hello there, and welcome along to the programme. it really has been an evening of shocks to tell you about in the champions league, and there was no bigger surprise than in france where the holders real madrid were beaten by lille. it was jonathan david's goal that proved the difference, his first—half penalty giving lille a famous 1—0 win over the 15—time champions. real pushed for an equaliser late on, but couldn't find it. the loss ending a ill—match unbeaten streak for the spanish giants in the competition, stretching back to may last year. another of the standout results and performances on wednesday belonged to aston villa as they beat one of the favourites, bayern munich. it's been a long time for the home side to taste a european night like this, having won the competition back in 1982 after beating the same opposition. nestor mcgregor was at villa park for us. villa park may be quiet now, but during the 19 minutes, it was deafening.
4:46 am
a memorable night here, the venue hosting top—flight european football for the first time in over a0 years. there were fireworks before kick—off. the game itself in truth was a bit of a slow burner. martinez with a fine save in the first half probably the pick of the action. into the second half of the game came alive thanks to substitute john. 10 minutes left on the clock, an audacious effort from the 20—year—old colombian, the bayern munich keeper stranded, the bayern munich fans stunned. that wasn't the end of the action, though, because martinez was called into a few more point—blank world—class saves to definitely tie the points for aston villa. villa fans will be quick to tell you that one of their most famous victories was in 1982 in rotterdam where they beat bayern munich 1—0 to lift the european cup. no trophies on offer today, but this win will do a lot in their confidence going forward in the champions league.
4:47 am
nestor mcgregor there. let's get a check then on the other results from wednesday, and another surprise in benfica's 4—0 hammering of atletico madrid. two wins from two for them. liverpool also kept their perfect record with a 2—0 win over bologna. wins also from juventus, who came from behind. the europa conference league has had to wait until wednesday to get under way. the first two matches brought wins for rapid and victoria, while on thursday, it will be a famous day for both teams, two representing their countries* first appearance in the main draw of a european competition. for the welsh side, tns, a daunting game against the italian side, fiorentina, but one that marked a remarkable rise, asjohn watson reports. # the saints are coming... new territory for the new saints. from playing bala town to facing italian giants fiorentina.
4:48 am
massive gig. really looking forward to it. if we can get in their half, we're looking good. how do you feel about playing one of the biggest teams in europe? well, it's exciting, isn't it? yeah, it's great. we've seen more european football here now than i've| seen at everton, and i've been an everton fan since 1957. - it is a remarkable story for a club that's roots lie in the amateur leagues of welsh football. starting here in the village of llansantffraid in 1957, before rising through the divisions and joining with 0swestry town in 2003, becoming the new saints. delight for a club of their size who were watching the conference league draw closely. from a big club point of view, you know, it was chelsea who was there and fiorentina and i think we wanted it, one of them away from home was what we really wanted.
4:49 am
this is a team that's playing juventus, inter milan, how does it feel? is it slightly crazy that you're going up against them? yeah, we've got some unbelievable players there. the household names, the goalkeeper, we were expecting a tough test, but this is one we will enjoy. this is our 1000—litre hot—column hybrid still. here at this local distillery, they're bottling the team's success. so, what's harder — building a winning team or making a successful gin? definitely it's harder making a successful gin. is it? yes, because i make it. i'll put that to the manager. you put it to the manager and the chairman! yes! and have produced something special to mark this historic moment. we decided to create this particular product to recognise that achievement in a welsh league club, in the welsh league system, achieving this for the very first time ever. so, how many bottles of that
4:50 am
will be drunk if they beat fiorentina? i'll never say that. does it test good? it tastes perfect! i suppose we should toast to the next step to europe. good luck against fiorentina! very nice indeed. there we go. best of luck to them. now, onto tennis, and carlos alcaraz came from a set down to beat the world number one jannik sinner in a dramatic china open final in beijing, ending the italian*s 15—match winning streak. the match had to be decided on a tie—break with alcatraz winning seven stunning points in a row to claim victory, including that one there. it's the spaniards fourth title of the year and a 16th of his career. he has now won all three of his meetings with sinner this year, and afterwards admitted the match was too close for comfort. i didn't lose the hope, but i thought, ok, i have to give everything that i have just to try to give myself
4:51 am
the opportunity to be close. i played great points just to make the 3—3, and after that, ijust think to go for it. if i lose it, at least i went for it, so that's all i thought in that moment. these kind of matches can really go both ways. it was not my day. he played better in important moments and that's it. but i'm proud again of a great week and making finals here, last year i won here, so for sure is a place where i love to play and so i am already looking forward to next year. and the international cricket winter calendar is about to start with the women's t20 world cup getting under way on thursday. bangladesh were due to be the host until political unrest in the country led to the tournament being relocated to the uae. dubai will provide the venues and that is where henry is to look ahead to the tournament.
