election. it is this first presidential elections in sri lanka had to default on its international debt two years ago. we arejust international debt two years ago. we are just monitoring that, that electoral commission in colombo. we are getting reaction as well. anura kumara dissanayake has spoken out on twitter, on x. he has tweeted that this was notjust twitter, on x. he has tweeted that this was not just a twitter, on x. he has tweeted that this was notjust a win for him, he had a team behind them. we arejust for him, he had a team behind them. we are just monitoring that breaking news coming from sri lanka. let's go back to azhar main story today. the developing crisis in the middle east. we begin this hour in the the middle east, where the deputy leader of hezbollah says its confrontation with israel has entered a new phase — describing it as an "open—ended battle of reckoning". naim qassem was speaking during the funeral of a senior hezbollah commander, killed in friday's israeli airstrike on beirut. that attack has led to a further escalation of cross—border strikes, with two people reported
4:04 pm
to have been killed in an israeli attack on southern lebanon. and israel says hezbollah has fired over 150 rockets into its territory. residents in haifa, 30km from the lebanese border, have been told to restrict gatherings and stay near shelters. from jerusalem, paul adams reports. northern israel under attack this morning. houses hit far from the lebanese border. hezbollah are seeking revenge after days of devastating setbacks. israel's air defences in action over the northern city of haifa. hezbollah rockets now reaching deeper than ever into israel. evidence across the north that the iranian—backed group is using longer range weapons. haifa's main hospital has been preparing for this for weeks,

the injured brought to its converted underground car park. israel's relentless assault on hezbollah goes on. jets attacking targets across southern lebanon overnight. israel says it is hitting the militant group's infrastructure, especially its rocket launchers, trying to keep hezbollah on the back foot. translation: in the last fewj days we inflicted on hezbollah a sequence of blows that it did not imagine. if hezbollah has not understood the message, i promise you it will understand the message. where all of this is heading is not clear. there have been several other moments of high tension over the past 12 months. but israel's war on hezbollah has stepped up several gears in the past week. now the group is trying to prove it remains a formidable enemy. none of this bodes well for southern lebanon, caught in a battle between deadly enemies. it has already paid a heavy price and seems destined to suffer more.
4:06 pm
scenes like these from northern israel are likely to trigger further action. for now, the two sides locked in a dangerous spiral. paul adams, bbc news, jerusalem. as we heard in that report, people in northern israel continue to take shelter. for more details, i spoke earlier to our correspondent daniel de simone, who's in jerusalem. there was significant fire into israel from lebanon today. overnight and into this morning. there was also a smaller number of missiles fired into israel from iraq by an islamic, an iran—backed militia in iraq. in northern israel, schools have been closed until at least tomorrow night, hospitals have been told that they can only operate in secure areas and one hospital has been transferring patients to an underground car park. beaches have been closed
4:07 pm
and people have been told, in some areas, have been told they need to be near secure shelters at all time, so effectively being near bomb shelters. some of the missiles that came in overnight from hezbollah has been described by the israeli military as going further and deeper than seen before during this almost year long conflict with hezbollah, so that means farther south. and we have seen missiles around haifa in northern israel, we saw some houses damaged, some people have been injured and hezbollah said it was targeting an airbase and a defence company in the north of the area. but i think what this shows is that hezbollah, despite of all of the targeting of it this week, in ways it has become used to in the airstrikes and in the ways that never
4:08 pm
imagined to be targeted such as the pager and walkie—talkie explosions, despite all that, it is still capable of striking israel. earlier this week the israeli government set a war goal of returning home 60,000 people who have been displaced by the rocket fire over the past year in northern israel. at the moment, that has not clearly been achieved because hezbollah are still firing rockets in, people are still displaced and if anything, people are even more disrupted at the moment by what is happening. so i think that leaves the question about what will happen next, what further steps might israel take. the leadership certainly has said they will not stop these military actions until they achieve their goal. hezbollah, for its part, says it will not stop firing until there is a ceasefire in gaza and in the occupied west bank. so as we heard from daniel there israel continues to strike into southern lebanon. 0ur middle east corresponent hugo bachega is following developments from beirut. the israeli military say that these attacks are going to continue and they are going to intensify. so the fear here in lebanon is that we could see the beginning of a wider israeli offensive against hezbollah.
4:09 pm
and again as daniel was saying hezbollah is defiant, they say that these attacks are going to continue unless there is ceasefire in gaza, and all recent efforts for a deal in gaza have failed. that was the main hope to try to de—escalate actions here along the border. now, the last few days have been humiliating for hezbollah, the group have suffered a number of setbacks, those explosions targeting pagers and walkie—talkies used by the group, an indication that israel has infiltrated the group's communication system _ even though israel has rejected any involvement in this attack, but also the attack here on friday in beruit, that essentially decimated the command chain of hezbollah's main fighting unit, an air strike that hit a residential building here in beirut.
4:10 pm
i was talking to some hezbollah supporters and they remain defiant. they say these israeli attacks will not affect their positions, they will continue to resist. i think this shows you the feeling among some hezbollah supporters. but obviously across the country, the view here and the fear is that hezbollah is dragging lebanon into a conflict with israel that is not in the country's interest, a conflict that could be devastating for this country which has suffered so much over the years. that was focused on at the labour party conference this weekend. it's the labour conference in liverpool this weekend — earlier we heard from foreign secretary david lammy. addressing the recent escalation between hezbollah and israel, mr lammy said
4:11 pm
it was "worrying" and he told british nationals in lebanon to "leave now". in recent days... applause. ..we have seen a worrying escalation between israel and lebanese hezbollah. this is in nobody*s interests. 0ur message to all parties is clear — we need an immediate ceasefire from both sides so that we can get to a political settlement. so israelis and lebanese civilians can return to their homes and live in peace and security. applause. and to british nationals still in lebanon, let me be very clear. for your own safety, leave now. iran is not only destabilising the middle east but providing support to putin's barbaric war through exporting ballistic missiles. and that is why we put

