an area solely populated by the leaders of hezbollah. there were also civilians who lived there, shia people who supported them, but we know they have —— been civilian deaths as well. they also say sometimes they are targeting hezbollah command centres but also where weapons have been stored. when we get a message from hezbollah saying one of their leaders has been killed, that confirms it. our middle east correspondent based in beirut went on a press briefing, and one of the things the hezbollah leaders were saying is that they were not storing weapons in that area. you kind of have
10:31 pm
a difficult information vacuum. on the hezbollah side, they don't let journalists on the hezbollah side, they don't letjournalists into those areas freely. you need permission to go in, you need permission to go in, you need permission to go in, you need permission to move around. it's not permission to go in, you need permission to move around. it's not somewhere permission to go in, you need permission to move around. it's not somewhere where permission to go in, you need permission to move around. it's not somewhere where you permission to go in, you need permission to move around. it's not somewhere where you can permission to go in, you need permission to move around. it's not somewhere where you can no not somewhere where you can go in and independently verify that there was nothing there. equally, when the idf say that it is a hezbollah command centre or weapon storage site, they don't always provide information to cooperate that, either. so you are left in a position where the two sides say two different things, sometimes you can triangulate that information, but sometimes not and you are reliant on what both sides say. i think putting all of that to one side, the impact on civilians here in beirut is huge. many of them are living on the streets here tonight. imagine seeing and hearing a powerful blast like that one, when you are on the street with your family, with your children, you haven't got shelter, you've got the clothes you grab it and talk with you,
10:32 pm
that has been going on for well over a week now in beirut. it gives you a small insight into what life is like for civilians here at the moment. just give us a sense _ here at the moment. just give us a sense of— here at the moment. just give us a sense of the _ here at the moment. just give l us a sense of the choreography, before these explosions happened, you hear drones from the israelis? were they flying over to get a sense of the area? you have been there a couple of weeks, just explain what happened is ahead of what you have seen tonight. 50. you have seen tonight. so, those drones _ you have seen tonight. so, those drones are _ you have seen tonight. srr, those drones are pretty constant in the sky now. you will hear them through the day, you will hear them at night. they are there almost all the time. they are israeli drones and they will doubtless be collecting intelligence that is informing israel about the areas that they want to try to strike. they say when they try to strike hezbollah targets. sometimes you get warnings and
10:33 pm
sometimes you don't. that is also important to note. there have been various strikes through the day, in daylight hours, where we have seen the impact of the strike, we have seen the smoke, we have seen the explosion of the damage, but there wasn't an idf warning that came out beforehand. those warnings tend to come in the evening. it has fallen into a bit of a pattern where when you get to about midnight here, i often see them on x, the idf arabic language spokesperson will put out a message on x, specifically highlighting certain areas with maps, certain areas with maps, certain buildings, they will say if you are in these areas, move away now, we are targeting hezbollah infrastructure and you are near it, so take this warning and move. there are questions about how many people here are actually following on social media what the idf have to say, whether or not those messages are actually getting
10:34 pm
through to people. at the idf are putting them out on social media channels, with maps. 20 or 30 minutes later, generally, you will get the air strikes, which you can hear throughout the city. they will echo off the city. they will echo off the tall buildings, you will see the plumes of smoke. there is a distinct choreography, sometimes with warnings and sometimes with warnings and sometimes not. the frequency of the strikes in beirut, talking specifically about beirut now, but don't forget there have been israeli air strikes on the south of the country as well, and in the valley to the east, which is why so many people there have left their homes. the idf have issued evacuation orders for a lot of towns and villages in the south. we were looking at 1.2 million people in total displaced, who fled their homes here in lebanon. they have been ordered to evacuate. that's about a fifth
10:35 pm