4:52 am
here in the uae with all of the dramatic buildings and the heat, we are ready for the women's t20 world cup of 2024. covering the tournament for the bbc, and tash, it's hot, it's pretty sticky and humid and we are going to a competition with australia, the reigning champions, and of course expected to do well again. i'm not sure why i'm wearing a jumper but it is hot out here. you cannot look past the champions australia as you said, they are so good, their batting depth which is unmatched in this tournament. it's hard to know where they play, they played the best teams in the english, some that we come off the back of, but really looking forward to seeing scotland. i do think they can cause some upsets in the world cup. scotland playing the opening game against bangladesh were due to be the tournament host before the competition was moved here. it's their first ever world cup. what can we expect? i'm really looking forward to seeing them, obviously
4:53 am
they have the sisters who will headline, they will have to do really well to scotland to get far into the tournament. but a lot of the girls playing in english domestic structures as well back in england, so the years of playing quality cricket, they came through the world cup qualifier and they have been out in the uae a lot in recent times so they will be acclimatised, they have three day games, in this heat, that will be tough. in the competition to get stronger and stronger that the women's game, the professionalism has grown a lot in recent times, but we do see a bit of a gap between those at the top, england, india, australia and some of those below. who could perhaps cause a bit of an upset? i'm looking forward to seeing sri lanka. they have had a unbelievable t20 world cup, won something like 171% of their matches and that is truly t20 world cup, won something ——like 171% of their matches and that is truly because they managed to play so many more games and they were before that last couple looking forward to seeing them and i think
4:54 am
they can go find tournament. we should wait and see, it is hot here and that is unsurprising. two venues here in dubai and also around about 20 kilometres north. it all gets under way on thursday building up to a final in october 20. andrey and tash there. the england squad for the men's white—ball series in the west indies has been named and there are three uncapped players among them. the spinner who came through the south asian cricket academy and joss butler turns from injury to lead the side for three one—day international games. you can get all the latest news from the usual places, the bbc sport app orfrom our website. from me and the rest of the team here on sportsday, thank you very much indeed for watching. we will see you again next time. take care.

hello there. with high pressure building in across the country, it looks like the next couple of days for most of us should stay dry with a good deal of sunshine around, but nights will be chilly with some mist and fog to greet us in the morning. so the next few days then, largely settled. some welcome dry and sunny weather for most of us. here it is, our area of high pressure pretty much dominating the scene right across the uk. we've lost those weather fronts across the southeast. could still just see the odd light shower towards east anglia and the southeast, but most places will be dry. lots of sunshine through the morning, a bit of fair weather cloud bubbling up into the afternoon. that could just herald the odd light shower. but most places will be dry and the winds a lot lighter too. a little bit fresher through the channel, across devon and cornwall. temperature—wise, doing pretty well. it will feel very pleasant in the sunshine — around 16 or 17 degrees in the south, mid—teens further north.
4:56 am
now, as we move into thursday night, with clear skies, light winds, it's going to turn quite chilly again, particularly across scotland and england and wales. but the breeze, the cloud, outbreaks of rain will start to push into the northwest of the country by the end of the night, so temperatures here recover into double figures. but again, further east, it'll be chilly with a touch of frost and some mist and fog to greet us first thing on friday. friday, we've still got our area of high pressure dominating the scene for most of us, but these weather fronts, low pressure starts to push into the north and the west. that'll bring stronger southerly winds, more cloud for northern ireland, for western scotland, where we'll see some showery bursts of rain. but southern and eastern scotland and the majority of england and wales will have another fine and dry day, a good deal of sunshine into the afternoon. and again, with light winds, temperatures reach highs around 17, maybe 18 degrees, mid—teens further north and west. now, some changes as we head into the weekend. it does look like this area of low pressure begins to encroach into the north and the west of the country, so it turns wetter and windier here. further east, though, it stays dry into the first part
4:57 am
of the weekend too. some of this rain will pep up across northern ireland, western scotland to become quite heavy into the afternoon. but eastern and southern scotland and the majority of england and wales again having another dry day on saturday, but some rain will get into west wales, southwest england later on with increasing breeze. top temperatures, again, 17 or 18 degrees, mid—teens further north. but the upcoming week does look more unsettled. it looks like this area of low pressure in the atlantic will win out. it'll bring showers or longer spells of rain, but it'll be on the mild side with milder nights to come too.
