europe's golfers have lost the solheim cup. the defending champions were beaten 15.5 points to 12.5 by the hosts, the usa, who held their nerve in a tense finale. our golf correspondent ian carter reports from virginia. it was closer — much closer — then i think anyone would have anticipated heading into the final day's singles. europe had to make up that four—point deficit and they had been outplayed on the first two days, but this was a really gutsy and spirited display by the europeans, typified by charley hull, who set them on their way with a fantastic victory — seven under par for the 1a holes that it took her to beat nelly korda, the world number one. a brilliant display by charley hull. also to beat alison lee from georgia hall. and that gave hope to the europeans, who ultimately won the closing session by 6.5 points to 5.5, but ultimately

they had to make up just too much ground. and as a result, the americans could do it with half points, and the most notable of those came from lilia vu, the world number two. she had been in fine form throughout the match, but she was up against it against albane valenzuela, the rookie, making her debut, who was two up with two to play. then vu holed a brilliant putt on the 17th that kept her alive, and then at the 18th, a fantastic approach shot that led to the tap—in that really prompted the start of american celebrations. they have the solheim cup back. they had to work extremely hard for it, but it's back in their hands for the first time since 2017. it really could've gone either way. i mean, it's crazy there at the end, how it all unfolded. i wasjust hoping and praying it went our way
12:47 am
and i'm just proud of the team. lilia's finish there was unbelievable and, you know, that's what you expect from one of the best players in the world. i had fun today. it's always exciting - on a sunday, but there was possibilities out there. and at several times, we thought we could i get it done, but, i mean, it came down to - a couple of matches. happy for stacy, obviously, at home turf, but, yeah, i we will come back very hungry. onto football now and the premier league, where arsenal have moved—up to second after winning the north london derby at tottenham. gabriel scored the only goal — in a game their manager mikel arteta called "ugly". but it's a good start to what promises to be a tough week for arsenal, as they open their champions league campaign before a trip to league leaders manchester city. arsenal are two points behind city in the table. today as well, we had a very

specific context, after the international break, after a few blows and a few bad news we had. how the team reacted, the spirit we showed, we did a lot of simple things wrong today, we did all that magnificently well, so that we we camp did, the way we found the right opportunities to get away with the win showed a lot of maturity from the team —— the way that we competed. in the day's other match, newcastle came from a goal down to beat wolves 2—1 at molineux. harveyjones scored a stunning long—range winner to help move newcastle are up to third, whilst wolves stay in the bottom three. hansi flick was full of praise for his young barcelona star lamine yamal after the teenager scored two goals to help them beat girona 4—1. the result means the la liga leaders have won all five of their matches so far, after yamal scored his goals in the first half before dani olmo and pedri secured the win to maintain their perfect start to the season. they now head to monaco to kick off their champions league.
12:49 am
we start very concentrated, very focused, and we pressed them because we know when we give them the space, we get in trouble, so this was our goal, that we press them really good. so you saw, the first goal was unbelievable, really good from the lamine. at the end, we deserved both the win and also the result. elsewhere in spain, there were wins for second—placed atletico madrid, where conor gallagher got his first goal for the club, and athletic bilbao and celta vigo. lando norris has cut max verstappen*s f1 championship lead to 59 points with seven races to go afterfinishing ahead of him at the azerbaijan grand prix. the briton had to start from near the back of the grid but he overtook verstappen and ended up finishing fourth after ferrari's carlos sainz and red bull's sergio perez crashed out. norris* team—mate oscar piastri