of the population. really there was no sign of how they could go back to their homes, and the lebanese state struggling to accommodate them. there were around 900 government shelters in the country, the un says they are awful at the moment. all of these things wrapped in really adds to the scale and the escalation of the crisis year. the escalation of the crisis ear. ,, , , the escalation of the crisis ear. , , , ,, the escalation of the crisis ear. ,, , ,, ., year. stay with us. if you are 'ust year. stay with us. if you are just joining _ year. stay with us. if you are just joining us. _ year. stay with us. if you are just joining us, i _ year. stay with us. if you are just joining us, i want - year. stay with us. if you are just joining us, i want to - year. stay with us. if you are just joining us, i want to tell| justjoining us, i want to tell you what has been going on, large explosions have again rocked the south of beirut at the end of another day of israeli strikes at lebanon. let me show you the recorded pictures where you can see one of the big blasts that were heard across the city. anna, explain again, you think may be a petrol station has been hit because the explosion was so big? because the explosion was so bi . 7 ,, ., because the explosion was so bi ? ,, ., , because the explosion was so bi ? , , because the explosion was so bi . 7 ,, ., , , . because the explosion was so bin? , , ., ,, big? so, this is what is being suggested — big? so, this is what is being suggested on _ big? so, this is what is being suggested on lebanese - big? so, this is what is being | suggested on lebanese social media, and in some of the lebanese media here, because
10:36 pm
what they are doing is looking at the area, the area the evacuation order was for, looking at the map some sort of pulling those things together. they think it may well have hit or ignited off you know, it could be one of two things. it would seem unlikely that the idf would specifically target a petrol station, because obviously you can see the size of the blast that would cause. there's every chance perhaps that a building or an area nearby was targeted, and that has verily ignited the petrol station. what we don't know for sure is what the exact target was, we don't know for sure it was, we don't know for sure it was a petrol station. when you look at the pictures, as you are showing and describing, is is a different sort of blast to the ones we have seen. if you look at the huge bunker buster
10:37 pm
bomb that targeted the headquarters and killed hassan nasrallah, the leader of hezbollah, that was notable for the power and be shock it sent out, for the sound, for the repeated blasts, and also for the columns of black smoke that rose up into the sky. but what we are seeing is the orange cloud, huge orange ball of flame that also rolls up into the sky as well. that is why people are speculating it is something a little bit different, and it is possibly a petrol station in the area that might have been hit.- petrol station in the area that might have been hit. thank you very much- _ might have been hit. thank you very much- i — might have been hit. thank you very much. i wonder— might have been hit. thank you very much. i wonder if- might have been hit. thank you very much. i wonder if we - might have been hit. thank youj very much. i wonder if we could go back to the live pictures. i can see them on my monitor. there have been more little blasts there in the centre of that suburb of beirut, where you can see the orange glow that and i was mentioning some you can see that they are still
10:38 pm
secondary blasts, even if it has been a petrol station as i know suggesting, it could be other things have caught alight because of that. you can see in the centre of your picture air that orange glow under the smoke pouring out from that area after these large explosions have again rocked the south of beirut at the end of another day of strikes. lebanon described a blast is very violent on so that ambulances rushed to the affected site. clouds of smoke, as we have been hearing, billowed over the southern suburbs as the drones that anna was mentioning are also buzzing overhead. we heard that the idf had called on the residents to evacuate the area, it is a hezbollah stronghold. but as anna was saying, it is not known what was struck. there
10:39 pm
were the reports that it could have been a petrol station. as i say, these are the live pictures. we can still see about orange glow in the centre of your screen, and what looks like it could be fresh strikes there. it is difficult to know whether this is something that has been caused by that original strikes, and this is the aftermath, if there has been a fire and it is catching other things, been a fire and it is catching otherthings, or been a fire and it is catching other things, or whether the israelis are striking again. it's difficult to tell from these pictures because it is so dark. the israeli prime minister earlier, benjamin netanyahu, he said the days of strike by his military had, what he described as, changed the course of the war against hezbollah. israel is claiming it has killed 440 hezbollah
10:40 pm
fighters since the start of its ground invasion. as anna was mentioning, this comes as the head of the un refugee agency said israeli strikes had left hundreds of thousands of people destitute or displaced. as i say, these are the live pictures coming into us from the lebanese capital beirut, where it is 12.40 in the morning. throughout the last couple of hours, large explosions have been seen and heard there. our middle east correspondent reporting 6—10 blasts. it does come following a day or further israeli strikes of the city today. i should also say that hezbollah has also fired dozens of rockets into northern israel, the israeli saying at least 90 rockets were fired into northern israel. as we have
10:41 pm
been saying, strikes all of this southern suburb of beirut follow a pattern that has happened since the conflict has escalated. first of all you get the warning from the idf, a post that they are going to target specific buildings and warned residents in that area to evacuate at least 500 metres from it. and they did that again tonight, about an hour later. you then get the strikes around 11 o'clock or midnight in beirut. that is what we have seen again tonight, and what is looking like continuing at the moment. as i say, it is difficult to know if this is more of a petrol station exploding, like and i was suggesting, or whether this is a fresh attack that has
10:42 pm
