a decree is not happening, is it? it is to a degree because _ is not happening, is it? it is to a degree because they _ is not happening, is it? it is to a degree because they will- is not happening, is it? it is to a degree because they will have i is not happening, is it? it is to a . degree because they will have been lined up waiting outside the rafah crossing, but as part of the deal which the qataris have negotiated, there will have to be strict monitoring because there has to be the assurance that nothing is coming in on those trucks however well they have been supervised with medical supplies, blankets, shelters, fuel, whatever that it doesn't contain other things which, as part of the deal, the israelis are insisting

12:36 pm
and where they gather the people and how those transfers will take place so there is no danger of people from opposing sides coming into contact, there has to be that barrier and security because, as you say, we are dealing with people who will be extraordinarily frightened and traumatised. there will be the sense of relief, but at the same time guilt that they're to leave behind their close loved ones, their men folk will be particularly the ones they are leaving behind, and there may be going into a situation which however much their families are looking forward to receiving them back, they may not know who has survived and not survived the terrible events of the 7th of october. they may be facing further 0ctober. they may be facing further trauma as they learned the fates of the people who they were with at the time when they were taken into gaza. it will be extremely important that

the idf has said palestinians will not be allowed to move from south to north gaza during the truce. there are a number of videos circulating on social media that appear to show palestinians being shot at as they try to head from the south of gaza to the north of the strip. in some there are large crowds running from bursts of gunfire. at least one man is reported to have been shot dead and several others seriously wounded. the israeli military has said it is looking into the reports. the israeli military has posted a message on x, formerly known as twitter, to coincide with the start of the ceasefire. it is read in arabic, with english subtitles , and is intended for the civilians in gaza. translation: to the residents of gaza, the war is not over. . the humanitarian pause is temporary. and the northern gaza area is a dangerous war zone, it is forbidden to be there. for your sake and your safety, you have to stay in the humanitarian zone located in the south of gaza. do not head to northern gaza. you can move from the north to

12:56 pm
the turn to colder weather today is because we've got a massive area of low pressure to the east of us, high pressure to the west and so northerly winds developing right across the country. early light rain or drizzle becoming confined towards the far south—west. still a bit more cloudy, still on the milder side of things to the end of the day, but for the rest of the country more sunshine developing through this afternoon. showers quite frequent down the eastern coast. where the winds will be strongest, 40,50, 60mph gusts. that will have an impact on the way things feel. it is going to be a chilly afternoon. temperatures, in fact, for some of the south, actually drop through the day rather than rise with many in mid—single figures. add on the effects of the wind, it will feel closer to freezing across some parts of eastern scotland and north—east england. it will be a chilly afternoon. winds remain brisk and a cold feel here tonight, but temperatures actually not dropping away as much as it will do through central and western areas. a ridge of high pressure building in and winds fall lighter tonight. one or two mist or fog patches, but the biggest story is just the widespread frost.
12:57 pm
these are your city centre temperatures. in rural areas, particularly north—west england and southern scotland, minus five or minus six to start saturday. but what a cracking day it will be for many of you. a crisp, fresh start with lots of sunshine overhead. down the eastern coasts of england, north and east scotland will still have some showers around, maybe a little bit wintry over the higher ground and still a brisk wind towards those north sea coasts. but away from that, light winds, sunshine. it will feel pleasant, but it will be colder with temperatures for most in mid—single figures. then another cold night as we go into saturday night. a greater chance of some mist and fog patches too and frost for a while, but temperatures rise in the west later as a fairly small area of low pressure starts to push its way in, but it will be enough to spread in cloud more widely. after a chilly start, temperatures could struggle to rise for some. the best of the sunshine in the north and east, and the winds lighter here compared with saturday. but in the west, we'll start to see outbreaks of rain develop and further rain to come on sunday night.
