event. today, we mark a year since the horrific attack on israel by the terrorists of hamas. it was the bloodiest day for the jewish people since the holocaust. a day of sorrow, a day of grief. over a thousand people were massacred, hundreds taken hostage in an attack borne of hatred, targeted notjust at individuals, but atjewish communities, at their way of life and at the state of israel. the symbol ofjewish security to the world. mr speaker, 15 british citizens were brutally slain that day. another has since died in captivity. our thoughts today are with thejewish people around the world, thejewish community here in the united kingdom and all those that we lost a year ago. for so many, the pain and horror of that day is as acute today

fronts in this evolving war that the houthis in yemen, also hamas in gaza, have fired some rockets today into southern israel and also going up towards tel aviv. meanwhile, in the north of israel, where we're, we're told that more than 140 rockets have been fired today from southern lebanon. and it's hezbollah who've been firing those, some of them going much further than we've seen in the past couple of weeks or so. for example, for the first time in nearly 20 years, israel's third city, haifa, was struck by two missiles. five were fired in all towards the city. two of them got through. also in tiberias, not not far from here, just next to the sea of galilee, five of 15 rockets fired by hezbollah actually landed. and so some people saying today that, you know, they have got concerns that the missiles, the rockets being sent are able to evade the iron dome, which we know is a very sophisticated and extensive system, but it's certainly not infallible.

of course, we wait. the world waits to see how israel is going to respond to those iranian attacks of last tuesday, because talk of a cabinet meeting with israel's prime minister, we could be pretty close to a moment like that. yeah, i think you're absolutely right. the focus so far has been on the commemorations, remembering what happened a year ago today, whether that's the military or the prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, or notably, families of hostages holding their own events because of the friction and the anger, frankly, they felt towards the prime minister over the past year or so, thinking that he hasn't prioritised trying to get back to back their loved ones. so you're absolutely right. i think the focus will move from these 0ctober the seventh memorial events. there are some happening later today, but yes, israel says it will strike back at iran.