new restrictions on iran air that will stop it entering the uk and new sanctions against the irgc. also addressing the labour party confrence, the uk deputy prime minister, angela rayner, says she doesn't believe she broke any rules when she stayed in the new york flat of a labour donor. ms rayner told the bbc donations were part of politics — and the government was "open and transparent" about the process. the prime minister and senior figures in the government have said they won't accept further donations for clothes, after fierce criticism. helen catt reports from the labour party conference in liverpool. the labour party conference is finally fully open for business. the big draw on this morning's agenda, the deputy prime minister angela rayner. it is an absolute great honour of my life to stand here today as your deputy prime minister. applause.

and, conference, i want to start off with my first thanks that are to the british people. you entrusted us with the task of change and we will not forget it. you kept faith with us and we will keep faith with you. after weeks of sombre messages from the government, she seemed to offer a bit of optimism. but conference, things can get better. if we make the right choices. sustained economic growth is the only way to improve the lives of working people. and we are fixing the foundations to put britain back on the path to growth. but a row over donations of clothing to miss rayner, keir starmer and rachel reeves that has dominated the run—up to this conference and attracted criticism. frankly, accepting free clothes

and luxury designer goods for his wife, frankly strikes me as a bit weird and to be honest inappropriate as well. and this morning, angela rayner had to defend another donation she had taken. a stay in a new york flat at the expense of the labour peer lord ali. she declared it but didn't say that a friend had stayed there, too. i don't believe i broke any rules. i had the use of the apartment and i disclosed that i had the use of the apartment. in fact, i think i was overly transparent because i think it was important, despite it being a personal holiday. briefing against sue gray, the downing street chief of staff has also leaked from inside government. angela rayner said ms gray was being demonised. and in an interview with the observer this morning, sir kier said that leaking just damages everybody. he added, it is myjob to do something about that and i accept that responsibility. helen catt, bbc news, liverpool. the crown prosecution service says it twice considered bringing charges

against the former harrods owner mohammed al fayed, but on both occasions, it concluded there was no realistic prospect of a conviction. all of this has come to light since a bbc documentary this week led to dozens of women coming forward with allegations of being sexually assaulted or raped by the billionaire, who died last year. let's get more from our biusiness correspondent, ben king. we have learned today that in 2008 the metropolitan police investigated the case of a 15—year—old girl who said she was sexually assaulted by mr al fayed in the boardroom of harrods. that case was passed to the crown prosecution service but they took no further action. they say that was because they had no realistic prospect of a conviction based on the evidence that they had at the time. there was a similar case which made it to the cps but no further in 2015, and three subsequent cases which did not make

it as far as the cps. now, contrast that with the 20 or more women who have been in touch with the bbc to detail their experiences of sexual assault while working at harrods. and we have also been contacted by dozens more who have detailed their experiences of assaults at the hands of mr al fayed. the deputy prime minister, angela rayner, was on the television this morning and she called his allegations horrifying as she said she was concerned about powerful people who seem to get away with it time and time again. harrods is now no longer owned by mr al fayed who died last year, but sold to the state of qatar. they say that the victims were failed and they will settle legal claims.

4:26 pm
around this morning, you'll know it's pretty wet out there. some places have had as much as 50mm of rain. this was earlier in the day, but i think we'll get some more showers developing in the brighter slots further south. so, if you're travelling across england and wales for the rest of the day, there'll be a lot of excess spray and standing water on the roads which will cause flooding. the details of the warnings are on the website because we now have an amberwarning. this is for tomorrow for monday's rain, but i think a large area of england and wales will be affected by that rain. up to 60 or 80mm could fall, and that's on top of what we've already seen through yesterday and today as well. so the rest of the day, as i say, there'll be quite a lot of rain around, showery rain with some heavy thunderstorms, torrential downpours, large hail and gusty winds. and temperatures, as a result of a bit more cloud in the sky, a little lower. further north, some good sunshine across western scotland, parts of northern ireland and the northwest of england, but near the east coast, again, we've got that misty low cloud which rolls back in overnight.
4:27 pm
now overnight tonight, as that low pressure that's driving all this heavy, thundery rain just moves a little closer, you can see that rain starting to become a more organised band of really intense rain. so again, a warm and muggy night. a little bit fresher in the glens of scotland, further north and west. but, obviously there'll be a lot of mist and murk around again tomorrow morning, even in the south. but tomorrow for england and wales, real concerns that we could see, as i mentioned earlier, a month's worth of rain, if not more, in a few spots on top of what's fallen last night and today could result in some flooding issues and certainly some disruptive weather around with that thunder and lightning and temperatures just taking a dip once again even further north to because we've got a weather front approaching from the north. so for monday, it looks like we'll see the wettest weather across england and wales. for tuesday, a little bit drier across england, wales, but some heavy rain coming in across this weather front into scotland. and then from midweek onwards we've got another area of low pressure rushing in off the atlantic, this time, notjust rain, there could be a sting in its tail, it could