targeted another area of this suburb. certainly, massive explosions being seen in beirut tonight. again, it would tie in as to why we've seen such a huge yellow fireball and that smoke, if it was a petrol station that was hit. but these are new and fresh. it is hard because it is so dark, to know whether this is fresh attacks by the israelis or whether this is just the aftermath of the first few attacks. certainly louder blasts and you can see those explosions, the fire and then that smoke rising over this southern suburb of the lebanese capital beirut, which is a hezbollah stronghold, and
10:43 pm
the israeli military have been targeting on a regular basis since the conflict as escalated. that is what we have seen tonight. the blasts and the smoke billowing over the southern suburbs. as anna was saying, the constant drone buzzing overhead, the israeli drones. earlier, lebanese media reported two strokes had targeted locations close to the airport, with three more hitting other locations in the suburbs. we were talking about how this area is very close to the international airport in beirut, although for the last few days a number of countries have been evacuating their citizens via that airport. certainly there have been at least three evacuation flights by the uk authorities, they have chartered airlines to get
10:44 pm
british citizens out. earlier, we saw the early and is also flying some of their citizens, there are thousands of australians who have been in lebanon and they have been flown to cyprus, the nearest european union country to lebanon. a lot of countries are flying their citizens there. we know that japan has sent a warship... sorry, a military helicopter, a military plane, to greece, if it needs to evacuate its citizens. germany has sent military aircraft to evacuate citizens on monday, including a lot of consular staff, who they were getting out of the area. certainly the uk authorities have for weeks now been saying that british citizens should get out because the number of airlines that are flying out of the international airport in beirut have dwindled over the last couple of weeks,
10:45 pm
since this conflict has escalated. there is the lebanese airline that is flying, and then these charter flights that the uk and other countries have been putting on to get citizens out of beirut, because of what you are seeing on your screen. the fact that there have been more attacks by there have been more attacks by the israeli authorities and military on this southern suburb of beirut, which they say is a hezbollah stronghold, which they have been targeting killer facilities and interest, —— targeting particular facilities and interests, is how they describe it. we did have the warning from the idf that they posted to local residents, saying these are the buildings we are going to target, and you need to move at least 500 metres from them. but
10:46 pm
these are the live pictures we are seeing from beirut. it is 12.45 in the morning there, and you can still see the glow. another big target on your screen, you can see that flash. it does look like that could be fresh strikes by the idf, because it is slightly away from the fire you can see glowing in the centre of your screen. we did have the big explosion earlier on which my colleague, anna foster, was saying a lot of report on social media in lebanon were suggesting that they have managed to look at a map and see that it may well have hit a petrol station, which would explain why it was such a huge explosion. i should say that we do still have our live page up and running on the bbc news website, you can see the latest
10:47 pm
if you want to watch the video of the massive explosion that has been in beirut, that we have been mentioning, and our correspondence who we were talking to earlier saying that they had heard six big, loud explosions. but we have also had those pictures live in the last couple of moments. we will keep an eye on beirut. you can get the very latest from the bbc news website and app. donald trump is about to host a rally in butler, pennsylvania — at the same venue where an attempt was made on his life injuly. his return to the butler farm show grounds comes weeks after a second assassination attempt in florida. among those joining the republican presidential nominee will be x owner and staunch supporter elon musk, and the wife of corey comperatore — a retired volunteer

workers. both of those states are considered swing state in the upcoming us election. they could play a pivotal role in who wins the white house. a swing state is one of those states that either of the candidates could win. a lot of states in america will vote democrat or republican because they always do. then you will have a key seven also states where the vote could change. what is happening is that the two candidates are targeting those states, known as swing states, because they need to win to eventually get enough of the electoral college votes, which means that they can win the white house. this is the scene live in butler, in

want to take you back to beirut, this is the capital of lebanon, and show you the live pictures there... sorry, this is the recorded pictures rather than the live pictures. this is an explosion that has happened in the last couple of hours, large explosions rocking the south of beirut at the end of another day of israeli strikes on lebanon. our correspondence anna foster, who is in beirut, thinks that may be a petrol station was hit, which is why that explosion is so large. lebanese media describing the blast as very violent, and saying ambulances rushed to affect areas. as you can see, clouds of smoke billowed over the southern suburbs as drones buzzed overhead. the idf earlier called on residents to evacuate the area. stay with us
