tv   Cry Witch  BBC News  August 19, 2024 3:30am-4:00am BST

3:30 am
voice-over: this is bbc news. we'll have the headlines for you at the top of the hour, which is straight after this programme.
3:31 am
she sobs
3:32 am
julius has been pushing forjustice for katana, but as yet there have been no arrests.
3:33 am
it's a recurring theme. very few people have been charged on the allegations of killings of the elderly, and that's why i think even the people who are involved in killing, they feel they are so free. i went with one of the police officers to collect a body, and he told me, "julius, no, no, let them kill each other. "my work here is to pick the bodies." the police are the weakest link in the whole of this process. in most of our police stations, some of them, they can't even tell you how many people have been killed. they can't. singing katana's fears are valid. we've been here two weeks, and are alerted to the funeral of another elderly gentleman found hacked to death with a panga. whistles and rattling
3:34 am
wailing david karisa yeri left eight grandchildren and 20 great—grandchildren. the deceased was a key witness in a land dispute. no—one seems to doubt that this is the reason he was killed.
3:35 am
yet again, i am struck by the weight of the agony felt here. she cries the nephew of the deceased gentleman says he knows exactly who is responsible. he wants to shout out the name and wants justice. is there really impunity for murder? i've been put in touch with a man who says he's been hired as a hit man in the past. i would never choose to meet someone who claims to be a murderer, who's responsible for such horrific suffering, but he is a crucial
3:36 am
part of this jigsaw. what kind of person carries out such hideous attacks? and why? how many people have you killed?
3:37 am
3:38 am
he's a cog in a broken wheel. but whether one believes in witchcraft or not, no—one should ever be allowed to take life and walk free. the price of a life is around 50,000 kenya shillings,
3:39 am
or roughly $380. and he's one of many that seem to have profited from murder. i do wonder at the failure of the moral fabric of society and the justice system here. they greet each other
3:40 am
an elders meeting has been arranged to discuss david's fears at his uncle's homestead. as is the usual custom, his son chris was summoned to join. but he hasn't come. katana has agreed to let us join him on a visit back to his home. he has only been home once since the attack took place, and will only go with julius as protection. it is not an easyjourney.
3:41 am
3:42 am
family and neighbours begin to gather as they see katana arrive.
3:43 am
3:44 am
they greet each other he cries it's devastating. katana's tears and the pain of his youngest son are so hard to watch. i ask katana to show me the
3:45 am
house where he was attacked.
3:46 am
katana's wife joins us. the atmosphere is uncomfortable.
3:47 am
an argument seems to start in giriama. katana's wife is being challenged over her lack of communication with him since he's been living at the centre.
3:48 am
katana's wife feels under attack. i ask to speak to her alone. i hope to defuse her anger and listen to her.
3:49 am
3:50 am
katana's wife was amongst many questioned by the police but released with no charges. while tambala is surrounded by love, i'm left with nothing but sorrow here. i'm told that the mere fact that katana has survived means many believe he must be a witch. so his very existence puts him at a greater risk of attack. i fear he will never go home. before i leave, i want to know if there is any resolution to david's situation.
3:51 am
his son chris has agreed to talk to me. i'm a bit anxious about meeting chris. i don't know how he will take this. but also his dad cares for him and loves him and wants to have a relationship with him. so i'm hopeful that him knowing this will kind of soften it. but i'm still quite anxious. we have arranged to meet in a public place, not at his homestead.
3:52 am
3:53 am
speaking to chris,
3:54 am
he downplayed everything. he denied the allegations that have been put forward. he even said that he has an ok relationship with his father. it's difficult. i have not seen evidence of threats or attacks in my time here. but i know david feels unsafe. family love is something i hold so close to my heart. i can't seem to comprehend... ..how things change... ..where you easily turn on your parents, siblings, people you've grown beside. you've shared a bed. you've shared a meal. you've shared a spoon. you share memories.
3:55 am
you're connected. these are the people i believe you will do anything for. you will protect... ..to the death. but here it's the reverse. the law, the justice system, needs to do itsjob here. people need land title. violent crime must be punished. and society needs to find its way back to a place where the elders are revered and cherished the african way.

station for further updates as areas of low pressure start to push in from the west. we'll start off largely fine and quiet on monday. eastern england clinging onto the sunshine and, once again, the warmth throughout the day, and that's where we're likely to see highest temperatures. so, if we stretch a line from hull down to the isle of wight anywhere south and east of that, keeping some sunshine and highs of 25 celsius. clouding over across much of southwest england and wales, with some heavier bursts of rain starting to push in. it will turn increasingly windy through the irish sea and up into northwest scotland. for northern ireland and scotland, there'll be some heavier bursts of rain at times, strong winds, and temperatures certainly more subdued. that heavy rain continues through scotland overnight. it will weaken as it moves its way down through the southeast to just a band of showery rain. but certainly again here, the notable thing will be the feel of the weather. quite a warm night monday night into the early hours of tuesday morning with overnight lows of only 17 celsius. now, for england and wales on tuesday,
3:58 am
it's a case of sunny spells and a few scattered showers. some of those showers, perhaps heavy with the odd rumble of thunder. close to this area of low pressure, we see a frequent rash of showers being driven in along west—facing coasts, and here, noticeably cooler once again, 14—16 celsius. highest values of around 23—24 with the best of the sunshine once again in the southeast. now, as we go through wednesday, on the whole, we've got this little ridge of high pressure quietening things down. but there is another spell of very wet and very windy weather developing. so, towards the latter stages of the day, the winds will strengthen close to gale force. that's going to drive in some showers across north and west scotland. elsewhere, we keep some sunshine. the winds strengthening, but not a bad day on wednesday — highs of 14—22 celsius. it's overnight wednesday into thursday where we see a real spell of wet and windy weather. that will linger in the northwest towards the end of the working week, somewhat drier and brighter conditions further south.
