4:00 pm
in the occupied west bank where 39 more palestinian detainees are expected to be freed from israeli prisons. and in london — a march organised by the campaign against anti—semitism is taking place, to show solidarity with thejewish community in the uk. hello, i'm anna foster live in tel aviv. it's day three of the truce in gaza. live in tel aviv. the israeli army says 14 israeli hostages and three foreigners have now been handed over to the red cross in gaza. we are still waiting for public confirmation of who is on that list. we heard earlierfrom the us, that it had *reason to believe* that for the first time an american—israeli will be part of the deal. a short time ago, we received these pictures of israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu —
4:01 pm
he was visiting idf troops in gaza. as we've been hearing, the hostages are being freed in exchange for a group of palestinian prisoners from israeli jails — also all women and children. 39 of them, we are told, being released today. 39 of them, we are told, being released today. here they are being welcomed back in the west bank on saturday. our correspondent hugo bachega has this report. translation:, our translation: , our brave translation:, our brave combatants are doing everything possible to bring our people home, and ultimately we will bring them home. we have three main objectives, to eradicate hamas, bring back the hostages and ensure the gaza strip will no longer be a threat to the
4:02 pm
state of israel. i will no longer be a threat to the state of israel.— state of israel. i am here with these combatants _ state of israel. i am here with these combatants who - state of israel. i am here with these combatants who have l state of israel. i am here with i these combatants who have said state of israel. i am here with - these combatants who have said a couple of things i will repeat to you. we are going to continue to the end, to the victory, nothing. us and we are convinced that we have the strength, power, the determination to really achieve... reunited after several weeks apart, nine—year—old irish—israeli emily hand and herfather thomas, seen here alongside herfriend hela, who was also released late last night. their agonising wait is finally over. thomas hand initially thought emily had been killed. days after the attack on october the 7th, he gave an emotional interview, saying he was pleased that at least she wasn't in pain. the weirdest thing for a parent to hear that their child is dead... ..and you're relieved.
4:03 pm
when he found out his daughter was, in fact, alive, he campaigned for her to be freed. that has now come true. emily was among 13 israeli hostages and four thai nationals freed by hamas yesterday. the release was delayed for hours after hamas accused israel of breaching terms of their deal, which israel denied. the released captives included 17—year—old noam and his sister alma, i3. their mother was killed in the attack on kibbutz be'eri, and their father is still being held hostage. they had to be confronted with the fact that the mum was murdered by hamas terrorists on october the 7th, so this was quite an ordeal, you know, just coming from captivity, from being kidnapped. under the deal, 39 palestinian prisoners were also released. in the occupied west bank, crowds celebrated as a bus carrying some of them drove through the town of beitunia.
4:04 pm
among those freed were six women. all the others were teenagers. overnight, an israeli operation in the city ofjenin killed at least five palestinians. the israeli army said the raid had targeted a suspect of carrying out a deadly attack three months ago. in gaza, the ceasefire is largely holding, after almost seven weeks of unrelenting israeli bombardment. but the humanitarian crisis continues. translation: the humanitarian situation in northern _ gaza is dangerous. there is no drinking water and no food, so the aid we are sending is important. today we are also sending convoys towards northern gaza and gaza city. this is day three of a four—day pause in hostilities, and many hope for an extension of the quiet.
4:05 pm
hugo bachega, bbc news, jerusalem. we know now that the latest release of hostages, the group is on their way through the rafah crossing, so let's look at live pictures right now, so this is a key location. you can see the lights on there in the darkness, they are awaiting the arrival of a convoy of red cross vehicles, the white vehicles, the red cross's with their logo emblazoned, they tend to fly the flag with the red cross too, and we have seen them come through the crossing as we have done the last couple of days, that is when we know the latest group of hostages have physically left gaza into egypt and they are then handed over to israeli officials who bring them back onto israeli soil. this is the scene live at rafah crossing at the moment. we know that those latest group of
4:06 pm
hostages are on their way through gaza now. so as we continue to monitor those live pictures for you, i also want to show you some pictures from inside gaza today as well. people have been queueing very long queues, particularly forfuel, long queues, particularly for fuel, which long queues, particularly forfuel, which has been very scarce inside the strip. for a very long part of this conflict, israel did not want fuel into gaza because they said it will be requisitioned by hamas and used in operations against israeli forces. but as part of this deal, everyday for four days, four trucks of diesel and cooking gas make their way in. but you have seen long queues there in this one gas station, people took their own containers to be filled up and the queues were so long that they were overwhelmed and they actually had to close that station down altogether. those are scenes we have seen
4:07 pm
repeated for things like fuel and also for food and ethical supplies as well. i spoke a little earlier on that humanitarian situation. just a little earlier, i spoke tojuliette touma who is unwra's director of communications and asked about the aid that has reached the northern gaza strip and why that is a particular issue. it is significant because since the beginning of the war, so, for 50 days, no assistance, no humanitarian assistance has reached that area. this is, we're talking about the northern gaza strip and also gaza city. so it's an important breakthrough that we hope is repeated. also note that unwra continues to manage a number of shelters in those areas that we have not had access to. so we managed to reach those shelters with some much, much needed supplies, and we hope that that will continue.
