intimidation are disgusting and are not reflective of the belfast i know and love. on saturday, i was on the ground alongside activists countering the racist demonstration at city hall. later that day, i stood side by side with the proud residents of... we stood up and stopped the racist mob from progressing further onto our streets. i also met later that day with the owners of businesses who were attacked along botanic and indeed the accommodation housing a refugee and asylum—seekers. lessons can be learned in terms of the policing operation, mistakes must not be repeated. the priority it must be to protect people and property and face down at racism, violence and intimidation. by those responsible for what happened over the last number of days, are the individuals and groups who worked up hate online and then came onto our

streets to cause havoc and maine have been fuelled by some of phobic and racist hate. these people must be held accountable for their actions and face the full force of the law. there can be no place for racism, hatred, discrimination or intimidation anywhere within our society. throughout the last week i have been on the ground constantly engaging with our minority communities, our businesses, where it is sporadic violence and attacks have been continuing. people are living in a realfear and you are hearing that on a daily basis. already we are hearing reports of nurses planning to leave the north in search for a safer location. there are people who work in our hospitals, they are our local shopkeepers and they are also our local neighbours. the message coming out from this chamber today it must be one of unity. note if, no buts.
