been hearing testimony from people who saw what happened. we have been hearing from survivors as well. one of the survivors, a british tourist, has told an italian newspaper that she held her one—year—old daughter whilst it was happening. she said, i held her afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep herfrom drowning. a really vivid description of what happened here. she went on to say that it was darkin here. she went on to say that it was dark in the water, she couldn't keep our eyes open, she screamed for help but all she could hear around her were the screams of others. that reaction has just come were the screams of others. that reaction hasjust come in in the last couple of hours or so. we are bound to hear from last couple of hours or so. we are bound to hearfrom more people over the coming day, but obviously it has left a lot of people traumatised, a massively tragic incident. fix, massively tragic incident. a terrifying description. sam, thank you for that update. earlier, the bbc*s business editor, simonjack told us a bit more about mike lynch... he was often described
3:05 pm
as the bill gates of the uk. not a perfect analogy but he was huge and is huge in the technology industry. he founded a company called autonomy, a precursor to artificial intelligence. it was much sought after. in2011, it was bought by us tech giant hewlett—packard forjust over $11 billion. it was a problematic acquisition because within a year, they had written down the value of that investment, saying it was worth 90% less than they paid. he was accused of artificially inflating the value of the company. the us authorities persisted and eventually he was extradited to the us after a decade of toing and froing. it was finally agreed by priti patel. he was sent over there, put under house arrest and started his trial in march 202a.
3:06 pm
injune, he was dramatically exonerated of all charges and let go as a free man, having had a decade of these proceedings hanging over him. he spoke to the bbc and said it was an amazing moment. i was stepping between two universes. one moment, i could have gone to jail, the next i was set free. he said to the bbc, ijust want to get back to what i enjoy most, which is innovating. we haven't had the story confirmed yet. incredibly shocking for a man who had turned the page in his life. obviously huge questions about this and a very shocking story, but someone who had been through over a decade having a cloud hanging over him, was probably enjoying a bit of his freedom, and was a very rich man. let's speak to dr simon boxall, senior lecturer in oceanography at southampton university. thank you very much forjoining us on the programme. first of all, a lot of people might assume that the

3:17 pm
election day, joe biden had been lagging donald trump in almost every poll in the battle ground states. sometimes by as much as eight percentage points. she has managed to draw level with donald trump and in some of them go ahead of him. a poll from cbs news yesterday has her one percentage point ahead in many of those states, and three percentage points ahead nationally. the big question for the democratic party is, can they hold onto that? they will have a lot of the media attention this week because of everything that goes on here, particularly trying to cling on to some of those pop culture people endorsing her. they will try to really master all parts of the us population this week. what happens next week is the big question. we will be back with you very soon. katrina perry in chicago for the democratic national convention. around the world and across the uk, this is bbc news.
3:19 pm
as you saw a moment ago, the middle east is on people's minds at the democratic national convention in chicago, and america's top diplomat antony blinken is in the region where's he had talks with israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu. the israeli prime minister's office has described a meeting with the us secretary of state as "positive". mr blinken said now is "probably the best, maybe the last opportunity" to secure a ceasefire and hostage release deal in gaza. while the us has expressed optimism about a deal, that level of optimism isn't shared by the israeli leadership or hamas. here's mr blinken. this is a decisive moment, probably the best, maybe the last opportunity to get the hostages home, to get a ceasefire, and to put everyone on a better path to enduring peace and security. i'm here as part of an intensive diplomatic effort on president biden's instructions to try to get
3:20 pm
this agreement to the line and ultimately over the line. it is time for it to get done. it's also time to make sure that no one takes any steps that could derail this process. the current negotiations are based on a plan consisting of three phases. phase one would see a *full and complete ceasefire' lasting six weeks. the withdrawal of israeli forces from all populated areas of gaza, and the exchange of some of the hostages — including women, the elderly and the sick or wounded — for palestinian prisoners held in israel. phase two would see the release of all other living hostages and a "permanent end to hostilities". and finally phase three involves the start of a major reconstruction plan for gaza and the return of dead hostages* remains. meanwhile, the hamas—run health authority in gaza says israeli air strikes killed at least 21 people, including six children, on sunday.
