thousands of delegates are beginning to gather in chicago ahead of the democratic national convention which is getting under way in the next few hours. the four—day event will see kamala harris formally accept the party's nomination to be the presidential candidate following president biden*s withdrawal from the race last month. activists are buoyed by poll numbers that show her having wiped out the clear lead that her republican rival, donald trump, had established, but there are concerns that divisions over the war in gaza could undermine party unity. this is the scene at the venue, where security is tight ahead of the four—day event. this this is going to be jam—packed later. lots of noise has the delegates file in to see democratic party royalty, i think it is safe to

which it feels like this campaign has been running for a very long time and, in many ways, it has, but there was that recess just a month ago with the change at the top of the ticket for the democratic party. that has changed what is happening at the convention here as well because ordinarily these conventions have a roll call, which is all the delegates from the various states around the country who are very hard—working volunteers, party ha rd—working volunteers, party faithful, hard—working volunteers, party faithful, who come to these conventions and they cast votes based on the result of the primary competitions in their states for their candidate, who becomes the nominee. of course, this year for the democratic party, kamala harris didn't win any primary elections. they were all one night byjoe biden, and we have this unusual set of circumstances further compounded by the fact that the democratic party decided to hold that roll call virtually a couple of weeks ago. so she is in fact already the official democratic party nominee. what is happening here is basically her formal acceptance of that, although,
4:10 pm
formal acceptance of that, although, for the sake of that razzmatazz you are talking about, the party has said they will hold a celebrate of re—rollcall, so we will hear from all the delegates from the states, where they stand up at the little microphones and pledge their delegates for kamala harris. we have just found out the running order, the speaking order, for tonight, and i can tell you that the vice president herself, kamala harris, will make some remarks herself. we will make some remarks herself. we will also hear the main speaker tonight, joe biden. tonight is being billed as a farewell tojoe biden and handing on of the torch from him to her. and there is a tribute to him, some videos that will be played. we will hear from some of those closest friends, like delaware senator chris coons, from jill biden and from joe biden himself. this is the only night he will be here. you will then leave chicago and we won't see him for the rest of the week.

donald trump presidency. for the moment, thank you very much. . donald trump presidency. for the l moment, thank you very much. we believe you for the moment as those preparations go on inside the centre for the convention. let's take you outside the centre, where the national democratic convention is going on, because there are some protests relating to the situation in gaza are taking place, which we were telling you about in more detail in the last hour. a big focus on what kamala harris might say over the next four days about the situation in the middle east. officially, we are hearing there is no difference in policy between her and joe biden, but let's see what she says. as katrina was saying in the last hour, chicago is home to one of the biggest populations of people from the middle east in the united states. the prime minister, sir keir starmer, has labelled recent rioting in northern ireland as "clearly racist".
4:14 pm
on monday, starmer said he wanted to visit northern ireland to meet those affected by the disorder and to thank frontline officers who dealt with it. the riots started after disinformation spread that the suspect in the southport attack was a muslim asylum seeker. let's take a listen to mr starmer. the disorder is intolerable. it is incapable ofjustification. it is clearly racist and it does not represent the modern forward—looking northern ireland that i know this place is. so i am very pleased to achieve those three things today and to work with all communities, the psni and others to ensure we handle this situation, notjust the immediate disorder, but the longer term that we ensure we have that one northern ireland approach that i know represents the northern ireland, the modern northern ireland, of the future.