won the race and their points haul means mclaren take the lead in the constructors* championship. i'm very happy with today, i'm very happy with the result, not just for myself but for oscar. another win for him is amazing, so i'm very happy for him, and therefore the whole team, because a win is always an amazing thing. a win and the fourth is even better from where we started and it was not what we were expecting today, so a good points haul, outscored red bull again, which is exactly what we were hoping to do. we were actually the top point scorer as a team, which was not something i think many people would have bet on before the race. so, a very strong race, the car was amazing today, and that gives us a lot of confidence going into the next few races. onto cricket now, and england's men ended—up drawing their t20 series against australia after the to third and deciding match at old trafford was abandoned without a ball being bowled because of the
12:51 am
incessant rain in manchester. the two sides now play a quick five match one—day series starting at trent bridge on thursday. well, it's certainly a time of change for england's white ball side after some high—profile retirements — including the departure of moeen ali. they'll also have a new coach from january when brendon mccullum combines his job as test coach with the shorter formats. and the former england fast bowler steven finn has caught up with some of the new faces in the squad. the test side is something different. how they talk in the dressing room is all so positive. they're thinking, we've got very single player that got a chance to win this game, go out there and believe. who is the player that you wanted to emulate and looked up to the most? freddie flintoff for me.
12:52 am
is that why you are so good? i do absolutely nothing like how he played. i bowl spin and bat left—handed. the way he went about it and the way he was away from the game is exactly what inspired me to play the game of cricket. does it feel now a slight changing of the guard moment? it's definitely something, we spoke about potentially hopefully playing for england together. we are lucky to have them in our dressing room. they have been there and done it. it's been brilliant. just trying to learn from them as much as we possibly can. the way those two guys go about it, obviously the way they train and stuff, how woakes goes about it in terms of looking after his physical stuff, skills all that kind of stuff, and you chat to mo about anything, at some point in that conversation, in terms of some game
12:53 am
he played in, a situation... and when you chat with them and see how they go about it, you pick up a few things. great britain have failed to reach the davis cup final. they had to win all three of their matches in the tie against canada in manchester, but they fell at the first hurdle. dan evans unable to recover from his poor start against denis shapovalov, losing in straight sets. it means canada qualify for the finals in malaga in november, along with argentina from this group. and after the match, evans admitted this might be his last davis cup appearance. there's probably some better players than me at the minute, so i will have a think, and i don't think it's right to be put in... ..awkward positions because i've played x—amount of ties. if i don't feel i'm capable of playing, you know, iwon*t... yeah, i won't come back. denmark's rasmus hojgaard produced a brilliant finish to win the irish open, beating the home

favourite rory mcilroy. mcilroy looked on course to claim his first professional win in northern ireland, leading by two shots with four holes to play at royal county down. he had this chance to force a play—off on the 18th, but his eagle putt narrowly missed, meaning hojgaard took victory by a single stroke. the dane is the youngest player sincejose maria olazabal in 1989 to collect five wins on the european tour. i played well this week. you know, missing the green on 15 is the place you can't go. and just misjudged the speed with the first putt on 17. overall, yeah, obviously really disappointed that i didn't win, but, you know, i'll try to take the positives and move on next week to wentworth. you can read more about rory mcelroy*s defeat at the irish open and all the other sports

news stories on the bbc sport website and app, but from me and the team here, it's goodbye. hello there. well, we've seen plenty of sunshine throughout the weekend, also a few outbreaks of rain for some, but that is the last of the wet weather that we'll see for quite a few days yet, because for much of next week, it's looking dry and settled. high pressure dominant, more sunshine and it will feel warmer by day and milder by night too. just watch out for the possibility of some rather murky mornings, with mist and fog patches developing, especially where the winds stay light. now, here's that area of high pressure building in from the south—west. it's centred more or less right over the uk as we head through monday, deflecting these low pressure systems out towards the north and the west. now, as we head into monday morning itself, there'll
12:56 am
be some mist and fog, particularly for north—west england, south—west scotland, perhaps. it's milder towards the south with that legacy of cloud for a while. coolest out towards the north and the east, but a whole range of temperatures as we start off the day. now, the mist and the fog will readily lift and clear as we head through the morning, and there'll be plenty of sunshine around, lots of blue skies. high cloud turning the sunshine hazy at times. more of a breeze out towards the far south and the east. we could see one or two very isolated showers for kent, but it's still unlikely. more cloud for northern ireland later on through the day and temperatures in the high teens, the low 20s. 21 celsius for parts of central and eastern england — it's close to the seasonal average. and then on tuesday, well, we could see any mist and fog, really, across parts of yorkshire, lincolnshire, down through the east midlands, more of a north—easterly wind for east anglia, south—east england here and a bit more in the way of cloud for north—west scotland. but with a south—westerly wind blowing, then, for parts of the moray firth, the highlands, temperatures could reach 21 or 22 celsius, so certainly feeling warm here.
12:57 am
wednesday and thursday, our area of high pressure starts to meander further northwards and eastwards. it's still dry towards the north. towards the south, we'll see more of an easterly breeze take hold, but it is going to be feeling warm here. again, there's a more noticeable north—easterly blow. windy through the channel, perhaps, but 2a celsius in central—southern england and south—east england, and again 21 or 22 celsius for those sheltered areas of scotland. so here's the outlook for our capital cities, then, as we head through the week. there's a lot of sunshine around. it's dry and it's settled. we could potentially see a few showers break out on friday. bye— bye. voice-over: this is bbc news.