3:21 pm
let's speak to our middle east correspondent, wyre davis. we arejust seeing we are just seeing from a member of benjamin netanyahu's party, defending israel's new demands for a ceasefire deal, so beyond those proposals we have just been reminding our viewers off, so explain for us, what are the key sticking points at the moment? the first thing is — sticking points at the moment? tue: first thing is that sticking points at the moment? tte: first thing is that israel sticking points at the moment? "tt2 first thing is that israel insists that it hasn't put any new demands forward, that israel's position has been clear for several months, but of course, hamas and others have said israel is putting these new demands. the key areas are what israeli military control would remain in parts of gaza, particularly southern and central gaza, in the event of a ceasefire. israel wants to rich great —— retain control of the philadelphia college
3:22 pm
—— philadelphia corridor. a big sticking point seems to be israeli military checks. on the face of it, the meeting between anthony blinken and benjamin netanyahu was a good thing. they spoke about fundamental things. according to the israelis, the meeting was positive and held in a good atmosphere. we have had few other details. of course, there have been leaks from meetings in the past, but israeli reaction on the ground in the well—connected parts of the israeli media is much less positive. there's a feeling here that hardline right—wing members the israeli government won't agree or won't let mr netanyahu go through with the ceasefire talks because they think the military objectives are not yet met. similarly, hamas on the ground has a new leader who is thought to be even more reluctant
3:23 pm
for a ceasefire than his predecessor, reportedly assassinated tjy predecessor, reportedly assassinated by the israelis. on the ground, much more scepticism than we are getting from the leadership. let's speak to hussein haridy, the former assistant to egypt's foreign minister and former head of israeli affairs at the egyptian foreign ministry. thank you forjoining us on bbc news today. in your view, are the proposals on the table still the best chance of getting to a deal? well, i completely agree with what anthony blinken said today in israel, that this is a very good chance to finalise the ceasefire and the hostage release agreement. i believe that president biden as well as the arab mediating countries, egypt and qatar, are really pushing
3:24 pm
forfinalising egypt and qatar, are really pushing for finalising this agreement. finally, the talks that are taking place right now and should be wrapped up by next friday, lets hope that these talks would lead to an agreement. tt that these talks would lead to an agreement-— agreement. it was no surprise to hear anthony — agreement. it was no surprise to hear anthony blinken _ agreement. it was no surprise to hear anthony blinken saying - agreement. it was no surprise to hear anthony blinken saying in l agreement. it was no surprise to. hear anthony blinken saying in his meetings earlier in israel that this could be the last opportunity to get israeli hostages home, because that is one of the big pressure points for benjamin netanyahu — so many protests from the families of those hostages calling for him to do everything he can to get them freed. is that enough pressure, though, to get mr netanyahu to move? definitely, i think the reference of anthony blinken to the importance of relieving the hostages as quickly as possible has some kind of pressure on mr netanyahu. and of course, the israeli public opinion, particularly the families of the hostages, are
3:25 pm
really pushing for this agreement. the main obstacle so far has been the conditions that mr netanyahu keeps dictating to his negotiating team. but the question now is, how long mr netanyahu can be seen by israeli public opinion as an impediment, an obstacle to the release of the remaining hostages. the more time we lose, the lower the number of hostages that will be released alive. and this is really a reality that should be on the mind of the israeli government, especially mr netanyahu. of course,
3:26 pm
putting aside other significant questions concerning the future of gaza, because this agreement is a ceasefire agreement, an agreement that could pave the way for the release of the hostages, but also this is an agreement about the future of gaza stop when we say the future of gaza stop when we say the future of gaza stop when we say the future of gaza, the future of the relations between the palestinians and the israelis, so there was a lot of, a lot at stake in this agreement. of, a lot at stake in this aareement. ., ., , ., ., agreement. unfortunately, we are out of time, agreement. unfortunately, we are out of time. but — agreement. unfortunately, we are out of time. but i — agreement. unfortunately, we are out of time, but i really _ agreement. unfortunately, we are out of time, but i really appreciate - of time, but i really appreciate your time today. thank you for your thoughts on those continuing talks in the middle east. egypt's former assistant foreign minister. we will be keeping a very close eye on those discussions that are going on and bringing you any update, so do stay with us here on bbc news.
