cross the english channel. and a vaccination campaign against m pox is getting under way in the democratic republic of congo. a full bulletin of news in half an hour, but now it is time for sportsday. hello, and welcome to sportsday this saturday night with me, chetan pathak. coming up on the programme — joy for diogojota as liverpool hold on for victory at crystal palace, but at what cost to their goalkeeper? a winning start for england's women at the t20 world cup, as bangladesh are beaten in sharjah. and ben stokes agrees a new two—year contract, but the england captain won't be playing in the first test against pakistan which starts tomorrow.
7:32 pm
i've got some good things to focus on, so although i'm not playing, i have a goal in mind. welcome along. thank you forjoining us. not an easyjob taking overfrom jurgen klopp, but it's nine wins out of ten in all competitions now for liverpool's new head coach arne slot. victory at crystal palace wasn't as straightforward as it should have been, but their 1—0 win at selhurst park means they'll stay top of the premier league going into the international break, as nick parrot reports. full—time at selhurst park, and diogojota's face said it all. a lunchtime kick—off following a midweek european game has often been difficult for liverpool to
7:33 pm
digest, and this was no different. crystal palace have yet to win this season, but they struck after 21 seconds through eddie nketiah. had he not been offside, this match could have been very different. arne slot made three changes, and it soon paid off, with kostas tsimikas and cody gakpo setting upjota. it took until the end of the first half for the hosts to serve up any sort of response. their first shot on target was followed by several more after the interval. alisson was kept busy and crystal palace felt hard done by not to get a penalty after a challenge from liverpool captain virgil van dijk.
7:34 pm
alisson then had to be replaced following an injury. vitezslav jaros did very well last season when he was on loan, he wanted to play desperately, we need three good goalkeepers at this club, and he was outstanding today when he had to come in for alisson. liverpool have a tougher run of fixtures, including a trip to arsenal, following the international break. this might give a clearer indication whether they can challenge for the title. so one of the big talking points from that match was why palace weren't awarded a penalty. not long after the incident, the premier league match centre's x account gave their explanation. this is a new service this season. they said "the referee's call of no penalty for the challenge by van djik on guehi is checked and confirmed by var,
7:35 pm
deeming that the challenge was not sustained holding and had no impact on the play." that didn't go down well with the palace manager. this is for me a clear foul, the var had to intervene, but he didn't, and second half we did very well. first half, liverpool should why they are maybe the best team at the moment. they caused us big problems. but in the second half, we showed a great reaction, and i think we were competitive in the second half, we created chances but did not take them, we did not get this penalty, and in the end it is a loss, but on the second half performance, we will build up, and the second half today gives me a lot of confidence for the rest of the season. manchester city stay just a point behind liverpool after they came from behind to beat fulham to maintain their unbeaten start to the season. mateo kovacic scored both of city's goals. they now haven't lost in 50 consecutive home games in all competitions. jeremy doku added a third, but fulham, who took the lead
7:36 pm
through andreas pereira, scored a second goal late on. pep guardiola's side held on for victory. we played some good moments, in other moments they were better than us, and after the champions league, fulham is an incredible team, they have some very experienced and talented players. we knew it, but, yeah, we won. arsenal are also unbeaten, and like city also came from behind, to get a 3—1 win over southampton. kai havertz and gabriel martinelli with the goals at the emirates before bukayo saka added a third late on to seal victory. we concede a goal and then it is game on. everything we did in the first half thrown away, and it is a different game.
7:37 pm
but i think the team reacted with a lot of authority, very reassured, very composed, and i'm very happy that we can react like this, but not that happy, with the amount of control we had in the first half, that we have to go through that again. leicester city have their first premier league win of the season, beating bournemouth 1—0, facundo buonanotte*s first—half effort enough to take all three points at the king power. and eight goals at brentford, who took advantage of wolves* defensive problems to get their first premier league win since august, putting five past gary 0'neil*s side. wolves did respond with three goals of their own, but it wasn't enough — just the one point for them from their first seven games, whilst brentford climb into the top half with the win. and west ham got their first home premier league win of the season as they beat ipswich 4—1. the visitors are still waiting for their first win since their return to the top flight. you can watch all the goals this evening on match of the day at 10.30.
7:38 pm
in the late kick—off, everton and newcastle drew 0—0 at goodison park. the visitors had the chance to be 1—0 up, butjordan pickford saved anthony gordon's penaltyjust before the half—time whistle. kilmarnock pulled off the comeback of the day in the scottish premiership — 2—0 down to dundee with 86 minutes played, they ended up winning 3—2. dundee had a player sent off late in the first half, but were already in front and doubled their lead with ten minutes to go. only for kilmarnock to draw level, and matty kennedy's 9ath—minute strike completing victory. motherwell*s great start to the season continues — andy halliday*s late winner earning his side a 2—1 win at ten—man hibs. and dundee united extended their unbeaten away run to four matches with a hard—fought victory at st mirren. in the championship, head coach wayne rooney was sent off but his plymouth side still beat blackburn rovers 2—1 thanks to a 97th minute winner.