4:08 pm
and also, juliette, while this ceasefire is happening, we've seen people in gaza, palestinians trying to return in some cases to their homes to see if they're still standing, trying to to get their possessions as well. you know, many people fled, as you know, with nothing at all. how does this ceasefire period help your staff there? what are they able to do in this short pause in fighting? look, i'vejust returned myself from gaza and our colleagues and the people that i met there told me that they really wanted to go and see what's happened to their homes. and, as you know, there's no place like home. people want to go and see what happened, to pick up whatever is left of their belongings. they spoke about books that they just bought and never had the chance to read. family photos, clothes. some people didn't leave with anything. and also they wanted some reassurance that maybe their house is still standing.
4:09 pm
you know, some people lost all their money or have taken loans for many, many years. and so people want to go and see what's happened to their homes. but most of all, they asked for respite and they asked for the bombardment to come to an end. and that is part of the difficulty now, isn't it? we're moving towards the end of day three. and under this deal, tomorrow would be the final day of that ceasefire, the final day of the additional humanitarian aid coming in. and on tuesday, things would return to the way they were before this deal came into force. and i know you and many others are calling for that to be extended. yeah, absolutely. we're hoping that notjust that this pause is extended, but that this pause translates into a humanitarian ceasefire, also for the protection of people, also for the respite of people,
4:10 pm
but also for the continuity of the delivery of much needed humanitarian supplies, including fuel and cooking gas — much, much needed. but we are also in need to support the private sector. so, supplies, commercial supplies need to come. you see, when we were driving across gaza, all the shops were closed, all the pharmacies were closed. and so for the medium term, longer term, the private sector needs to be revived. and for that, we need commercial supplies. just a little bit of extra detail to give you about the handover of the latest group of hostages inside gaza. witnesses have told us that for the first time, the group of hostages tonight were handed over to the red cross in the north of gaza, which is of course the focus for
4:11 pm
israel's military offensive, the area around gaza city is very much when israel save that hamas command and control nerve centre is, that is why they have focused their military operation in the north of the strip and asked people in gaza to move south. it is interesting that hostages were handed over in the north today, because of course one thing that has not been known throughout this process is exactly where there's hostages have been held. forthose where there's hostages have been held. for those who have been released, they talk about being held underground in that network of tunnels that hamas has underneath gaza, but for the last two days, the handover has happened in the south of the gaza strip but today for the first time, according to witnesses inside gaza, the handover happened inside gaza, the handover happened in the north. we do expect them to be driven the same way to the rafah crossing with egypt. but that would take longer than usual from the handover to actually seeing those vehicles at the rafah crossing. of course we will continue to monitor
4:12 pm
those life pictures for you here on bbc news. the hostages who have been released over the last two days are in hospital recovering. earlier we got this update about the condition of them from an israeli medical centre. we meet here today after a very long and emotional night for us, where we as an organisation had the amazing privilege of being able to treat our brothers and sisters, our children, that have been kept captive by the hamas. in the last few weeks, the edmond and lily safra children's hospital, together with the sheba medical centre, has been preparing for this opportunity.
4:13 pm
we have gathered the best professionals and trained them. we learned a lot. we consulted with our peers and with the israeli ministry of health and tried to prepare to be able to give those that were kept captive any care and attention they might need when this fortunate event where they are released happens. and indeed, last night, after a very confusing and stressful period, at around 3:30am, we received these i2 captives, children and women, that came back.
