benfica also scored early on in the first 15 minutes. they have added to it with this free kick. last night, celtic were the most impressive winners. but not far behind were borussia dortmund. last season's finalists started with a 3—0 win at club brugge, with two of their goals provided by the latest english player to break through at the club. jamie gittens was on the books at reading and then manchester city before following in the footsteps ofjadon sancho and jude bellingham to a club known for its ability to develop young talent, regardless of nationality. gittens is an england under 21 international and helped the under 19s win the euros a couple of years ago. his impact last night brought this response from stephen warnock on champions league match of the day... but it's in keeping with the start he's made to this season for dortmund, as bundesliga

commentator kevin hatchard told me. we have kind of seen, in flashes, what he can do. what has been really interesting as he has been put into this role of super sub this season. if you look at their very first bundesliga game of the season, at home to eintracht frankfurt, the game was drifting, it was 0—0, they were not playing particular well, he came on, and only 13 minutes after coming on, passing off the left, brilliant strike into the far corner post up and then went on to scree second goal and wrap up the game, and the game boy at club brugge was very similar. came on as a sub and within a few minutes i got the opening goal, admittedly with the aid of a deflection, and then follow that up with the second goal. so, insistently now, he is affecting games coming off the bench. the comparisons _ games coming off the bench. the comparisons come because of the expectations that have come before him, because you've gotjadon sancho, jude bellingham and now him following that same path, and there

with the league's opening match tomorrow night against aston villa. when you are chelsea, you just want to win every single title, you want to compete in every competition, and we know all the teams will be ready. it will be tough. but we feel ready, and the players are really competitive, i think i am also really competitive, so this is about it, and we like to be in that position, to be able to compete. meanwhile, chelsea defender niamh charles has had surgery after dislocating her shoulder in a preseason game against feyenoord. the england international left the pitch in tears during the win but has had a successful operation. they couldn't be split in the t20 series, mainly because they couldn't beat the manchester rain at the weekend, but now england and australia have started the one—day part of their month—long white ball battle — in some september sunshine, no less. nottingham provided the good weather and a good start for england. ben duckett struck 11 boundaries on his way to 95, but he was stopped in his tracks by marnus labuschagne — the first of three wickets for him. this put the brakes on a fast start for the hosts, who lost their last eight wickets

how much effort goes into an america's cup campaign, the strategy, the testing, building, designing test boats. extrapolating that data, then going away with designers, technicians, engineers, figuring out the design for the race boat, the race components, going away, manufacturing that, getting it on the water and getting it ready for racing, and this period of last couple of month where we have been on the water with the race boat, figure out how we can sailing and they can go faster, so it's a really complex project. it's a team of over 100 people working flat out for three and a half years to get to this point, so again, huge credit to everyone involved to have made it through this far through to the louis vuitton final, but our goal is to get through that and get all the way. to get through that and get all the wa . * * , . ~' to get through that and get all the wa . * . , ., ~ ., ., way. ben ainslie, talking to me from our slowness — way. ben ainslie, talking to me from our slowness today. _ way. ben ainslie, talking to me from our slowness today. -- _ way. ben ainslie, talking to me from our slowness today. -- from - our slowness today. —— from barcelona. the men's rugby union domestic season gets under way in england tomorrow with a repeat of last season's premiership final between bath and champions northampton, while saracens get

6:47 pm
they will get to know some of these young players who are ripping up trees in training, training the house down. so i think part of my role is to help them. to help them, you know, be what i think they could be. i think a lot of them are going to be great players. and i want... part of my role, as captain, as well as being a senior player, is to ease that transition, make that transition as seamless as possible for a lot of those guys in the same way the senior players, when i was 20, 21, helped me. england's squad for the wxv tournament that starts later this month has been named, but next year's world cup looms over the selection. there's no place for former captain poppy cleall, while there are two uncapped players among the 30 named today in bo westcombe evans and phoebe murray. jo currie's been speaking to a couple of the red roses, including flanker georgia brock, who only made her debut in the weekend win over world champions new zealand. real surreal experience, is the best

to. between now and then. but that is all for sportsday. goodbye for now. good evening. it has been another day when things have felt more like summer than september. most places got to see at least some sunshine. and along the south coast today, temperatures got pretty close to 25 degrees. but in the southern areas, things are set to change as this area of low pressure pushes northwards over the next few days. that will bring some showers, some thunderstorms, and see how the rain is set to accumulate in some locations. it is possible that some places in the south could get close to a month's worth of rain, but notice, further north, not much rain at all. it is going to stay largely dry across northern england, northern ireland and scotland. warm sunshine up towards the north west, often quite cloudy and cool close to these north sea coasts, and with the chance for those

showers and thunderstorms down towards the south. now, in the shorter term tonight, we are going to see a lot of cloud filtering in across many parts of the uk, and even where we keep hold of some clear skies — say, across parts of northern ireland — we could see a few fog patches. a little bit on the chilly side across north—west scotland, down into northern ireland. further south and east, though, with the cloud and the breeze, a mild start to friday morning, a lot of cloud around first thing — that tending to retreat towards the east coast but staying pretty murky, i think, for parts of north—east england and eastern scotland. and then we start to see these showers and thunderstorms breaking out across parts of wales, southern and south—western parts of england. we could see a lot of rain in a short space of time. and those temperatures, if anything, a little bit down on where they have been. during friday night, we continue to see this feed of cloud into parts of north—east england, eastern scotland, staying quite murky here. through saturday,

sunshine for western scotland and northern ireland, but further south across england and wales, i think we'll see more of these heavy downpours and thunderstorms — perhaps the worst of those from the midlands, westwards into wales and the south—west of england. temperatures north to south around 16 to 22 degrees into sunday. it looks like we'll see the showers joining into longer spells of rain. again, though, confined to southern parts of england, the midlands, wales. further north, largely dry. best of the sunshine to the north—west. quite murky for some of these eastern coasts. and then, as we head on into next week it does look very unsettled. low pressure is set to be in charge. we'll see some rain at times. it could potentially be quite windy and it is also set to turn quite a lot colder.