7:39 pm
earlier, norwich city were 4—0 winners over hull city, marcelino nunez put them ahead with this great strike. burnley had missed the chance to go top with a goalless draw against preston. sheffield united have climbed to second in the table thanks tojesurun rak—sakyi who scored twice on his 22nd birthday as they beat luton 2—0. as well as plymouth, both watford and sheffield wednesday grabbed late winners against middlesbrough and coventry respectively. plenty more reaction to all of those results on the bbc sport website. in the women's super league, nikita parris scored on her full women's super league debut for brighton as they came from behind to beat aston villa 4—2. brighton's second win in as many home league games puts them second in the wsl, level on points with chelsea and manchester united, who both play their matches tomorrow. villa are still without a win. next to a winning start for england at the women's t20 world cup. it was far from a convincing
7:40 pm
performance with the bat, but they still had enough to beat bangladesh by 21 runs in their opening match in sharjah asjoe lynskey reports. for bangladesh, this world cup could have been so different. two months ago, they were set to host it. amid political unrest, it has been moved to the united arab emirates. for england, location won't change expectation. their form in t20 should see them charge through this group stage. but bangladesh here were restrictive. england lost wickets and found runs hard to come by, while bangladesh let loose. they might have been even further on top, but drops in the field gave england a chance. they scored 118. it meant they would need wickets. in the field and in this match, england found ways to hold on. for bangladesh, a big score was just as hard to get to.
7:41 pm
this was the bowling england needed to defend that small total. their world cup is up and running. this was not quite the perfect start. but for england, all that matters is to be here at the end. meanwhile, australia began the defence of their t20 world cup title with a comfortable six—wicket win in sharjah. sri lanka batted first and set a target of 93, but despite losing three early wickets, opener beth mooney*s unbeaten 43 led the six—time champions over the line with 3a balls to spare. they will now face new zealand on monday. staying with cricket, england's men have named their team to face pakistan on monday. ben stokes will not be a part of the first test, so 0llie pope will captain the side. jack leach is recalled to the team along with shoaib bashir, so two spinners for england. zak crawley also back in. there will be a debut for brydon carse, who just over
7:42 pm
a month ago completed a three—month ban for historical gambling offences. he is chosen over matthew potts and 0lly stone. the england captain ben stokes has signed a new two—year england central contract, despite his injury worries, which will keep him in the side for the 2026 ashes trip to australia. stokes hasn't played since the beginning of august, and trained away from the rest of the squad before batting in the nets on saturday. he'll now try and get fit for the second test which is also in multan on the 15th october. it is always frustrating to miss out, but the three tests i watched in the summer when i was with the team but not playing, i enjoy watching cricket, but knowing that you can't be a part of a game makes it a little bit easier, but i have some good things to focus on, so although i am not playing, you know, i have got a goal in mind, so that will take the focus away from the disappointment of not playing. i have worked hard with the medical team
7:43 pm
to get to where i am now. i think i am further ahead than we expected, and i will be working just as hard over the next ten days to give myself a chance of being fit. joe root is also in the team, and he has the chance to break another record. he needsjust 71 runs to surpass sir alastair cook and become the man with the most test runs for england. but he says his focus isn't on the history books. yeah, i would like to get more than that in this game. so i kind of see it as a little bit irrelevant. i feel like i'm going to be playing for a good while past it, so it is not really a focus, i think more than anything it is about getting into the series and getting us off to a good start, trying to carry on the form that i have been in, really, keep making big hundreds, and

contribute to winning games. reigning champions wigan warriors are through to the superleague grand final after thrashing leigh leopards 38-0. wigan dominated the semifinal with sam walters scoring two of their three first half tries to send them in at the break with an 18—0 lead. more of the same followed and bevan french scored the try of the match, dancing his way through the transfixed leigh defence. wigan will face hull kr in the decider at at old trafford next saturday we managed the game well, kicks well. this win was good. after that, we had the chance to express ourselves. we were very good. to rugby union now, and scotland's hopes of retaining their wxv2 title were boosted by a hard—fought

win overjapan in cape town. the scots went into half—time leading byjust two points, but rhona lloyd's try put the match beyond japan, with the match finishing 19—13. they take on australia in their final game of the tournament in a week's time. that could have gone either way. japan were outstanding today, we have played them a huge number of times, by far that was the best performance they put in against us. for a small pack, the physicality they brought today was unbelievable. but testament to my team as well for sticking in and getting thejob done. that was scary, if i'm honest with you, but we got the job done, we got the win, and i'm super proud of the girls for sticking at it. in the other game in that group, south africa lost 33—26 to australia. later france face the usa, before ireland take on canada. stay across all those results on the bbc sport website. bristol bears have gone top of the premiership after beating bath by 36 points

seamlessly from jurgen klopp. can that form continue? especially when we look at their next 12 games. they have some tough games coming up. how do you see that fixture list playing out for liverpool? it is going to be the test, the transition has been excellent from a football perspective regarding the manager coming the manager coming in forjurgen klopp. in forjurgen klopp. i think he has also handled i think he has also handled the media very well, the media very well, i think when you get wins i think when you get wins so early, the players buy into so early, the players buy into what he is doing, what he is doing, so whether the changes arsenal coming up, chelsea so whether the changes that he has brought in are more that he has brought in are more personal, sitting one—on—one personal, sitting one—on—one with players rather with players rather than a group perspective, than a group perspective, and what he has done and what he has done there is, when you win, there is, when you win, they are buying into it. they are buying into it. and when you don't, the players and when you don't, the players think, we did not do that think, we did not do that before, so that is why before, so that is why we have lost. we have lost. but this is the top end of but this is the top end of the league, champions league, the league, champions league,
7:52 pm
real madrid, man city, real madrid, man city, arsenal coming up, chelsea who are resurging well, and we will find out what liverpool are truly about. how do they grind out results? we have seen pace and power for so many seasons, but they get down the side, they get good crosses in, end—to—end, a bit more build up... so what will we see? they will probably not have a successful run there as they have at the start of the season. why not?