4:14 pm
they underwent a medical evaluation and a psychological evaluation. i am happy to say that, despite the fact that the harsh conditions they have been under and the experience of captivity, they did not require any urgent medical intervention. of course, for the families of those hostages, those that have been released, we have seen the scenes of j°y released, we have seen the scenes of joy and the very touching reunions that happen in hospitals around israel. but there are still many families of those hostages still being held in gaza, some who do not have any prospect of being released under the current four days of this deal, and those male relatives, we know this only includes women and children, this deal.
4:15 pm
the bbc has been speaking with omer lubaton granot, four of his family members were kidnapped during hamas' attack on israel on october the 7th. he was asked about his reaction to the release of the hostages. we are thrilled, of course. it's a very happy, happy day and i think it's the good news that all of our nation needed after six very long weeks, to see the smiles of those kids, to see the hugs and their reuniting with their parents that were waiting here. it's amazing. it's a great feeling. we really hope to see more of them coming. we really want to see this deal getting complete and to see how we get other deals to bring all of the hostages home. the people that are on the list are mostly women and children. my cousin chen, she was kidnapped with her three children, agam, gal and tal — they are 17, ii and nine.
4:16 pm
and on the same day chen suffered so much loss — her husband was murdered, her eldest daughter was murdered, their house was burned. so we really hoped to get some good news, we really hoped to understand that they would be among the list in the next days. and we were just waiting hopefully and trying to understand if it was going to happen. it isa it is a particularly nervous wait tonight as well. of those families that they have women and children family members who still have not been released, because of course tomorrow is the fourth day of the four day deal and the final list of hostages that will be released under that deal, the final group that makes up 50 will be released this evening. it will be a particularly nervous and difficult wait for those families while they wait to see if their loved ones will be released. i
4:17 pm
can show you live shots now of beitunia, where the palestinian deed to knees released from palestinian jails will be returned to their loved ones, 39 of them, again, we are told they are due to be this evening released. under the terms of this deal with hamas for every israeli hostage freed from gaza, three palestinian prisoners are released from israeli jails. no adult men, nor anyone convicted of murder, is being exchanged. but the women and under 18 is released have been charged with various charges ranging from throwing stones through to attempted murder. bbc arabic news' muhannad tutunji spoke to one of those convicted of a more serious crime as she was reunited with her family amid a police presence. her first footsteps as a free woman.
4:18 pm
24—year—old marah bakir is one of up to 150 palestinian prisoners being released as part of israel's deal with hamas to bring its hostages home from gaza. translation: i feel emotional. it's a very good feeling. but also we are very sad because this deal came following the death of many innocent people and this makes us unhappy and uncomfortable. bakir is back home with herfamily in eastjerusalem after being sentenced to eight and a half years for a knife attack on a border police officer in 2015. i only heard i was going to be released this morning. i couldn't believe it, even when i was getting taken here in the police car. even when i saw my dad. i still can't believe it's not a joke. many palestinians view the prisoners as victims of israel's occupation. sawsan bakir has been campaigning
4:19 pm
for her daughter's release. i asked her what it feels like to see her daughter sitting on her couch for the first time since she was a teenager. translation: my happiness has come back with her. - she has brought the joy back into our home. - finally, ourfamily is together again. | israeli police told the prisoners' families to sign documents promising not to celebrate the release. the picture in the west bank, policed by the palestinians, is very different. among the singing and chanting in the capital, ramallah, were some hamas flags. all this comes in the context of the effort to free israeli hostages. around a dozen a day are being driven across from gaza to egypt, then airlifted to israeli hospitals to meet their families. muhannad tutunji, bbc news arabic, jerusalem.
4:20 pm
39 more palestinian detainees are due to be released very soon this evening. this tends to happen after the israeli hostages have been received by israeli officials. you can see then outline pictures of the prison in the occupied west bank. this is where the first stage of the release happens. the palestinian detainees are brought from various israeli jails, they are handed over at ofer prison. i also want to show you live pictures as well of beitunia, because they go through the checkpoint there, and then they are reunited with their loved ones. over the last few days, we have seen large crowds gathering, sometimes waving the palestinian flag, sometimes waving the green flag of hamas as well, and we have seen on those life pictures of beitunia, and we will see those similar scenes again at this evening, those large crowds waiting for the release of