as you saw a moment ago, the middle east is on people's minds at the democratic national convention in chicago, and america's top diplomat antony blinken is in the region where's he had talks with israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu. the israeli prime minister's office has described a meeting with the us secretary of state as "positive". mr blinken said now is "probably the best, maybe the last opportunity" to secure a ceasefire and hostage release deal in gaza. i think we can show you just now these live pictures coming to us from tel aviv. these are relatives of israeli hostages held by hamas, outside the hotel in tel aviv where
4:17 pm
anthony blinken has been meeting israeli official. they will continue their programme of protests. there have been many of them, calling on benjamin netanyahu to do everything he can to secure a deal that will see their loved ones released. of course, this is a key part of the discussions that are under officials from egypt and qatar are also working to bring about a deal between israel and hamas that would see the return of hostages as well as a ceasefire in gaza itself. these pictures coming to us live from tel aviv. as for the status of those discussions, the us has expressed optimism about a deal. that level of optimism about a deal. that level of optimism isn't shared by the israeli leadership or hamas. the current negotiations are based on a plan consisting of three phases. phase one would see a "full and complete ceasefire" lasting six weeks. the withdrawal of israeli forces
4:18 pm
from all populated areas of gaza, and the exchange of some of the hostages — including women, the elderly and the sick or wounded — for palestinian prisoners held in israel. phase two would see the release of all other living hostages and a "permanent end to hostilities". and finally phase three involves the start of a major reconstruction plan for gaza and the return of dead hostages* remains. meanwhile, the hamas—run health authority in gaza says israeli air strikes killed at least 21 people, including six children, on sunday. our middle east correspondent wyre davies has the latest from jerusalem. the key areas are what israeli military control would remain in parts of gaza, particular southern
4:19 pm
and central gaza. israel wants to take control of a corridor, a strip of land between gaza and egypt. that is a contentious issue. there is also the issue up to what extent people in gaza would be able to return to their home areas in the north of gaza, and central areas, and hindered by israeli military checks. that seems to be —— unhindered. that seems to be a big sticking point. on the face of it, the meeting is a good thing, showing that the two men spoke about fundamental things. according to the israelis, the meeting was positive and held in a good atmosphere, but we have had few other details. of course, there have been leaks from meetings in the past, but israeli reaction on the ground in the well—connected parts of the israeli media is much less positive. there is a feeling that hardline, right—wing members of the israeli government won't let mr netanyahu go through with a ceasefire because
4:20 pm
they think the military objectives are not yet met. similarly, hamas on the ground has a new leader in yahya sinwar, thought to be even more reluctant for a ceasefire than his predecessor, who was reportedly assassinated by the israelis. on the ground, much more scepticism than we are getting from the leadership. ukraine is continuing its incursion into russia's kursk region, with confirmation from moscow that a third crucial bridge has been damaged. the latest bridge — which runs over the river seym — is the last remaining crossing point in the area, and its destruction would cut off some russian troops from reinforcement and supply. on sunday, the ukrainian military released this aerial footage of a strike which destroyed a different strategic bridge which also runs over the river seym. ukraine is two weeks into its biggest attack on russian territory since moscow's invasion of ukraine in 2022. ukraine's president zelensky says the assault on kursk is aimed at carving out a buffer zone on russian territory.
4:21 pm
he said ukraine was "achieving its goals" and wearing down moscow's *war machine'. bbc verify*s olga robinson has been looking at the latest footage. here at bbc verify, we have been analysing satellite images and social media footage to see where and why ukraine has been targeting bridges in the russian border region of kursk. and just to remind you, this is the region where ukraine launched its surprise incursion nearly two weeks ago. and since then, as you can see on this map by the institute for the study of war, a us based think tank, ukrainian forces have advanced up to 30km, that's around 19 miles, into russia's territory. and in the past few days, they have repeatedly targeted bridges over the river seym. first was the bridge in the village of glushkova. here is a video that we verified on the 15th of august that shows big holes in the bridge, after it was reportedly
4:22 pm
hit by ukrainians. you can see them here. the bridge then collapsed the next day, and you can still see those same holes in this photo that was shared on russian telegram later. and here's a satellite image from saturday that shows the extent of damage to the bridge quite clearly. then the ukrainian air force commander shared this video on sunday said to show the destruction of a second bridge, this time in the village of svani. and we know it is the bridge because the surroundings that you can see here in the footage match previous social media videos from the area, but the extent of the damage is unclear. and just today, this video emerged on russian social media said to show a representative of the russian investigations committee saying ukraine damaged a third bridge in the village of karish on sunday and this is the last bridge through which russian forces could get supplies in this area. we don't have any visual
4:23 pm
confirmation of this yet. with three bridges destroyed or damaged over the river seym, the russians have apparently been trying to find alternative routes across this river. we spoke to a defence specialist at king's college london. the russians have already — king's college london. the russians have already been _ king's college london. the russians have already been trying _ king's college london. the russians have already been trying to - have already been trying to establish alternative routes across the river. take a look at this satellite imagery that shows, that is from saturday, and it shows what looks like a new structure nearly two kilometres, orjust over one mile, to the east of the glushkova bridge. and we know it's new, because if you compare it to this earlier image from satellite from last week, it's just not there. we also identified what appears to be another new structure, a second new bridge, nearly four kilometres orjust over two miles to the north—west. ukraine may still be
4:24 pm
able to hold the advantage. samuel cranny evans, of the rusi uk—based think tank, told us that if ukraine is able to establish its own defensive lines on the banks of the river seym, then it would be hard for the russians to push them back. the pioneering us television talk show host, phil donahue, has died at the age of 88. donahue, who created and hosted the phil donahue show between 1967 and 1996, was considered the "king of daytime talk" in the united states. his tv show was the first to include many elements familiar to viewers today, including participation from the studio audience. the often—controversial issues he chose to discuss made his show both notorious and popular. donahue won 20 emmy awards, and earlier this year, was awarded the medal of freedom by presidentjoe biden. i want to show you those live pictures from tel aviv again. these

are families of hostages held by hamas outside the hotel in tel aviv where us secretary of state anthony blinken has been meeting israeli officials, keeping up their campaign officials, keeping up their campaign of pressure, urging benjamin netanyahu to do whatever it takes to ensure their loved ones are freed. meanwhile, in the united states, outside the centre where the democratic national convention will be taking place over the next four days, pro—palestinian protesters have gathered outside to criticise the biden administration position on israel. we will keep a close eye on the situations in both of those locations for you, as well as all the other main news events of the day. do stay with us here on bbc news. you are watching verified live.
