attack. this is coming from the white house official. a direct military attack from iran against israel would carry severe consequences for iran. also in the last couple of minutes, an israeli military spokesman has said we have not yet identified an aerial threat from iran and he goes on to say that at aerial defence systems are fully prepared. with just repeating what we are hearing from the white house, the united states has indications iran is preparing to imminently launch ballistic missile attack against israel. of course it all follows the start of israel plasma ground invasion of southern lebanon which happened overnight. let's get up to date. we will speak to our correspondent in washington in just a moment or two. joining me now are our correspondents jon donnison injerusalem, tom bateman in washington and anna foster in beirut.

released previously classified information on video saying israeli special forces have been carrying out regular raids almost daily into the border into southern lebanon. we have been destroying channels, infrastructure, they didn't meet any resistance. there was quite dramatic video of some of the channels and weapons they found. this was something he suggested had been going on as far back as november and that israel might have spent some 200 nights carrying out raids such as that. we have talked a lot over the last 18 hours or so about what's happened in terms of this latest invasion into southern lebanon but actually it seems like israel has been preparing for this the best part of the year. i has been preparing for this the best part of the year.— best part of the year. i will come back _ best part of the year. i will come back to _ best part of the year. i will come back to you - best part of the year. i will come back to you in - best part of the year. i will come back to you in a - best part of the year. i will. come back to you in a moment but i want to go to beirut. i

am reading the latest from the lebanese state media saying he has been an israeli strike quite close to a south beirut hospital. so those strikes are still going on as we are speaking. still going on as we are speaking-— still going on as we are speaking. still going on as we are s-ueakin. , . . ., speaking. they are. we heard aaain speaking. they are. we heard again that _ speaking. they are. we heard again that strike _ speaking. they are. we heard again that strike just - speaking. they are. we heard again that strike just in - speaking. they are. we heard again that strike just in the i again that strike just in the last half an hour or so from here. we know that israel were targeting hezbollah's senior command structure in the southern suburbs of beirut. we know of course there on friday they killed the leader of hezbollah. they say they have killed many of hezbollah's senior commanders so the command structure at the top of the organisation has been decimated. and yet we are seeing what israel calls precision air strikes in the southern suburbs of beirut. you can still possibly hear very loudly the sound of a drone in

the sky above the city. that is near constant now most times of the day or night. so it shows that even as israel is beginning that ground invasion in the south of lebanon, even as its troops have crossed the border and are starting to target some of that military infrastructure they say hezbollah has dug in and are there, they're still focusing on this capital city as well. in terms of the invasion, do we know how far the israeli forces have gone into lebanon and whether there is any direct fighting between hezbollah and idf forces? , fighting between hezbollah and idf forces?— idf forces? they were some re orts idf forces? they were some reports of — idf forces? they were some reports of direct _ idf forces? they were some reports of direct fighting - reports of direct fighting earlier today that was then dampened down by both sides. i think it's an interesting question at the heart of this because what is right have said is that they would carry out localised targeted limited ground attacks in that area in
3:06 pm
southern lebanon but actually the area they are trying to secure is a very large one. we know there is a whole hezbollah infrastructure, tunnels dug into the ground, along the border, and that will clearly be israel's priority. that is something they want to get rid of in order to secure the northern border of israel and those communities and the people have been evacuated. but also that why the buffer zone is very large, it goes all the way up to the lakhani river and thatis way up to the lakhani river and that is an area that was supposed to have been cleared of hezbollah fighters and cleared of weapons after the war in 2006 under un resolution 1701. that never really happened and even though there was a un peacekeeping force there that that is on was not relieved the buffer zone it was supposed to be. so some indications israel wants to try and clear that area of all hezbollah military infrastructure and fighters but that would be a much bigger

a final— in danger of being eradicated. a final question about that information we are hearing coming to us from white house officials about iran preparing to launch a ballistic missile attack against israel. it is the real danger here, notjust the real danger here, notjust the war in gaza, notjust the war in lebanon, a broader conflict in the whole of the region. do you accept that still now is a real risk as we are talking?— are talking? everything is iran. hamas, _ are talking? everything is iran. hamas, hezbollah,| are talking? everything is i iran. hamas, hezbollah, iraq, syria — iran. hamas, hezbollah, iraq, syria. they— iran. hamas, hezbollah, iraq, syria. they have built a whole army— syria. they have built a whole army of— syria. they have built a whole army of proxies and their aggression is affecting everybody, notjust israel. they — everybody, notjust israel. they are _ everybody, notjust israel. they are a danger to the whole globe — they are a danger to the whole globe. we understand that probably dealing with them is imminent. they are the head of the snake — imminent. they are the head of the snake and they need to be dealt — the snake and they need to be dealt with. it is a global

