for croatia, devastation. for so long in this match, they found the front foot through a handball that brought them a penalty. and though luka modric saw it saved, italy's defence got lost in the moment. seconds on from the miss, the ball back in front of goal modric undeterred in a match they had to win modric this time. this time. 38 years old, he is the euro*s oldest scorer. the football icon of this nation had kept their tournament alive. italy are the holders. their attack, though, here was frantic. balls into the box found no sense of composure until the 98th minute. at that point, croatia were second in the group, but for italy, a draw would be enough to send them through.

it's an opportunity, brilliant goal martinez., two nations fates are changed in a moment. this was tournament football at its most extraordinary. italy back in it. croatia likely heading home. out in front in this group, spain had set a marker. they faced albania already through already top. they changed up their team but kept up their momentum. very nicely finished indeed. by ferran torres. spain's group stage games have brought three wins from three and no goals conceded. early form that makes them favourites. albania started this euros with a goal inside 30 seconds, but it ends in disappointment. they are knocked ou.t for croatia. they are knocked out. for croatia, the flight home for now is on hold, but two points are unlikely to send them through in third. for them and modric, it looks the cruel end of an era. joe lynskey, bbc news england manager gareth southgate is expecting a big improvement from his team when they face slovenia in their final group c match of euro 2024 on tuesday.

despite sitting top of the group the squad have come in for criticism from the public and former players. i don't think the performances over the last two matches other than the first half an hour against serbia, have reflected the way that we've played over the last couple of years. so we've had a short period here where we're not quite functioning at the level we want to. and that's been a brilliant challenge to unpick that, to find the best way forward, to be honest about where we sat three or four days ago, but also be really clear on the path forward from that and the steps to improve performance. denmark currently occupy second place in the group on account of drawing both of their opening matches, while serbia are out of contention for top spot but are not out of it completely just yet. if he plays for denmark on tuesday night, christian eriksen could set a new outright record of 133 appearances for the men's team.
12:48 am
i had an interview earlier where i said, ifeel like i've congratulated christian three or four times with the record. so yeah, again, tomorrow he's he's setting a milestone and not only in his career, but in danish football. i think we're all aware in this room of the player that he is. but yeah, also his personality is quite, quite special. you know, he's a nice guy. he's very calm. he has a lot of respect from the dressing room. and he does everything he does is in his own way. and i respect that a lot. and yeah, it's a great player, you know, great player in danish football history. another line coming out of the euros on monday. uefa has insisted there was "no delay" in treating hungary forward barnabas varga after he suffered a serious head injury in sunday's win over scotland. varga has undergone successful surgery and will be released

from hospital on wednesday after the collision in the second half that saw him suffer a facial fracture. uefa says he was seen by the team doctor within 15 seconds and the pitchside emergency team arrived with a stretcher as soon as they were requested by medical staff. hungary players were seen hurrying the stretcher towards their teammate. i think, yes, it was took so long. so i can understand and everybody understand the protocol what they have to wait _ but i think the life is now more important than the football. so, then the healthy is more important. so that moment we also was like not under control. we want to push them to go inside. doesn't matter what will happen. and that was the problem. we didn't agree with them. so why they don't go inside in immediately. at cricket*s t20 world cup — india have qualified top of their super 8s group and left australia on the brink after a 24—run win in saint lucia.

watching wasjoe wilson. australians could feel the pressure. the st lucian breeze was their right in their faces. was there right in their faces. and they could trace the trajectory of eight rohit sharma sixes way above their heads. he hit the fastest 50 of this tournament, ended with 92, leaving australia 206 to win. well, they were up with the rate right away. travis head saw to that with captain mitchell marsh. busiest place to field was the boundary. another six? no, the ultimate stretch from axar patel to catch. marsh one shot that didn't make it. many did. travis head in the form of his life could win any match. but with 56 still needed of 22 balls, head had to risk everything mishit

into the hands of rohit. head out for 76, australia finished 2a runs short. india were pushed. they responded once more. they prevailed. joe wilson, bbc news. after the match, arshdeep singh had praise for rohit sharma after the india captain led his side to victory. he's a legend, and the big knock was around the corner all the time, so we were not surprised by the way he played today and it came off really well. and even in the coming games, wejust hope he does the same for us. early on it was easy to score runs, the ball was coming on nicely, but afterwards it became tough to hit boundaries. so we knew when we get a couple of wickets it will be tough for the new batters coming in to hit boundaries at will. so that was the plan, and a couple of nice overs from the spinners in the middle of our service. i think we got ourselves in a good position. they bowled a really good couple of overs in the back end there and the breeze was quite hard to hit into. so combination of trying to get your match up and then when we did go to our match ups, they bowled

