catastrophic storm as hurricane milton barrels towards florida. evacuation orders have been issued for parts of the state's west coast. the mayor of tampa has warned residents to leave now — telling them "if you choose to stay, you will die," he said. these satellite pictures showjust how enormous milton has become over the past 2a hours. the storm is expected to make landfall on wednesday night or early thursday morning. people living in madeira beach were boarding up their homes and businesses, in preparation for what's is currently a category 4 hurricane. dr meghan martin is a resident of st petersburg, florida — which is directly in the storm's path. we sustained quite a bit of damage from hurricane helene, even though it was around 130 miles away from us. we still took about four feet of storm surge into our house. so we've had to get everything out of our house. we've torn the walls out, we've moved out into a temporary house. and unfortunately, now we're looking at milton

coming basically directly over our house and so we're having to get the family evacuated, and i'm going to be activated at the hospital again. so it's been a busy couple of weeks. so a second evacuation for you and your family. first your home, now from the temporary accommodation. but because you have to be on call, does that mean that you and your family are going to be split up for the moment? for the first activation, my husband took my kids and we had a place to go. this time my kids are actually going to be coming with me to the hospital. my husband and my cats are going to be going somewhere else just because of the way that the storm is. and because of our current situation. there's not a great safe place for my husband to be with the kids. so the kids are going to come with me. he'll be somewhere else. so we do kind of split up the family. unfortunately, again, in this situation. when i read some comments from the mayor of tampa earlier, i was thinking, you know, i've never heard this expressed so starkly as on this occasion. the mayor was saying, if people don't follow

evacuation orders, they will die. i mean, that is really scary stuff. how worried are people with the second hurricane coming hot on the heels of helene? i think this storm is a category five. you know, we're predicting up to 15ft of storm surge, which is extremely life threatening. i mean, that's, you know, water in your attic, not just at your ankles. this storm will have life threatening, very, very damaging, parts of it. people really need to be heeding the warnings and getting out to stay safe. is everyone able to get out, though? we've heard about people having problems being able to fuel up their cars. we've heard, you know, that some people have been looking to get out by plane, but that prices for plane tickets are prohibitively expensive. so, you know, if you can't afford potentially or can't get access to fuel for your car, you know, what are you going to do? you know, ithink there's a reason a lot of gas stations are low
2:55 pm
on gas because a lot of people are already evacuating, which is awesome. but yeah, their gas stations are mostly out of gas now, so trying to get out of town would be difficult. we do have some local shelters that are open that are safer places than being at home. uber is offering free rides there with milton relief as the promo code. so there are still some options to get out safely. but a lot of people lost their cars during helene and just don't have a way to physically get there, so we do need to be taking it seriously. but there are some challenges. now look back at the pictures coming into from beirut. smoker continuing to rise from the skyline. the mayor of beirut telling the bbc that there is no safe place left in the city and he says intense israeli bombing means potential israeli targets have now spread out around the city. we have more coming up after the weather. hello there.
