england prepares for their first match of the tournament later today. when you know, you know. we start this hour with the latest on the israel—gaza war. in the last few hours the israeli military has announced what it's calling a daily tactical pause in part of southern gaza, but not the city of rafah. that is where the focus of the military operation is. it says the halt in operations will be during daylight hours to facilitate the delivery of aid. aid organisations have repeatedly warned of a humanitarian crisis in gaza. israel has released the names of the eight soldiers killed by a hamas rocket in rafah on saturday, the deadliest incident for its troops in months. it is really army said —— the israeli army said it happened during operational activity.
12:02 pm
israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu said the war would go on. where will this be in gaza? . there has been mixed messaging from the israelis today. we had a statement first thing idf said that would be our pause in the south of gaza close to rafah along the road which would allow aid to be distributed more evenly along the gaza strip from it in the morning to seven at night. within an hour they issued a clarifying statement saying that this did not mean an end to hostilities in rafah our southern
12:03 pm
gaza and we have the hardline israeli national security minister saying that whoever made the decision to announce some sort of temporary daily pause was evil and a fool. so they don't really seem to have been talking to the military this morning, the politicians,. we see reports in the israeli media that the prime minister didn't even know of these plans before they were announced. that is right and what israel has said the weeks snow as they are allowing trucks into gaza and they are allowing about 200 a day and the problem on the other side as these are not being picked up side as these are not being picked up by side as these are not being picked up by the aid agencies who see it as simply too dangerous on the other side to pick up the aid and
12:04 pm
distributed into the crossing of the gaza strip on the border into egypt at rafah is also close to the moment and there are thousands of trucks backed up and aid agencies say there is a growing humanitarian crisis in gaza with united nations morning more than a million people face starvation within a matter of weeks. the penta can see the defence minister will soon was it —— visit washington for talks with his counterpart lloyd austin. i think —— the pentagon. that came in from the pentagon this week and is really defence minister said he would visit his counterparts in washington. it will be interesting to hear what he has to say because he is someone who
12:05 pm
is also expressed disquiet at the lack of any strategic plan what happens in gaza if the fighting stops and surely will get a message on americans they need to keep pushing for the ceasefire deal and one imagines the americans might be asking him and the benjamin netanyahu to come out and support this, which they have not done so far, even although they say it is an israel led plan. ispoke far, even although they say it is an israel led plan. i spoke to the head of issa. any pauses in fighting to get lifesaving to civilians and to save civilian lives can help.
12:06 pm
but sadly, at this moment, they survive it. our policies are not going to help us to get aid at the scale that is required to gaza and to the civilians of gaza. aid operation has generally been very limited since the operations in rafah started. before the invasions and the military operations in rafah had started we had a daily average of around 169 trucks getting in and getting into gaza. since may, the daily average has dropped to less than 100 trucks. a reminder for the listeners that the daily average of trucks that was getting to gaza before 7th of october was 500 trucks. so we are no way near the required amount of aid and type of aid that we are required that we need to deliver the civilians of gaza. we anticipate at this stage giving the severe food and security we anticipate at this stage given the severe food and security situations and the lack of water
12:07 pm
and lack of fuels and hospitals snd for bakeries, we will need at least between 100 to 500 trucks of aid per day. we don't think that the current environment in gaza will allow us to deliver that because this forces are not are not sufficient. we need a permanent ceasefire that can ensure that civilians are protected. the need for aid start to decline. and so we can restore water pipes, we can restore electricity lines, because now we also need a lot of water and fuel to be able to get towards to the gaza strip to allow hospitals and bakeries to work. this type of aid are not things we used to get at a high scale before 7th of october. so because of this damage to the water networks that the military operations has created, we need to deliver a lot of water. access to water now is very low. we had some data that the daily amount of water currently available
12:08 pm
for civilian in gaza is falling below 0.7 litres, which is way below the internationally recognized limit for survival, which is three litres per day for per person. so you can see how significant the humanitarian needs in gaza now and the impact on civilians is very dire. 0ur pollsterjohn curtice tells us in 60 seconds how the overall picture is looking for the main parties on the polls. 0ne poll this week stole the headlines. a yougov poll put reform one point ahead of the conservatives. but no other poll reported the same finding, though every poll has reported a fall in the conservative support and nearly all, a narrowing of the conservative lead over reform. so what last week was an average eight—point conservative lead over reform has now halved to just four points.
12:09 pm
and standing atjust 20%, conservative support is now at its lowest—ever in british polling history. mr sunak, whose own personal ratings have clearly fallen, must be beginning to doubt his decision to call the election early. not that labour have had it their own way. like the conservatives, their support is also down by two points. labour are being challenged by the greens, still on 6%, and the liberal democrats, whose vote, up in every poll this week, now stands at 12%. promises about nhs funding have been criticised by an independent health think tank. the nuffield trust said plans laid out by both conservative and labour would save the nhs for the tightest spending period in a0 years and both parties talked about the changes
12:10 pm
they've made in cancer care. yes, the nuffield trust said both labour and the conservatives are not been transparent enough about the funding challenges facing the nhs over the course of the next parliament. important to say spending is due to go up but not due to go up by as much as it traditionally does and by as much as the nuffield trust says is needed to deliver on current plans in place. a big part of improving outcomes in the nhs is dealing with issues around social care and the shadow health secretary
12:11 pm
wes streeting was asked this morning why his party had not a clearer plan how to reform social care. i make no bones about the fact, of course, on social care, i would have wanted the manifesto to be more ambitious, but to get policies in the manifesto, you had to run the gauntlet of answering two fundamental questions. can we keep this promise? can the country afford this promise? and if the answer to either of those questions was no, it's not in the manifesto. and that is why when people pick up labour's manifesto as they're deciding how to vote, they should know that they can trust every single policy in there that would offer real change for our country. and of course, once we get the economy growing, which is the central starting point of a labour government, if we win the next general election, we will have more available to either invest in our public services or put back into people's pockets. the conservatives jumped on the admission of the labour party would like to do more to suggest they would spend more of taxpayers money, this was the response of the transport secretary, matt harper.
12:12 pm
i thought your interview was very constructive. i think he has let the cat out the bag about the labour plans. he admitted in your show and another one earlier that the manifesto was not the whole story, it was a document to get through the election campaign and is confirmed there are more spending promises to come and that can only mean more taxes and exactly what we've been saying all the way through. he said after a campaign we would hope everyone to have a spending review on for the budgets and nobody can say the conservative manifesto 2019 is something you stuck to strictly. 2019 is something you stuck to strictl . ~ . . ., strictly. we had the pandemic and the war in ukraine, _ strictly. we had the pandemic and the war in ukraine, both - strictly. we had the pandemic and the war in ukraine, both things i strictly. we had the pandemic and i the war in ukraine, both things were huge. the war in ukraine, both things were hue. ' , , huge. the nuffield trust is suggesting _ huge. the nuffield trust is suggesting that _ huge. the nuffield trust is suggesting that neither- huge. the nuffield trust is i suggesting that neither party huge. the nuffield trust is - suggesting that neither party is transparent about this and that calculation to suggest the liberal democrats want to spend slightly more on health care, still not enough they say but leader ed davey
12:13 pm
spoke about how his party had the most ambitious plans. improving care is right in itsself. it is hugely important to help the health service. i just don't believe you can sort out health and i don't believe you can do that if not sorting out social care. it is partly because of my personal experience, i was a carer when my mother was terminally ill and then my grandmother looked after me when my mum died, i looked after her and then i have my disabled son so i have a lifetime of caring. and with my own experience
12:14 pm
and experience millions of people out there is that the family carers are critical. what i want to see at this election is if you don't support the family carers as well as the care workers will not sort this out and i absolutely passionately will do that and we have come forward with probably the most ambitious agenda and i'm really excited about it because when we've talked about it we have had a really strong reaction from people. social care is an issue i think both main parties would admit indifferent parliaments they have not managed to get on top of and the way that willie might*ve helped the nhs system. that nhs system really close to the hearts of voters so in any general election campaign i think the question going forward and this is which party voters will trust the most to deliver any kind of change to both the nhs and social care. a new photograph of prince william and his three children has been taken by the princess of wales and published on social media. kensington palace said the picture of prince william, prince george,