7:53 pm
want to play liverpool, and i know there are certain clubs go to anfield and still have that mental block. arsenal, manchester city, that is one place in the calendar at this point in time, they are looking at and saying we could be in trouble, this is a tough one, the atmosphere, the aura, and if they are playing well, it is even worse. some of the methods that arne slot seems to have brought in, andy robertson was talking about breathing today... that's handy! thanks very much for that. breathing exercises. more regular ice baths. and also sleeping in their own homes before home games as opposed to a hotel. my mind was blown, why don't they do that anyway? the truth about ice baths is i used to do them every single day, i am scarred from them.
7:54 pm
i think they were very beneficial, we are seeing pe0ple _ beneficial, we are seeing people bring that into normal everyday life for health reasons. i don't think that is different, i get that as well about controlling your breathing, being able to control emotion at times, being able to relax in the moment. you would say that is important. but overnight being at home with your family, i think that is really important. the balance has got to be there, there has to be trust, and i think the professionalism of the players now will understand what they need. so if you have a small family, you think, i have been here this amount of time, i am off now, in work mode, off to bed, and you see your family the next day. is there a trust element to it as well? 100%, you have to have that. these players know that if they don't perform, they are gone. so for many seasons now, certain clubs have said you are going to be at home, other clubs have said we are going to be overnight in a hotel.
7:55 pm
i preferred being at home the night before... if it is an away game, you are there anyway. they are playing in europe, we have talked so much recently about the overload of players mentally, again it is another day away, the training ground, the recovery days, coming back from europe, that is a two—night trip, then they might stay the weekend if it is away from home. i think it is important to have family time, rest, recovery, days off, that it is so important, and i think the players will say, he has given us that, we will buy in, the trust builds, and it's right. but you have got to take your own pillow with you. they have their own beds within the training facilities, made up with a particular mattress or pillows for them, the infrastructure of these top clubs now, what they are doing is brilliant, how they are looked after, the level of the food, sports science, ice baths
7:56 pm
and many other devices, it is so important. but you have got to get the results. so palace's poor start to the season continues after that loss to liverpool. you can watch a football news show special on how they improve under 0liver glasner right now on the bbc iplayer. plenty more reaction to all of the football and to england's win over bangladesh in the t20 world cup. that's all from sportsday. from me and the rest of the sportsday team, bye for now. hello there. 0ctober so far has given some relief from the relentless rain of september, hope you have
7:57 pm
been able to enjoy it if you had the sunshine this saturday. look at this beautiful scene in barnsley. hardly a cloud in the sky. but as we move through the week ahead, change again. blustery showers and the potential for wet and windy weather in the south. rainfall accumulation shows we will all see rain, but the south and south—west england, we could see 70—80 millimetres over the next few days. low pressure will dominate the story again, we're already seeing signs of that with cloud and rain moving in and that will continue to drift north and east during the early hours of sunday. that is acting like a blanket, it will prevent temperatures from falling too far, so not as chilly a start as the mornings past, but it will be grey. central and eastern england are seeing the best of the drier weather.
7:58 pm
scattered showers, but out to the west, thicker cloud, outbreaks of rain throughout northern ireland, wales and south—west england and brighter colours denoting the intensity of rainfall for a time. temperatures peaking between 13 and 17 celsius, so in the drier brighter interludes, that is pleasant enough. through the evening, some showers could turn heavy as they move out of wales again into the midlands and into the north of england. they take their time to clear away, but there will be some clearance to the south—west. it is all about this low continuing to move its way steadily eastwards and then through the middle part of the week, another significant low pressure, this has the remnants of what was hurricane kirk in there. at the moment, it looks likely to stay to the south of the uk, but we'll need to keep firming up on the details as we get closer to wednesday.
7:59 pm
once that low moves through, the wind direction swings to more of a northerly and it starts to feel cooler as we head into the weekend. be prepared for showers or longer spells of rain over the next few days.
