secretary of state stand up and make the type of statement that was made today. and it is also worth pointing out the significance of our courts in this process as well. today's announcement comes after the judgment ofjuly the 11th, where the court of appeal here was not only scathing in the previous british government's response to our supreme court victory of 2019, but it went further and made it clear that both my family and the british government needed to find agreement. and in the absence of agreement, the court would direct what it felt was the best mechanism and vehicle to properly investigate all of the circumstances around my father's murder. so we find ourselves here today, over 35 years later, with the british government accepting that there needs to be a full public inquiry. it is what we have always asked for and we look forward to getting down and getting stuck into the work as soon as it is possible. i’m

then prime minister david cameron apologised for state collusion in the murder of pat finucane. fast forward to 2024, this new labour government has had to make a choice about whether it was going to hold a public inquiry into the killing or not, following years and years of legal action by geraldine finucane, who you have just heard from. over those years, over those three decades, there have been many investigations, lots of legal action, as i said. there have been broken promises, but never a public inquiry. as you heard there, that is always what the family have said is the only thing that can give them the answer is that they want on this killing, and on the level of state collusion. because they believe that it went much further than what has been uncovered so far. we just heard earlier this afternoon from the secretary of state, hilary

benn, about this public inquiry. when he was speaking, he said it would be held because if the exceptional reason of outstanding and unfulfilled commitments by previous governments, and that is why he thinks and has announced a public inquiry will go ahead. he says he hopes for transparency, that the inquiry will avoid unnecessary cost, and that his government will work together for and that his government will work togetherfor a and that his government will work together for a better future for all of the people in northern ireland. but there has been a lot of political reaction, as you can imagine. the announcement of this public inquiry has been welcomed by northern ireland's first minister michelle o'neill of sinn fein. you just heard from john finucane during that press conference, pat finucane's son, he is a sinn fein mp, it has also been welcomed by the irish taoiseach. from the dup, gavin robinson, he is the leader of northern ireland's largest

unionist party, he said this decision will heap further misery on families and that today's decision sent a message that this murder is more deserving of investigation than others. and i think that the discrepancy in that political reaction really demonstrates just how difficult troubles— era killings and murders and the fallout can be for many people in northern ireland, all of these years on. than of these years on. an incredibly _ of these years on. an incredibly difficult situation. the announcement was welcomed by the taoiseach with simon harris they're saying that the irish government stands ready to work with westminster. we have arguably been seeing an improvement in relations between the two leaders, between the two leaders, between ireland's leader, the republic's lead and the uk leader, we have the visit that we were talking last week about with the uk prime minister there in meeting simon harris.
