hello and welcome to sportsday, i'mjane dougall. two legends of the sporting world pass away. football icon franz beckenbauer, one of only three men to win the world cup as a player and a manager, has died at the age of 78. and rugby giantjpr williams has also passed away. the revered full back won three grand slam titles with his beloved wales. he has died at the age of 7a. in the fa cup on monday, relief for eric ten hag as manchester united defeat wigan to go through to the fourth round, following a controversial bruno fernandez penalty. and an historic moment at the snooker with only a fourth ever 147 at the masters, but it wasn't enough for ding to defeat o'sullivan.

hello and welcome to the programme. he's been described as one of football's greatest ever players — franz beckenbauer had a nearly two—decade—long career, during which he won the world cup as captain of west germany in 1974, then went on to lift the trophy again, this time as manager in 1990. tributes have been pouring in for the legend who was nicknamed der kaiser. joe lynskey has been looking back on his life. a world cup winning captain, a world cup winning coach. franz beckenbauer was the defender and the leader in football's most exclusive club. his first time at the tournament was in 1966, when at 20 for west germany he played in every match. they lost the final to england, but beckenbauer was emerging as the man at the back who could glide up the field. his country called him the kaiser — the emperor — and as captain he made them serial winners —

first in 1972 as european champions, then two years later in a world cup on home soil. it was just the first piece of an extraordinary career. at his club bayern munich he won three european cups. franz beckenbauer! he'd end his playing days in the states with new york cosmos. beckenbauer the player seemed destined for management. his first coaching job would be to lead his country... west germany win the world cup! ..and at italia �*90 he made them world champions. when he stepped back from the sideline he helped his nation off the field, heading their bid to host the 2006 world cup. in that role beckenbauer was later charged with corruption — his trial ending without a verdict. but on the field his achievements were without dispute, in a career forever linked

with his sport's greatest prize. franz beckenbauer won it in defence and in the dugout. one of the many tributes to beckenbauer has come from current germany manager, julien naglesmann. he said on social media: honorary president of bayern munich and former team—mate uli hoeness said: well, earlier i spoke to german footballjournalist taufig khalil who knew franz beckenbauer well and he began by telling me he remembered how light on his feet beckenbauer was. the way he was on the pitch, the way he moved around,

the way he behaved outside. there was always a lot of grace. he was not one of these loud, rude guys with drinking and things like that, no. he was really celebrating football in a very beautiful way. he stood for the beauty of the game, the way how he touched the ball, but also outside the pitch. he was a guy who loved to live. he was very well—managed, robert schwan who was the first manager of bayern munich and then of franz beckenbauer — he took care of him, he made him big, he brought in all of the advertisements. franz was a ladies guy — he love the ladies and the ladies loved him. he was married three times. but he had long—term relationships and a lot of people admired him for the way he just walked around. and he had golden hands. whatever he took in his hands, as a player, as a manager, as a president of bayern munich, he wanted to bring the world cup to

germany, he did that. we all should have in mind what this guy did for german football and this is most important. really, he was great. after the �*74 world cup, a lot of people said johan cruyff was king, but franz beckenbauer, he was bigger, he was the emperor, he was the kaiser. franz beckenbauer who had died at the age of 78. staying with football but here in england. a controversial penalty sealed a win for manchester united against wigan in the fa cup, putting them through to the fourth round and perhaps helping manager erik ten hag hold on to his position for a while longer. they won 2—0 at the dw stadium. katie gornall was there for us. wigan athletic are a club synonymous with the fa cup and pulling off the unexpected. remember they famously won this competition back in 2013 but of course a lot has changed in the past decade or so as they came here to the dw stadium sitting 18th in league one — 5a places

below manchester united, but still hoping to cause the upset of the round. in truth, they only really threatened through the opening minutes of this game. united in the end just too strong for them. they had the breakthrough on 22 minutes after a moment of real quality from diogo dalot — he scored from the edge of the box, curling into the corner through a forest of bodies. united had a handful of chances after that to extend their lead but they had to wait until the second half when bruno fernandes was clipped in the box and then picked himself up to score the penalty. so, 2—0 it finished here in wigan. i think united and erik ten hag will be mightily relieved that they've avoided an upset against the side. they've had a difficult season so far — 1a defeats so far in this campaign and the fa cup is really the only realistic hope of silverware this season. so now they go onto the fourth round where they'll play either