3:14 pm
other infrastructure in the south of lebanon and missile capacity and in that respect it's going to move and it has moved. you hear the warnings, the last speaker spoke to this, you hear the warnings don't get dragged too far in. however the dynamic is that the bar will be placed so high that they will go further in and this is likely to lead to more of a war of attrition, depending on what capacity hezbollah has. what we have already seen is the copy and paste and here we have to be very clear, civilians are constantly being hit, you have 40,000 almost entirely civilians, children, women, in gaza, you have the destruction of gaza and you are seeing that playing out in beirut and that is where the doctrine was first tried in 2006. it is named
3:15 pm
after the seven beirut neighbourhood. that doctrine is in itself an intention to commit war crimes by targeting civilian populations and destroying civilian infrastructure. so well beyond the scope of the ground incursion you are seeing the continuation of the displacement, 20% of the lebanese population already. i don't think this can end well for israel because what you don't have is a political vision on the part of the israeli side that is non—0—sum and other knowledges that you live in this region israel will have to stop blowing everything up have to stop blowing everything up and will have to stop running what is credibly being called by the international human rights and international criminaljustice system and criminal justice system and apartheid criminaljustice system and apartheid regime against palestinians.—
3:16 pm
apartheid regime against palestinians. our historic parallels _ palestinians. our historic parallels any _ palestinians. our historic parallels any particular . palestinians. our historic. parallels any particular use palestinians. our historic- parallels any particular use as we are talking now because this time hezbollah leadership has been decapitated, we've seen the arsenal's head, so many of theirfighters the arsenal's head, so many of their fighters targeted by the israeli authorities. to the parallels with 2006 and all the analysis that once the israelis crossed the border it can be long drawn—out and it can be very difficult task for them, do they stand with what we are seeing this time around? that's a really good — seeing this time around? that's a really good question. - seeing this time around? that's a really good question. that i seeing this time around? that's a really good question. that is i a really good question. that is precisely what we are now in the throes of finding out. the parallels that i think can be drawn is twofold. first of all, the targeting of civilian areas in lebanon. bloomberg is a fascinating graphic outward shows israeli strikes into lebanon are four times greater than strikes from lebanon into israel. so first of all what one can say with a degree of
3:17 pm
certainty as that crime are going to be committed against the lebanese as they have been against palestinians by disproportionately targeting. and secondly, i don't think anybody knows at this stage whereon the spectrum degraded and incapacitated hezbollah's capacity is like, that this is a history of what happens when a history of what happens when a country acts in a way that oppresses and denies the rights of people and this is primarily about palestinians but is real of course occupied southern lebanon for almost two decades. so what we can know is that when that happens and when avenues of political diplomatic sanctioning and legal redress are closed, then it doesn't justify anything but inevitably will have armed resistance and you will have blowback. israel

or half an hour. we had that report being quoted on the lebanese state media saying they had been a strike near to a south beirut hospital. we waited to hear more from our teams in terms of potential casualties there on the ground. it is worth looping around to where we started this half an hour because potentially a significant development coming out of senior white house officials. i will repeat the information they have been saying to cbs, our partners in america. the united states has indications iran is preparing to imminently launch a ballistic missile attack against israel and we are actively supporting defensive preparations to defend israel against this attack. a direct military attack from iran against israel will carry severe consequences for iran. i think we can show you the live pictures from israel because of

course they they will be making preparations, the israeli military saying we have not yet identified an aerial threat from iran that all of those preparations are currently in place. those are the pictures from tel aviv. more on all of those strands from the middle east coming up in a moment or two. don't go away. hello. flooding continues to cause concern across parts of england. here we've got a weather watcher picture from the manchester area showing some flooding from the river great ouse. and at the moment, here's the latest flooding situation. we do have a number of flood warnings in force. the numbers have come down significantly in the south west, but we have these new flood warnings in northern england to go along with the problems that we have across parts of the midlands. now, today, yes, there is a bit more rain to come and for the most part across eastern england it's quite a steady rain with just a few heavier bursts mixed in. so maybe another ten millimetres of rain to come,
3:26 pm
something like that as we go through the rest of the day, with the heaviest rain, probably going into east anglia and across the greater london area. at the same time where we have some flooding concerns into north west england, the weather should be mostly dry here, but staying pretty cloudy. the best of today's sunshine will be in northern ireland. now overnight, as skies clear in scotland, i expect some fog patches to develop here so it turns quite murky. england and wales still having a lot of cloud. still some patches of rain coming into east anglia in the southeast of england. but by this stage the rain is going to be a lot lighter and then we see high pressure start to build across the uk. so although there could be a bit more rain to come across east anglia, south east england, it's going to be very light, and so i'd expect the number of flood warnings to drop over the coming days, because many of us should have quite a run of 2 or 3 days of dry weather to look forward to, and that should help some of those flood waters start to ebb away. bit more sunshine, i think, for scotland and northern ireland as well, for tomorrow. and then into wednesday night, it's a cold night. temperatures down in single

figures and a touch of frost in the coldest parts of scotland. now thursday morning, starting off with a few mist and fog patches, scotland, northern ireland, northern england. clearing away. high pressure is in charge. plenty of dry weather. most of us will see some sunny spells and as i say, those flood waters should continue to have time to slowly ebb away. our temperatures around about 13 to 17 degrees. now, we should manage another dry day on friday for many areas before the weather starts to turn much more unsettled. low pressure in the atlantic will start to bring some windier weather conditions in time for the weekend, along with some heavy outbreaks of rain. it's notjust over the weekend. next week is looking unsettled, too. so i think the best description is we'll see rain at times next week.