hello. sunday brings an improved day weather—wise for some of us, particularly across parts of england and wales where we had heavy showers around yesterday. there will be some sunshine, still a few showers on the cards. it will be cloudier with a bit of rain across parts of scotland and northern ireland at times, as well, because we're closer to the centre of low pressure here. as well, because we're closer we've got a couple of fronts just pushing their way south, so that is pushing that cloud and patchy rain across central and southern scotland into northern ireland through the latter part of the morning. elsewhere across england and wales, we're looking at some sunshine and a few showers. they will be most frequent for north—east england, the east midlands down towards the south—east. i think mostly dry out towards the west. lighter winds here than yesterday. still quite breezy for the western isles. that northerly breeze pushing down towards northern ireland, as well. we're looking at the mid—teens in the north, 13 to 16 degrees. 17 to 20 further south. we've got high levels of uv for some of us in between those showers, particularly for southern parts

of england and wales. for some of us, some very high levels of pollen today. the pollen count is on the rise, in fact, over the next couple of days. now into this evening and tonight, we've still got quite a lot of cloud in the north. it pushes a little bit further south. this weak front overnight brings a little bit of patchy rain to wales, central parts of england. some clear skies to the south of that, so temperatures six or seven degrees here, but i think most of us about nine to 12 to start monday morning. still quite a cloudy, reasonably mild start to the day. there will be some showers once again on monday bubbling up through the day across eastern scotland, parts of northern england, perhaps the midlands, as well. one or two for wales. southern england will be mostly dry with some sunshine, so an improved picture here. temperatures, in fact, up to about 22 towards the london region. a slightly less chilly day, so we're looking at temperatures back up to the seasonal norm, really, on monday. into tuesday, again, quite a bit of dry weather for central parts of the uk. some rain possible in the south—east. some showers building during the afternoon for northern england and eastern scotland. in between any of the showers, not a bad sort of day. lighter winds. temperatures about 21 in the warmest spots, but again, a bit cooler across the northern

half of scotland. high pressure tries to ridge in through the middle part of the week, but sandwiching that high pressure there is low pressure both to the north and to the south as well. so, yes, some drier weather on the cards. a lot of dry weather for cardiff, for instance, but still a chance of a few showers, but it's a touch warmer than it was last week. bye— bye.