newport county of league two or nonleague eastleigh. katie gornall there. let's take a look at some of the other ties following the fourth round draw. an all premier league match between chelsea v aston villa at stamford bridge. the lowest side still left in the competition, maidstone united will travel to ipswich. just travel to ipswich. picking out a few of them for just picking out a few of them for you. liverpool will host either norwich or bristol rovers and the holders manchester city travel to tottenham. those ties will be played across the weekend of the 27th, 28th. for the full draw, go to the bbc sport website. the rugby world is mourning the loss of wales legend jpr williams who has died at the age of 7a. the wales and british and irish lions full back was a fearless player known for his aggressive and attacking style, and was synonymous with their glories of the 1970s. his death was announced by bridgend ravens, a club that williams played for and became club president. in a statement they said:

"jpr's passing leaves a huge void at the club." tomas dafydd reports. not many can be identified by their initials alone... jpr! ..butjpr williams was instantly recognisable. the sideburns, flowing hair, socks round the ankles. he was capped 55 times. an icon of wales�*s dominance of the 1970s. john peter rhys williams was brought up near bridgend — a talented tennis player then but he chose rugby, starting out in bridgend then london welsh. atjust 19 he made his wales debut... commentator: there's - the new young welsh fullback... ..and in his first campaign, he helped wales to the five nations championship. three grand slams followed and he played all four test matches as the lions

claimed what is it still their only series win in new zealand. so, you'll have to take it easy on for a few days on that wrist. and all the while he pursued a career in medicine, becoming an orthopaedic surgeon after stepping away from wales duty in 1981. in recent years he spoke out about player welfare, showing his concerns about brain injuries. there is no doubt that the generations after us are going to be left worse off than we were. jpr williams continued to play the odd game in his 50s. that longevity typical of his indomitable spirit. he was an uncompromising force on the field and a charismatic figure off it. jpr williams has died at the age of 7a. to snooker now. ronnie 0'sullivan has beaten ding junhui in a memorable first—round match at

hello. the week has got off to a cold start. some of us even got to see some snow on monday. tuesday will be another cold day, but it should be largely dry with a bit more in the way of sunshine. high pressure is in charge of the scene right now, centred across the north of the uk, where you can see the ice above squeezing together further south. well, that shows quite a strong wind. and where you're exposed to that wind, it is going to feel very cold indeed through the day ahead. a widespread frost and some icy stretches through tuesday morning. fog could also be an issue in the northern half of the uk, especially in the north of scotland, where some of that fog could linger for a good part of the day. this area of cloud across the south west of england producing some wintry showers, more cloud rolling in across the eastern side of scotland and northeast england through the afternoon. again, that could bring some wintry showers. most places, though, dry with some spells of sunshine. temperatures on the thermometer, three, four or five degrees. but when we factor in the strength of the wind, particularly across southern areas, these are the feels—like

temperatures, including that wind chill, it will feel subzero for many. now, as we head through tuesday night, clear skies for the most part, although more cloud rolling in across scotland and northern england. that may hold the temperatures up to some degree, but for the majority, it is going to be a cold night. temperatures dropping below freezing in many locations. so quite a widespread frost to take us into wednesday. again, there will be some spells of sunshine, but we will see more cloud filtering its way in from the north east, affecting scotland, northern england, perhaps getting into the midlands, wales, maybe even northern ireland through the day. best of the sunshine down towards the south. still feeling quite cold, but notice those temperatures not quite as low further north. we will have some slightly less cold air feeding in around ourarea of high pressure, the high, slightly changing shape, so that's what will be bringing some slightly less cold air, but also more in the way of cloud. so thursday and friday, generally quite cloudy but not quite as cold. temperatures getting up

to around 7—8 degrees, around the seasonal average. however, as we go through the weekend, it looks like this cold front will slip its way southwards and that will reintroduce some cold air from the north. as that cold air floods its way southwards, well, it will bring the chance of snow showers as we head through next week. bye for now.