really, really well. so yeah, a fair bit of credit goes to how they were able to play out sort of overs 14 to 17, everyone did what they needed to do and i think we played a very good cricket team today. i felt like we were pretty good for 90% of it. so seeing how the guys come out the energy this morning, i don't think you can look too much into it. it's what it is. we knew it was coming, so you deal with it from cricket, we knew it was coming, so you deal with. we're a week away from wimbledon and there are major doubts about whether two former winners will be able to play. andy murray's had back surgery and it's not long since novak djokovic had an operation on his knee. laura scott caught up with the latter on monday. it caught a lot of people by surprise that he was even hoping to compete at wimbledon after he had surgery on his knee following an injury that he picked up at roland garros. but he arrived here yesterday, and we've just watched him take part in a practice session out on the court in front of lots of people. the cameras are trained on his every move. he is still very much undecided about whether he will be able to take part in wimbledon.
12:53 am
he is, of course, a seven—time champion here, but he did issue a pretty positive update when he came off the court. he's pleased with his trajectory over how his rehab is going. and i asked him a little bit earlier how hopeful he is of being able to compete at wimbledon when it begins next week. i didn't come here to play three rounds. you know, i'm going to take it day—by—day and then make a decision based on the feeling or the observation or the conclusion that i and team members have made, you know, over the four orfive, six days. and if i know that i can play close to my maximum or at maximum, then i'll play. very much looking forward to wimbledon, whether or not novak djokovic is going to be there. only time will tell on that one. don't forget, you can get the latest, of course, from the bbc sport website. you can download it to your tablet or your mobile. so you've got it there. it's free. you can do it. it's well worth it, trust me.

but for me tulsen tollet and the rest of the sports day team till next time. bye— bye. let's take a brief look now at the weather for the week ahead. so it's been really very warm and humid with temperatures well above the seasonal average right across the uk. but big changes happening by the end of the working week. again, for everyone, it will be feeling fresher with temperatures much closer to the seasonal average. by then, sunshine and showers in the forecast. and of course, the sunshine still strong, still very warm at this time of year. and some of the best of the sunshine on monday was across eastern areas of scotland. some high temperatures here, too, but already we've seen the warmest day of the week for scotland and northern ireland. it will be turning cooler from tuesday onwards with that chillier feeling air out towards the north and the west, gradually sinking further southwards and eastward. so still warm, still humid across much of

the southern half of the uk. now, tuesday, it's a muggy feeling start to the day. there's lots of mist and low clouds get more murk out towards western coast, lifting and clearing. cloudier conditions cooler for northern ireland and for scotland. some showers for eastern scotland stretching down to northern england perhaps. but it's for the rest of england and wales where we'll keep the sunshine and temperatures for the far south and the east could get very close to 30 degrees celsius. the sea breeze, of course, towards the case will give some the sea breeze, of course, towards the coast will give some refreshment on wednesday. we're just tracking this area of low pressure out towards the north and the west that's going to bring about the change later on through the week. but more cloudy skies for many northern and eastern areas of the uk. probably quite a bright day, but certainly feeling cooler for northern ireland and for western scotland. again, its warm, it's humid, there'll be a lot of strong sunshine across the south and the east and it's here again where we could see temperatures get perhaps a little past 30 degrees celsius for some, otherwise

the mid to the high 20s. now on thursday, our area of low pressure is going to send this cold front sweeping eastwards and that will eventually bring about the fresher feeling conditions across the board. so we're going to see some cloud, possibly some outbreaks of rain on this, some showers, some rather windy conditions across the western isles and across parts of northern ireland. but it's still warm, and there'll probably still be some sunshine ahead of that cloud across parts of east anglia. temperatures up to 26 degrees celsius, of course. a lot cooler though, further west. but we are all coming in to that fresher feeling air by the time we get to friday. so probably still quite a warm night across parts of east anglia. but then by the time we get to friday morning and that fresher feeling air, there will be some clouds, some showers perhaps, but also some sunny spells. and the sunshine will help to lift the temperature, but generally 14—23 degrees celsius this time north to south. and it's more of the same as we head into the weekend. so high pressure starts to build in yet again. could be a few showers around some areas of

cloud, perhaps at times. but there will be a lot of sunshine, too. and the sunshine, of course, will help to lift the temperature where it does appear. so temperatures again, probably the high teens, the low 20s, now much closer to where we would expect them to be at this time of year. and it's the same again really on sunday. there's a ridge of high pressure not too far away, and that's going to be building in towards the south, i think, as we head through the course of the following week. so always the chance for a lot of dry weather, low pressure out towards the north and the west. there could be some wet weather at times here. so some showers, possibly some longer spells of rain. but here's the long term outlook for our capital cities. as you can see, the heat wave ends, and temperatures will be much closer to the average. some sunny spells at times.
